Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world's most hated audio tools. Today we are going to talk about the Roland Boutique SH-01A. Is this digital synth clone of the iconic Roland SH-101 analog synthesizer still up to the job or is it surpassed by the Behringer MS-1 or the even more compact Roland Aira Compact S-1?
Thanks to Klangfarbe for letting lending me one of their floor models:

Former SH101 owner, sold it and bought the SH01A, it's a good substitute. And they kept the clock input and the good sequencer, which is a must. I was afraid that the snappy envelopes and the filter on the SH01A would not cut it, but it's very identical to my old SH101. Usable and simple with as many sweet spots as there are stars in the universe. Of course we all know that Bad gear is the ultimate star.
Thank you!!! SH-101-style sequencer is so great!
Will the clock input advance the arpeggio like on the OG or did they leave that out like on the JU-06a?
@@BeniRoseMusic Luckily on this one. it does
I bought my (original) 101 way back in the mid 80s... paid about $150 for it and it was great... stupidly sold it for a song along with all my other synths (106, JX3P etc etc) when NOBODY wanted analogue synths... time-travel machine please? Anyway, the SH01-A really ticked a lot of boxes and this was the only one of the reissues I wanted to buy and I think it's fantastic.
@@afoltz1982 Nah, my SH101 was grey and so is my SH01A ;)
Once again, an absolute delight, Florian!
I can only imagine how much time it takes you to incorporate so many appropriate memes throughout each show. I just wanted you to know that I watch every episode at least twice. The first time, I pause to read each of the memes. The second time through, I play it straight so I can concentrate on what you're saying. I just wanted you to know that your significant efforts are not ignored! Well-done as always, good sir! Wonderful work!
Thank you so much!!!
I know the time we spend to clic pause..came back a few seconds and stop the video for reading..😆
@@AudioPilz
Also, I'm sure that most of the world recognizes that these videos may be inspired by negative comments about certain instruments, but your work always demonstrates the potential good for so many of these synths. I own many that you have featured and it always makes me smile to see an episode about an instrument I love. In fact, I have a colleague who uses your videos to populate his "to buy" list! I own an Alesis Ion that he always liked, but after watching your Bad Gear episode featuring the Micron, he went out and bought that. He is very pleased with what it does. Thank you for your dedication to the community, my friend.
Peace.
Seriously! I suspect that a whole day gets dedicated to meme editing every week. 🎥📼📺
@@infn8loopmusic your work about synth functions is great.😊 And the memes are funny ..sometimes I make screenshot ✌🏻
is there no end to your talents? those sick dance moves you bust in that dark techno finale and then floating away hanging from those balloons! You shaved off your beard and lost the glasses but it was obviously you
You know too much;)
Agreed he must put some amount of time and effort into these videos
@@alastairfraser8177 Yes, Florian when do you sleep??
These video are a joy to watch and the sounds/jams you make are a joy to listen to!
Thank you so much!!!
One of the synths I learned on to start my collection and I absolutely still love it years later and sounds great sequenced
👍👍👍
Haha, that finale!
Great work as always, props for bringing out quality episodes every single week!
Thank you so much!!!
i laughed as i think the blue/red are ugly as hell
Weisst Du, you really are a treasure! The thoroughness / meticulous attention to detail in your reviews is world class; your sense of humor makes living in bad times just enough more bearable to make a difference. Danke!
Vielen herzlichen Dank!!!
Awesome episode! 😊 This tiny thing does sound very good! 😊
Thank you!!!
Man that car video was next level!😍 I have owned both and use the boutique always. A great machine.. Suddenly polyphony puts this into a whole new realm.🙏🏼❤️
Thank you!!! Agreed!
Ok, this little synth is very impressive. Thank you for another fun filled episode! I always look forward to Friday nights because of Bad Gear. The last jam was so epic paired with the funny video you have for it. Some other bad gear to feature on your show would be anything Farfisa, the Korg Z1, and the Akai AX60. Thanks again, you have the best channel on CZcams! Much respect!
Thank you so much!!!
I've wanted this for a long time :) thanks
Always a pleasure!!!
