CLIP DESCRIPTION:
A student reads his diary entry expressing why Ms. Gruwell's (Hilary Swank) class gives him hope.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Assigned the thankless task of teaching freshman English at a gang-infested Long Beach, CA high school, a 23-year-old teacher resorts to unconventional means of breaking through to her hardened students in director Richard LaGravenese's adaptation of Erin Gruwell's best-seller The Freedom Writer's Diaries: How a Teacher and 150 Teens Used Writing to Change Themselves and the World Around Them. Her students had been written off, and her chances of succeeding scoffed at, but Erin Gruwell (Hilary Swank) wasn't about to go down without a fight. Long Beach is a place where a new war is waged with each passing day, and when the hardened students who walk those dangerous hallways sense an outsider attempting to understand their plight, their cynical resentment threatens to keep a deadly cycle in motion. Despite the initially hostile reaction she receives in the classroom, Gruwell uses the writings of Anne Frank and Zlata's Diary: A Child's Life in Sarajevo to teach her students not only the basis of the English language, but compassion and tolerance as well. Later, when the time comes to tell their own tales in a project specially designed to explore the daily violence that the majority of students have grown numb to, the barriers that had once stood so strong gradually begin to crumble. When the only chance for survival is to befriend the person who was once your mortal enemy, the world is opened to a whole new realm of possibilities.

" I should of asked something less expensive for christmas" not gonna lie it my eyes water
blastonabusterx3 yes, every time!!
ikr
blastonabusterx3 right
Absolutely. No kid should have to feel bad for asking for something for Christmas
that line hit me like bullets
I watched the director's commentary on the DVD and what amkes this scene even more moving is that he said the young man who read from the journal wasn't really an actor and had no interest in pursuing acting. The young man took the job for the money so he could put it toward going to engineering school. It makes his performance all the more powerful.
TheaterRaven same with the black boy with the red sweater who got killed he was doing boxing and was doing well his coach got him a little gold chain with boxing gloves and he was at a dennys and someone robbed him for it and killed him
@@vaultofterror8083 an actor in this movie got killed?
@@aGwEENapple yeah the one that got angry during the store scene, the man that wanted his money back got killed in real life before the movie got released in theaters
Hes a buddy of mine from middle school really cool dude.
@@raulmartinez2841 your buddy should of pursued acting. He did a very excellent job for somebody who has no experience in acting. This scene hits home. Glad your buddy is doing ok.

im gonna use this for my school exam essay thankssss
@@Cooz. and this hahahah
This scene is awesome but they left out the most emotional part of it (for me at least) and that was when the black dude with tears in his eyes came up and hugged him because he knew his struggle. Great scene, nonetheless.
this reminds me of my college class. we were open exactly like this.
I wish we had classes like this.
GTFO you're nothing like this

