- Uniden SDS200 Review. In this video I am doing a Uniden SDS200 unboxing and review. I go through some of the menu options, scanner capabilities and close up look at the scanner itself. The SDS200 scanner is one of the most advanced scanners on the market today. There are also a few Uniden SDS200 how to operate tips in this video as well. Check below for purchasing recommendations. I love the SDS200 and how great all of its features are. The SDS200 is a great P25 scanner. If you need a scanner for P25 Phase 2, this one is great! It is also great at VHF high reception especially airband reception. In my opinion the SDS200 is one of the best scanners of 2019. I recommend this Uniden scanner to anyone looking for a P25, DMR, NXDN or ProVoice scanner. If you want to know how to program and use the Uniden SDS200, check out my review of the Uniden SDS100 where I go step by step with instructions.

can you hook up a outdoor antenna to this unit? Will it pick shortwave stations and broadcast?
You can connect an outdoor antenna but it cannot receive shortwave.
@@joebroz9619 I wonder how good the shortwave is anyway> Because from what I read there is no SSB on it. From what I know just reading little it only supports AM, FM, FMW, and on Shortwave the only choice is AM or SSB (Single Side Band). In less it has a BFO (Beat Frequency Oscillator) the it will now do SSB.
I found this scanner on a website for 99, do you think it’s a scam?
Sounds too good to be true
Make a video after having the SDS200 for a year now. See the results after one year of usage!!
Hi Thank You for your review of the SDS200 I currently have the SDS 100 and the 996P2. I am going to add the SDS200 to my scanner inventory. I have been in the scanner hobby for 52 years. Started Bearcat 3 with crystals 8 channels. Scanners have come a long way which is the understatement of the year. I am from Boston Mass. Thank for your review Sir much appreciated.
I know I'm late but this is a wonderful review. Very well put together and it convinced me to go with the SDS200 as my scanner.
Awesome Video! I love my SDS200, as well as my 2 536HP's! Keep on rockin Uniden
Awesome
Thanks for the Solid Review of the SDS200. I Got my SDS100 in October of 2023, Now I'm Buying the SDS200 Tomorrow**** Great Scanners **** Scan On*****
Awesome review. I just bought one of these and I’m so excited to get it. Thanks for your time.
Nice review, very thorough as usual.
If only this could decode an encrypted tetra transmission, id'e order one right now!
Gotta say, was not expecting to see someone who's woodworking videos I watch pop up on a scanner review channel lol. Surprising.
Great review! I am leaning toward this. I am in a area where I am encountering simulation distortion. My digital scanner is unable to pick up local police and fire. This is one of two scanners that is functional for my area. I am amaterer/novice. This looks straight forward to me.
Very excellent review! best I have seen.
Thank you
Excellent review! Really appreciate your work. I bought one!
Matt great video. I was just researching this scanner and found the video. I follow you on the 731 channel and other socials. It's cool to see your into this as well. I got my first scanner when I was a kid and which ultimately landed me into law enforcement. I appreciate your content, I would love to see new videos on this channel, however I know you're busy on the woodworking side.
Great Review.Thanks for posting
It's great to see a return of the "big box" base scanner. I still keep my UBC-9000XLT around because it's a breeze to use and easy to work with when monitoring analog frequencies (mainly airband).
I agree. I love the larger size of this radio.
Matt, that's a nice oak base you made. Stained or natural should be a nice addition to the rig. Been a furniture-maker [now retired] for almost 40 years. My first scanner was not a scanner at all. Made by KUHN Electronics; the model was 357C. It was one of the first tuneable scanners. Went through the Newark riots [1967] with that one. This was a very thorough review, well done. My 996t is getting a bit long in the tooth here in SoCal. Transmission modes are changing so quickly. Going to sit this one out and see how the SDS-200 shakes out. Thanks again for this great review!
Thank you. I didn’t make that stand, it was a gift. But I am also a woodworker. I have a woodworking channel just search “731 Woodworks” and you will see my woodworking channel.
Fantastic review!!!
Thank you for information! Very helpful.
Thank you
This is a great video I learned so much thanks 😊
I have the Sds 100 and I love it. I might also get the SDs for my house
awesome man love the new scanner
Awesome. Thank you
Amazing review. Greetz from GER.
