Asmongold, I'm a fat guy. Everything you said regarding being overweight and body positivity is absolutely right. I don't want people to tell me that I'm healthy at any size, they are just as harmful to people as people who bully people for being overweight.
Bullying people is wrong, but when it comes to weight 'killing with kindness' is just as harmful.
I'm on my own journey to try to improve my lifestyle because I don't want to be dead at 50 or sooner, and it's sad to me that there's a lot of people who know they're unhealthy (whether it's food, drugs, booze, etc.) but people around them enable them instead of trying to help them.

Nice, glad to see you wanting to improve yourself. Wanting to reduce your weight is good if you feel like you aren't healthy the way you are now.
Granted, it's also not good to take it too far and turn oneself into a skeleton. There's a certain level of fat that WONT kill you. Having a potbelly or some flab on your arms and legs isn't going to give you a heart attack.
But these are very minor things, it's when you cross the threshold to obesity when your habits start to kill you. Given your outlook on yourself however, I don't think you're going to go to either extreme but rather find a nice middle ground where you feel the best. I wish you good luck on your journey to a better body.

      1/3 is obese.
Most people don't even understand what obese means. Obese doesn't mean oh he has some belly fat. Obese is when you have 30kg more than you should. If you are a normal dude, imagine having 30kg more right now.

In February of 2015 I was just shy of 400lbs. I had weight loss surgery and it saved my life. No one is "healthy at any size", If you find someone that hasn't suffered detrimental effects, it's just that they aren't at that point yet. Some old people live to be over 100, some don't. It's genetics. A fat person that hasn't seen any negative effects might be one of those people that would have lived to be 110 if they were thin. Now they'll die at 75 instead.
People that push the body positive narrative are either fat people in denial or thin people looking for a cause to white knight for to get attention and in either case, they're killing people. My weight loss saved my life and even then I still have health problems that came from being overweight that will never go away. My back and knees will never be good again. Should a fat person be shamed? No, but they should be encouraged to live better. They feel trapped and shame will make their situation worse. No fat people genuinely think it's ok and if they say they do, they're faking it to feel better.

I agree, being obese isn't healthy. My weight has fluctuated by so many pounds in my adulthood, I can't even count anymore and I've never been as unhealthy in the last year as I am now. While I'm currently working on improving my health yet again, my weight has zero impact on the rest of population. I'm not in the hospital any more than anyone else, in fact, I'm probably in less. Yet, when a smoker invades my personal space, even my enclosed car, and the smell of that toxic smoke sends me into an allergic fit, their "lifestyle" is being imposed onto me. That's why there's a smoking section, because smoking BOTHERS people. The only people my fatness bothers are assholes, but trust me, it'll never bother you as much as it bothers me.

I have watched as people I love have gotten heavy and get diagnosed with diabetes. Stop treating it like a “different lifestyle” or “all shapes are healthy” because that is factually not even true. ive heard this before in the military, pertaining to "walking warrants" or technical warrant officers. their role within the unit, at least at my level, was to know everything that WE knew, and also to know the things THEY didnt know, or how to find them.
our warrant officer was the most knowledgeable person ive ever met, and i only ever had to interact with them two times. theres a lot to be said for people who seek knowledge on things they dont know, so they can both be better educated, AND to educate those around them. education is arguably one of the most valuable things you can have, and its a shame more people cant get beyond the five feet around themselves and have a broader view of both the world and themselves.

I understand the point with disliking body positivity/normalising being fat, but I feel originally the goal was to make fat people feel less ashamed of themselves, because being free of the paralysing shame helps you do something about it. If you're morbidly obese, and the entire world tells you you're disgusting, it's really difficult to start exercising and make an effort in public. I've only ever been overweight rather than obese, but having been bullied for that in school I can tell you that the shame and self-hate never leaves you.
I know some people are gonna disagree even with saying "It's ok if you don't hate yourself and you're really fat", but hating yourself/feeling like everyone thinks you're disgusting can be both a motivator for changing your life, but also a massive hindrance that stops you from doing anything at all, both at the same time. I think the idea should be "We're all human, it's your choice, but accept that it is not good for you."