“I am home” , how he grew up is heart breaking. And he deserves better in life, but the greatest gift is. This. He finally after the these years found a safe spot to call home. It might not be shelter . But emotionally and mentally , he has a home for the first time . Which could lead to amazing things 💕 love this movie
"I looked up at the sky waiting for something to happen" Hits me every time.
It be like that. And nothin good ever happens. Makes u wonder why hope for things that’ll never come.
This scene always makes me cry too. It's the best scene in the movie to me. It really captures how a teacher can impact her students' lives and it shows the students' appreciation for their teacher. This is why I became a teacher!
Teacher? Respect!
God bless. Good teachers and guides are some of the best blessings in a person's life
This scene really hit home with me. We were evicted 3 years ago. Had to live with other folks and shelters. Those times were tough but we certainly made it through. I started doing affirmations. After a year I ended up getting a better paying job and we got a new place two years after. It did take work and diligence on top of repeating positive self talk. But it was achieved. I am truly grateful. Adversity can make you or break you. I am home with my own home. Truly grateful.
This movie and the book are amazing. Ms. G is such a good person for helping those classes. Last year, my teacher read the book to my class and then we watched the movie, and I'm really glad we did. My class wrote letters to her afterwards asking if Ms G would come to our school to meet us and she did. She was really sweet and afterwards invited us to watch a presentation thing on it, and we got to meet one of the Freedom Writers.
Same here, she just came to my school
Now I am 23. As a child I experienced evictions and homelessness between the ages of around 7-17.
10 whole years of every year moving houses. Sleeping in RV's, cars, motels.
I'm not telling you this to get likes or attention. I'm telling you because the shame of going to a high school freshman year every day and striving to achieve good grades feels meaningless when other kids are making plans to buy food from the Ralphs next door, or go play xBox with their football teammates, or get picked up even in a normal Sedan or even worse, where I went to school, kids by 16 had Mustangs and Corvettes. Me? My biggest fear was my parents pulling up in the car with our luggage packed showing out of the back of the hatchback, or staying in the parking lot until I got off to find out they couldn't pay for the motel we were staying in. Or worse, dreading how after school I was going to get home and the terrible secret of being homeless and no one knew. While everyone smiled around me, I was dying inside. I thought many times, maybe if I didn't ask for this for Christmas. Maybe if I didn't ask for a birthday. All the money over the years would have equaled the rent. Now it's to the point where I have great shame asking for a birthday, for a gift, sometimes I'm scared to buy nose clippers or spend $100 with my friends after 3 weeks of saving my paychecks because what if I have nowhere to live and it may be the difference between a night in a bed and a night on a bench?
Just saying. I know exactly how this child protrayed by this actor felt because he was me. He is me. He is a lot of children in America.
I hope you are doing okay😔🙏
Sending lots of love and I hope you are doing better now.
God bless you
I feel ur pain 🙏 to u and family!.
Hope you doing okay. 💖
I had a teacher just like her, and I loved him so much we would spend hours having a class conversation he's been such a big inspiration in my life. I can relate too what this guy was saying
young I had a teacher like her very good memory she understand and I understood her....
This scene literally gets me every time. And the way Marcus gets up and hugs him. 😭 Hits me in the feels!
Ms. Gruwell came to talk at my school today, her niece goes to my school. She gave an incredible speech, respect to all these kids.
The part that got me was when he said that his mom telling him sorry because she couldn't pay the house
Gosh... Every time I watch this movie and this part comes on I start tearing up 😢😢😢😢😢 , that part really touched me .
Ciara we're did u see the movie if u dnt mind me asking:)?
Melissa Green I have the DVD
Foreal its sad
What makes it more powerful is that he is reading it from the original notebook of one of the Real life students
Actually??
This scene is so powerful!
I need to afford. Flood insurance because this is just so emotional but really beautiful 😢😢😌😌
Whos on your profile pic
“My moms tears hit my shirt like bullets” this makes me cry every time 😢

What was once hatred and intolerance became peace and understanding. This class became unified together because no matter how different they were they always had similarities with each other. The fact they came together and supported one another is a true testament to the human spirit. ❤️
This part brings me to tears every time.
I cried when they all just hugged him at the end
I actually want to cry now. This movie says so much about the REAL world and how it works. And the sad thing is, most of the time, those poor kids never even become happy and make it like the kids in the movie do. They end up dead or worse.
They’re not poor, they just don’t know the wealth in loving thy neighbor
I had to watch this during English class and I was sitting with my crush during this scene and I started balling my eyes out and my crush hugged me... This scene will forever make me cry
1:15 this part hit me. The subtle look to him like I feel you man.
Was hard for each student to have a voice but they did it.
The book is really good!!!! I cried when I came across his diary entry. I understood his pain fully!
the first time i saw this, I cried alot
This movie makes me cry every time. Especially, this scene
This speech made me cry
Its 2019 and this movie still makes me cry everytime
That was so sad! ;(
I love freedom writers
If this doesn't tug at your heartstrings, you're dead inside. Life isn't so hard when you compare it to those who have less than you and who suffer more than you.
The whole movie is a melody of heartstrings.
I think that was the movie I spent the most time crying for~
It does feel better at the end, but... There are still a few lingering notes in the soul, whispering 'be thankful, someone else is hurting right now, and it's not because of a movie'.
I'm glad I got it good, that I made something of myself and learned to fend for myself and my family too... But it also made me realize... To be humble. Very humble.
we need more teachers like this in the school system, a teacher that could make a child's world not feel so hopeless and fearful and make them feel at home.
Wholesome and brave character to even tell anyone this . I don't know who this actor is but he is very talented.
This movie is one of the greatest movies of all time.
This scene made me cry so hard. You really never know how bad someone's life might be outside of school 🥺
I'm a teacher, I try everyday to be a good teacher, this movie helps me a lot to understand everyone is struggling with something but I try to bring hope and opportunities to each one of my students, maybe in the future they're going to remember me.. but if they don't, i just want them to be happy and good people.
Thanks ❤ 😊 for teaching our kids!!!
I'm a pornstar
This movie is so damn powerful, especially now with the way the world is going. I cry every single time I watch this movie. The music really makes it even more emotional.
It's funny how, in my freshman/sophomore year in high school.(85/88) Mr. Mozingo.
We had a diary, that we wrote in it every day too...(Mr.Mozingo) He told us wright whatever we wanted to. He said, he's not going to read it. But, at the end of the year, we did, read it out loud to the class..I'm 51 year's old today.(09/18/21... I STILL REMEMBER THAT DAY... GOD-BLESS MY CLASSMATES...❤❤❤❤❤
Especially, Mr.Mozingo,(teacher) Michael Wilson and Willie Hoffman..I'll never forget you all....🤙✌💪🤟💯
P.S. I LOVE THIS MOVIE 🎬 IT BROUGHT TEARS...😥😢😰 AND YES, I WAS IN ROOM 201/202/203 DAME,!!! I CAN'T REMEMBER...🤔
soooo touching. awww. the teacher deserves this, she really cared for these kids.
This movie makes me cry. I've been through stuff and it reminds me of all those who had it worse than me. I am grateful to have what I have. I wish I could help youth at risk, but today...that is nearly impossible because they are broken inside.
Jeez! I've watched five of these clips so far and everyone has had me in tears. Nearly 50 and sobbing like a baby. Wtaf!
Makes me feel stupid for all the things I took for granted back then
This was absolutely the best part of this movie. I bawl every time I see it...
To Miss Alice Cayen, Reseda High School
I will always remember you and everyone who shared their lives in that small "valley" high school. To this day this movie always takes me back to your classroom; thank you Miss Cayen i will always carry you in my heart.
Also Mr. Jonathan Sison, Portola Junior High, i know you went to Japan to teach english, you were my first inspiration to just be a good person, overalll a professional in anything i did in life; thanks man you were a good teacher.......thank you.

