Please note, I do FREQUENT collection videos. What you see from a year ago, or tomorrow, or next week MAY NOT BE IN MY COLLECTION ANYMORE!
I hope you found this video helpful! Please like and subscribe!
Hi Gecko Guy! I've done this set up with a conical tupperware container and gotten started with a few waxworm grubs. What do you suggest I do to collect the waxwoms larvae without letting the adult moths get out once they mature? I'm fine with placing a strip of wire mesh for my moths to lay eggs on but I've gotta make certain that they can't get out or else my parents will kill them and then me!
@@michaeladaniel7114 id suggest making a 2 part container where the moths cant get out but they can leg eggs that goes into a separate bin. Kinda like a mealworm breeding rack. Keep in mind the larvae are expert climbers! Hope this helps
Do you have to have honey or like you said can we use potato’s and carrots?
Do I follow the same procedure if I am at pupae stage already?
@@paulb9769 yes
the first tub of wax worms you opened were in the metamorphosis stage and in a few days will be the moth that you want.
Do the moths need food? I have pupas now do I make this mix now?
I find mixing small clumps of bran and honey to work for water. My wax worms were getting stuck and dying in the honey.
Elana F thanks for the tip
Only the strong survive
@@waragainstmyself1159 😂🤌
we use wax worms to catch fish in the winter under the ice... great for sunfish, crappie and perch
good old bran flakes, what a nice cereal box
+Kenna Gee #spongebob
Do you know if they would burrow in that stuff or would they sit on top and eat it. Oh and does having mesh and setting the food up like the way hornworms usualy are work?
I tried to do this a few months ago except I tried sugary cereal and corn syrup, in a kind of drink jug. It killed the waxworms because it started to ferment and they suffocated! Bad me... But I kept the container to see if it was also going to mold or something else. It never did but it didn't smell good either. So about a week ago I aired out the jug overnight and then bought new waxworms and added them to it. Then I attached a paper napkin over the opening and laid it on its side so any more CO2 would dump out thru the napkin. And I have been checking it every once in a while and the waxworms are still alive. So maybe I will have a waxworm colony eventually. And if not then it will still be interesting to try.
do you keep them in the temperature that is recommended on the box of wax worms?
Can they eat just wheat germ without oats & honey? Other moths could lay eggs in that substrate like meal moths (a real pest) or brown house moth, both love infesting cereal and grains
there was about 60 good ones in there. when you see cocoons then you know moths are on the way. you can mess with the mix for a while but when you see cocoons get that tissue paper in there immediately. dont open it when you have moths
Hi there, I was just wondering if the waxworms and the mealworms are really smelly like it is to keep crickets. Right now I have dubias and they don't really smell! :D
Whats the tissue paper for? I got wax paper in my jug right now. I just started this about two days ago, so should I see the cocoons in about 3 weeks?
if theyre turning into cocoons then everything is right. if they arent, double check your temperatures. its normal to have a few die off
I keep them in room temp most the time, but when its hot out i take them outside. We had a thunderstorm today so I couldn't get them into the heat. But i did some research and it was normal to have them turn brown like that. Its like the first stage they are in b4 turning into moths. They say 2 weeks i should have moths
That container in the video is where you leave the moths?? I just want to get a good setup for the waxworms. Do I need to put any sticks for something inside the container for the moths to breed?
You dont really need anything for these guys the moths will do their thing for breeding
great video and very helpful
and easy
I would stick with potatoes, carrots, and other mold resistant fruits and vegetables. It will give better nutrition to your insects. Also, when you go to feed your reptiles, you can simply use a sifter to collect them. Just grind your substrate into a fine substance or use one that is already at this state. Personally, I use corn meal, potatoes, carrots and occasionally apples and squash, works great.
i prefer carrots. they tend to mold less quickly
Yes carrots are great. It may seem funny, but I provide variety for my insects. I believe in variety in diet for reptiles as well as their food. My animals seem to do well on it and my customers who purchase my insects haven't complained. I'm sure there's no wrong way to do it, just preferences. Keep it up!
Carrots for waxworms?
Thank you so much video very helpful
so you put the honey on top of the wax worm pile you just threw in and then you mixed it up . are the wax worms now stuck to the bran and unable to move or eat and did you kill them when you squeezed the handful of sawdust cereal mix?????
they were absolutely fine and i had a high yield of moths followed by waxworms
@@GeckoGuy your full of it. You killed the shit out of those worms. You coated them with honey and mixed them into the mess. They're soft bodies would never hold up to that even if it could they wouldn't be able to breathe or move. Liar.
