  • This video shows the countries that have won the most battles in history, as documented by Wikipedia.
List of battles won by country: docs.google.com/document/d/1k...
Sequence and location of battles: • Timelapse of Every Bat...
    Rules
    • Battles are included only if they have a Wikipedia article
    • Each country can only have 1 predecessor state at the same time (eg. the UK's predecessor is England, but not Scotland)
    Methodology:
I used Wikipedia as a directory of battles:
    1. I created a query with Wikidata Query to get the list of all articles tagged as "battle" by Wikipedia. This gives me about 12,000 battles
    2. I downloaded the data that is included in the top right hand table of every of those Wikipedia article. I did it for the following versions of Wikipedia: English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Greek, Turkish, Serbo-Croatian, Japanese, Danish, Norwegian, Slovakian, Dutch, Polish, Hungarian, Czech, Hindi, Hebrew, Basque, Bulgarian, Romanian, Catalan, Finnish, Swedish, Vietnamese, Persian, Indonesian, Korean
    3. I cleaned up the data on Excel to remove double entries :
    4. I created an index of countries with their predecessor states:

It is the case only since 2004. It comes from the USA and the UK trying to justify the invasion of Irak to their people. Since France opposed this invasion in the UN, their heavy propaganda, mostly in the USA, ended up saying "France doesn't want to support us in Irak because they are the cowards who surrendered in WWII". It was about bringing discredit to a country that had quite possibly the largest diplomatic network in the world, and opposed a war waged for the sake of stealing oil for private corporations' interests. This is why the globalisation of the english language is one of the worst curses this world was inflicted with. Because even you ended up biting on their lies. This language is a massive vector for them to spread propaganda and rewriting History.

im not a guy who makes surrender jokes, but i just wanted to tell you that almost all of the the surrender memes refer to world war 2, in which france was weaker than an ant against a human, and surrendered in less than a year after initial clashes with germany, and the memes dont refer to that once great napoleonic france, or that france in the 7 years war. and i can recognize that france was a great power and that it had great generals such as michel ney for example, or petain. but i will say that sadly, it was.

That's pretty much that. But truth be told, we have been invaded much more often than the other way around. From the early Middle Ages to the 1st Hundred Years War. From the Habsbourgs Empire to the 2nd Hundred Years War (both against the UK). From 1871's provocation by Bismark, to the World War in 1914, and then, to the 2nd Schlieffen plan in 1940. We always had 2 empires plotting against us, oftentimes together: the UK and the various forms of Germany. I guess that almost half of our victories are against these 2.

Luckily for France, they were mostly allies with Britain after the early 19th century. The list would be likely rather different if they kept fighting at the scale they had been fighting at during the 18th century for instance. It would have been interesting if the UK kept fighting France, because the odds are, it would mean the British would probably not get involved in WWI or maybe there'd be a completely different situation playing out altogether. It's impossible to be sure about. Chances are, a big conflict in the early 20th century would involve Britain anyway, it just makes me wonder about the British and French post-1815.

@@casinoheimdall9328 I generally agree, especially in that there'd have been a very wide range of possibilities like you say. It is improbable/impossible to try and factor in all those variables. Besides the fact there are some things we'll never know. The Anglo-French Alliance of 1908 would suggest the British and French would get on anyway but the question is, would that actually even happen if Britain and France kept fighting post-1815? Probably not. The two 'Concerts of Europe' would be disrupted.
P.S - Apologies for late reply, the notification never came through.
Also, you mean *Britons not 'Britains'.
Another thing, the Double Entente of France and Russia (1894) would be disrupted in that alternative scenario, which would almost certainly disrupt the Triple Entente from happening as well (Britain eventually agreeing to ally to both France and Russia, which was a massive geopolitical shift for several complex reasons)

