Old German "Helko Werk" Axe Restoration with Laminated Palm Swell Handle

- In this video I restored a German axe from "Helko Werk". I already restored an axe a year ago and I wasn't going to make another video about restoring another axe but the incredible work of a friend inspired me to create a handle for this axe very, very special.
So I started the restoration by disassembling the old handle. after inspecting the ax's head I decided to sandblasting it and electrolysis to remove any traces of rust. Restoration continued by repairing the hammered poll, made a new bevel and after that I applied a layer of bluing solution, for anti rusting. After cold bluing process, I removed from blackening with a steel wool and the head axe was completely restored.
The old handle was too damaged to be restored. I took a piece of Black Locust wood and I cutting it until I reached the desired shapes. As I said, I was inspired to make a custom handle and that's only because you voted on CZcams community to make a custom handle. So, I took a piece of Oak wood and I laminated the palm swell. The results of this axe restoration impressed me and I hope you have the same opinion.
Let's not talk anymore and let the video amaze you.
I hope you like this restoration and if you have questions about part of the restoration process, I am at your disposal with answers to any questions.
Cheers and have a nice weekend !

Very well done. I appreciate the camera quality and audio. At no point was there obnoxious music or exceedingly loud feedback from the tools. I really like the fact you didn't use any excessive material. Everything seemed to be calculated to use the perfect amount of consumables while maintaining a clean shop. I didnt realize how much I enjoyed that until I noticed it. Most importantly, you didn't artificially corrode something and try to pass it off as "ancient". I like your delivery and style.
Glad to read this kind words 😍 many thanks

I love how you kept the integrity of the old tool.... not glamming it up with etches or designs. A true restoration. Excellent!
Thank you very much Kathy 😊
Watching Cool Again is always a perfect way to start the day :-)
Glad to hear that my friend 🤗 cheers and have a nice weekend 👍🏼🍻
Watching LADB is a perfect way to start the day also! :D
True 🤩

That's a great slogan😁
No music = 👍 No commentary = 👍 No extraneous noises = 👍 Sounds of the (hand) tools = 👍 Nice work! 👍
Glad to hear that Kris 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Don't forget that smack that he made lol
exactly the way it had to be,, often videos got music ruining it all
@@jeghedderhenrik Music in these types of videos and unnecessary narration are not cool, IMHO, so I avoid them and watch only those without.

THAT was one of the finest examples of hand filing I have EVER seen (and I'm a 58 year old man who's done a lot of it). Your ability to turn inanimate objects into works of art is amazing! This was an absolute pleasure to watch, bravo to you brother! Thank you very much for sharing your videos with us. God bless you and your family. Rev. D.
Thanks a lot for your kind words 😎 I really appreciate you
@@CoolAgainRestoration Likewise my friend. :)
least encouraging and wholesome conversation between two restoration enthusiasts
А что такое "преподобный"?
It’s not just your workmanship I am jealous of, it’s the amount of equipment you have at your disposal too! Another great video 👍🏻
Thank you very much Simon 😇 really appreciate
Axes are my favorite weapon; I just like the aesthitic. I really liked the addition of the oak pieces on the end of the handle to give it a bit of color on the handle. Overall a great restoration.
Thanks and glad you liked it Ricky 🤗
I've said it before and I'll say it again. These are the BEST restoration videos on youtube. Everything is perfect. From timestamping the videos to putting explanations of what you're doing, filming enough to be interesting but not too much so it's boring. Your videos are relaxing, organized, easy to follow and have everything I want in a restoration video. Other channels, although good, just don't do it as well as this one.
Thanks for these kind words Emma 🙏 I really appreciate
This.
I've watched hundreds of these axe restorations on CZcams and this might be the best yet. Thanks 👍
Oh,glad to hear that Christopher 😊many thanks
@@CoolAgainRestoration Thanks for the hours of entertainment. All the best ✌️
Christopher Malloy this IS the best are restoration. I've watched hundreds of them and between Cool Again and Tysy they are true MASTERS at their craft.
axe* Spell check took over.
Glad to hear that 🤗🤗

