I was there, 14 of age, with my dad watching the tournament. I still have Sweden’s jersey and the original program. Bought the best pair of skates I ever had in Montreal, CCM Super Tacks.
The true good old days of hockey. I remember going to the library where they would have those nice big colour books with all the players like Dryden, Bobby Clarke, Guy Lafleur, Ian Turnbull, Sittler, Parent, Makita, the Esposito's and so on. Just looking at the pages in awe. There was so much more mystique to the players then. They were like gods.

Thank you for sharing, Mr. VasilenkoK. What a great line for Canada on the faceoff at ~14:14: Esposito, Marcel Dion, Bobby Hull -- backed up by Bobby Orr (in part) on defense.
Börje, you will be remembered FOREVER for the great warrior and hockey player that you were, but more an amazing human being! Thank You so very much for all the memories and all of the inspirations that you gave us all! See You on the other side!
I remember this game from when I was a kid 9 years old. I agree with some of the other commentators that Sweden was outplayed by Canada, but I have to say with great pride that they jerseys the swedes using in this tournament is the most beautiful and cool hockey jersey ever worn.
The Leafs' Salming,Hammerstrom and Kings' Widing paved the way for those early Swedish players: Anders Hedberg,Ulf Nilsson, Kent Nilsson,Willy Lindstrom,Thomas Gradin,Stefan Persson,Mats Naslund,Lars Lindgren,Thomas Jonsson
Big BUT, Doctor Gerry Wilson, Carey Wilson's dad and Colin Wilson's grandfather, went over to Sweden to convince all those Swedish players to basically come at once, and it was his doing that they all came to Winnipeg at the same time. A great time for hockey, and I remember it well, having season tickets for years to the Jet's games back then. Tremendous men, Hull, Nilson and Hedberg, and, perhaps my favorite for years after, Kent Nilson. Dan Labraaten and the late Lars Sjoberg were no slouches still. Reminds me that Labraaten never fought, but was a golden glove boxing champion, as I recall. Interesting times, and great memories! ;-)
MrVasilenkoK, thanks for uploading these videos. When I play hockey, I try to model my play after Borje Salming. Sadly, such videos of him are rare and this is one of the few I have seen. Thanks you so much! I don't suppose you could upload a vid of USA vs Sweden?
Had the fortune of attending this game and a Czechslovakia -Finland blowout (8-0 Czechs) at MLG as a 10 year-old. Sittler had quite the year; a series winner coupled with his 10 point night against the Bruins the previous February.
So sad to see how Orr could hardly skate by then...after so many operations he just had no mobility in his knees and was in pain all the time. Salming often said how Orr was his hero and how he tried to emulate his style when he was young.
Orr's knee was not fine. He couldn't practice and had to stand on the bench alot so the knee wouldn't stiffen up and still led Canada in points and was MVP.
Considering the ton of talent that was on this Canada team (most are Hall of Famers), Sweden played a very competitive game. What's up with the linesmen constantly throwing out the original face off pair in this game. Finally, it is sad to see how deteriated Orr's skating had become during this period. If you watch the video closely, you can see his left knee locking up on him a few times. He must have known he didn't have many games left as a pro...very sad for all of us who loved hockey.
Yes, the stories from Bobby Clarke, Bobby Hull, and the rest of them, saying Orr didn't even practice, hobbled to the rink on one leg, and still performed like that! Truly amazing, man!
E Jomamma-In order to do what he did he had to really love playing the game. I got my love of the game from watching him, as a kid, in amazement. He is quite an interesting guy.
Desoxyn Man ...I was at the game with my dad. We both commented to each other how it was obvious that Orr was obviously playing at a level that was a mere shadow of his level of play when he was at his best. He was obviously playing in pain.

I'm the biggest Orr fan there is, but it was sad watching him, a mere shadow of his former self. I think he only played about 20 or 30 NHL games after this. And he was only 28.