Nice waiting on my sds100 to show up your in Tex
I just bought a set of SDS' (100 and 200), fully loaded with the DMR/ProVoice/NXDN options and they were both over $1000 each. That's a damn sight more money than a scanner should cost, but I'm in the monitoring market for those emission types so you've got to pay to play.
AM aircraft performance is stellar on the SDS200 and I'm looking forward to using it mobile instead of the 536 that is my primary mobile scanner.
The P25 simulcast performance is much better than previous Uniden products, but the Unication G5 is still better...and just about $600 for the honor of ownership too.
Thank you for the great review. I didn't see the GPS module link in the description anywhere. Did I miss it? May you have a very blessed day my friend!
It’s not linked. Check the Uniden website
Great upload my friend..
You do excellent videos and I bought a BC-125AT on your recommendation. Lots of commercial as well as military aircraft around Norfolk, VA so plenty to listen to. I'll 2nd Jim's (see below) request for an explanation of setting up quick and favorite keys using the Sentinental software. I have seen videos showing the favorites set up in the software but they never show how those settings show up and are controlled by the user and how the radio utilizes those settings. The quick keys have never been explained well at all. Appreciate you're reading and considering this suggestion. Tnx es 73
Thank you and thanks for the suggestion
I'm an avid scanner listener. Have been since I was a kid. I would often swap out crystals in any of the older Realistic and Bearcats that I had. Then when programmable versions hit the market. The tech has come a long way. Even from the first gens of programmable radios. The tech involved in the newest gen of radios humbles me. I'm definitely going to be dropping some coin on a new unit very soon. After watching many reviews I can honestly say that this has been the best review of the SDS-200 I've come across. Not to discredit other reviews. It's just this review kept my ADHD attention focused like a cat to a laser pointer.
After reading tons of reviews on this unit, starting with the ONE STARS, I admit to being a bit scared to step in on this. As many others say, I got started police scanning in Chicago back in the 50's. You tuned your normal am radio to the very bottom of the dial - and there they were - the cops! As times quickly changed, they went to 460 MHz. Then we bought a gizmo called a Clark 450 which you rubber banded to the back of your small portable radio - and bingo - there were the cops again. Even the cops used these things to get away from their cars (before the personal radios they use now). I have progressed from time to time, upgrading scanners. It's been quite a while since my last one so I think now is the time to make another upgrade But until watching your video I admit I was scared because of the obvious complexity of this unit. You showed me that I can open the box, put in a zip code, and start listening. I can progress slowly into customizing the unit and learning to fine-tune it as I go along. Thanks for an informative video, and the links you provided.
I got started monitoring everything in the 50s. Tried to get a radio to decode public service (police) and they do not exist. AL7HG
Awesome review, if I can ever afford it, I'm getting it. Maybe when when/ if we get the government stimulas payment
Great video.
Omgosh I want one!
I tell you, it is a great radio! One of the best base/mobile scanners to date in my opinion.
Glad to help also like your video .
Thank you
Weeee , another fly by close up
I forgot to mention I do really like the display on it, very nice
hen Obviously you have NEVER seen a ICOM Receiver Display, they have been doing wide displays for Decades, and they even have a SDR waterfall on the ICOM 8600 scanner.
Just bought one today
Hi great review, when you have time I would like to see you do a step by step setup of the GPS! Thank You
Thank you
RC944jim - too bad UNIDEN has NOT figured out yet , how to build GPS into its units without having to use a Cable and Hockey puck.
the ICOM R30 has built in GPS in its Radios for a Decade now and Recently came to the R30 Last Year.
Great in depth video..price new in the uk is still too high ..if one comes up second hand, I might well invest..
The price tag is steep but I think it's well worth it. I paid $550 for my bc796d 18 years ago and had to program it myself. I added the extra two County programming and that was well worth it.
Nice Review, I have now purchased the USDS100 and the SDS200E. My 200E runs off a Diamond Discone antenna and i still have my AOR8600 for Air analog reception. I am in Australia and only wish that Sentenil would establish an Australian zip code database. I have the gps module also.
So far how do you like the sds200? I ask because the 536 is a pile of junk and i am scared to waste my money on uniden scanners.
@@cdm1250uhf1 love it but I’m still learning how to program digital scanners
Would love to be able to HDMI to external monitor. That would be spectacular!
I have the BCD536HP here in VA, and it works fine. It's going to be years before I'm going to upgrade.
