Women's skating has been a thing since forever. It never was ignored in skateboarding. Nor did sponsors ignore it. Thing is... if their skating is nowhere near on the same level, it will simply be less interesting to watch. It used to be better when it was all about vert skating in the 90s. And no, we still don't see women do the same technical tricks in pro competitions quite yet. Maybe someday. Honestly, people should invest in what attracts eyes. A lot of sponsored female skateboarders are sponsored mainly for their looks and marketability. Not for their skateboarding skills (unfortunately?). I'm looking at all those Instagram skateboarders. Nothing wrong with that at all. But it's a different community. I would say the Olympics had almost no impact on skateboarding whatsoever. No one was blown away by the tricks done or the winners taking the gold there. It did nothing particularly new for skateboarding. And it certainly didn't sell a crazy amount of skateboards either, because viewership wasn't that high. It was hidden behind a paywall, because of course it was. And the poor camera work ruined most of it. This faux perception of how it enabled women to skate on a main world stage is also laughably inaccurate. And yes, even amongst men only the happy few make a good living with skateboarding anyway. So again, what really changed there?

the fact that there is no flat ground game of skate competition is pretty infuriating. it's the simplest, most pure form of a skate contest that leaves the least room for error, as it is not a "judged" contest, but objectively refereed. having all the top pros be able to take a shot at a bracket with berrics rules and a best of 3 format in the finals, man that would really be the dream. and why would they not just work with the SLS team to develop the street olympics format??? yeah let's get the camp woodward guy and not the people who are literally the only promoters to ever figure out how to properly run a skate contest fit for public consumption
Coming back here post 2024 finals. Happy to see Skateboarding thriving in the olympics. The women (Young Teens) division has such promise for its future. For them to be on such a grand stage will create amazing opportunities for them for years to come. Get the homies paid! Also they need to add in skate events that are clear cut winners. High Ollie, long ollie, hippie jump, I think that would be fun to watch one more event outside of park and street.
Hey Dumb, while you were researching this, did you happen to come across examples of corruption elsewhere within the olympics? As a skater I enjoyed your deep dive into Olympic Skateboarding, but as a long time olympics hater I have to tell you it's actually the same but worse and more entrenched for every other sport. Like things you can't say on CZcams! I think our place is to skate these things to dust, not participate. The organization itself exists for elected officials to dump money into their companies, in extreme cases literally bulldozing communities so they can build hotels- or for example ski facilities. Infrastructure that they will privatize as an official and later have ownership in (or in the case of Brazil leave stadiums to rot once the construction money is in.) You can't bring the spirit of skateboarding to the Olympics because the entirety of it is scheming, schmoozing and collusion to defraud the public.
I was always on board with the idea of skateboarding in the olympics. But seeing how poorly everything is executed, the slime balls who run this and could'nt be further from the "essence" of skating and the judging, i think it's already time to take it out and see it as a failed experiment.
Really happy to see skating in the Olympics but I fear for the potential bureaucracy and regulations they’ll out in it. I’m worried that worldskate may want to introduce regulations on gear and only allow for world skate certified equipment which could be used to drop brands and athletes. I’m hopeful but I see a lot of bad people trying to corner a market 😊
This corporate buying out of cool things and ruining them is nothing new but I am shocked to see it get so far in skateboarding. I honestly (and incorrectly) thought Nike would be laughed out of producing skate shoes by now. I doubt they even make money directly from selling skate shoes but just are piggybacking on the coolness of skateboarding as a way to promote the brand to rubes buying sweatshop plastic for way too many dollars. The Olympics is just another corporate brand. Skating will have it's corporate skaters riding for these brands but the real cool side of skateboarding will never be seen under the linked rings. The term “skateboarding” is broad and and ambiguous, like the term “music”. There are many disciplines that fall under these umbrella terms, and Olympic skateboarding is maybe analogous to pop music. The Olympics has decided that its monetarily worth brining in pop skating to engage the younger viewers.

I personally enjoy watching all the World Skate contents. If it results in more skateparks, which is what I primarily skate, even better. I could care less if I see corporate logos on quarter pipes.

The real MVP as always. I'd love to see a vid on Canada skate, I think there would be a lot of dirt to dig up, especially in the realm of Taz and CJ's. ESPECIALLY in the realm of skaters getting paid. For example: the last event at Taz for Canadian Olympic qualifiers, Bell Canada, one of three major companies Canada's telecom oligopoly, had the whole park painted in their colors with branding and tapestries all over the damn place. I do not have the detailes and don't take this as fact, but the prize pool for street was only something like $4000 total - split for men's and women's (1st 1500, 2nd 1000, 3rd 500) and by my estimate, they paid much more in labour, materials, and paint to appease Bell than they did pay out athletes. Absolute BS - I've seen many a local contest pay out more. Like Holy Fkn S, Bell, you got the rest of Canada over the knee - dish out some real money for these kids travelling across the very wide nation. $500 for third is a farce.

Could you provide examples of this 1% actually making money from the Olympics? Like I could see Gary Ream seeing Olympic skating as potentially bringing in more kids (and pushy parents) to Woodward camps, but has that actually happened? I have my doubts that Olympics skateboarding has actually been a pay day for anyone other than the skaters themselves via sponsorship deals (although I'm sure Jagger Snr is benefitting from his son's success). Also what about agents? How many of the top skaters have agents, and what sort of slice do they take from these deals?
Skateboarding is not a sport. It being in the Kooklympics is a disgrace. It’s celebrated inside that venue, but you try and grind some ledges outside the venue and security would show right the fk up. It’s hypocrisy at its finest.