    • @ThePalaeontologist

@@casinoheimdall9328 In a scenario where Britain is not France's ally in WWI (should it or something like it happen in the early 20th century, things would not be looking good for France aka potentially a larger-scale repeat of the Franco-Prussian War; with no BEF to slow the German 1st Army down in Belgium, the French led victory at the First Battle of the Marne - a pivotal battle in 1914 - might not have happened the way it did. The Germans ran out of steam and were tired at the end of a very long logistical chain from the borders of Belgium, and were pretty much done at that point fighting the British and French, until they could rest and recover. The BEF was small in 1914 but it vastly expanded and became very good at siege-breaking tactics and combined arms warfare by 1917/1918.
The point being, if Imperial Germany managed to execute the Count von Schlieffen Plan (1905 vintage) properly in 1914 it would basically change things pretty seriously (and in any scenario where the British aren't helping, all it does is instantly place more implications of pressure and strategic viability on the isolated French, whom while vastly numerically superior to the BEF initially, were still themselves matched or surpassed in numbers by the Germans in divisions etc) Of course the BEF could only do so much with 4 divisions in August-December 1914, and a couple of cavalry brigades, but it eventually grew to over 70 divisions so it really was just the beginning for the British.
At the Battle of Mons in the debut battle for the British in WWI, the British were slowly pushed back out from that Belgian town on a fortified river, though they inflicted 5 to 1 casualties on the Germans for their trouble and some of the British soldiers whom sacrificed themselves on the bridge crossings at machine gun posts which were shot at, grenade attacked and eventually overrun, were to receive the Victoria Cross. One in particular was eventually firing with one functioning arm and another bullet wound to his head but he still kept firing until he couldn't fight anymore and died.
Mons was a wake up call to the British though it was still the case they'd stopped a bit of mockery about the BEF's size. The Germans were in this propaganda atmosphere of seeing the BEF as meaningless, but then it inflicted serious casualties on them in the first battle (technically a strategic British withdrawal/defeat, but arguably a tactical victory in terms of the casualty aftermath; trading 5 to 1 casualties is never good, especially when their numerical advantage was so enormous (it was, at Mons, part of a division going up against an entire German field army slamming into their positions; they never remotely stood a chance, on that basis alone)
But they did make a fighting retreat through Belgium, hopelessly outnumbered - and still making major cavalry and infantry counterattacks in some places while making nervous withdrawals through forests with much bigger German forces flanking either sides of the forest and hoping they got out the other end first. It was touch and go, in those days. Many of the smaller skirmishes and battles between the British and Germans, in Belgium and NE France, forgotten to most. Their names, obscured by much more famous/infamous battles.
The 'Miracle on the Marne' is considered in retrospect to have technically been the point the Schlieffen Plan really failed in the West (though it is debatable, and more, consequential, with later events unfolding beyond the First Battle of the Marne) And it was the same on the Eastern Front, where the Germans didn't realise the Russians, although not having a lot going for them logistically in 1914, still had one ace up their sleeve; a few big railway lines running West.
And they of course used them to beyond maximum capacity, train-shipping over a million soldiers to the border of East Prussia in Germany, in 6 weeks, which the Schlieffen Plan simply did not anticipate (nor did it anticipate Britain joining the war so adamantly on either the Entente's or Belgium's behalf; Britain had different treaties with both the Double Entente - France and Tsarist Russia - and the Kingdom of Belgium; the difference between the Double Entente and the 'Triple Entente', being, that France and Russia would declare war on Germany and fight the Germans, if either of them individually got attacked/invaded first by the Germans. So, the Double Entente was technically always locked into fighting the moment Germany attacked either.