But that's not genuinely good self-confidence.
I feel like fat people are easy targets because hating on them is so accepted and even expected. You never know someone's story, you don't know what they're deflecting or avoiding by eating too much or by avoiding putting genuine effort into losing weight. Or maybe they did and the weight came back even worse, and they have to start all over again. Since you touched on the mental health effects of fat shaming/bullying, I felt like I needed to add my two cents in as someone who struggles with both weight and mental health. This will be a little tricky to explain and very rambly.
I totally agree that being overweight isn't something that can be celebrated or normalized, but at the same time, the ideas surrounding that can lead to more subtle bullying, whether intentionally or not. Like someone might not be making fun of me for being fat outright, but the constant stream of being told "You're unhealthy" or "You should change your lifestyle" over and over can be even more damaging to people. That pressure, especially when hidden behind a veil of concern continues to build up over time until the recipient hits their breaking point. For some people it is easier to shrug off the explicit bullying, but the barrage of "concerned comments" from people will destroy them.
Now I'm not saying you should never talk to people about their weight, but I do think it is a good idea to be conscious of who, when, and where you're doing it. This is really only a conversation you should have with close friends and family. Maybe that person is down 60 pounds from their old weight and is starting to struggle. If you don't know them, don't comment on it.
Think about when you're going to talk about it. The easiest example is when the person is eating. Maybe you noticed they have a lot of food on their plate. You don't need to comment right then and there. Set aside some time for later to discuss it. Nobody wants to be called out like that. It is unbelievably frustrating and humiliating. Just save your discussion for later, and they will be both less hurt and probably more receptive to the idea.
Finally, don't EVER EVER EVER do this shit to someone in public. Even if you are genuinely concerned for the other person, humiliating them in front of other people is never going to help your cause.
Some ideas for you guys out there who want to help your fat friends/family:
Don't push the issue too hard. Some people are just not ready. Be supportive of them and understand that this is about them, not you. They need to be the one to ultimately decide that they want to turn their life around. Some people need to ease into a lifestyle change. One of the more helpful things is to offer to start doing exercise with your friend/family member. This is a massive battle, both physically and mentally. A lot of people aren't able to start such a daunting task on their own, and a small setback can easily kill their motivation completely. If you aren't able to exercise together, at least be there to support them the best you can.

The thing about overweight people is that they are overweight because eating food makes them feel good. This is because they have some sort of mental issues like being bullied at a young age for example. The problem is that people, not even the overweight people themselves, realize this. This problem is a subconscious thing. That is why "Just eat healthy" doesn't really work and it's very mentally taxing to to try to lose weight when your brain tells you to eat more unhealthy stuff. The right way to fix obesity is to first come terms with one's mental health issues and improve one's mental health. This way one stops eating to make themselves feel good and that way fix their weight problem.
How do I know that? Because I've gone through this journey.

    • @naukumaija7056
      @naukumaija7056 Pƙed 2 lety +2

Exactly. People oversimplify this, and this isn't to say that because the fix isn't simple, being morbidly obese isn't unhealthy. It's the "bro just eat less than you expend 4Head" over and over again who either had an easy time losing weight, or who have never even had to try. Add to that that too little sleep IMMEDIATELY cuts your calorie expenditure by tens of percents, after ONE night, getting worse over longer periods of time, and people are working several jobs, having no time, no energy, no motivation, no hope that they'll ever improve. And then they get called disgusting and lazy on top of that. It's so sort-sighted and simplistic.

