I used to see disabled veterans patroling the local grocery store lots, protecting the 'Handi-parking spaces'. They couldn't ticket anyone; however, they were able to take pictures and leave a warning notice informing the selfish-pig of the law and that the authorities may still ticket them.
I had a school-pal that was a medical-transport driver who liked to use her 'Handi-permit' to park for herself. Once she did this while I was her passenger. I begged her to park elsewhere but she refused.
As she walked away, two veterans in wheelchairs rolled toward her...
It was awesome watching her try to make them share her perspective.🤭...
Then, the idiot thought they were merely talking to her, and headed into the store without moving her car.(She said that they never told her to move.😳...🙄WTF did she think they were saying?)
Anyway. The vets kept a tow-truck near by. Her car was gone in 5 minutes and took extra money to get the car back. I think the extra was simply a tax for being such a blatant a-hole.
To this day, she thinks she was treated unfairly.
      Yeah. She's a beaut.🤣

Since I retired, I've taken a part time gig as a delivery driver and let me tell you, sometimes parking is difficult to find. But there is never a reason to take a handicap spot and I never will. Some of my co-workers think I'm silly to walk further by refusing to use one but I would rather walk further because often the users of those spaces can't walk at all.

    • @TrevorMom
      @TrevorMom Před 13 dny +1

You said you've retired, so I hope I'm correct in assuming you're a little older than some drivers. (By the way, please don't read any of this as criticism. I think your post is great. I'm just sharing an idea your post brought to mind.) I'm older too, probably older than you. Looking back, I don't think I actually understood what being in almost constant pain or being weak meant. We all think we're invulnerable when we're young, and we think we always will be. But as we age, we experience first hand what it's like to have something that used to be so simple become almost impossible. I took ballet for years. I couldn't do any of those movements now, and it makes me sad. I know that I'm often grateful when I realize it could be so much worse, and I know that it is worse for the disabled. I also realize that if I live long enough, I could be confined to a wheelchair someday, too. I didn't think that would ever happen when I was young.

I've seen it done. Guy was pulling in and was going to use the only open H/C spot, an Uber Eats driver zips into the spot and takes a food order into the building. The H/C guy yells at him to move his vehicle, Uber guy yells back "Fuck off, I'm only going to be a minute!" and continued on. H/C Guy pulls in behind Uber's car and calls the police. Police show up the see Uber guy yelling at H/C guy and H/C guy yelling back "I'll only be a minute!"

Well this day while there my boss saw a delivery van parked in a disable spot, she called the tow truck and asked the driver if he could remove a van. In Australia they try to help out commercial vehicles by having Loading Zones in and around te city where businesses are receiving deliveries, but you must have a commercial vehicle (truck or van) with signage on in prominent place showing name, address & phone No, of business, and many have time limits from 10-30 minutes depending on what councils believe will be the number of vehicles using & size of load. Large & heavy deliveries must be made on business owners property like loading docks or parking space for trucks.

My wife is a stroke victim since 2022 and we have a handicapped placard to make it easier for me to transport her. I never use it unless she is with me in the car. If I am running an errand and she is going to remain in the car, I will not park in a handicapped spot.
In NJ, you are supposed to remove the placard except when using it to park (it says so right on the placard). I imagine it's because it interferes with seeing the road. But many keep it up on their mirrors all the time. Given handicapped people's already difficult lives, if I were a law officer, I would be loath to issue them a ticket for that. Maybe just a warning of why it's important to remove it when not in use.

In Australia the Permit holder is only about the size of a Playing card and the Permit itself is credit card sized. It is supposed to be on the Left side of the windscreen and held in place by 2 suction cups. I have mine attached to the underside of the interior sun visor so I can flip it into view when I need to use it.The cards display an “Expiry date” which is 6 months for a Temporary card and 5 years for permanent disability. Some seem to leave it in view all the time, which is crazy as the sun fades the card to a stage where it becomes Brown and is not readable.

I broke my leg in 2019 and was confined to a wheelchair for 5 months. I lived alone. People who've never had to do it have no idea how difficult even the easiest things become when you can't stand up or walk. My microwave was out of reach. I couldn't get to my fridge without pulling myself up by a counter edge. I couldn't get my wheelchair anywhere near my toilet. EVERYTHING was more difficult. I had never been willing to park in a handicap space. But now I have such admiration for the disabled. I've had four heart attacks, so I have little energy and don't breathe well. But I haven't requested a handicapped parking permit because I can walk a little way. I bought a telescoping stool so I can sit if I need to. I definitely believe heart patients merit a handicapped space. But for me, personally, I will give up my space to people who can't walk at all, and that can include some heart patients.

Here in Canada our fines are astronomical for Handicapped Parking cheaters. Your spouse, relative or friend cannot drive your car and use the permit. Only the person named on the permit can use an accessible parking space. If you use the permit without the permit holder in the vehicle, you could be fined up to $5,000 and the permit will be seized. Believe me, it cuts down big time on corporate vans, trucks, and cars, as well as people using someone else's permit. If you have a disability and you want to let your adult kids use it so they can get a parking space at the mall, you'll lose your permit, and I'm not sure if you could get another one very easily.

@@johnlaine2654 I think the first offence is $1,500. AND you lose the permit. I'm not sure what the full $5k fine would be for, but that's the way it's written. Possibly for parking in the downtown core? In the suburbs maybe it's the lesser amount, but on downtown streets, overnight maybe it's the larger fine? Sometimes losing the permit would be the biggest problem for grandma, because she'd have to re-apply for another one, and she'd have to explain how she lost it in the first place.

A better solution is for all fines to be at the High end and forget the minor slap on the wrist.I can’t see how a smaller suburban or regional area scale would benefit ,they would just use that as a “ Parking Cost” and happily cop the lower fine. It’s obvious the same attitudes apply the world over and drivers just don’t care as long as they get their parking spot.Immediate Loss of Permit and a suspension of their licence would hurt much more.

If someone researched number of tickets written in Seattle, I bet it would be zero or close to it. Parking enforcement and police are understaffed and full of excuses when contacted about illegal parking. They say oh it’s Sunday or officer discretion to not write a ticket. Also, to get a hold of parking enforcement you have to call the non emergency number and hold times can be 30-45 minutes. So the person you are calling on is long gone by the time you get through to a person.