Amazing--I have the blue one, and don't think I will ever let it go. Especially after seeing the magic you are able to pull out of it!
Thank you!!! These look nice!
Awahh... I love my 'lil SHO1A! Great synth for learning basics on. Loves every pedal you run it through, too!
Agreed!!! Super pedal friendly!!!
Agree, it's laid out in a way that made general synth settings click better for me.
Thanks for doing the SH-01A, still one of my most favourite synths of my collection. So quick and easy to create a patch that I don't even bother with saving any! Anyway, whilst the LFO cannot be synched as such, you can trigger it with the gate switch (set to LFO) with, for example a sequence, which more or less solves that problem. I use that a lot with the random LFO output. Great fun.
Thanks for the heads up!!!
Woah thanks for this, I'll have to give this a try
Adding my voice to the chorus to say that the jams are great and getting better every time, look forward to every episode
Thank you so much!!!
@4:36 thank you for the "WOW" it's always the highlight of an episode for me and i lamented it's absence in the previous episode 🥺🥺🥺😄
Thank you!!!
Damn, this is exactly what I was looking for for my high performance shopping spree! Thanks AudioPilz!
Thank you!!!
The intro sound amazing 😍
Thanks!!!
One of the best Boutiques I've used. It's one of the only ones where the controls aren't too cramped. Also, I know it's VA, but I actually preferred the sound of this to the analogue SE-02
Yeah, it's spot-on!
The VA Roland uses now is ACB "Analog Circuit Behavior" which means they actually emulate every single component of the original analog circuit board. It results in some really authentic sounding emulations.
@@inthefade Unfortunately they also use ABM, "poor man's" ACB because less expensive and less resource hungry.
@@inthefade ACB first appeared on the Aira System 1 and System 8. It isn't new technology. I'm glad they chose to stick with it in the new Aira "volcas".
First, always. Of course yet another wonderful presentation, you are unstoppable!
Congrats, thanks!!!

Love this episode of BAD GEAR...!!!! As someone that owns an SH-101 ( since 1994) and an SH-01a , the key selling points for me are portability , rugged metal case construction , MIDI to CV conversion out including via your DAW , 64 patch memories , 64 sequence memory , poly and unison mode , and velocity sensitivity . When you consider that 101 has no patch memory and a simple single 100 note sequencer, that is an immeasurable enhancement.
While I can hear the difference standalone , more in that undefinable ``oomph" of the SH-101 , I can never hear the difference when its in a mix . I often use the sh-01a sequencer to drive my 101 in unison and the blend of two voices sounds massive particularly if you drive it at different octaves, with slight detune .
The 01a is just one of those little synths that I would never part with . Sure it has no effects , but a really compact little outdoor relaxation setup is to run it through the Korg NTS-1 which can run off a USB battery pack , for lush reverbs, chorus and ping pong delay . I prefer to run the 01a off rechargeable batteries at all times , so no power supply noise . Hope this helps in evaluating more BAD GEAR !
Thanks for the input!!!
Absolutely love the SH01a. I have an original 101 and it's always been a favorite. If I'm driving to shows I bring it. If I'm flying to gigs I bring the 01a and frankly there's no practical difference other than having to move small sliders with a little more intent. I keep mine in OG mode, and haven't even explored the polyphony after four years of ownership, but this video inspired me to maybe look into that. And who doesn't love chord memory?
Nice!!! Chord mode is super nice!!!
Pricewise, I would opt for the S-1, however the miniaturized layout of the SH-01A and sound are authentic based on your demo. Thanks again for another great episode and great compositions!
Thanks!!! Yeah, this one seems spot-on!
First synth I ever bought in the early 1980s. Of course then I was left lusting after a DX7 but no money for that. Bronski Beat played at south bank poly student union in front of 30 odd people just before they broke with… sh101. Love that puppy and the boutique sounds close. Thanks for a fun vid and trip down memory lane. Wish I’d kept the 101 but there you go.
your finale visuals are always either amazing or off the wall/crazy/funny (like this one 😂) but also if one closes one's eyes ...by itself the finale is also really great music to chill to 😎👌🏻
Thank you!!!