Has your silver rotary knob failed yet on your 536? Mine failed multiple times, it starts skipping and jumping around on the menu
@@historychannel2317 Not yet ... I don't fool with it much. It's kind of loose though...
Thank you so much for being so articulate explaining all the great features this radio has to offer.... So, after a few years using this radio are you still happy with it? LM
Good review. I have 4 996p2s that I may start moving out to upgrade. Not fully decided. Btw, the color is cyan (sigh-ann) not cayenne like a pepper.
Thanks
I am from Boston I have P996, SDS100, I am going to watch this video a decide weather I will purchase SDS200
LAN should really be in the back, also I wish someone would add another tuner to these so we could have real-time trunking priority like we can with something like Unitrunker.
I would love to see those things as well
I bought the 996P2 and I thought that was a great scanner. But then I bought the SDS100 cause someone said the simulcast issue was fixed. I'm BLOWN away with the SDS100. I wanted a better mobile scanner though, so I bought the 536HP, and to be honest I was let down. The 536HP is a mix between rhe SDS100 and the 996P2. I've had the 536hp for less than a week and I ordered the SDS200 today. If you have the SDS100 you're definitely likely to get the SDS200.
You will LOVE the SDS200 vs the 536.
Michael - the SDS only receives Simulcast better, its Actually LESS sensitive for Conventional VHF/UHF.
Just got mine from bearcat warehouse I’m retired Batchief and LEO. It’s one of the best rigs on the market but word to the wise you must have internet to get full functionality out of it out here in bfe none so have to go into town to get upgrades downloads etc other than that it’s worth the price.
Hey I’m from Arkansas to, I’m In wynne. I’m very close to Memphis. I have the sds100. It’s the best radio I’ve bought yet
It’s a great scanner! The 200 is even better in my opinion. It picks up signals better.
Chris - then its Obvious you have NOT tried the AOR DV-10 and the ICOM R30 at your local HAM store, they are Superior Scanners.
Mark Plott incorrect sir, I’ve owned both and they don’t do p25 trunking .also own a Unication g5. I’m also a ham radio operator so I know what I’m talking about.
@@SuperCritter1 - NEVER claimed or said that the ICOM R30 or the AOR DV-10 did do Trunking. they CAN however SCAN Conventionally and with DUAL VFO so they can Receive two channels at the same time.
the Quality of Reception is higher and it can even DEFEAT Simulcast systems.
and they can SCAN at a Brisk 200ch/sec.
Love the video very in-depth tutorial. I just received my SDS 200 today and I stream over broadcastify. And a lot of CZcams videos covering the scanner I see a lot of people are using the same type land cable to connect to the router. I noticed it does not come with the scanner or at least I did not receive one and I do not see it on uniden website could you please tell me where I could find one at thank you in advance for any and all help
Hello Matt! Since you’ve had both the Sds100 and Sds200 for awhile now which would you prefer out of the two? I hear the screen is brighter and crisper on the portable Sds100. Thanks for your return input on this my friend.
Does it light up on an indicator light for the different agencies at all? I know some of the older radios do and I like this feature. Really interested in this scanner, thanks for the review
VERY NOICE!
Thank you
I’ve always wondered investing in the handheld or base, I’ve always got the handheld so you can take it when traveling and easier to conceal if you want to be discreet say at an event. I guess if you have the money just get both
Both is great but if I was only getting one it’d be the handheld
Yea ordered the sds 100, so I have a bcd436 too. Guess I’ll test both. (Didn’t know the SDS was out when I ordered the 436)
How did the Diamond antenna improve the over all reception of the SDS200. I just purchased the SDS200 so I have alot to learn. Thank you for your coments.
It works good for VHF high. A good 800mhz antenna is better for 800 band
when the power goes out, is there a way to do a battery backup? i would like to see it with a battery pack, like the icom-705 portable ham radio. i like your reviews and i'm a scanner nut since bearcat crystal radios in the 70's. i'm a fan of realistic (RIP) and i use a pro-2035 that's alway's on 24/7. also have a pro-26 but needs audio speaker repair. GREAT SHOW, and easy to understand, keep up the great work...
Hi Matt:
Enjoyed your review of the SDS200. We have a P25 Simulcast Trunk System in our area. I had a BCD996P2
for one day and then I was told that it was no good for this type of system so I returned it. Would the DSD200
receive this kind of system? Thanks.
