I was an anxious kid who used to stutter. I still remember my music teachers laughing at me after I struggled to put a sentence together at age 12. This memory stuck with me for the rest of my life! I then had a sociology teacher during my two final years of school who used to encourage me, praise and motivate me to always do better. She used to send me small emails congratulating me. I am now a lawyer and a large part of my job is talking, so I sometimes find it hard to believe how much life has changed all because of one teacher. Without her, I don't think I would even dream to pursue the career I have now.

He wasn't even a professor, but a graduate assistant in a class I didn't even really want to take -- macro economics. Even so, it sticks out as one of the best classes I took. I tracked him down at another university and sent him a brief email thanking him. He seemed touched that I took the time to do that. Doesn't take much to be a bright spot in someone's day.

"I don't ever want a student to suffer in silence" murdered me. I emailed a professor in my university saying that I wasn't coming to class that day because I wasn't feeling mentally well and asked if I could have an extension on one of my projects.
Being a party school, I could have just made that up because I was hungover or something. He didn't have to believe me. BUT he gave a week extension on all of my projects and gave me a list of phone numbers if I needed to talk to anyone.
He was a competitive runner and always did marathons, but he recently broke his ankle and said he used these phone numbers to get him out of his depression. He for real didn't have to tell me that he understood or give me extensions or have a list of phone numbers for me, but he did and I appreciated it so much. By far my favorite teacher I've ever had.

I had no idea what I wanted to do when I grew up, and she pulled me aside one day and essentially told me, “I think you’re supposed to be a writer, dude.” Never occurred to me. Now, it’s all I wanna do. I bumped into her in my early 20’s working behind a cash register. I was actually kind of embarrassed, but she was just proud of me for being me. @@PYasco 1. Be YOU. Some things work well for one teacher, and won't work at all for other teachers. Kids can also tell very quickly if you're putting on a facade, and they hate it - particularly teenagers.
      2. Set the bar high, but never be unwilling to work with those who can't meet high standards. Kids who are challenged can surprise you - and more importantly, they can surprise themselves. Don't let them just go through the motions. (Bloom's taxonomy is your friend.) At the same time, realize that no matter how they try, there are those who will not be able to meet truly challenging goals. Encourage these students and make clear how important their effort is and how much you respect that they're making it.
      3. Constantly learn. You never know when a new piece of information will help you to understand things, or to teach more effectively.
      4. You're not teaching the subject - you're teaching how to think. It's not going to matter in 20 years what specific books kids read, how they did on their math test, or if they can remember the GDP of Luxembourg. What WILL matter is that they've learned how to find information, assimilate it, and use it to reach their goals. Skills are vital.
      5. Be fair. Kids will break rules and screw up. You can't take things personally - just enforce the rules fairly, no matter how much things might seem like an attack on you, and no matter which kids are doing it. Don't hold grudges against kids who have screwed up in the past - when the discipline has been taken care of and the accounts are balanced, be willing to let them start over with a clean slate. Students who have discipline problems will often respect someone who treats them fairly but makes sure they follow the rules. It makes them more willing to try to follow the rules when they know the rules aren't arbitrary, and they aren't going to be judged forever on the basis of a single mistake.

Max was never 1 of my students but he still knew me and I knew him. It was a small town school in central IL. I remember him mid test looking up and saying: Mr. Cooper. Do you wanna know why every student in this school loves you? I responded by saying: well max, you’re supposed to be doing your test but yes, please tell me. And then he said: weather it’s the smelliest kid in the school OR the most popular kid in the school, you treat everybody the same. 💔💔💔 FML. These words wrecked my head and heart. They still swim through my existence nearly 15 years later. So much that when I interviewed for the current role I am in; doing medical social work. And when I made it to the last phasing of interviews, knowing this role would be setting me up to assist a variety of people, in a variety of scenarios, when the upper management lady asked me: Cooper, why should we hire you
. i took a second to think about it, smiled and then I said

I have a relative who's a HS teacher. Couple of years ago she had a student come back to see her. He's now going to a big university on a scholarship and came back to tell her how much he appreciated her pushing him and encouraging him. She said there's no better gift a teacher can get then to know she really made a difference in a kid's life.

This made me ccrryyy because I immediately thought of my biology teacher in high school. I was in class & I was having a horrible mental health week. In the midst of the classroom being in complete chaos I guess I looked really disassociated & sad. She pulled me outside & asked me what was going on because I usually look engaged despite me being the quiet one & I just burst out in tears & said “I don’t know”. She offered to call my mom & I said no because I knew my mom wouldn’t understand. I will never forget the tight hug she gave me. When I looked at her she looked like she was going to cry herself. I will always appreciate & remember her for her attentiveness & compassion 😭.

As a teacher this is what we dream of. It’s why we do this. Everyone says “if I can just change one life” and when it happens it fills your heart. I taught 10th grade history and my 2nd year as a teacher I had this kid that came from a broken home, drugs around him, being bullied, I don’t wanna get into how I helped him because it’s his story, but man it has to have been 15 years later I get a letter in the mail. It has pictures of him and his husband, he’s telling me how if it wasn’t for me he wouldn’t have made it through to the end of that day and now his life is full and he’s happy. I’m not a person that cares about possessions that much but I’ll always keep that letter and those pictures in the top drawer of my nightstand

I agree. Sometimes I feel so tired and I'm always broke. Parents have a lot of demands and don't realize how much it requires..I kept all the letters I received from students. It honestly meant a lot to me, and I want every student to feel loved and supported. I could not manage to have my own children, but every child I teach is my child.

    TEACHERS
your job isn’t just your job. You may be someone a kid doesn’t have at home. You may be the support they don’t have. You may be the only love they feel in their childhood. Be kinder, more supportive and more understanding of your kids. We need more kindness in the world.

Before I left high school, I wrote a letter to my three favorite teachers and read it aloud to them. They were three of the kindest people I had ever known, and they saved my life. I was suicidal for most of my time in high school and they gave me the hope and self-esteem to keep going. I cried while reading it. It felt so amazing to show them the love and appreciation they deserve, and I hope they will always, always remember that they changed and saved a life. Teachers make such an incredible impact and they deserve to be thanked a thousand times. ❀

I feel this on a whole other level. In my junior year I was uprooted from my home town to a new town. Both my parents had passed away and I was put into a new school with no familiar faces. I had 1 teacher that asked me to hang after class and talked to me because she knew I wasn’t in a good mental space. We got to talking and she literally saved my life, I had no drive to wake up everyday, and she helped. 12 years later we still text and keep each other posted on our life events. Teachers really are unsung heroes.

We had a couple of teachers like that. One was our biology teacher - incredibly sarcastic and "I just want you to know biology" guy. He didn't have favorites but he also didn't disadvantage anyone - he treated everybody fairly and equally. Because of him, the whole class managed to get accepted to med schools (we were a medical-oriented class) with high grades. Some teachers are just out of this world

i regularly try to send my teachers emails towards the end of the year, regardless if i truly participated in their class. the fact that they taught me math well or was the only class i could go to mid day means a lot to me. even the fact that they not only learned my name so fast but say hi to me when i see them in the hallway is enough; especially as a student who started off freshmen year with the notion that i’d be alone in this new school with no one. i’m in the 11th grade now and i’m happy that these teachers proved me wrong. in school, teachers are the first people that will recognize your potential and then help you expand it. it’s one of the reasons i myself want to be a teacher. we need to thank them more, they do alot for us.