How are we expected to get through the week without our Nick Batt MEME? Otherwise, nice job.
There's a meta-Nick Batt meme in there;)
I have learned to hover over the pause button during your videos. This one didn't disappoint!
Thank you!!!
I really like the melodies that you produce in all your videos! Make them longer)
Thank you for the feedback!!!
Digging that final jam with all 101 sounds.
Thank you!!!
it brings me such joy to see these videos about Roland.. this obviously is because of what they did to themselves..
❤️❤️❤️ Roland❤️❤️❤️
Fantastic DAW Audio/Video Delight!
Thank you!!!
I got the SH-01 a long while back, happens to be one of my faves, very simple to use and quickly create the sounds that I want.
Nice!!!
Using just this one synths for all the parts is such a great flex! :)
Thank you!!!
Happy Friday Florian!
Have a nice weekend!!!
I loved the animation towards the end 😅
Classic YT meme!!!
No fair, I love the Botique Line. They keep the people with big Fingers away.
😂
Lol
[looks sadly at fingers] Yes. Yes they do.
Big fingers here. 😢
So true😢
immer wieder informativ und sehr unterhaltsam,,,,vollknorke..:)
Vielen Dank!
That track at the end was dope!
Thank you!!!
One of the better boutiques next to the SE-02. Great stuff again Florian!
Thanks!!!
This is the best boutique synth of them all. I’m pretty sure that if you hold shift and play with the mod speed it clocks to midi.
Thank you for the heads up!!!
I have one and the original, they are pretty close 99% of the time. I like the extra wave forms on the LFO, and unison, 4 notes, and most of all... patch storage. Good for live and unlike the original it does not go out of tune. Great demo, that Dark Techno track is killer.
Thank you!!!
I think I’ve had the SH-01A for a while now. It’s really fun.
Nice!!!
Great video.
Thank you!!!
sounds great!
👍👍👍
Nice job! 😀👏
Thanks!!!
Nice one, brova. For this one I’m mostly cooking fresh chantarelles from the woods, blueberry pie, some lager and hash after sauna. Good times.
Ah, Friday at its best!!! Have a nice one!!!
Great jams! :)
Thank you!!!
I like the SH-01A so much that I've got 2 of them, one gray and one blue (was even thinkin about getting the red one, but got the Behringer MS-101 in red instead...). The SH-01A has been in almost every live setup I've used since I got the first one. A really good little synth.
Nice!!!!
I can only imagine the amount of work that goes into one of these. And even if I’m just counting the meme production.
It takes me a freaking HOUR of stop-rewind-play-repeat just to watch his 5 minutes video!!! 😅😅😅
@@jhelmwaterw totally worth it.
Thank you!!!
There was once a softsynth called TS-404. It was a standalone program and then eventually got integrated into Fruity Loops. This sounds exactly like it.
Nice, I have to check it out!
That shot of Emily Hopkins with a pedal necklace cracked me up!
Legend!!!
I had all the first couple waves of boutiques. ShO1a is the only one i still have. i love it! You'd have to dig around to find many people calling it bad gear.
It's still both a Roland and a Boutique;)
Hello! I'm a great fan of the show. Love your content, always funny and very good music :) I have a non-video related question: I'm visiting Vienna in a couple months. As you can guess from my CZcams name I'm from Uruguay and we don't have a wide variety of stuff to buy, so I'm looking forward to get some "bad gear" while in Europe. Do you know of any places in Vienna (or Bratislava or even Prague since I'm visiting those cities as well) where I can buy used musical gear? I'm particularly looking for a Keystep Pro but any other small piece of gear I can carry back with me might be interesting. Thanks, keep it up!
Klangfarbe in Vienna is a great place (in a nice historic building)
Thank you Klank Father!
😅
I hit like as soon as I see a new video
Thank you!!!
That last tune is a real banger, ngl!
Thank you!!!
That was a wonderful synth demo. Did you trigger all the sounds and beats with the internal sequencer or an external one?
Thank you, both actually!!!
In the original if you insert a clock signal or a trigger on the ext clock in, the random LFO wave syncs to the pulse, maybe this works also on the sh01a.
