  • On the surface, a race looks like a bunch of runners stepping to the line to see who is the fastest, but inside the mind of every racer, they’re taking stock of the skills and tendencies of every other competitor in the race to strategize how to best play The Game... and every time they step to the line, The game is different.
Before Galen Rupp turned his attention to the roads, he made his living on the track as one of the world's best 10,000m runners- possessing the American Record of 26:44 and the Olympic Silver from London 2012.
At the 2021 Portland Track Festival, he returned to the track for 25 laps amidst his build-up to the Tokyo Marathon. RJ McNichols captured the event beautifully from Rupp's perspective, taking us inside the mind of the American Record holder.

I appreciate and admire Rupp being private throughout his career. However, I do think it has made him an easy target for people to dislike him and make judgements. From the very little we see, he's a humble and incredible guy who outworks everybody. And there is no way Mike Smith would have taken him on if he was doping.

AlSal and Galen were a great team going back to his HS days but AlSal came across as the mouthpiece. I dunno, maybe he thought he was protecting Galen but I think American distance running would've benefited to hear more of him in his own words like we did with Hall and Centro, for example. Exposure is good. Look at stars from other sports like the NBA, Tennis or soccer.