Britain however, being the third Entente member and the most reluctant for a range of reasons (mainly to do with not liking Tsarist Russia, but also not liking France much, either, since the then recent and needless Franco-British naval arms race of 1850-1870, which the British won easily and which only made France's chances worse in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, after pointlessly trying to get into a...stick measuring competition with Britain's massive naval forces of the Royal Navy; literally the biggest navy on the planet. Good luck with that France lol)
Britain's more unique stipulation in joining the Entente, was that it would fight Germany that way, if BOTH were attacked; cue the Schlieffen Plan to aim it's sights on both France and Russia simultaneously. France had allied with Russia in 1894, annoying Britain a bit at that time by doing so for Anglo-Afghanistan Wars and Crimean War history shaped reasons, because France was scared of Germany and not without reason. France wanted to form alliance mechanisms to resist rising German power and influence on the continental mainland of Europe.
This meant being more diplomatic with unlikely allies, like the Russians, whom a generation earlier, the French had been fighting alongside the British, in bloody battles. As far as the British Imperials were likely concerned, the 'Great Game' (proto-Cold War that often went 'hot' via conventional warfare) between Britain and Tsarist Russia, was still on in the 1890's - only a decade or so earlier, from 1878-1880, the British had won the Second Anglo-Afghan War to fortify passes such as the Khyber Pass, leading out of Eastern Afghanistan. British forces captured Kabul, riding on the backs of Elephants.
While it is often brought up (sometimes to incredulously mock the British, by Anglophobes) that the earlier First Anglo-Afghan War, had been a terrible catastrophe for the British, mostly precipitated by the sheer paranoid of British Imperial governors of British India, in the British East India Company at the time, fearing a Russian invasion via Afghanistan. It was a bit silly, but you can see their fears. They didn't know that Imperial Russia was mainly a dreadful-in-logistics paper bear.
And that same assessment of Imperial Russian capabilities, was exactly why the Schlieffen Plan the Germans used, wasn't really thinking very highly of Russian logistics and the speed of their deployments. So a million Russians pouring into East Prussia massively, unfathomably annoyed the German Imperials, as it contrasted the genuinely proven cases of Russian logistics falling flat on their face in the mid-late 19th century, prior. And that was seen in the Crimean War, most painfully. At least, until the turn-of-the-century Russo-Japanese War, which Tsarist Russia lost badly.
Britain had fought a colonial war in Afghanistan, more seriously (and by 1878, the British East India company had been gone for a couple of decades or so after mismanagement and malpractice lead the British government to seize their assets and dissolve the firm; which was risking losing the plot in India and losing all they had, over stupid things like officials in the EIC having needless insensitivity towards the fats and grease types they used in the paper ammunition cartridges of musket ammunition; primarily using pig and cow fat, which automatically p'ssed off both Muslims and Hindus spectacularly needlessly, because it was I think a cheaper option so the EIC just did that and then had a mutiny and outbreak of rebellion on their hands that was only barely contained. If you're wondering how that worked, think about it; soldiers had to bite the paper ammunition powder cartridges, which were coated in cow or pig fat/grease to ease them down the barrel better with the ramrod, so it was literally going into the soldier's mouth like he could taste it...not a great plan, clearly the EIC had lost it's mind lol way to cause a riot EIC, what stupidity)
The situation in Afghanistan in the 1870's and 1880's might not seem important, but Britain was fortifying the passes out of Afghanistan, and garrisoning them, because there was a genuine concern of Russia invading. As it turned out, they _were_ technically proven right...but literally a full _century_ later (when the Soviets invaded Afghanistan instead, and were defeated there - though they weren't really planning on going through India, to try and conquer India, as far as I am aware!) It was a classic Imperialism mindset when it came to geopolitics, geostrategy and imperial rivalry. It was constantly paranoid of some other Empire doing what they were doing. So perhaps the British military analysts were giving the Tsarists _way_ too much credit in the 1870's.