Thanks for the heads up!!!
I love your videos. Where do you find all these awesome memes? Is there a social media group where you find them, or are you creating them yourself? Screencapping them in your videos has basically become a sport for me, lol. I want the source!!
Both!!! Thanks!!! Synth Memes on FB and synthesizercirclej*rk on reddit come to mind
@@AudioPilz Thanks, I'll check it out! I almost died laughing at that meme in the Waldorf Pulse video that's a picture of you with the caption "That is a nice synth you have there … Would be a shame if I made an episode about it." 🤣
I had a blue one of these. I sold it to make rent during covid, but I also didn't really miss it afterward 😐
Ah, the blue one! Paying rent is a priority though...
Friday already? wow.
Bring back the keytar
Great episode
Go roland go!
Cheers
Thanks!!!
OK enough's enough...I drove *300 kilometers* (round trip) the DAY BEFORE THIS VIDEO to buy one of these 2nd hand. And yes, I first checked for a Bad Gear episode and saw nothing on the SH-01a - just the other boutiques.
So I'm like "well people say this is good, and Florian DIDN'T EVEN BOTHER doing a video on it so it MUST be super good, right?!" 😍
One day later.....DOH!! 🤣🤣🤣
So yeah....NOT watching this episode lol. Well, not until I've had time to get to know the unit myself. Fwiw I'm not actually pissed this has come up on Bad Gear - it is a boutique, so of course it's not going to tick boxes like a Moog One or OB-X8 or something.
Meanwhile, I needed a simple hands-on synth for learning synthesis. The SH-101 is well known for that experience, and I almost got a 'cheap' one (AUS $1200 with a faulty keybed is 'cheap' 🙃😂) - but it sold to someone else.
And then I remembered the boutiques' ACB tech sounds pretty much spot on. Plus unlike the S-1, the controls and layout on the SH-01a duplicate the original, and isn't fiddly (imo), so now I have that ridiculously good SH-101 bass tone in my arsenal (I blame Alex Ball's 'how to' videos for this GAS by the way...him and that dodgy geezer Geert Van Schlanger 😜). Spent $400 not $1200, and unlike the vintage synth it's got patches, I can save my own, it has midi, etc etc etc.
Oh, and I've barely played around with it, and it already sounds awesome 😁
What a coincidence!!!
Honestly I think the Behringer MS1 needs to be next now. A lot to love for a sh101 alternative but a lot of people seem to hate it, despite being IMO the closest you'll get. Awesome jams!
Behringer really upped their game on the artist relations side according to loopop so I might wanna tread lightly;)
It's about time!
@@AudioPilz Yeah, fair! Its more fun poking Roland anyway haha
Version 2 on the starboard bow, apparently. Love my V1.
@@birdie17uk They have fixed the auto glide implementation in V2 to make it identical to a 101- I will being buying .
You make that synth soung great (as usual). If i was to get one, i would probably go for the Behringer one, or the plug out for my system 1 may be a good choice to.
Thank you!!!
yet another video I have to watch 3x to get all the jokes. no need to hunt down all the limited edition colors, I got my blue, that's all I need. you're doing a great service to the synth world, Florian, I hope you know that.
Thank you so much!!!
The blue is super nice! That’s what I wanted, but I couldn’t find any, so I got a red one (which is also pretty cool).
It sounds awesome to me! I hate how small it is, but that Bass sounds big. I might grab one!
Nice bass indeed!!!
Dude... you're amazing
❤️❤️❤️
Had sh 01 for some time. Really cool piece of kit. Similar to sh 101 ive used briefly. Same cool filter that sounds really even in all octaves and cutoff points. Now, polyphony and presets make huge difference. I have it with keyboard, and oh boy! Played it along with minimoog the other day and it stands on its own. Its amazing! Microbrute has way less sweet spots and feels a bit like a toy in comparison, although its architecture is somewhat comparable.
Thanx as always Florian. Another awesome episode. Think I'll stick with my S-1 though even though the grey on black label lettering is an epic fail.
I noticed that Down Under Uli's MS-1 is cheaper than than a keyboard less SH-101A. Plus red is readily available. 😂
Not only in down under;) thanks!!!
formidable 80´s jam production
Thank you!!!
