TBF, Araj's rancid blood not result of her experiments, at least not completely. Her blood is that way thanks to her family's obsession with illithids, and their experiments in mixing their blood with them. House Oblodra is infamous for banging mind flayers, and possibly even breeding with them. So basically Araj is part illithid herself, which what makes her blood reck this much & be so thick and black. So when Astarion says that Araj's blood recks, he is basically smells the rancid from her mind flayer infected genes.

At the Beginning of the Drizzt Dro'urden saga, House Oblodra was one of the Ruling 10 houses in Menzoberanzan. They thought they could overthrow House Baenre, then the first house. Instead they failed miserably. As "Justice", the Combined might of the Sorcere (The Mage Academy), Arch-Tinilith (The Clerical Academy) and Melee-Magthere (The Fighter Academy) was bought to bear on them and they were Obliterated. Thus House Dro'urden started their ascension.
Araj is one of the lesser branches of said house.
This is inaccurate. House Oblodra was the only house with psionic powers, which didn't vanish at first like other sources of magic during the time of troubles. They were poised to destroy the higher houses of the city with little effort. They simply waited too long to act and house Baenre got an assist from their goddess via a demon. The different assembled factions were more there as witness as the matron mother summoned a giant untold monster from the abyss to wipe out the entire house complex.
That soy boy Drizzt's house had already been destroyed at that point. Only his sister had survived as a ward of Baenre, but he killed her. Then spent the start of next chapter justifying it and huffing his own farts about how much better he was than everyone else. So basically it was an odd numbered chapter.
