    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    Ms. Gruwell (Hilary Swank) confronts Andre (Mario) about his self evaluation assignment.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    Assigned the thankless task of teaching freshman English at a gang-infested Long Beach, CA high school, a 23-year-old teacher resorts to unconventional means of breaking through to her hardened students in director Richard LaGravenese's adaptation of Erin Gruwell's best-seller The Freedom Writer's Diaries: How a Teacher and 150 Teens Used Writing to Change Themselves and the World Around Them. Her students had been written off, and her chances of succeeding scoffed at, but Erin Gruwell (Hilary Swank) wasn't about to go down without a fight. Long Beach is a place where a new war is waged with each passing day, and when the hardened students who walk those dangerous hallways sense an outsider attempting to understand their plight, their cynical resentment threatens to keep a deadly cycle in motion. Despite the initially hostile reaction she receives in the classroom, Gruwell uses the writings of Anne Frank and Zlata's Diary: A Child's Life in Sarajevo to teach her students not only the basis of the English language, but compassion and tolerance as well. Later, when the time comes to tell their own tales in a project specially designed to explore the daily violence that the majority of students have grown numb to, the barriers that had once stood so strong gradually begin to crumble. When the only chance for survival is to befriend the person who was once your mortal enemy, the world is opened to a whole new realm of possibilities.

      HappyHalloween You do know this is a true story right? This is realistic, just cause we don't see much of it, doesn't mean it isn't real. This is very much real, & this is what the world needs. But too many disrespectful kids, cause the laws changed & parents can't displine their kids, cause now days they consider it child abuse which is complete BS in my book. But never think this isn't real, cause it's very real, it's rare but still real.

      HappyHalloween Yes but it's based on a true story. Yes Hollywood, actors & all, but it's based on a real story. This teacher actually gave a damn, the rest of the staff & vice principal & all disliked her, cause they'd already given up on these students, thinking that they'll just end up dead, in prison, homeless, & whatever else. But she actually took the time to teach them, & got them to like & accept each other despite their race, getting deals on brand new books, paying for field trips outta her own pocket, she was so dedicated to her job, & showing these kids that they can have a better future then what their environment had shown them that it even cost her, her marriage. This is an awesome movie.

      That's the biggest problem. Most of these parents of these students (just like in Coach Carter) had no business having sex and retaining custody of their kids in the first place because they all have mental problems that prevent them from behaving like rational loving parents are supposed to behave toward their kids. So the kids never learn to trust properly because they have terrible role models at home who are selfishly focused on their own problems and don't have the willingness to take on someone else's set of issues. The teachers at the school can only do so much to motivate within the classroom. It's up to the student to navigate their personal lives outside of school to try to stay on point with their academic tasks which can feel like a full-time job in itself pending the level of stress they have going on at home. =(

      @Happy-gv2mf Před 6 lety +11

      Sherry D. Dunn its the student's responsibility to complete their assigned work. Teachers are not obliged to chase after them for outstanding work. Williful ignorance shall not be tolerated, as it is also to prepare students for the real work. If employees are forgetful or neleglect assigned work then theyre fired.

    • @jonathanakerele8006
      @jonathanakerele8006 Před 6 lety +5

      That's a valid point but you got to remember illegal stuff in the real world like corporate bailouts happen all the time too. It depends on who are are aligned with an how much money and political power that organization has. So yeah the students still have to try just like the worker still has to fill his quota if he wants that paycheck but both can be emotionally draining and hard to do if the environment whether it's the workplace, the school, or the home as far as the people in it working against the student/worker achieving his stuff. So yeah no one's gonna bail out these low on the totem pole students and low wage workers but that doesn't mean they don't have stressful places they still have to navigate around people who don't give two bananas whether they achieve their goals or not. So yeah they still gotta push through and do the work, but a little understanding of what they have to go against would be nice so as not to seem callous. =(

      It's great to know that the real-life character felt it was as impactful in his life as it comes across in the movie. I took it to mean a huge wake up call in another direction also. In my opinion, what Mrs. G is saying here is that Andre hasn't given himself the credit he deserves. He wants something better in his life, but all of the people close to him & who surround him feel that his fate is already sealed. He's destined to fall into serious trouble like his brother has. When his brother was convicted, it caused Andre to give up on the belief that he could realize his goals. So, he started skipping school & returned to the drug game. Mrs. G told him, "You are not failing." You've been trying & we all should know that whenever you try you can't fail. She was also saying that she wouldn't give up on him, so he better not dare give up on himself. For those of us who are too hard on ourselves & lose perspective of how things really are sometimes, this is a very powerful scene.

