OH-6 Cayuse Mod First Look | Easy on the Eyes, Hard on the Controls!

  • The OH-6A Cayuse mod has been in public development for quite a while now, and while I was very excited for it, I had no idea how hard it would be to fly. Full disclosure, I'm a terrible helicopter pilot anyway, but this thing was more of a handful than any helicopter I've ever flown in DCS! The learning curve is definitely pretty steep here, but the mod is implemented very well overall.
    OH-6A Mod: github.com/tobi-be/DCS-OH-6A
    System Specs: Ryzen 7 5800X, RTX 3060 12GB, 32GB RAM, SSD
    Flight Controls: VKB Gladiator NXT, Logitech Throttle Quadrant

    Turns out my axis binds were messed up and that what was giving me a hard time. It's still more difficult to fly than other helicopters, but it's usable now.

      the mods makers put a lot of work into this, you may want to reshoot that flight part of the video so not to miss represent their work

      I agree, had a go the other night. Yes, definitely more suited to some setups than others (i.e. stick extensions for fine control) but not impossible. Nothing wrong with a challenging FM, so the title is fine I think, but the last half of the video probably shouldn't have been uploaded, it's quite misleading and might be interpreted as "this mod is super undercooked and buggy" or something.

    It looks like you have cyclic bound to more than one axis. You can see the inputs fighting.

    My Commander let me fly the simulator one day at work. He was amazed at how good I was at flying the bird he was stunned when I told him I learned from simulators. It definitely is Different in a multi-million-dollar sim 😂

      I was able to do the same in a Sea Hawk sim at NAS Jax when I was in cub scots... Which in that think you don't need to use the pedals to fly straight in a Sea hawk ounlike the Apache in DCS... Which really trew me off at first...

    Try it again. The 1.1 update made a HUGE difference. After initially trying it I refused to fly it any more as, much like the early UH-60 mod, it was teaching me un-helicopter like responses. But then 1.1 came out a week later and substantially fixed it. (And the UH-60 mod has improved a LOT since it first came out too and I no longer refuse to fly it either.)

      real blackhawk pilots fly that mod and they say its almost 1-1. apperently the mod feels slightly more sluggish then the real thing. but something only an experienced BH pilot would notice

    • @AdmiralQuality
      @AdmiralQuality Před měsícem

      @@BarkerVancity I was surprised and impressed. (I usually hate the free mods for their substandard flight models.) Even its slip ball worked right, where most mods' don't. (I assume because a function they need to easily do it isn't available without the developer SDK.)
      This one's not half bad either. I hope it continues to improve.

      Try the UH-60L mod if you want an easier time, it's also free and can load more firepower with the armament mod installed.

    Two points -
    1. If you have rockets on both sides, you can set the thingy to one. If you have rockets on one side (with the mini gun on the other) that’s when you need to set it to two.
    2. The chopper feels crazy when slow or taking off. I assume this might be related to those of us with smaller (as in normal desktop length) joysticks acting as the cyclic. Once you get moving forward over about 80 knots, bring up the helper and match what you have done with the cyclic diamond with the trim diamond. When you hit the sweet spot it’s like riding a horse going from canter to gallop, that sense or chaos just melts away. Everything smooths right out and you feel like you’re flying the thing, rather than struggling not to die. You can actually fly hands off for a few seconds as it smooths right out. It becomes a much better weapons platform too. Just don’t try to be too fancy in turning around to come back for another run. It’s easy to get into the ‘spaz’ mode again if you try anything showy.
    A long slowing and descending approach to landing seems to be the key to making it home alive as well.
    At least, that’s what I found. YMMV.

    • @Not-today-wb9do
      @Not-today-wb9do Před měsícem

      your not flying it your riding in it, you should an can just put the chopper where ever you need it when ever you need to no need for long slow approaches or slow lazy turns or trim for that matter just fly the thing as it is you wont learn how otherwise an any event slightly surprising will cause you to kill yourself because you don't know how to fly it

    I do know this mod is hard to fly, but I was also thinking your controls indicator looks like one or both of your joystick axis are bound to more than one device. Particularly with the parts of the video where the flight stick y axis seems to suddenly appear full foward causing your helicopter to do likewise.

  • @hueyfoo
    @hueyfoo Před měsícem

    I could manage to take off and do some rocket run. One big problem. I cannot land her back in one piece. One question...How do you shoot the minigun? I switched to gun mode, pulled trigger, darn! Nothing happened.

    • @SpinosSimulations
      @SpinosSimulations  Před 29 dny

      Turn master arm on and set the gun fire mode knob to "normal fire" (all the way to the right), and you should be able to fire it.

  • @ajgunn3277
    @ajgunn3277 Před měsícem

    see that clipping happening on your cyclic? It means you have VR controls or something else taking over.
    So the inputs that you're putting in with ur stick are being aggressively challenged by a 0-place axis (likely 2, pitch and yaw) while ur trying to fly.
    CLEAR ALL CONTROLS on AXIS CONTROLS then try remapping again.
    Here's to hoping the heli flies better like that :P

    • @SpinosSimulations
      @SpinosSimulations  Před měsícem

      Turns out that's exactly what was happening. I went in and corrected that and now it flies much better. Out of all the helis I have flown in DCS, it's definitely still the hardest to control, but it's not impossible.

    I think the steering is broken, look at the flickering of your virtual joysticks. Something is fighting your inputs. Mine is the same.

  • @tacticalbacon9877
    @tacticalbacon9877 Před měsícem +1

    Navigate to Settings > Controls > OH-6 > Axis Controls. Then clear the binds for all the devices that are shown. The sim will automatically bind things and most the time its wrong. 9/10 you will want to set all of the controls manually. I know its a pain fiddling in that menu but its a neccesarry evil unfortunately

    Is there even ground effect in the flight model?

    • @shagrat47
      @shagrat47 Před měsícem +1

      Yes, but the damage model isn't very detailed, yet. Also he had more than one axis bound to the cyclic x-axis so the inputs where "jumping" between actual stick position and "full forward" like crazy... so I recommend to try it out and not rely on videos. 😂

    • @tomaszwota1465
      @tomaszwota1465 Před měsícem

      @@shagrat47 Tested it today, yeah, the ground effect is there but it's barely noticeable. You can settle into hover with very slow descend speed at a few feet, but it's not felt nearly as strongly as in, say, the Huey. (Not that it should be the same or anything, the helicopter is much smaller)
      Very twitchy, but not impossible to fly. It would be ok if it didn't get into some bizarre wild oscillations at times (my bindings are clean ;) ). Good attempt, but I'll let them cook some more on that FM.

    it looks like you have a conflicting device set up for your collective and/or your cyclic.

  • @zbyskie
    @zbyskie Před měsícem

    Just like in the huey you need to set yourself properly before taking off. Go VERY light on the collective, you don't want to go straight up in the air but first go light on the skids and trim yourself out. Stick little back and little left and plenty of left rudder.

    • @shagrat47
      @shagrat47 Před měsícem +1

      FFB is a problem, as the OH-6A has no ForceTrim (the real life as well as the Mod). You can use the trim hat, but that shifts the center and simply adds your stick input on top. So basically currently you fly the Loach with the trim hat, using fine stick inputs for stabilizing, as it is assumed, you have a centering spring... you either remove the force completely and fly deadstick with the cyclic, or set the Force emulating a centering spring and trim away the pressure, until the stick is in neutral center, again. 😕 Or you have a RhinoFFB and can do a hardware force trim and override the sim.
