  • A trip to the lovely West Wales town of Cardigan. A place full of history, culture and interesting stories. Oh and of course lots of delicious food - Including THE most heavenly doughnuts. Also includes Hubnuts vs sour sweets...watch to see which won! Warning - May include singing for which I can only apologise.

Fantastic video. Thank you for sharing.
I live in Australia now, but I was born in Cardigan in 1950. All my mother's side of the family (her parents, brothers, cousins, aunties etc) and now including my mother, father and younger brother are all buried in the Netpool cemetery there. The last of my generation of family died in Newcastle Emlyn a few weeks ago. Other distant members have been there since before I was a boy.
I've been back on seven occasions since emigrating to Australia; the first being in 2004,; the last in 2017.
I went to school there for my first year of schooling. When our family left there in 1956, they had just opened the first F.W. Woolworths in the town centre and closed around 2009/10 (now the original factory shop).
As a kid I use to sit on that cannon outside the Guild hall whenever my mother took me shopping.
When my sister (also in Australia) and I visited there in 2004 the 'Shire Hall' was a souvenir shop. I still have some 'coal dogs' (figurines made of coal) and Welsh slate coasters.
'Yum Yum' is always on the list of visits for my Australian wife who now (almost) shares the same love of Cardigan as myself.
I would have hoped for one more final visit before now and I wish I had taken more of a 'complete tour' recording while I was there on recent visits.
You have brought back some wonderful memories. Thank you.

My thought on having two clocks could be Local time versus Railway time (pre- Greenwich Mean Time standardisation), assuming the rails had made it there by the time the 2nd clock was built, but looking on google, the station was (still is actually, though now used for garage services looking on streetview) on the south side of the river, on the aptly named Station Road, and said station likely would have had its' own clock too, so not too sure on that theory...

    • @Zadster
      @Zadster Před 2 lety

Here in Wakefield, there was an official time ball above one of the jewellers in the centre of town, which dropped at precisely mid-day, synchronised to the railway time. The station is half a mile away, so I wouldn't rule out this clock being on railway time.

Lovely to see this video, I was born and bred in Cardigan, leaving in 1975 when I was 26. Don't get back as often as I would like, still have family there. It has certainly changed over the years, I remember the castle being derelict, and we used to sneak in to explore as kids. On the riverside at the start that was all warehouses, and there was no footbridge. There were houses and some industrial buildings along the strand up to the bridge, which made it very narrow, but it wasn't as busy in those days. I also just about remember the railway station and getting the train to Whitland to get the train to London. Happy memories of a wonderful childhood spent there!

Keep being surprised by how similar spoken Welsh is to Irish (and Scots) Gaelic. The written forms look so different, but when pronounced , they sound so similar! Irish for river is Abhainn - pron Ow-wen. One of the bigger dairy brands over here is Avonmore - “the big river”. Great vid., thanks 🙏🏼 -- A little surprised Ian hadn’t found out what car dealer was originally in Crwst!! Impressive looking… Art Deco? building. Keep the recitals and spontaneous singing going - great. 👍🏻👍🏻

They are similar in pronunciation. I think we were too immersed in the delicious food!!

Hi I live in Tanygroes a few miles north of Cardigan, lived in area for 40 years and I am finding some of these things I just didn’t know about. So thank you will have to have another long look when next shopping there.

Brilliant video and excellent explanations about the town. I really miss Wales and want to come over and see more of it on holiday, shame its a little expensive compared to many other destinations in Europe. Miss Hubnut is clearly a history buff and also very good at working with tourism. The sour sweet tasting was funny, great faces you both made. Thank you and best wishes from Copenhagen, Denmark :-)

Ah you featured Queens bakery. I always go there when I'm in town. The other places you mention for food look great too. Also thanks for the useful pronunciation of place names in your video. As a non native speaker it's reassuring to known how to say these. I'm slowly learning.

Brilliant Video on Aberteifi! I do like these "tours"...Wonderful part of the world, West Wales..and haven't been since our "Borth" trip back in 2011, feeling the need to re-acquaint myself with the place. During the "Big Bite" scene, you said look at the Big Bite shop...but was distracted by, what looked like, a "Fox" Bodied Mustang driving by!!!! Sorry...blame Mr Hubnut!!