    That part is a bit of a tear jerker, when she says "I see you, & you are not failing" she believed in them unlike everyone else. Teachers take the time with their students like she did, they'll most likely turn out better, but yet some just live in that environment, that no matter how hard you try, they still manage to screw up. I understand when a person wants respect, & in a violent environment, they've gotta kill to get respect or break the law on some other way. I'm not getting respect by breaking the law, I'm getting respect by being a good person & staying the fuck away from violence & crime.

      But the good teachers often ARE like that! They're so talented and wonderful in a people management sense that they become exactly what we need as teenagers and just as volatile as a teenager's emotions are, they reciprocate with the required volatile reaction!
      I remember a teacher doing just this, can see it so clearly from over 15 years ago as she sternly tells me off for doing something stupid, then expresses the care to show me why I should listen and then immediately flips to a short smile to finish with encouragement.
      Teachers like that ought to really be paid and treated so much better

    This scene actually makes me cry a lot because I imagine myself as Andre in this scene just feeling all alone in the world with no one around to try to help me or understand my situation or how I think or how I feel so I also struggle with feeling low at times (particularly being a loner with narcissistic relatives who are always loud and complaining). Sometimes I feel they don't even want me around. They don't say it outright but their constant anger and pointing at my faults and ordering me around like I'm lazy tells me a different story. =(

      First of all if you don't mind me asking . How are you feeling now? Also I know exactly how you feel. In the environment I've have in the past , it hasn't been the best ( sure I have the basic needs and stuff) but I'm constantly surrounded by selfish, hypocrites and bad people who only think about themselves (a.k.a. my so called family ). Your definitely not alone cause I understand perfectly what is like to be struggling with this feelings, thoughts that get so out of control that you start to lose yourself in that process and to be with people that instead of helping you , they just want to crush every bit of good thing happens in your life when all you need is just someone that gives you support. But you know what ? who cares about any of them, its better to be alone than to walk on a wrong path and reach for your dreams. One thing that this experience has taught me is that it made me stronger, kinder and wiser along the way. Never let your that environment destroy you. We made it before, so were gonna make it now too. May the force be with you.

Those small, simple words that shows someone cares enough too help getting out of the mess.

She connected with them even if it was getting their phrases wrong to make them laugh that is what a good teacher does! You can see that she genuinely cares about her students like I know when I went to school some kids were given up on for whatever reason but certain teachers showed them "okay you might in your words "suck" at lessons but you're good with practical lessons" and taught them how to do something with that instead of focusing on the negative xxx

    This shows what a real teacher is all about, it's not just about sitting in class and having students learn something and then outside of the class be nothing to them. A real teacher doesn't allow someone to fail when they can see potential in them, they bring out that side of them and make them better than what they were, even if they have to force it out of them. Terrible that most teachers are just there to get paid no matter what instead of actually taking their jobs seriously

      Yeah it's a good thing that Mario knew she wasn't gonna let him give up on himself and that was doing his best on the assignments,it reminded me of me when I needed a actual push to try again when I was struggling to be a better great student.I was a young stubborn kid luckily since I studied a lot I was able to tackle certain issues I had,and learn how to be responsible by working a bit harder.When you have someone to care for you you'll realize your just as worth it as everyone else no matter your back ground or what color you are.

    This is 2023, I'm almost 30 years old now, I am hating the job I am doing now and even if I try hard I am not reaching my targets at work. I did not get promotion nor hike in salary because of that and the worst part is that even if the salary is low I can't quit it. When the self evaluation sheets come I feel so low that I wanna throw the laptop away and run away, but this scene is making me think otherwise. I am see thing particular scene daily since a week before going to work. It makes me feel that I am not a loser and I still have a chance in this world.
