Well Steve, in our country a very average handle starts at about $26, if you're lucky and a serviceable axe starts at around $60. The economics of spending any longer than 25 minutes fitting a new one don't add up. Very sad to be throwing old heads in the scrap metal bin.
You have the equipment. You just need a piece of wood. It would have taken you less time to cut and carve a new handle out of a scrap of wood.@@philgray1023

Never before seen such a catalog of errors - I honestly thought the video was a piss take - but it seems he was serious ....
A piece of inner tube and hot melt glue seems pretty underwhelming when it comes to holding an axe head on.
No new wooden wedge for the top, crazy glue and sawdust which did not fill the cracks all the way, a piece of inner tube as a filler, and hot melt glue (known for it’s temporary properties) and no wooden wedge. This is a ridiculous fix for a high impact tool. I just hope you don’t injure or kill someone when, not if, the head flies off.

It's ok for light duty, not heavy splitting or felling. Beautiful cleanup job, lovely head. Toss the handle!
To permanently fix a loose handle simply submerse the head of the tool in antifreeze. Antifreeze swells the wood handle and will never evaporate.

No, no, no. Do not do if you do not want axe head flying off. The timber of the axe handle has lost its integrity. Buy a new handle and wedges, they are very cheap. Fix axe head onto handle small end first and then hammer in the wedges to fully expand the handle into the wide end of the axe head. Glues will not survive the impact vibrations of an axe in use.

@@testdriver3146 No, not at all. It is knowing the difference between something that is repairable and something that is beyond that. This repair may be useful if you are the only one using it and KNOW NOT to do heavy forceful work with it, but if someone else found it and decided to chop a tree down with it or did anything else that would put heavy force and strain onto the handle . . . they might be lucky and the axe head stays stuck in the tree and the handle just comes off and stays in your hand. Anyone who has ever done any heavy intensive axe work knows where I'm coming from - those things go through hell and need regular maintenance. But I suspect you're not really serious.

Here's a counter-intuitive "secret" that most don't know: The proper way to insert an ax handle into an ax is to suspend the ax (with handle partially inserted) upside down and tap on the BOTTOM of the handle. Doing so "drives" the wooden handle into the heavy (high inertia) ax head. Do NOT place the ax on a surface -- hold it suspended in the air. NOBODY would assume that would be a useful way to do it, but old timers know it's the only practical way, and it works amazingly well. Try it sometime, lol. (I'll never forget my own awe when an old-timer showed me that trick -- because it's so counter-intuitive).
The best insight I have as a carpenter.
Always tap on the steal.
(Physically, this is the principle of inertia. The same principle can be observed when shoveling sand with a scoop)

@@kzimm59 It is a truism that sometimes older "wisdom" can become lost, and people can "forget a fact" which was once widely known and understood. I say this with confidence because I also watch physics videos on youtube, and one happened to professionally discuss this actual phenomenon. And indeed, the claim is that THIS actually involves the principle of inertia: trying to force something "light" into something "heavy" works well, simple BECAUSE the light thing moves more easily into the heavy thing. I can only suggest to you that you try it yourself. Get an ACTUAL wooden handle and an actual steel ax head, and try it both ways. You will easily see that hitting the base of the handle makes for easy insertion into the head while doing it the other way feels VERY inefficient. It seems like magic, but anyone who tries it can see it EASILY. You will be amazed and surprised.
@@GetMeThere1 A nice discussion, but (nearly) useless. If the wooden part is crafted well, it doesn´t matter which side you slapp to get the handle inside the axe´s head, Somehow you will get it, fix it with a wedge and that´s it.
Take a look at the first seconds here: The handle is badly harmed by working with the axe. This leads to dissapear the wood piece by piece. I am a very good wood-cutter and if I want to, I meet the target with the axe. But you know, not every time - and if the axes cut meets behind the edge of the wood, the handle may touch the wood. THIS is the main cause to break your handle piece by piece. I lost some handles this way too, this is just the way it goes during time. But you can help it and fix the problem:
Get a strap of stainless iron-sheet and wrap it arround the top of your handle just below the axe´s head and fix it with some screws. Soften the edges of the metal for safety action. you can believe me: This will protect your handle for years and the only thing to do with this axe is to cut wood and sharpen it. But the handle is in place unharmed for a very long time. (sorry for my not perfect writing). I saw this by meeting a friend (with his axe) and since I did like he, I never changed an axe´s handle again.

I’ve talked to thousands of carpenters and they all say they don’t mind anyone knowing this. One said he was bothered at first but then said “oh, I guess it won’t hurt if they know”.

before grinding the blade, You could hammer it like a blacksmith (cold forming and hardening the steel) and then grind the final sharpness to the blade. Additionally, give the blade a finishing polish on a stone!

the proper method is to put the axe head on the proper way around narrow eye 1st and then use wedges in the wide end to lock it assuming its a tapered axe head ?
Me Carpenter 50years, i would have replaced the handle, that in my opinion is really unprofessional.
Neet, and clever, not a heavy-duty axe so it should do. One problem is that on a hot day in the sun, the hotmelt glue softens considerably.
I was taught to drive a wedge diagonally. The stress is distributed to the vertical and side walls. Now the ax can be hung on the carpet above the bed as a decoration. Cleaned up nicely!