@@brerrabbit4265 lol
ALL OF GECKO GUYS VIDEOS ARE AMAZING
Alex Valerdi Juarez SO ARE YOUR COMMENTS :)
0:50 I died😂😂😂 i don't mean to be rude, it was just kinda the way you were like "alright! So.... Oh well that sucks" I'm sorry XD
Lps_sara100 haha yup
Yes! Me too! "That sucks" lol. Good thing for the back up container.
How many worms were in the container? I used abour 34 wax worms, so when should I start seeing the moths? N i have my worms kept in an air tight container. Am I allowed to open it at all and mess with the mix? Like if i think it needs more honey
LOL yes pupae, I'm new at the bug breeding business. I have alot of pupae. Thanks for the info :)
That dude just poured honey all over his worms them just smashed them all together 👍
I have had lots of left over wax worms since I have been doing this for awhile and the ones my packman frog doesn't eat go to waste. I was wondering if someone could tell me how to prepare them for shipping an if u can I would appreciate it.
RABID CAT
Keep the cool
i think you mean pupae. larva are the worm state. you can leave the pupae in the container and i recommend that you buy more waxworms and put them in a separate tank. that way you wont possibly damage the new potential moths.
The honey will help keep down mold.
Do you have to mix up the honey. Abd could you use oatmeal?
L Zimm. its recommended to mix it up otherwise youll have a big glob of it that the waxies will drown in and otherwise youll have a big blob that will mold and you can for sure use oats. the more stuff you use the better
Do geckos eat the moths too? And when moths are hatched how can I harvest the worms without the moths getting out or flying away?
So the reason honey doesn't go bad is the lack of moisture it actually has I don't think it is providing any water
something you probably havnt heard of I make ant colonys starting with a single queen ant and they eat ALOT so I need to know this do u need glycerin if not what do u do because I heard of you have to use glycerin to keep it moist I have tried in the past but failed without glycerin does being in winter have anything to do with them does it kill them
thanks for sharing
that doesn't answer the question
Gaige Daughtrey ive never bred ants before so i wouldnt know. you can probably use water gel crystals. i use them for mealworms and superworms
ok thank you
youre welcome
I like how you just throw it all in there lol no big deal XD
My wax worms r starting to turn brown. Like burnt roasted brown. N they have like a hard outter layer What's that mean?
so unlike meal worms these guys can be a 1 containers deal? don't need to separate until after the moths die off? is that right?
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO seperate the moths and worms
Bit late but I breed meal worms in one container.
Lol he was so chill with all those dead worms
Tara Cole lol yeah but man do they smell
what about liquid glycerin as a water source? I seem to remember I read it somewhere... thanks
+Amber Petry i have heard of that too and you can use that too but i chose not to since i couldnt find it locally
ok great thanks. I picked up a bottle somewhere so I figured it'd beless messy that honey, which I have that also
I think you can add the glycerin to the honey to help keep it moist. Pricey stuff for a small bottle. I got it in the cake decorating section of Michael's.
I’m keeping mine in crushed up rice crispys will this be okay!!??
Did it work?
Top vid super info
I know nothing about wax worms but I have a bearded dragon and I ordered dubia roaches and I think I got bonus wax worms what should I do with them I really don't want to feed them off should I try to breed them or can I let them go? Are they invasive???
+MoPro Uploads i wouldnt let them go. just freeze them or toss them in the trash
your bearded dragon can just eat them right ?
+DutchReptiles yes, they just have trouble digesting meal worms.
If you don't want the ones you got then why the hell are you gonna breed more? Just feed them to beardy.
They are invasive and attack bee keepers' hives. They eat the beeswax.
could you not use bug grub.
They didn't die from the honey being all over them?? I jus bought 100 of them. Non of them are moving. Even being out of the fridge for 30 min. R they dead??? I feel stupid asking!
maybe you got a bad batch..
why did you get the first pack of worms without looking at them?
I’m getting really tired of buying worms for my beardie boy and half of them being dead when I get home to check them out. so I’m gonna start trying to keep my own, that is if my fat boy can not eat all of them! lol
I know how you feel. i check mine bef0re leaving the store
I keep mine and my meal worms in soil instead of wood chips or saw dust.
