    In today's video, I show a real life experience I had of catching multiple drivers illegally parked in disabled parking spots. Illegal parking is a huge problem for the disability community. Please do not park in a disabled parking spot unless you are legally allowed to do so. And always show your placard or have disabled license plates so your car is clearly marked. CLOSED CAPTIONED

    The Love Disabled Life CZcams channel is committed to challenging the stigma of disability that perpetuates the discrimination and marginalization of disabled people. Videos are about aspects of daily life, our history and culture and positive disability identity.
    I'm Jody, the woman behind (and in front of too!) the camera, and I am motivated to advocate for positive disability identity through this CZcams channel, as well as in by blog website and Etsy shop, to provoke new ways of thinking about being disabled. In doing this work, I hope that I can amplify the voices of my community so that they may be better understood and accepted in society. While I acknowledge, as disabled people, we might not like every day (let's face it, some days are hard), we should always love who is living them.

    My mother faces this everyday. Thank you for posting this. People NEED TO UNDERSTAND that those parking spots really do help those who are handicapped. It isn't right
    I was initially going to tell you to lay off of people (or at least approach individually) with expired tags. It's happened quite a bit with my mom before she got her's updated to never having to renew it. People forget a LOT of the time, and cops are just looking for that revenue even if it is just a day over being expired. But five years? Sheeeyittt. Ticket those idiots. Probably not even their card initially anyway.

      Thank you for watching and commenting. Look, I'm not out to make people's life hard. I know licensing and fees are expensive. But when it comes to disabled parking placards, they cost nothing to be in compliance. Once I got a ticket for not having my hang-tag legally displayed. Was I salty about it, sure. But I paid the fine. It was my fault. The law is the law and far too many disabled people have their rights to access infringed on a daily basis. On this day I just had ENOUGH.

    Did you know the placard should not be hanging when the car is being driven. It blocks the drivers view. Also placards will dry out and get brittle and degrade.

    When I was a kid and I sometimes still do is contact the police about cars parked in disable spots without a permit. Just as the police show up I have the person at customer service tell the shoppers that car whatever it is and tag number their window was just broken into out front. The person runs out real fast just as the ticket go's on the window.

    Just to clarify, this video did not show any 'drivers' being caught, but instead only showed vehicles which were apparently in violation.
    That said, such vehicles should be ticketed AND towed away immediately. There are few things in life lower than an able-bodied person who would park illegally in a handicapped spot.

    Over here in the UK it's the cops who are a lot of the problem parking high on the pavement and over lowered wheelchair crossing points normally outside the coffee and doughnut shops . I have actually been trapped inside a coffee shop as the cop car was parked so close to the door I failed to be able to get my wheelchair out . When I tried later to access the cop station to complain I found 5cop cars parked blocking THE PAVEMENT TOTALLY a great way to stop people getting in to complain

    I am not disabled but have family that is and it pisses me off when I find these clowns parked in handicap spots. One lady I confronted after she parked and started to walk away, she said she lost her cellphone in the store and going back in to find it. I said really and that gives you permission to park there with some other words, she did move. Another lady parked in the handicap spot, she was about 30 years old, I walked up to her vehicle and noticed the birth year was for 1933 so I called the police, waited for them and they waited till she came out of the store. First she tried to say her mother was in the store and she was waiting for her, that's when I said to the cop when she pulled in she was by herself. She did get a ticket.

I even had to bring it up to the pastor at church about the abuse, young people using their grandparents hang tag to park in the handicap spots. That seems to be a common abuse the driver has access to a hang tag assigned to someone in their family, so 4 young people get out of a car and they hang the tag and walk in to church.

    I am not handicapped... but people who abuse those designated spots bother me too. You can go in and alert the management because you are handicap... when I have done this as a non handicapped person, they just say they can not do anything about it. It is strange that business property owners by law and regulations have to have a certain amount of designated handicap stops... but they can not or don't want to enforce them. Maybe the business should be given a citation for not having available handicapped parking if non handicap people are using the spot!

Our local grocery store has spaces marked off for golf carts that are very small spaces because there is a large golf retirement community behind the store and a lot of the elderly customers drive golf carts. But people repeatedly park their cars in those spaces since they are to lazy to walk a few feet more from an open spot for cars.