I'm an amateur blacksmith, and this gave me ideas for my handle construction. Beautifully restored
Thanks a lot buddy 👍🏻 good luck with your projects
That’s the way an axe needs to be restored. Thank you👍
Thanks Mike and glad you liked it so much 👍
Great job friend 👍.
Thanks buddy
I can't get over how beautiful the handle turned out. All in all, A very impressive and respectful restoration of a piece of history.
Thanks and glad you liked it Alorota 😊
Mate I need to say that I just discovered your channel by chance.. (thank God for the incredible Zippo video).
Since everyone is talking about the handle and some other aspects.. I will take a minute to tell you how incredible is for me that you can remove material and polish the metal to such a degree that it literally shines like a mirror. For me, that was the best part..anyway, your work is outstanding, please NEVER STOP making videos like this ❤️
Thank you very much mate 😊I really appreciate
Beautiful restoration with honoring the original material.
Glad you liked it Ole 🤗
This is like my mechanic without powertools and i mean that in the most positive way. This video was great!
Thank you very much and glad you liked it so much 😊
I like a lot the laminated palm swell. Never seen anywhere else ❤️❤️❤️
Awesome technique for shaping the blade with the file! I never knew it could be done that way but it seems so simple now that I think about it.
Glad you liked and that’s why I make the video easy to understand 😇
The result is perfect, buddy! Thanks
Thanks my friend 🍻
Hey finally found the time to watch it. Such a nice project. Very well done and the video was so calming. Thank you for that!
Thanks man 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🍻
That handle looks amazing! That was a great idea laminating the palm swell, you nailed it. Also I really liked the towel trick for putting a bevel on the axe, I liked the whole video, awesome restoration.
Thank you very much Randy and glad you liked so much 🤗🤗 much appreciate

Nice this is just the thing to watch after feeling sick during the night a nice restoration

"I dont have a template, so i copy one" mate ur just pure talent and hardwork. Keep it up. This is absolute therapy for me.
Thanks and glad you liked it 😊
Gotta say, I have never seen the towel folding trick to re-establish the edge. Such a simple technique, yet such a proper outcome!
Thanks 😊
I've said this before and I'll say it again and again..Bluing is one of my favorite parts of restoration videos. Truly magical!
Yes,i agree with you! Is something satisfying in that process 🤩
This is the best axe restoration video I've ever seen. Thanks for keeping it real, no mirror-polish, Viking runes, charred handle nonsense.
Your result it authentic yet gorgeous axe.
Thank you very much Pavel 🤗 glad you liked it

watching things get restored is very relaxing.
Yes,I like too 😎
Another, yes another awesome restoration. If I lived anywhere close to you I’d be the friend that hung out in your workshop and wouldn’t leave…but I’d bring beer. Love watching you work…if you ever come over here, I demand you visit me. Awesome restoration…awesome!!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you very much for these kind words my friend . I really appreciate you 🤗 have a nice weekend
@@CoolAgainRestoration I appreciate you sharing your workshop with us! I have a question…is Odies a local product or do they sell it everywhere? I want to try it. And what brand draw knife is that? I can’t find a new one that’s any good. I have two that I use and they are both eighty+ years old.
Mine is old too. Has no company marks on,maybe is handmade,I don’t know. And the odie oil is very good, maybe the number one in business. But is too expensive. They ship everywhere but is expensive the shipping too. If you are from USA maybe is a way cheaper but to me was expensive because I paid the price for oil,the shipping from USA to Europe and the tax too
I don't understand how you can do it better and better from one video to another? So beautiful 👌 Can't wait to see your next project💯
Thanks mate 👍🏻
What a cool technique with hand filing the bevel, never seen it
Thanks and glad you liked it 😊
This turned out so nice
Many thanks 😊
Отличная работа, приятно посмотреть.
Such excellent work on the handle, it looked incredible. Great restoration as always 👍
Thank you very much and glad you liked it 🤗🤗

My fingers started tingling at the sensation of a splinter- that scene PAINED my very soul
Very nice work! The handle is great!
Thanks a lot 😊
Using a wood chisel to remove a steel wedge???? If my father had caught me doing that to one of his wood chisels, I wouldnt have been able to sit down for a week.
he didn't remove it... he made some space for it to come out... he hit the wood not the wedge itself
This was an incredible restoration, it flows so nicely and what a beautiful outcome!
Many thanks buddy

That towel trick was amazing. So simple and effective. Great job.
Yes,is very easy to do and can’t go wrong with 👍🏻🤗
I have a Helko Werk Forestry axe and also a small hatchet. They make amazing products. A lot of people swear by the Swedish made axes, which are very good. But as you pointed out they’ve been making axes since 1844. Thank you for restoring this piece. It is stunning.
Thank you very much Greg 😊
I hope you like the video and... axe me a question :)

Finally some restorator who doesn't do mirror polishing every metal he found!
Dark, matte rough finish almost always gives a better apperance to axes