Won't it suffocate the wax worms if you dump honey straight on them?
Never had an issue
this thing you call honey is just syrup lmao
real honey cristalises
Acacia honey doesn't.
Dude ...are you kidding?? You'd have to be!! Waxworms are so fragile, it blows my mind that anyone would put the honey on top of them and mash it up... I mean seriously ... 🤯 😳
Never had an issue
How long does it take from Larva to moth?
Oversize Seal never really kept track but id say the whole process tales about a month to yield more worms
Do you think superworms would like honey?
they dont smell at all. BUT dead waxworms smell worse than death itself. i always wear gloves when removing dead waxworms from my enclosure. they dead waxworms smear on your hands easily
Hay can any one tell me where i can get the mesh
Cl animal Man I'd go to Home Depot they use it to cover windows and stufd
Yes. It is window screen replacement. Hardware stores or Walmart hardware section has it. It comes in a roll.
Housewares section of your local thrift store is a good place to look or better yet (if you're container is under 12" in diameter) head to the dollar store and buy a screened splatter guard cover from the cooking utensils section...
you just save me so many dollars
gladi could help
Hey can you feed the beetles to a gecko?
i wouldnt recommend it
Will the moths fly everywhere if I open the lid my parents aren't ideal with them around the house?
+Jack and Reptiles yes they will get everywhere
Ok then I guess I'll just buy them thx
Do you ever have to clean the cage?
only for a little maintenance. i recommend wearing rubber disposable gloves to remove the dead waxworms. that smell is unbearable. but jjust keep bottles of cheap honey around as well and bran and oats
can you substitute corn syrup for honey?
yes. thats what i use actually.
Gecko Guy OMG thank you! Honey is soooo expensive and corn syrup is so cheap.
stephencarlsbad eh i get the cheapest thing of honey i can find
Won't the honey on the worms poison the reptile
no
Where do you get the worms
Brady Hasenjaeger the store
What store
Brady Hasenjaeger use your brain. you can get them at a bait store, walmart, petco, petsmart, wherever.
Ok
+Gecko Guy some guys like it spoon fed to them, eh Gecko Guy?
My wax worms won't move is that normal?!
That doesn't seem normal
@@GeckoGuy My beardie is highly addicated to treats to eat any thing else and advice XD
@@DaneGamez dont feed treats as often. Maybe a once or twice a month thing.
@@GeckoGuy Ok thank you
can you use walnuts
+Omar's reptiles i dont think so
Gecko Guy oh okay I will look it up
nice video
+Rokozeno Terhukhano thank uyou
what if I don't use bran flakes
Jerin Love10 you can use oats
Don't you need a place for the moths to lay eggs?
Babys will get right out of that screen
Never had an issue
@@GeckoGuy how would you know?
@@fishingwithhoffman7365 because i actually have done testing and have results
this is where the game changes for me...I have YET to actually breed these...don't know what the problem is. Thank Goodness my reptiles are all fat so I don't really need them. But it would still be nice to get it done at least once, ya know? ;-
Can they really eat plastic?
Not in my experience
OK thx
Them waxworms are dead bruh XD
Not at all. They pupated and hatched into moths and i got baby waxworms from it
Dude, you are supposed too set up before putting your worms in, now that thou crushed them all, i wouldn't use honey, just use potatoes, and carrots for water, how lazy can you be for wax worms, they do all the work
Never had any issues
Do you mean just put carot, potato in box? Nothing eles? What did you use for substrate?
Won't they drown in honey?
never had an issue
Carlos Vidrios certain pet stores do the same thing and you can see clumps when you buy wax worms
I would have just token off the top of the honey bottle
everyone has their ways of doing things
Gecko Guy yeah
Gecko Guy By the way can I use this insted of bran?

Canine hunter i dont see why not the skys the limit
Gecko Guy cool
and of course you are going to need your wax worms ...........................................that sucks.
Wtf
Don't listen to your parents do what makes you happy.
very true
That's terrible, juvenile advice
your parents are some of the *few* people who will *always* have your best interests at heart
not always jeff
If hes living with his parents.. ya kinda gotta compromise.. its their house.. but if you are on your own and support yourself FULLY. then go for it!
Hay can any one tell me where i can get the mesh
pretty much any hardware store
Thanks
