Many parks do this which furthers the no excuses point. It’s not an amount CP wants to throw away that they’d collect from lockers but is it really worth busting people’s balls over. Many many many family’s will get upset over this. Gen X hates and can’t handle tiny inconveniences like getting screwed paying for a locker. No generation likes it but the people primarily brining their kids are Gen X and millennials who are gonna post on Facebook about it 🤷‍♂️

I don't know how much notice they had, but I believe they need to prioritize installing small, free lockers outside the entrance ASAP, ideally before Memorial day. You can easily make the larger lockers free for two hours during the slow season in May, then have smaller lockers ready to go in a month or two. And if you mention this in your press release, you also prevent a lot of the backlash.

The "we didn't always have cellphones" argument only goes so far. People rode coasters with their keys in their pockets forever. And some people carried (and still carry) a lot of keys, let alone other items.
My point is that cellphones haven't presented a brand new problem for theme parks to confront. Smart phones do because peope like to actually take them out on rides. And that's a fair point.
Personally, I think zippered pockets should be exempted from all of these rules. A shoe that is tied is more likely to come off a foot than a zipper would be to open up as a consequence of coaster forces. Heck, some blouses and girl's top are more likely to simply fly off during a ride if the riders hands were up than for coaster forces to somehow unzip a zipper.

    • @zacg_
      @zacg_ Před 26 dny +1

@@dteitsma I've seen this argument a lot (including in these replies) but I don't think that really explains it. This video isn't about general "no lose article" policies that we see on virtually every coaster. This is about metal detectors being used to ensure no one has any articles in their pockets. There are plenty of coasters where they prohibit you from having a cellphone out during a ride. Even plenty of inverted coasters, flyers, 4D coasters and spinning coasters that are the most high risk. Most of these across the country don't require you to go through a metal detector. Which means an obnoxious rider could pull their phone out during the ride in defiance of the policy. But they aren't forcing everyone else to buy a locker just because an idiot thinks they're above the rules.
TT2 is a high profile coaster and I'm sure the trial lawyers are going to be watching it closely. So these kind of policies exist not because they are strictly necessary. They exist because it will look especially bad if there is another injury and Cedar Point can be blamed in any way.
If policies about not taking cellphones out mid ride were the actual reason for metal detectors in queue lines then virtually every coaster (or at least semi- thrilling coaster) would have metal detectors in the queues. But they don't.

You cannot compare a park like Cedar Point to Universal when it come to offering "free" lockers.
Cedar Point along with most of the Cedar Fair chain focuses on selling season passes over daily tickets. those passes are normally paid for after 2-3 park days. At that point the pass is not longer a source of profit.
A park like Universal on the other hand sells mostly Daily Tickets. a 3 day ticket costs double to what a Cedar Point pass cost. A park like Cedar Point has to look for other was to make income. You want new rides and coaster in the future? you want them to pay their employees higher wages? they are going to charge for things like lockers. Cedar Point literally has it set up that you could pay the same price as a 3 day ticket to Universal ($285) , and it will get you entry into the park every day of the season and Halloweekends, along with unlimited drinks all year and 2 meals a day. A lot of it boils down to insurance premiums and liability. After such a high profile incident in 2021, a lot of parks and manufacturers like Zamperla would rather erase ANY chance of something bad happening. While the incident wasn't due to a guest's loose articles, it costs less to take an overly cautious approach. It's also about PR for Zamperla. If something were to go wrong, even if it wasn't their fault, they would want to be able to say their guidelines recommended no loose articles. It's possible the leaked video of the seat piece flying off the ride made them extra cautious.
Zamperla is extremely cautious when it comes to PR. When a knockoff Disk-O ride had a deadly malfunction in India, they went out of their way to inform the public that the ride was a "forgery" and not one of their products.
Like this video says, it's all about finding a balance between satisfying lawyers/insurance companies and satisfying your customers. This is made even harder by last minute changes.

So I got to ride this twice at a preview event this week (supposed to be one per person, but my wife couldn't ride, and by law I had to use her pass). On the locker situation - from where the lockers are, it's about an hour to the station, barring breakdowns, puke cleanup, and such. Dispatches were consistently about 1:30, which at 20 riders per train puts it at 800 riders an hour. There were two moderate delays while I was there, about 15 minutes each. When the line is moving, it moves pretty good. I didn't need a locker thanks to my wife, but from what I could see it didn't look like there were a ton there. Maybe there will be enough, I don't know. But on a busy day I could see them all being taken.
For where they could put a Steel Vengeance type free locker bank in the line - I'm really not sure. There are places you could theoretically put it, but getting a path back to them for those exiting the ride could be tricky. It's going to be possible with some planning, but it's not going to be a quick fix. I would still anticipate over the offseason they'll make it happen, somehow.
For the ride itself? I thought it was a significant upgrade. Rode in the next-to-last row first, and the front seat second. Both were amazing, and I thought both were far better than their TTD equivalents. I would've been happy liking it as much as the original, but it wasn't really even close.

Like, what would you need on your body in a roller coaster line, realistically? Your car keys? You're not driving...You need your wallet? There's nothing to buy in line...save for the occasional vending machine which almost certainly takes cash...You're thirsty? Great bring a bottle of water and throw it out before you board. In this day and age, there should be free loose article lockers in the queue for every major ride regardless of that ride's policy, as a service to guests who want a secure place to deposit their phones, etc. before boarding. Platform bins aren't secure and ride operators can't be expected to prevent theft. I suspect most people would happily leave their loose articles if they knew they were secure and weren't being charged extra for it. Even if CP wasn't planning such a strict policy, they should have incorporated lockers into the queue as a matter of course.