I'm in love! I have the 536hp.but I want this! Can you program it with software? Mainly can u use the sentenal software? Thanks! Awesome review
Absolutely you can program it with the sentinel. It is an awesome radio.
Great video. What's the arrow icon in the upper right corner of the display?
I would like to see a video about setting up favorites and quick keys.
Thanks for the suggestion
Me, too!
I would like a video setting favorites and quick keys also.
If I had the money I would buy it.the number one thing that this scanner rocks is the upfated simcast reception. A lot of scanner have a touph time with simcast so uden fixed that with 100 200.my state runs standard p25 phase 1 no phase 2 in my state. Its digital with analog towers.there's no 800 mgz.just 151 hz.but my 436 hp works awsome with most reception. I pick up a towns 165 miles in the moutains of wy.
Simulcast reception is great on this scanner for sure!
Everything about this scanner is excellent … except the mobile application. In many modern vehicles, there is not enough room to allow for the full unit. I need a remote head. That's where Whistler has them beat with the TRX-2. But, in my opinion, that's the only area.
A remote head would be great. I think this unit is an excellent base scanner.
Time for a follow up review
Vielen Dank
Thanks for the review. I have thd SDS100; how is the analog receive and audio quality... Is the internarl speaker better than the SDS100 on analog rx?
Love your review on the SDS200. I'm 86 and been listening since 1960 when all we had were tunable radios. I've had Bearcats, Motorola handhelds and mobile units. I'm also a Ham Radio Operator with a General Class license. I can well afford the cost but will I be able to program it? I'm only interested in local PD, FD and my State District in NE Iowa, maybe local Air. Is there anyplace I can call if I get in a bind? One last question. Am I only going to hear my frequencies when I'm near a tower, or will I hear it wherever I happen to be?
Wunderschön Stücken....
That sds200 is an amazing radio!!! It works even better than my 436. A little expensive but well worth it... especially if you're an aviation, railroad, and severe weather enthusiast like me. I definitely have a need for scanners. Anyone have any suggestions for a nice indoor antenna for this bad boy? Stock antennas arent worth a dam.
The Diamond RH77CA (linked in description of this video) is an excellent antenna for airband, vhf high, and even does good on 800.
Always better to have an outdoor antenna mounted as high as possible. With scanner antennas a discone is a great option,, and low cost. You can make one yourself with a SO-239 connector, some wire and a few screws. With a little shopping, $10 - 15 plus a coax cable is all you will ever need.
They should have made it so when you tune in a TV channel the screen turns into a TV screen.
I use a ruber duck works awsome in my state.there's no encryption at all in my town.not even car to car or tac.
That’s great
very intrigued - thanks for sharing! - 73 N0AGI
Are there any plans for a new version of the sds100/200? They're been around for a long time now. I have the 100 and want the 200 but I'm waiting for the next version to come out before pulling the trigger. It's pricey. A 32gb maximum size SD card is a bit on the embarrassing side also.
I like the comparison you made between the cost of this scanner and a cell phone. AFAIC, anything more than $200 for a cell phone makes it overpriced.
Hi, I purchased this SDS200 a year ago but still having a slight problem of just choosing some local towns PD and our one county PD to set up to scan just those. Where to go to learn to how to to set up this radio.
Great review Matt. I'm torn between the SDS200 & 100. In your review of the 100 you stated that you will not get the performance out of a handheld like you do with a base/mobile unit. Do you honestly believe that the 200 performs better? Also, there seems to be a lot of 100's for sale on RR.?? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks, Rick
Same boat here, except I think I'll go with the 200. I'll either be using in my shop at home or in my pickup when traveling, so I guess it makes sense - for me.
Looking for local HCSO, PCT 4, and any Local HPD. I have a BC500C, not picking up any frequency in 600 to 700+. Im 0 to 500, then 800+. I get alot of sound quality issues and looking for clean strong signal. What do you recommend? Would this unit work?
Whereabouts in Arkansas are you? I'm NEA here. Also, can you throw any long wire antenna on there like an OCF dipole that I used for HF, but now primarily for SW monitoring?
Mat is there any way to have the scanner display can be displayed to a monitor ?
What would you say is the best aerial for the SDS200?
my favorite future of that police scanner
Is p25 phase 2
It sounds so good!
