What if Italy joined the Central Powers?

  • Many claim that had Italy remained in the Central Powers, the faction could have been victorious over the Entente. This statement has some validity, as it would most likely result in a quick victory, so Russia would still capitulate, and the United States wouldn’t join the war.
This is not to say that Italy is somehow going to do too much, I expect them to sit on the mountainous frontline with France. Even this is a nice distraction, Italy has colonies, so the Entente needs to commit more resources elsewhere.

@@flavius5722 Well, it's kinda complex. I'm from these territories, at the old border between kingdom of Italy and Austrian empire. It's true that they weren't particularly rich but 1) they had actually a lot of Italians 2) They had some rich port metropolis, like Fiume and Trieste 3) They were strategically important to reach the alps and defend if Austria would attack Italy in the future (before, the border was on the hills of Friuli and Veneto, really difficult to defend). Savoy and Nice were richer but, also, ceded to France in good faith for their help in creating Italy. There wasn't any rightful reason to reclaim them. Corsica wasn't rich nor particularly useful, and it's still an issue for France today. What Italy wanted from France was Tunisia, it was settled by Italians who thought they were playing the long game and then swooped quickly by France, Italy wasn't happy at all about that.

I liked the idea of this video but i considered it very unrealistic.
-Like wouldnt the italian colonies have just been taken down like the germans colonies in our timeline?
-And during the actual war you made it feel like the british werent even there, as you were only mentioning the french armies when the british fought in france too.
-Regarding the italian army, in our timeline they struggled against the austrians which werent reliable allies, so why would they be defeating stronger french armies on a similar type of frontline? i mean they couldnt even beat abysinnia
-and eventually the americans would get involved in a similar way than they did to our timeline they would still sell supplies to the british
-also the germans couldnt do lots of quick advancements like you showed where they advanced to normandy because of trench warfare.
anyway, sorry for lots of criticism i still enjoyed the video but some parts just didnt make sense to me. i would like to see a part 2 and have a good day.

The German-Italian plan was different: Italy whould provide an Army Corp that was to was to deploy on the southern part of the western front. As it was uncertain if Austria was to allow the italian troops+supply route to run thru Austria it was considered the possibility for the italians to invade Switzerland to have free passage to the Mulhouse area. No operation was envised for the Alps as it was deemed impossible to pass the french fortifications. On the other hands the italian navy was to put pressure on the french cost whilst the Austria one was to protect the Adriatic Sea. You can find all of this on a ‘80 brook pubblished by “Ufficio Storico Stato Maggiore dell’Esercito” (Historical Bureau of the Supreme Headquarters of the Italian Army).

i could come up with a different scenario , as italy has a larger border with france than germany , 1/2 of french troops would need to garrison it (before the war) along with the german and belgian border. which would likely stretch their forces quite thin and a push back at the marne in september of 1914 would be difficult. though nothing much would change with belgium and germany would still be stalled going through belgium. on the other hand austria hungary could have a better time in galicia due to freed up troops from the italian border. the bulgarians would likely join sooner along with the ottomen (ottomans?) and due to british and french forces being stretched so thin along europe africa and asia it could mean that the schlieffen plan is out right successful and the war in the west ends before christmas and they turn towards russia with all their might in as early as feb or march of 1915 which would give them enough troops and equipment to make a successful barbarossa style invasion into russia with far more troops than germany in ww2 (because the austrohungarian army was not yet obliterated and the ottomen and italians would be around to help) which could be estimated to being around 4 million from germany , 2.5 million from austriahungary ,1.5 million from italy and 1 million from the ottoman. this might even encourage the japanese (which you completely forgot about in the video) to join germany (maybe big maybe) and capitulate russia by 1918 at most since germany had enough trains and a booming economy unlike in ww2 where swift action was required to not go into stalemate since the german industry couldnt handle a second war of attrition. so maybe germany could get bits of lithuania and get its old land from poland (from before napoleon arrived to prussia when poland had been split between russia germany and austria hungary which made it not exist anymore for 100 years) directly along with luxembourg , half of belgium , the iron mine area near the border with france (all of verdun and sedan) this could help them supply more iron for naval production and they might even beat britain in a few years, but hey , ITS JUST A THEORY A GAME THEORY!

Same with the dervish order in Somalia, in reality all Italian colonies would be lost before the end of 1914, this isn’t even all that’s wrong with the scenario, the entente would still successfully defend the Marne as they could still outnumber the Germans and the German army would still pivot away from Paris which would open up a gap in their lines, Italy would initially be a sideshow as they could barely even advance against 70,000 Austrians at the izonzo irl what makes you think they could advance against the French in the alps, they would only need a minimal force to hold it and even if they couldn’t they’d sacrifice the land in order to hold Paris

    • @cringewatcher4229
      @cringewatcher4229 Před měsícem +2

The Italian navy, combined with the Austro Hungarian and even ottoman navies also wouldn’t be able to block off the entente, the French navy alone was massive, and the Germans still wouldn’t be able to beat the British at Jutland, so any French dreadnought force with the help of some British fleets would break any blockade attempt by the central powers

Italy and Germany have always been natural allies even before they united, their common hostility towards the Habsburg and the major powers in the West made them close allies for much of the late 19th century and even in the first years of the 20th century (Triple Alliance). Unfortunately Germany sought to reconcile with Austria, which basically forced Italy to seek support from France, which had helped the Savoy unite Italy during the Italian Independence Wars.
It's a real shame Italy and Germany didn't stay together, although the two turned out to reconcile soon before WW2.

in the world wars we Italians "changed side" when it was convenient to Italy, but it was not really during the wars themselves... it was right before Italy officially declared war or after we were already directly invaded and it was too late for Mussolini to win (so it's okay to help the Allies after that)

Not, AH empire infringed point 4 and 7 of the triple alliance where it was stated that it couldn’t start a war in the balcans without informing Italy first. That was an important point to Italy as they had beefs with each other before and that was important to Italy to protect itself. In fact Italy receded from the alliance and waited the formal 1 year before joining the war with the entente.

This may be out there, but there was a naval arms race between Greece and the Ottoman Empire in 1913 over the Aegean islands and the Greeks had plans to launch a surprise naval invasion in the Gallipoli Peninsula and capture Constantinople without ever declaring war to force the Ottomans to negotiate, but they never got the opportunity. (Due to the Ottomans negotiating with them anyways). But what if Greece went through with this plan and invaded them?

I have 2 issues with this and they’re both pointed at Italy. The French would be more divided but the Italians were notoriously even more inept in the first Great War than the second. I can see them getting some gains from mainland France and Corsica alongside some colonies but I’d be surprised if they’d get nearly as far inland as they did. I also highly doubt they’d be given Egypt. Britain would never give that up, it’d be the death knell of the empire. I’m fairly confident this would speed up British decolonization anyways but losing the Suez Canal would be way too big of a bullet for them to bite. The amount of Aussie, South African, Kenyan, and Indian soldiers who’d be pushed in there just to hold Egypt would be insane.

Then you don’t know history. In the WWI Italy was one of the strongest, quoted even from various generals from both sides. The only “ineptitude” quoted in history was that they had to take massive human lives losses to advance, but that was normal because the Austrian fortresses were difficult to breach from a lower position.

The most unrealistic part is the Spanish entenring the war and france losing that much land to Italy. I mean i can see them losing border territories and lands lost when Italy was piedmont Sardinia be returned to Italy, but they won't be able to get that much land. At least not in mainland France.
