  • This is a video of my second world war amphibious truck. It was manufactured in 1945 by General Motors Corporation as a vehicle to move men and materials from ship-side to shore. It was designed to swim to shore and without delay, continue up onto land and drive inland. This truck (boat) has been privately owned since 1979.

My late grandfather was a Korean War veteran, who told me he was one of the guys who instructed others on how to use them. I don't know what unit he was with but it was a story that stuck with me because he just kept referring to them as "the ducks".
I had no idea one of them was so close to where I live, let alone a functional one! On my way home from work this morning, I was just thinking about how I'd like to find one and restore it to running condition as a way to connect with him.
Semper Fi, Grandpa. I miss you.

Fun fact. The units who drove these amphibious trucks were sometimes known as the "Quack Corps."
God Bless Your Grandfather and his service to the country.

Sir, you need to locate a 'surf board' for the bow of your machine. I can see the latches are still on your hood, you just need to find one. Sure would help keep the waves off your front deck. Good job on your restoration. Tighten up that cable on the spool, don't forget heavy leather gloves!! Thanks!! Ooooops, later in the vid I see there is a surf board! So now I know you know! Thanks again,

I don't why, for the life of me, a thought of a DUKW entered my head? I was simply watching an unrelated CZcams video and up it popped, So, I'm now pushing 77 years and as a child in the early 50's, I remember being on holiday somewhere here in the UK. We went on a ;pleasure ride' in one at whatever seaside resort we were at. It's one of those memories we take with us 'til we pass. Thank you for sharing.

Good Morning sir hope al is well. I am writing a screen play about smuggling across the Detroit River into Windsor and have included a DUKW as a transport vehicle for one of my heros. I'd really enjoying a conversation with you, if you're available to discuss the possibility of having your vehicle in the Movie... this will be a Canadian Production.
    Thank you in advance.
