Video game leaks let us know what’s gonna happen before it happens. But sometimes, leaks can be wrong. Leaks can be VERY wrong.
Plans change, nothing is set in stone in gaming, and while that often feels like a cover story for when legit information seeps into the public that wasn’t intended for the public, there are times where this really is the case.
Take what may be one of the largest leaks in gaming history, at least for a console manufacturer.
The Xbox 720 leak.
While today we see similar leaks for the next gen Xbox, this was a bit more concrete.
A lot of information about hardware that nobody knew anything about.
And while the final product showed some of the features the 720 promised, and in many ways exceeded the product shown in the leak, it’s clear that Microsoft at one point had a much more ambitious plan for it’s eighth generation game console.
So let’s look back at which of these leaks actually happened, and which were changed, and why they may have been changed. - Hry

The XBOX 720 was so hype in my 7-year old mind. It's funny that its very dumb name is unironically better than the current XBOX naming system we have now.
it sounds dumb but it instantly gets across the idea of "The 360, but twice as good" which is a lot better than "this is one xbox."
Maybe the 10th gen Xbox will be called the Xbox now

I truly believe that Xbox 720 would have been a better name than Xbox One. It's much more distinct and memorable, and you would never be able to mistake it for any other version of the xbox. Plus most gamers were already calling it that, so brand recognition was high.
The next gen afterwards would have been the Xbox 1080, which also would have worked.
But Xbox one is 1080.

Microsoft was probably worried that its customers would have a hard time adding 720+720 and eventually 1440+1440
When the number gets to big, they could release the Y box, then eventually the Zbox.
No, no, you misunderstand, they would have just kept adding 360 to the number, so it would be 720, then 1080, and then 1440. Still beyond the scope of most gamers to add, but sleeker.

When you said “their plan was for people to stream games from the cloud” I literally choked on my drink. This concept was thought up in fucking 2010-11…. In 2024 my internet can’t even consistently stream Xcloud without constant artefacts and high latency, imagine what the average DSL connection from 10-12 years ago would be like streaming Xbox One games
It wasn't a new idea, the idea of "Cloud Gaming" was thought up and patented in the late 2000s, and a service called "OnLive" was launched in 2010 and ran until 2015, Google essentially bought the patents and relaunched their own idea called "Stadia" from 2019 to 2023, it also failed because...nobody was using it, and the input lag was horrendous, there is another service called Shadow PC, but rather than being specifically for Games, it's a fully functional windows 11 PC that you remote into...it works fine and has minimal and barely noticeable input lag, it's just really fucking expensive at $49.99 a month, you're better off getting a Gaming PC on payments and just paying the $50 a month to Klarna or Affirm
I just wanna to say that I plugged in the ol' 360 around October/November of last year, and saw that they were still selling modern movies on the store pages. One ad in particular was for Black Adam.
This is because they don't build a special version of the store for each console. They have one store on the backend that they all connect to. As long as the APIs for that store do not change every console will continue to be able to pull in new content.

I do remember the Xbox 720 being in this one book I remember reading in 2011 called The Lemonade Crime. I don't remember much about the book but the one thing that stood out was how one of the characters invited the main character to his house so they could play on his Xbox 720 (If I remember right this kids dad was supposed to the son of some Microsoft higher up so therefore he had a Xbox 720 prototype somehow) I also believe that this Xbox 720 was like some kind of Kinect or something because they played the game without a controller

You know, I am well glad that the WiiU failed as it helped pave a market to higher console specs! The Ps5 did go a bit high, but it was helped when scalpers lost money and governments stepped in to stop tissues from being resold at high prices as it made many items ,including electronics, more available to the public which pushed the market for even higher specs. Higher specs meant that consoles are now competing against desktop computers again! Who knew that the domino effect would help technology so much!
The name xbox 360 itself is taken because the xbox execs "don't want a number lower than PS3". In hindsight the reasoning was absolutely stupid but it worked wonders. And then Xbox One happened, abbreviated as the Xbone and then xbox one x abreviated as XOX. I guess worse reason but good name is better than whatever the xbone name was

This just makes me sad because I'm all for Microaoft's original plan. However, the failure of Windows Phone (the best smartphone ever) ruined both Xbox's and Window's trajectory
They even had efforts for porting some games on both of/Xbox/phones. That was a grandiose initiative that obviously didn't take off. But for a while when it worked while they pumped money into it, for 2-3 years, if was really special time (I owned a few Nokia and then Microsoft phones)
During that time Microsoft's problem was rarely the actual device. The consumer side of Microsoft was hitting it out of the park, and often may have been a little bit ahead of their time. The problems were with behind the scenes aspects (i.e. development tools were half-baked at best, with little buy in from internal Microsoft teams, leading to little buy in from 3rd parties) and poor marketing (couldn't make the brand seem cool). If they had put more effort into the development side of things, and distanced their products from the Microsoft/Windows brands they might have seen more success.
It was a smartphone OS, not a smartphone. And it was awesome.

NGL a lot of these features would have been so cool for the XBOX One if they brought it to market.
The 360E was actually quite good and I'd say relevant! It was by all accounts the best machine to play 360 games on. A last version of a soon to be last gen giving you the definitive experience for all the games you currently own. Remember that Xbox One didn't launch with backwards compatibility. For anyone interested in the console market but wanting to hold off on buying the Xbox One until there were more games, the more affordable and ready to use 360E was right there. I wish more end-of-generation consoles existed.

Wow 720 looks like a good game from 1986. I would've just called it Xbox 2 instead of Xbox One, but 720 is good also. Then call the next Xbox the Xbox 2 if the other one was called Xbox 720.

There was no reason it shouldn't have been called the Xbox 720. Yeah, obviously they'd have to change it up afterwards because saying "1080" and up is becoming a mouthful, but they could've easily gotten away with Xbox 720.