I only ever had one class in high school where everyone was cool with one another & it felt like one big family
Shout out to Ms.Agresti 👏🏼👏🏼
This scene never fails to make me bawl my eyes out.
I read the book already and this made me cry still. It just hits me that not only this was true, but these kids endured alot and I wonder how they are today. Have they moved on? What changes did they make of themselves? I want to meet the actual people already
never cried so hard.. took an acting class and this scene got me to cry on que and igot the part.. this is sooo sad and touching.. the writing to this was crazy deep
Lot of people don't realize how lucky they it. Being evicted from your house is painful

I REALLY REALLY TRIED NOT TO CRY BUT I COULDN'T EVERY TIME I WATCH THIS MOVIE
That part where it says I should of got somtin less expensive crushed my hart 😭
This movie shaped me a bit when I was a kid, made me realise race don’t matter community matters people matter
What he wrote in is journal about his teacher Mrs. Gruwell was beautiful.
I CRIED AT THIS SCENE SOOOOO HARD
this was so emotional i could not stop tears on my face...
And people wonder why people start selling drugs everyone wanna judge especially the ones that grew up in good households
This guy is a good friend of my old teacher (the real guy who wrote this.) He came too our school before and talked to us, and signed one copy of the book. It was a wonderful experience. Still think about it to this day.
This part hits so hard every single time this was one of the hardest scenes to watch
This was really the saddest part 🥲🥺💔 but amen I will respect it. 🙏🏼
This scene hits me every time

I just wanna say I watched this movie and it is a must watch just the fact that it’s based on a true story is so inspirational and this is just such a powerful movie and it really reminds you how lucky you are and that one act of kindness can go such a far way
Such an amazing movie
Damn this hits home man. No matter how many times I watch this I always be like "Ok so basically I'm Monky"
Home is not a place, it's where your heart is
eviction is no joke, I almost got evicted from my house when I was a kid, and luckily, we pay the bills last second, it's a struggle to get by in life, knowing that any time you lose your house, you know, I hope everybody is happy, happy 2020
Nice essay, ese.
Jim Halpert :There it is.
End scene.
No one really knew who he was but embraced him at the end. love it!
I love this movie and this part, from the beginning of the story, makes my skin crawl and puts me on the brink of crying.
Love how he said I AM HOME and she replies YES YOU ARE 😭❤
It’s just a scene
The scene:
Once in a blue moon I cry, and this is one of those scenes that make me shed a tear. Change is possible and you can make it happen. And I have this movie and event to thank for my motivation in life
This part always gives me the chills.
This is my favorite movie
Too emotional 😭
I love this guy and I hope life treats him well .
