      It's fascinating if you consider that Africa is a continent working towards a single union ( similar to European union) individually, the countries are weak, but if you consider the GDP purchasing power (PPP) Africa, as a whole, would be $6+ trillion economy. This would put it in 4th place, between India and Japan respectively, with China in first place ( 27 trillion ) and the USA + European Union tied for second at ( 22 trillion).

      They have Googlee, Amazon, Facebook Europe division there. They gave them immense tax breaks to get them to start their operation there. Tech companies say they go to Ireland because of the mild climate, which make cooling their data centers cheaper.

    Germany definitely got the MVP in my eyes. Some countries like Qatar just sat on a bunch of oil and got rich, but Germany funded massive armies in both world wars and had to pay for basically all of the destruction of Europe after there defeat in both and still somehow made it to number 19 out of 190 different nations.

      Yeah there's great disparity but even 10% of wealthy households don't get anywhere approaching 90% (it's closer to 70% of wealth)

      @@mattpliska You are very wrong. Greece proper is poor in resources. It relatively mountainous land where dominantly olives trive. For example proper Greece is nothing when you compare it with Thrace or Panonia. If you want to feed your people, those are the spots. That's why the Ancient Greeks had colonies. So that's why Greece is not rich since forever.

    This is not a perfectly representative sign for actual wealth per person, but can help get a basic understanding on where countries stand. for example, the united states has an incredibly high gdp per capita, but it's mostly because of a few ultra rich people.

    That's the issue with GDP capita. Small countries are "advantaged". I mean the top 10 is made by countries with less than 10 (and sometimes less than 2) millions people.

      not really, its just due headquarters of multinational companies which push gdp per capita (average gdp) up, median gdp per capita for ireland would be comparatively much lower, meaning this gdp per capita is not true reflection of how rich average irish is

    GDP is generally, and ever more being, seen as a poor metric to measure economic prosperity. It doesn't really account for things that actually matter and the most major flaw being that it values all economic activity, even activity that is negative such as oil spill cleanups, demolitions etc.

      To start a manufacturing economy, you need to exploit your natural resources. Once you have grown enough economically, you can transition to a service based economy and make even more money that way.

      This one's also intuitive, since workers in Africa, for example, have a salary of 100-200 dollars a month for the same work/labour as a worker in USA or western Europe, but the USA/western Europe workers earns 1200-1500 dollars a month.
      Imperialism is owning the resources, conquering the markets and/or exploiting the cheap labour. Things western countries do to third (and even second) world countries.

    The GDP per capita ppp, is not a pretty trustable measure to compare countries around the world since thee way it was mesured differs a lot from each country to other. The nominal GDP itself is not that trustable but if you try to deflate it using things that are not specifically measurable is even worst. So i would prefer to see a nominal GDP comparison for this kind of purpose, anyway I liked it.