Got started on my journey early 80’s with an mc202 so the sliders are like a return home, (except they are recordable to external seq✌️). My favourite goto
MC-202 is a classic!!!
Glad to see "late for a meeting" put to good use.
Classic!!!
"The manual doesn't deserve its name" made me chuckle
😀
nice tunes and demo. would like to see a korg m3 soon..
Thank you!!! Great suggestion!!!
I got an SH-01A red addition used about 6 months after they dropped. I used it quite a bit, and some of my favorite personal tracks I recorded with it. Still, I ended up parting with the SH-01A once I realized I prefer using presets as opposed to building a tone from scratch (though it does have like 64 presets!). Now I have an MC-101 with literally hundreds of MC-101 presets, and I haven't looked back.
Super interested in the MC101
SH01A is really quite awesome! The sound is amazing.
👍👍👍
I have the red MS101 (yes, the pre-lawsuit version). It also makes sound the would be interpreted as aliasing except it’s totally analogue. The only way you could tell the difference comparing those two is the noise floor.
Great video as always.
I havnt uses any boutique gear and I'm not a synth purist but I feel that while Roland have done a great job sound wise, they keep missing the mark with thr interface/form factor with this kind of thing.
I'm not sure of the solution but I think it might be good for them to not be quite so small so that they aren't tedious to use physically.
That said, it seems like they sound great!
Thank you!!! Agreed!!!
afaik, the only boutique which has a pleasant midi implementation. It sends all parameter cc out on preset change. Makes it useful for live situations.
True that!!!
Nice video! I have the Behringer instegade and it i really nice.
Btw, the BMW My Car video… where can I find it?
Thanks!!! Late for meeting
😂 this just made my day! 😂 you two geniuses!!

This is going to hurt, i love mine (edit - except those awful touch strips)

Nothing personal;) Have a nice weekend!!!
Somehow my notification bell was turned off for this channel I thought he took a break lol
Break? Me? Not yet;)
So glad I still have my original…

Nice one!!! Thanks!
Great review as always. Roland does a lot of heavy lifting for you. I reckon I’d go the B full size alternative. That manikin guy was fucking horrifying!
Thank you!!!
Hello, good video, as usual you use to do. A question please, the Barbie Tecno IS amazing, where did you get the picture, i would like to buy if possible😂, thank you in avance man
Thanks!!! Synth memes on FB and synthesizercirclej*rk are usually helpful when it comes to stuff like this
Great episode. I used to own a sh 101 and an mc 202. I thought the 202 sounded better . Bouncier and cleaner. This 101 a sounded great. I want one.
Thank you!!!
2:53 I definitely was not expecting a Caleb Gallo meme from Bad Gear!
;)
HAPPY FRIDAY!
❤️❤️❤️
If only Roland made original stuff again.
Hey, it's the original clone;)
Funny, they say the same about Uli... LOL!
Say that again please. Like 50 times.
Man, can you please create some Bad Gear merch? Tshirts and hats and hoodies and stuff. We would all buy the crap out of it. Danke.
Great idea, thanks!!!
when i saw "roland" i expected a much harsher review lol
great jams!

Nice show.
Thanks

1:07 big Wendy Carlos vibes with that touch strip slide there
😀😀😀Thanks!!! Big fan here!
Wonderful stuff, I do like this Boutique, but I fear the naked Strech Armstrong dude in the final video is going to haunt my nightmares for a while. What the flippin heck :-)
Late for meeting... Much recommended
The music you make on all this bad gear is kind of amazing. I'm wondering what you could do with some GOOD GEAR? Maybe a Good Gear episode just to mix things up?
Thanks!!! I suck at using good gear;)
@@AudioPilz The worse the gear the better the jam. Makes total sense.
too many good pieces of gear lately, you had to go back to the Roland Boutique well to find the bad stuff? Great episode as always.

I want to see you cover the Roland GR55. Might be a breakaway from the thesis statement of the channel, but I think you would cover it well.
Great idea, thanks!!!
breathtaking...
