  • Miss HubNut presents Tregaron, a traditional Welsh town with a very long history, some proper characters and, possibly, an elephant...
We ate at Riverbank Cafe and Farm Shop, before exploring the bogs of Cors Caron. We also gain insight into Henry Richards and Twm Sion Cati!
HubNut merch can be found at hubnut.org
    Thanks!

Miss Hubnut your so proud of your Welsh heritage that clearly comes across in your voice ( nothing to do with said tea). But you promote the Welsh places and the local business so honestly. Who needs to go abroad when this is on our doorstep (ish ) maybe a couple of motorway and B roads but that's a trip itself.

After the railway closed, the station furniture from a number of stations was stored at a riding school near Tregaron. It was auctioned off in the early 2000s and my ex wife who lived in Tregaron at that time, got herself a lovely Great Western platform bench for a very modest sum.

Since he was the guard, he used to stop the train here and there to set snares to catch rabbits and to gather the crop for supper at Aberaeron where they lived, some four doors down Pen Cei from the Hive on the Quay. I bet that trains today don’t her that flexibility. He lived for the railway and it would have broken his heart to see Aberaeron station closed by Beaching. I remember walking up Y Cwmins, where Jewson is today, and seeing the old railway track and a few derelict carriages if not an engine iirc. This was around 1963 or so.

I lived in Tregaron when I first came to live in Wales in 2011. Y Talbot is a really good pub. That chip shop was famous back then for never being open when you wanted it to be :D. My other lasting impression was how people just left their cars parked in the middle of the road outside the Spar. We still refer to people who park oddly as "Tregaron Parkers". I moved on to Pontrhydfendyghaid (Just 10 minutes down the road ) and recall the Tregaron based Fish and Chip van owner (The Codfather) asking me where I had come from. When I told him, he was as amazed that I would move to there from the metropolis that is Tregaron.

The railways were closing due to the infamous Beeching Cuts, an act of legalised vandalism which destroyed the railway network of Wales, (and also the rest of Brtiain) which at the time, whilst not profitable, broke even. Little thought is given to the fact that significant amounts of freight were carried by the railways in Wales, a country, then as now, not well blessed with good road networks. When one considers the impact of 42 tonne lorries on the road network and our economies over reliance on these juggernauts. Imagine a Wales capable of removing these monstrosities from our roads, along with the very substantial benefits, both financial and environmental! The Welsh rail network, unlike that of England, contained little by way of duplication, (a result of how railways developed in Britain) and though not profitable were nonetheless vital socially. Closing the railways marginalised the rural Welsh economy even further than it was already marginalised.
I know Tregaron well, though I can't say that I've ever spent more than about half an hour in the place the many times I rode my motorcycle through the place during the early 1980s, past Y Talbot and on towards Llyn Brianne on the way towards Llanymddyfri and back to Cynwyl Elfed via Caerfyrddin, where I lived at the time. This circuit, either clockwise or anti-clockwise was a favoured route for a day out during the summer months when Mid Wales provided a nice contrast to the hordes of visitors to the coastal areas, though I believe that now even Mid Wales is equally a victim of overtoursim.
The whole area of Ceredigion was important in terms of cattle raising, and the places names such as Chancery (Rhydgaled) and Bow Street near Aberystwyth are references to this, named as they are after areas of London which is where the drovers of Mid Wales had as the destination for their cattle droves. The Book by Shirley Toulson and Fay Godwin The Drovers Roads of Wales details the many drovers roads that thread through Mid Wales, many of them commencing in the hills of Ceredigion.
In the late 70s the BBC produced the TV series Hawkmoor that dramatised the story of Twm Siôn Cati, and somewhat more recently the BBC produced Drovers' Gold (1997) a drama series about Welsh drovers. Neither TV series was particularly good, though Drovers' Gold did use some memorable CGI effects to turn the rear (car park area) of the (then) main University Of Wales, Cardiff building into Smithfield Market, London! Twm Siôn Cati does need to be put into the context of 16th century Ceredigion where banditry was a known means of income augmentation amongst the local farmers, with the county being regarded as the most lawless in Wales.

It's fascinating how wild Ceredigion was. In New Quay it was all about the smugglers and their tunnels

Tregaron only surpassed for the title of ‘twll tun Y Byd’ by Pontrhydfendigaid. You managed to video on the one day in the year where it doesn’t rain there.
Only joking Tregaronists. The best way to describe where Tregaron is, is to say ‘outside Y Talbot’ [hotel]. They didn’t dig deep enough to find dead elephants.

It would be great if not for being a farmer on the coast and trying to keep cows fed on non existent grass.

Great video, thank you. I agree, Tregaron is a lovely place. Every time I go there little seems to have changed, which is a good thing in my view - unspoilt by the outside world. One suggestion -Ian , please don't move the camera around quite so much ! Also we don't need to hear about Miss Hubnut's bladder......