@@user-lv1so1rk5i Only diagonally, только по диагонали. Тогда распирать древесину топорища будет во всех направлениях. А еще, клин пропиливается ножовкой на 2/3 посередине и края, каждой пропиленной половины, затачиваются в разные стороны. Тогда, при забивании клина, края расходятся винтом в древесине, что затрудняет его выпадение.

Sorry, that's only a dangerous and short-lived fix - neither the innertube liner nor the hot glue offer a strong and secure hanging. With that massive crack in the handle it's only good for firewood and needs to be replaced.

First time in my entire long life that I seen so much modern equipment and expensive materials to fix a handle that is beyond repair, let alone that a new one might cost a fraction of all the stuff this dude put in there.
Oh, I almost forgot the safety considerations when gluing an ax handle, but you guys know what I'm talking about.
I guess this is a nice activity for someone with extra inventory and a lot of time in his hands.

hmm..... the hot glue is supposed to hold that? I'd like to see that axe after 6 months. Quite elaborate, lots of expensive glue, and no guarantee it'll hold. You could just fit a new handle.

This is not any sort of a proper way to fix a axe, you really need to just buy a new handle or make one. This fix would not last very long. And the glue would not last the vibration or impact of cutting wood.

Nice work. But i couldn't help noticing the axe head was remounted upside down. Easy mistake. I've done it myself a couple of times.
8 hrs x $20/hr = $160 + materials + fancy tools + dress shirt and gold watch + ceramic tiled shop floor + my 5 minutes to watch and comment = priceless! Nice axe tho!!
Use epoxy resin in the crack and use it with filler for the broken areas. Make a wedge of hardwood, secure with stainsteel screws. Use inner tube at the end to pretect the handle

You have patched up the cracks as if it was a dent on a car panel. This fix requires FORMIDABLE structural strength which your repair has not provided. You have hidden the structural flaws of the handles with a cosmetic cover up. Now you have a seriously defective axe which should be on a mantelpiece NOT used in the field. Thanks for posting

I am glad to see to see #jacobdewizard has highlighted the same issue The reason a Carpenter doesn't want you to know this as it highly dangerous and the axe head could fly off as the wood integrity has gone. The carpenters would use a fresh piece of timber and look for a harder wood for the handle. The highly hilarious part of this is you have a great workshop and tools to do a proper job and craft a create a superior handle so why don't you know show how to do it properly! 😂
Lots of work to make injury or kill someone near it in use. Dozens of ideas over the years may work for the casual user but don't chop like using it to cut down a tree.

Glue, unlike wood, will shatter with time. Make a new handle. Or risk flying ax heads. Not fun.

You must have the patience of Job my friend. I love my Fiskars x27 splitting axe as I don't have to do what you just performed any more. I still use my old axes occasionally but the handle was always the "Achilles Heel" no matter whether it was old growth Hickory, Ash, Spotted Gum etc, etc. My old competition Gilpin and Plum still have hickory handles. Scorch the handle with a torch. I'd consider cold bluing the head to prevent rust. I've used Elmer's glue and sawdust to fill wood voids but not Crazy Glue. Great idea. Excellent job on that

That is not a splitting axe. That head is for cutting. A splitting axe is wedged shaped and somewhat blunt. A cutting axe is sharp. So use it for what it is meant to be used for to see how well it works.
Bonjour à tous ,moi,je préconise simplement l emmanchement à l envers,ma hache de charpente est comme ça ,faut juste surveiller qu il reste un peu de longueur de bois ,le manche doit être parfaitement adapté à la lumière de tête de l outil .ça marche pour d autres outils...pioche ovale ,merlin,marteau de charpente ,coffreur...bon,j ai un peu de bouteille...68 balais...faites gaffe,choisissez bien le manche ,...le bois...si vous le faites vous même ...le fil du bois doit être bien droit,serré,et solide!bon courage!bye!

A new wooden handle made of hickory wood is only 5 to 8€. Nobody in Germany repairs the old handle, because time is money.
Good ideas to mount the axe. But it is mounted up side down. The axe is mounted wrong. For that ist is very stable.

This is more a restorer's approach to an old axe rather than a sensible one for a poor man who needs a kindling axe. Judging by the kit on display in this video the author could easily and sensibly afford a new handle.

*Demasiado esmeril o rebarbadora, NO hace falta pulir el metal ni quitarle el barniz pintura anterior(contamina con polvos)va a estar en contacto con la leña húmeda y el agua y se volverá a oxidar. Mucho gasto de electricidad.

Ha sido útil lo de fundir la silicona aunque dicen que no permanecerá.
*Mi consejo es usar un taladro, abrir un Huecco en el lateral del metal y poner un o 2 tornillo bien apretado.