@@casinoheimdall9328 [3/3] Back in 1889, when the Two Power Standard had been introduced in the UK, the French were considered 2nd strongest and the Russians considered 3rd strongest, with the Japanese, Americans and Germans jostling for the 4th spot from the 4th-6th places. Italy could have been included in that mix, too, to make it 4th-7th places. But all Britain ever needed to do with Italy was control the Straits of Gibraltar, thus bottling up the Mediterranean strategically. It's why the Ottoman Empire never really colonised anything in the New World; European powers, prevented them, from the Western Mediterranean.
By 1905, 16 years had passed since the Two Power Standard was introduced, and much had changed. Britain was still no 1 in naval power, but it was struggling to maintain such a massive naval lead. By WWI, it would have to settle for fractional numerical advantages, rather than 'whole number' multiples of what anyone else had in the number of hulls, tonnage displacement and firepower. But there had been major changes in the balance of power at sea. Britain was no 1, yes, for now (and until roughly 1943/1944, an entire generation ahead)
Even so, the rapid and deliberately pointed naval expansion of Imperial Germany, had meant that Germany was 2nd and by then by far and a long way stronger than either the USN or the French Navy. Russia was no longer factoring into naval power rankings very much in that time, and was in a sorry state post-Tsushima. Humiliated and devastated at the losses. An entire battle fleet, essentially destroyed with massive loss of life for minimal Japanese casualties. It was a paradigm shift. But the Japanese were still no match for the German Kaiserliche Marine or less still the Royal Navy. The Japanese had sent sailors and officers to study in naval academies in England and other countries like France, Canada and the USA (but mainly England in this time, and for a couple of decades to follow)
The Anglo-Japanese Alliance of 1902, encouraged this, and Britain also built warships for Japan like the pre-dreadnought battleship, _Mikasa_ (which ironically still exists today, albeit concreted dubiously into a Japanese harbour wall as a slowly rusting museum ship - and even more ironically, is technically the last British built battleship on Earth, if we're not widening the definition to include either HMS _Warrior_ which is also a museum ship in much better condition from 1860, and HMS _Victory_ which is a century older than that albeit with many additions over time)
Technically, armoured iron-built cruisers/battleships, were, well, battleships. Just of a different design doctrine, before several arms race phases came and went. And the 1st rate ship of the line, HMS _Victory_ while doctrinally and by design, not a 'battleship' as we'd know them now, was technically a 'capital ship' of it's day. It's being a bit cheeky to expand it that far, though. Mainly, _Mikasa_ is the last one which was deliberately delineated in between either 'pre-dreadnought' or 'dreadnought', which is important.
By 1914, the naval arms race between Britain since the 1890's and that point, was still going and would of course last till 1918. Britain did out-build Germany, although it was a strain on the economy and military budget, and was more expensive than planned 'normal naval expansion rates' would have been if not for Germany putting them under pressure to bloat their own naval forces. In a way, this was a red herring - as soon, carrier technologically would supplant dreadnoughts as the most important naval units on the surface of the water (submarines aside)
By November 1918, the obvious situation was a hilariously OP Royal Navy with a navy designed to overmatch the best the Germans and their allies could throw at them, sitting there in the North Sea with the British Grand Fleet (3.3 million tonnes of warships, across hundreds and hundreds of ships including dozens of battleships and battlecruisers, and scores of light cruisers, destroyers and minesweeper/layer ships) Nobody else, not even the rapidly expanding US Navy, even came close.
The Royal Navy had to downsize rapidly of course post-WWI, with many older pre-dreadnoughts being scrapped or sunk in sections of strategically important harbours, like Dover and Scapa Flow, as block ships (to block submarines) But for like a year after WWI, Britain had such an OP navy that it could probably fight all the other navies on Earth and win lol it's not even funny. Such a naval advantage had not been seen since the Napoleonic Era for Britain. In the 1860's, the RN was 4 times stronger than it's then next nearest rival, France. But even that wasn't as bad a situation for rivals or friends/frenemies of Britain after 1918.
Naturally, it couldn't last. But before 1919 and the scuttling of the remnants of the German High Seas Fleet, impounded in Scapa Flow, the RN technically also had nominal possession of the _entire German Navy_ minus the submarines which were all separately taken away and sunk by scuttling. However, the German sailors mutinied at their stations due to socialist propaganda they started learning in Kiel, and then they sank their own ships to deny them being sold to France. Britain acted like it cared that much, while France was raging, but in truth they were not bothered about France not upgrading their navy. It was shrewd but true. It was no skin off Britain's nose, save for a bit of embarrassment and losing some money.
Britain in the interwar years remained no 1, and the USA became no 2 at Germany's expense of course; with the Japanese Imperial Navy becoming the 3rd strongest. The French were 4th strongest and may have been closer to catching the IJN if they had those German dreadnoughts they were meant to get from Britain (which the Germans sank themselves to stop that happening on 'their terms', even though the British didn't mind tbh - they didn't want France running around with a bunch of German warships really, regardless of the money side of things) It would have meant Britain had to put more ships in the British Mediterranean Fleet for a start. So they were quietly glad it happened. Italy was the 5th strongest navy by this point, expanding fast.
These rankings remained the same until WWII. And the US Navy eventually grew too massive for Britain to be considered stronger than anymore. I mean, the Royal Navy at the height of WWII still had 960,000-1,020,000 personnel. It was gigantic. By no means could anyone else rival Britain. But weirdly, then along comes the Soviets again, and they go from practically nothing to being the 2nd strongest navy by roughly 1955-1960 in the Cold War. Britain remained 3rd strongest after that point in the early Cold War, for a long time, but was soon to decline in number rapidly across the late 20th century. Alas.
And now I think in 2023 the Royal Navy is the 43rd biggest navy in the world (whhhaa happpen lol) I mean, yeah, in reality, the numerical aspect isn't as important now (though still, ultimately important) The Royal Navy has some of the finest warships in the world, deliberately very expensive. Problem is, we do need more of them. Considerably more. 43rd in numerical size, but in the top 5 in terms of equipment, professionalism and experience. It's just a shame it doesn't like, double in size to have a more respectable navy. Too many people are obsessed with the NHS and social welfare benefits in the UK now. Our ancestors would kick our backsides over what Britain has done to it's own military.
For the greatest foe of the British military, was not from without, but from within; from government. They've ended more careers and ruined more opportunities than any outside foe of this great country. That is the thing. The UK military is 5th in the world in 2023 but is knocking about with the 43rd biggest navy in the world when less than a century ago it was no 1 globally and had been no 1 for >200 years? We done f'd it up. What a waste.
