And yet he was the player of the game and the MVP of the tournament. I recall Hull saying in a documentary, that in the Canada Cup, "Orr was better was on one leg then the rest of us on two."
I remember watching this game with my Dad on a Saturday night. I was 14 years old and recall this was an important and hard fought victory for Team Canada in the tournament. Outstanding poke check save by Rogie Vachon in the third period. Bernie Pascal did an absolutely awesome job of providing excellent play by play throughout Canada Cup 76.
Orr with the great Clarke-Barber-Leach line, then Esposito with Hull, then Orr and Robinson, then Orr and Potvin, then Perreault-Hull-Lafleur, then Sittler-Shutt-McDonald, etc, etc. This team was my dream team! Orr winning the MVP trophy atb the end of the tournament (in what would turn out to be his swan song) was the icing on the cake.
The greatest ever, and I am a 56 year old Chicago Black Hawk fan. He changed the game forever, Was the fastest skater, stick handler, penalty killer. If he wanted to keep the puck, he could for as long as he wanted. If there is a better all around hockey player in the future, I hope I get to see him in my lifetime. Too bad, bad knee's cut short his career.
Orr 4-ever! This is my all-time favourite line-up with some of my favourite players: Clarke, Leach, Lafleur, Perreault, Potvin. Orr was the icing on the cake. I was so glad he was healthy enough to play in this tournament.
i honestly feel that this was the greatest team Canada has ever put together. Yes Bobby Orr was in pain but he still was the best D man out there. He was no where near the player he was 3 years earlier [ half speed]. Gil Perrealt , Guy lafleur, Bobby Hull , Dionne, Gainey , Sittler and so on.......... . my favourite team off all time !!!!!
I think it's a toss-up with the 87 team where they had Gretzky, Lemieux, Coffey, Messier and Bourke all in their prime. I saw this game live plus a few others and that 76 team is loaded with All-Stars.
wow surprise. this game looked fast, even back in 76. i think today's games the speed is enhanced by players getting away with more and the equipment making people think they are invincible so there is just all out bodies flying which is actually more dangerous.
I've rented a DVD box-set of that tournament. It was great to watch those games that i've just heard about it besause i was to young then. I'm a proud canadian. But frankly, a few canadian players showed so little sportmanship. In fact it was kind of shameful the way they acted: high stick, slashing, intimidation...well Bill Barber acted like a real goon...a real animal!
Смотрел урывками, в это время попал в госпиталь и только сейчас могу нормально смотреть.. В то время еще Афгана не было, в то время была Эфиопия с ее желтухой
Not to mention that every time he had the puck in that game, he made somthing happen, look what he did defensively against Maltsev, tried to do the toe drag on him, failed and took another player out while on one knee! Idk why is game isn't special in the eyes of history cause the trio of Kharlamov, Petrov and Boris weren't there? It was a great game to watch.
Commentators are far better, the game is better, the audience is better. Everything is better than today. I might watch some modern NHL just to find out it sucks.
@lebourru02 the big difference is the teqnique - there is a part of the game that is "beautiful" and sadly that's very rare with the canadian sort of game. Look at this game - the canadians is skating around like dogs and misses a lots of shots and operates with weak puck-handling.
@bloodwitch0789 You also forgot to mention that since NHL-IOC agreement Canada made it only in america, Losing to europeans (Russia as well) both in Torino and american military base Nagano. Apart from WC (which I also consider to be useless), NHL refuse their members to play at 2014 olympics, And just when we proposed Canada to commemorate 1972 series with the new one in 2012 you started your shit about calendar and injuries and poor Carolina Hurricanes at St. Petersburg.
No. That was the NHL commissioner and not Hockey Canada. I'm sure most hockey fans would have loved another 8 Game series ... but in all honesty, it has lost its allure with the collapse of the Soviet Union and with so many Eastern European players migrating to the NHL.
@pistolpete111 I see. But, i repeat i'm a proud canadian and i find european hockey on bigger ice surgace boring. On the unsportsmanlike conduct of some canadians hockey players. I agree it was the cold war then so there was a lot of pressure. But the soviets didnt act like bums ?
its to bad orr was hurt in 72 and they didnt let hull play because he was in the wha. if those two did play the summit series would have be an 8-0 series win for canada
7.02 amazing footage of pro NHL embellishment and kick to the groin. Soviets have to learn that before those games. And those people call soviets dirty.
Ich suche cccp Siege und bekomme stattdessen auf youtube die sehr wenigen canadasiege reingedrückt!!! Die SBORNAJA waren mit Abstand die Besten, NICHT die Kanadier oder sonst jemand...
I have watched a few of these games that Tretiak did not play and Canada won and people complained "it he played they would never beat the soviets". Well here it is he played and LOST.
@@Andyvas375 and the team was transitioning to Viktor Tikhonov's era and the rise of the KLM unit with Fetisov etc. Besides, in 1976, Kharlamov couldn't play in the Canada Cup due to his first car accident and his injuries. So, it seems the Soviets decided to keep his line off the roster.

This was by far THE BEST hockey team ever assembled! (Canada). I quit my job at Ft. Mac to watch this series.
Absolutely and Orr wasnt anywhere near healthy either , that summit series in 72 would have been way more in Canada's favor had Orr played in that .

Mario Lemieux.
Incredible to see some of the names on the ice for Canada.

@Jim Dandy That '81 team was stacked.

I always thought the Soviets should have been allowed to challenge for the Stanley Cup. Tretiak perhaps the best goalie of all time.
+Budd Ha He had a difficult time with Hull though, even in Hull's declining years.

we start with 6 habs on da ice...yeah baby.6 from same team.
that's a good point.

Christ,......Bill Barber flopping around like a fish out of water....
It was cause Kharlamov got into a car accident and that dismantled almost their whole lineup.

That was in response to a stick blade in the face.
Mark Thomas lol
The Russians today could learn a thing or 2 from their guy's then. They kept the Canadians blades sharp with this kind of _X_
Rogie, Rogie, Rogie!
agreed. orr was just a marvel to watch
just like kharlamov i might add

Tretiak was superb but far from perfect. He seem especially to have a lot of trouble against Hull.
Man, it's a B Soviet team(USSR-2). No first 2 lines. Mikhailov-Petrov-Kharlamov, Yakushev-Shadrin-Anisin aren't play

EXACTLY!!!...
Perreault was always good against the commies.
Perreault was good against Canadians , but a bum against the Russians!