He said, "what, are you a cop or something?" I said, "No, but what you are doing is illegal. Can you please move?" He rolled his eyes and said, "Look lady, I'm sure your life is hard enough, so I'll move." Like he was doing me a big a** favor by obeying the law. I should note, too, sometimes it is scary to confront people. But I will always try to advocate for myself and my community. Thank you for watching and commenting.

I still go to Goodwill, but not that one.

    The reason we have Disable Parking is (parking as close to an entrance as possible) to make it easier for a disable person to enter and leave the premises. So why does some business have disable parking at the end of the building, making it the furthest parking spaces from the entrance? I guess they don't care about their handicap customers.

    • @lovedisabledlife
      @lovedisabledlife  Pƙed 2 lety

      You know, I've often wondered this myself. It's not that I don't think they don't care, I think sometimes it is an issue with how the building is positioned on the lot, etc. There are a lot of rules and regs for easement, water drainage, stuff like that. Additionally, I think businesses (wrongly) assume that if you are using a disabled parking spot you are in a wheelchair (so you aren't walking) so it doesn't matter anyway. This is obviously a wrong assumption. Lots of people with invisible disabilities need access to disabled parking spots, that yes, should be as close to the entrance as possible. Thank you for watching and commenting!

      I've noticed a lot of that in Arkansas, where I live. I currently have about 7-10 minutes of walking/standing time before my legs begin to ache/burn because of bruising/pinching of nerves in my pelvis. At twice that time, I begin to loose feeling in my legs. The really bad placement of reserved parking is usually at restaurants, but there are several strip mall areas without parking of any sort in the areas of the door, including having better than eight inch step-up from the parking area and no ramps for chairs/walkers.

    Would you do better to call law-enforcement yourself and ask them to send a cruiser to ticket those people? Because if you are handicapped, you are entitled to those spaces. I bet that would get an officer there faster. I’m so very sorry people do that. I see it all the time and I actually will say something to them.

    I'm disabled due to COPD and heart problems that reduces the blood flow to my legs (No I'm not fat). I can walk short distances without much problem, but if it's over 200 feet or so my legs start hurting and I limp. If the distance is 100 yards or more I have to sit down until the pain goes away. So, I have a handicap placard, but I only use it if I can't find a parking spot fairly close. I've had people call the cops after seeing me walk a short distance and looking normal. After the cop checks me and finds I'm legal he walks over to the person who reported me and I can see the anger they have over me not getting a ticket. In the beginning I tried to explain my health problems to the complainer, but they didn't want to hear it and flat out called me a liar. So, I don't even bother trying to explain anymore!

    This was too funny to watch. Yes its wrong to park in handicap spaces when you're not disabled. That being said could this lady be any more of a Karen? Getting police involved because she had to walk the extra couple of feet with the guy in the wheel chair? For real? That guy has an uber sticker on his car. You assume these people can just afford an extra ticket over that? Like just confront them peacefully and without getting police involved if you feel that passionate about it. Such a drama queen.

    • @lovedisabledlife
      @lovedisabledlife  Pƙed 2 lety +6

      You said it yourself: It is not only wrong to park in a disabled space without the proper license or hang tag to do so, IT IS ILLEGAL! Are you saying if someone was trying to break into your house you should just calmly ask them to leave? IF I had known who these drivers were, yes I would have talked with them and asked them to move. But I shouldn't have to wait in the parking lot for them to return. Whole Foods is the one who called the police, and if you were there, you would know they did a courtesy warning in the store first. Also, I am ambulatory, but I use a scooter, I was not walking. Hence, why I use the scooter. Lastly, all white women are not Karen's, but if you feel the need to assume, then that is your choice. But I won't apologize for advocating for myself, or my disabled community.

Ya of course whole foods called the cops when some hysterical lady is hounding them down while recording. Its still illegal. Doesn't mean I agree with it. Someone breaking into my house is not on the same level as causing an inconvenience to me. I'm the guy who walks multiple miles every day to go to work and then back home. I've had my own personal struggles in life that are far greater than the average person. This lady is a Karen. (BTW thats a slang term because apparently you didn't get that) and you kinda sound like one too. Suck it up and get over it. People suck.