I totally expected metal detectors, but I also totally expected the free lockers like with SV. I would be shocked if the park actually didn't see this coming. The line for this ride is going to be insane. I don't know how they'll have enough lockers to handle 2+ hours worth of people. For me, I'm not planning to go to the park this year anyway, and probably not next year. Cedar Point has become such a pain to visit. I'd rather go to the Kings parks. By the time I get back to CP, I'm hoping that they'll have the free lockers in place, and that TT2's average wait time will have dropped down to 4 hours.

Here’s my hot take on the no loose articles as someone who used to sit out top thrill dragster while the rest of the family rode it becauseI was the chicken.
While my family was in line I was “old enough” to wonder the park on my own. And by old enough I mean the first time my parents didn’t know I wondered away from the bleachers to marathon witch’s wheel. The second time I was old enough to do what I wanted. But my dad gave me my mom’s phone in case something happened while I was waiting for them. And they would be gone for hours cause the ride would break down. It was the safest way to allow my family to ride while still letting me do what I want.
Now a system like that couldn’t happen. Like yeah my dad could put the phone in a locker and contact me afterwards, but let’s say I fell or needed help how would I contact them? In same ways makes it less family friendly or at least less chicken friendly. Does that make sense?
I d get the need to keep phones off the rides. I literally yelled at my sister for this cause tried to take photos on Grizzly at CGA and it pissed me off. But do what Steel Vengeance or Twisted Timbers does and put the small lockers in the que near the loading area.

This attraction is literally the "Son of Beast" situation, but my concern is the metal detectors when entering the area (that is going to be a pain in the butt considering we have metal detectors at every park entrance, and now have to waste money and people's time going through the metal detector's gates yet again every time they go through the Top Thrill area. Personally, My ride attraction idea back in 2012 named "The black hole time machine" would have included 10 trains (each of them being different trains) to give people different experiences of riding the coaster that way, followed by launching off alongside Top Thrill Dragster, then heading into a black industrial building, a reference to both Skull Mountain at Six Flags Great Adventure and the defunct Disaster Transport/Avalanche ride at Cedar Point from 1985 up until 2011/2012, in pitch black darkness. Followed by another braking and launching spot to go all over the park, then another spot where it breaks and launches again, but going up nearly a 300 foot tall loop next to Millennium Force, with the final one having the tallest, steepest part of it all, a coaster track height of 600 feet into the air, similar to Top Thrill Dragster, and then coming back to the station next to cedar point, with the station built above Top Thrill Dragster's station and such. Maybe if it were a medical device, but not for personal use. Like my wife's phone is also the display for her CGM, and controls her insulin pump. That's allowed.

I walk around amusement parks all the time in flip-flops. In fact, I've purposely bought a pair that is super comfortable for this purpose. I only wear them at amusement parks and no other time. Also, being a runner, introduces you to the world of awesome footwear. There are these great flip-flops called Archies which have to be some of the most comfortable things I've ever worn

Sorry, but the excuse of this being a last minute change to safety requirements is highly doubtful. As you mentioned, they went through the growing pains with SteVe, and with repeated occurrence of people getting whacked by cell phones on standard coasters, the idea of this one being more of a risk seems like common sense. Very poor planning on their part. I also noticed no comments on the Cedar Point press releases of the safety info regarding hats and ballcaps. You are allowed to bring these through on SteVe but have to put it down your shirt at train loading. I emailed CP and got a response that hats will also not be allowed past the TT2 entrance. You know, because if a ballcap flew out of your shirt and hit someone in the face, it might bend a whisker. Oh, and the time you paid for a locker at SteVe was because the free ones were down for a couple of weeks. And while they are a bit clunky at times, they are free and you don't have to strip yourself of all loose objects until you are about to head up to the loading area.

@@AirtimeThrills I hope to avoid the 3 hour queue, as I'm an all-season fast lane holder. I'm in my mid-50s and my days of waiting 2-3 hours for anything are behind me. But to be on the safe side, I load my bald head with sunblock before I head to the park. I am looking forward to trying this ride, and hope the up time is far better than the extremely unreliable Dragster.

@@AirtimeThrills Ah, ok. The free lockers were down for a couple of weeks last year and people were up in arms about being pushed to the pay lockers prior to the entrance. While I just dealt with it since I knew it was temporary, the issue was there weren't enough lockers and you either had to stand and wait until a group came off the ride and released their lockers, or you left and came back later and hoped for an available locker to use. I don't recall how many lockers are outside of the TT2 area, or if they have installed more for this issue, but it will increase people's upset if they run out of available lockers at this location.

It's whatever if we can't bring our stuff on the ride with us but the lockers need to be at the front of the line not before you get in it. I ride a lot of stuff by myself and it's such a freakin drag to be sitting there for 2 hours with nothing to do but wait.

UK theme parks have free luggage storage on almost all their coasters. There is no reason to charge for lockers except as a money-grubbing scheme. And when im paying that much for theme park tickets, parking, and possibly food/drink, there is no way I'm prepared to pay for lockers or storage too.

That's something I brought up last year when this coaster was introduced. One person mentioned it may not happen because the launch may be faster the second time than before, but I also do wonder if the coaster could balance itself just right to get stuck at the top of the arch nearly 425 feet in the air as well.
