    Bought a 1978 Evinrude 4806e 4 hp. The little thing idled like a champ at slow speed and while not being fast by any means, served us well during a recent fishing trip.

      They're wonderful little motors. I have a few of them and one of the first few motors I bought for my collection was a '69 Evinrude Lightwin 4hp. They're not gast by any means, but they are great running little motors and typically idle nicely. This one had a factory casting flaw that was probably covered by paint and allowed it to pass inspection and test run at the factory. Once that was fixed, it dod very well. Thanks for watching!

      @@oldjohnnyrude8404 Thanks for the quick reply. We bought it used for this trip, it looked to be in nice shape, and I was surprised to see how slow we could troll with it. Still have to learn how to «play» with the slow speed adjustment, but aside from that, it was a good investment at CDN$300 split three ways, haha! Especially since renting a motor was well over $125 each year. It also seems to be very fuel efficient! Next tank, I'll mix it closer to 45:1 or 40:1, as per suggestions I've seen floating around.

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  Před 27 dny +1

      @@hugolafhugolaf These are super trolling motors and woth the weedless angle drive gearcase, they really handle weedy water well. Yes, this was a good investment considering the cost to rent a motor. I usually run mine on 24:1 and since the carburetor is adjustable it can be set for optimal running for whatever mix you run. 40:1 will be better than 50:1 since these motors don't have any rolling bearings on the connecting rods.

      @@hugolafhugolaf I have not yet tested the right angle "High Thrust" gearcase directly against the weedless angle drive for top speed. I can definitely say that the performance in the weeds is not very good with the right angle drive and is excellent with the weedless drive. These motors aren't very fast anyway. May as well have the superior weedy water performance.

    Hey bud, found this great video as I am looking at buying one in my area BUT the owner says it is "Forward Only" and the motor has to be 'turned around' for reverse. Having never owned a motor in my life & not wanting to make a hundreds of $ mistake....it this a correctable problem or just what is going on do ya think? Thanks much for your input!

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  Před 4 lety +1

      These are very nice little motors. They are direct drive and do not have a shiftable gearcase. They are, indeed, forward only. Reverse is attained by rotating the motor 180°. There is a reverse lock on the swivel bracket and exhaust housing to prevent the motor for tilting itself out of the water when running in "reverse". This is not a mistake to be corrected, but is the design as it was intended. It makes for a very simple, durable, and lightweight fishing motor. Thanks for watching!

      Not knowing when the last time was that it had a tune up, I would recommend doing new points and condensers, setting the new points, new spark plugs and giving the carb a soak, a thorough cleaning, and putting a new BRP Evinrude kit in it. Once that is done you should be able to adjust the low speed mixture for an excellent idle. Thanks for watching!

      I am guessing the BRP kit is the kit with the new points and condensers. My grandfather has owned this motor for over 30 years. I changed the impeller last year, and it had never been changed. I doubt it has ever had a tune up, besides a spark plug. We do run the gas out of it before we put it away for the winter. I will let you know how it turns out. Thanks again!

      @oldjohnnyrude8404  Před 5 lety +1

      @@nathanmutz2881 It definitely needs a tune up if it has been that long. It also needs a water pump impeller before it gets run so the old one doesn't break up and cause blockages in the cooling system.
      The BRP Evinrude is the OEM brand kit. It is the best quality available. I recommend that over aftermarket like Sierra or something like that. Available at your local Evinrude dealer and online from Marineengine.com or other sources. Thanks for watching. Great little motors when runnimg right.

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  Před 2 lety +1

      I usually set the high speed at 1 turn out and the low speed at 1.5 turns out from lightly seated. These settings will be rich and will have to be leaned out for beat running condition. Set the high speed for best running condition at wide open throttle. Once that is set and the engine is warm, idle the motor down and start leaning out the low speed needle. Adjust the throttle down once the speed picks up and smooths out and continue to dial in the low speed and adjust the throttle position to find the best idle at the lowest throttle position. If it sneezes and stalls it is too lean. Midway between where it sneezes and where the idle starts to fall off on the rich side should be the ideal setting. Thanks for watching!

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  Před 3 lety

      The points were spot on and set with a factory timing tool. I do realize the off position works by retarding the spark far enough to simply not allow the engine to run. The points setting has much more to do with the strength of the spark than advance. It does affect advance slightly and is enough to throw idle quality off if they're off. That could cause it to die early and not run properly at wide open. Thanks for watching!