Won't matter. Those with p25 phase 2 will be encrypted
Few years back I had a Home Patrol scanner. It had issues with the Uniden database you had to download to use the radio. Uniden was less than helpful to the owners of that radio. It became a big deal. Have they delt with it by now or is Uniden still being difficult? Their "go pound sand" attatude soured me on Uniden products since then.
What Antenna would you recommend on a $1000 scanner/Antenna budget?
Sir - I plan to put a scanner in my shack and leave on 8-12 hours. How does this baby handle heat? Is the portable SDS-100 model better when it comes to this issue?
Can you put a few zip codes in at one time, or is it linited to one zip code? Also, does it pick up DMR right out of the box? There's lots of DMR in my area.
Great video, just bought mine. What software did you use, not sure if I missed that in the video. Also did your screen go haywire and all the characters turn "pixilated" and shake? Mine did on the 3 day of use. Uniden does not seem to know what the problem is and wants me to ship it back, which I am doing. Very disappointed such an expensive scanner fails like that on the 3rd day of use.
I haven’t had that issue. I use the free Uniden software
Excellent review and excellent radio.
So would the Uniden BCD996P2 pick up all the same frequencies and systems as the SDS200? The difference being the features like display and recording, etc?
I am seeing quite a bit of DMR in my area and from what I am reading, the 996P2 will pick up DMR with a free firmware upgrade. Also see some NXDN but not enough to justify the paid upgrade but I think the 996P2 picks that up too? At about half the price the 996P2 might be a better option if you don't need the extra features of the SDS200 as long as it picks up the same frequencies and systems.
Yes, it will but the DMR upgrade is not free on the 996P2. It is a paid upgrade.
@@monitoringreviews Okay thank you.
Hello, i am wondering does this scanner or any scanner on the market now days have something like accessibility mode ? Something like audio feedback when pressing buttons or twisting knobs ? I am asking cause i am blind and i am looking for a scanner that can make my life easier :) thanks in advance Mak greets
If you do another review, show us how to use the USB and other ports. Specifically, if I record something - is it just a matter of inserting a memory stick into the USB to have it write the file(s) involved?
Good advice. Thanks.
How is the headphone sound? I ordered the 20watt speaker and the tri band antenna
What do you mean when you said the SDS100 airband is "lacking in the airband reception"? The SDS100 has the commercial airband frequencies. Could it be an antenna issue? I'm just wondering because I'm on the fence between the SDS100 and SDS200. I like the small size of the SDS100 but I also listen to airshows. Any help would be appreciated.
I mean the sensitivity isn’t as good on the sds100 as other scanners I’ve used
Where can I get that mounting board ? Thanks, Mark
Nice review Matt. I like the 200. May treat myself.. How's that SDS100 stand holding up for you ?
Working perfect! Thank you!
I've had my SDS100 for a while now and its killer! It blows the 536hp away.
It is a fantastic radio!
Could you please explain how to set up the alerts? I have followed the instructions but I cannot get any alerts. Thanks a
Does the silver knob that controls the (PUSH /FUNC) function feel like it has some wiggle to it? I got a new sds200 today and compared to the volume and squelch it feels loose.
Their all like that.
Did they fix the hum problem within the unit coming from the speaker I’ve been reading about? Also I understand it had a receiving problem where it would like mute or stop receiving in the middle of a transmission then the signal would come back in. Thanks for the info Sir!
Yes the hum issue has been corrected and all new units have the fix. I’ve only seen 1 with the mute issue on radio reference. Mine has never had that happen and I’ve ran it for days and days.
Monitoring Reviews Thanks for the quick reply! I have the Uniden Home Patrol 2 now and was looking to update.
It’s a great radio to upgrade to. You would love the lcd update for sure.
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I have a question about the paid upgrade options to the radio you spoke about, if one wants to in the future upgrade their radio, is that done through a firmware upgrade or does the radio need to be sent to Uniden to have them do it?
You can register your scanner at my.uniden.com from there you purchase the upgrade(s) you want and you get a code. You then input that code into your scanner and it unlocks that mode.
Awesome. Thanks!! @@monitoringreviews
Hello Matt new to your channel new to scanners as well I like the sds100 but a little pricey can you recommend something from uniden that will be good for a beginner would like to listen to police, weather ....
Have you run across problems with knobs skipping skipping bars on search menu program menu One bar the 2 bars jumping up-and-down On the SDS 200
Really nice looking radio! But my area they are starting to scramble their radio transmissions so not wasting my money on one I have two p25 scanners and they are worthless.