  • @Majorfuckinghero
    @Majorfuckinghero Pƙed 2 lety +15

As someone who has been dealing with weight going up and down, left and right my whole life; I think it's a difficult topic to grasp for anyone who hasn't ever had to deal with it. There's plenty of reasons beyond just being a glutton that loves food, which keeps people in a mental state of feeling like changing their lifestyle is a monumental task. I am all for body positivity, in the sense that we should accept each other for how we look; fat, skinny, wrinkly, dimply, you name it. But I also would never condone an unhealthy lifestyle, or pretend that it's a good thing, because evidently it is not. I just wouldn't say anything, unless it was someone close to me that I cared for. And even /then/ I'd chose my words carefully, because being a dick about it just doesn't serve a purpose other than demotivating, demoralizing and making someone that probably already struggles with themselves, feel like an even bigger loser. I know I did at least.
I feel like a lot of people out there think fat people walk around in some sort of bubble of ignorance, and just willfully chose to want to be fat, because they just don't want to stop eating all the time. Where as in my experience, not just with myself, but also having been around a lot of overweight people; most, if not all of them are plenty aware and a majority are disgusted with themselves already. Which then brings us to the "why" part. Why do they do it? Why don't they just cut the calories and start running? All valid questions, which essentially is the same question many of them ask themselves too. "Why can't I motivate my fat ass? Why am I such a fucking loser. I'm just a fat lazy slob, I can't do anything." Now, I can't speak for everyone when it comes to the reasoning behind their situation - but for me personally it is very much tied to my emotional state. I've battled with depression and anxiety since my early teens, and I'm 35 now. The only thing that has ever managed to sort of dull it all down, all the anxiety and bouts of heavy depression has literally been the feeling of being 'full' after having eaten. So as you can guess, it just became a way for me to cope with all the emotional mumbojumbo going on up in my head. And yea, I'd notice I'd get fatter, sure. But it was either feeling sad about being fat, or dulling the constant emotional baggage and anxiety. I often chose the latter, and I still do from time to time. It took me years of going on diets and trying to change my lifestyle and failing over and over, to realize my problem wasn't the eating, as much as it was the reason behind it. And that dealing with the mental part first was the key to successfully being able to lose the weight and keep it off.
Tldr; Body positivety is fine. Glorifying and saying obesity is good ISN'T. Don't be a dick.

Truth be told, out of the several coworkers I have that got Covid-19, only the fat ones went to the hospital. Not only that, they nearly died. One of them got Covid in late August and still hasn't come back to work due to his time in the hospital and then physical therapy needed because of his lack of physical movement during that time. The one who returned to work ranted how it changed his life and how he'd do better. He didn't. That's the true addiction obese people have to food. It's scary and shameful. These people need help and should not be encouraged to continue to be fat. Just because something so unhealthy is technically legal doesn't make it "OK."

As someone who is obese losing weight is predominantly a motivational issue. I would much rather see encouraging success stories of people losing weight than the normalization of being obese. While it is okay to want to feel good in your own body, too many people just stop trying to improve themselves and think that the place they are at in life is good enough.

People have access to the most food of wider varieties than any other generation before them, and the brain makes some of the worst food taste amazing, because it doesn't know any better and people are now being raised with drinking only soda like its water being considered normal.

I’ve seen more then enough people with muscles on par with bodybuilders that you could never see due to their body shape. Obesity can of course be unhealthy, but running of the BMI definition can be complete bullshit for anyone who isn’t a white man under 6’. The ones who made it to more advanced ages where all similar stories before they came there. It was that they were healthy until literally days ago, when they take a fall and it just sets their health back too much. Or dementia and it took too much for a young adult to care for their parents, when they are trying to work their own job, possibly their own kids and assist their parents. You walk up to a guy that looks exactly what you want to and he'll tell you he tells you he overshot his last growth cycle and feels too chunky and such. My arms look too big for my own taste.
It's YOUR objectives and yeah, hearing encouragement is cool but the fire comes from within. At least the one that counts.
Personally I'd get you exercising . I have a small frame (1.70m) and everytime I see a stickarms longboi all I think is "get some muscle there you'll look SICK". Even if that's what you are aiming for, with some cardio I bet you can keep your current weight but look much better, essentially a body recomp. That's something BMI won't tell you, if you haven't done exercise in 5+ years you can't compare to some dude that is active and has your same BMI. Not to tell about body shapes and all that. I'm a bit over 25 BMI but it's 12-15% body fat, which does look fit, not shredded but ok.

I just don't think that this sort of 'advice', the ridiculing and bullying, is going to help any obese person to be honest. Obesity comes from a lot more than just laziness. It can come from mental illness and a slew of other horrible things. Obese people are often going through a lot and the last thing they need is their extra body mass barring them from making friends and meaningful relationships. Obesity can easily be considered a form of eating disorder, it's not always starving yourself but relying on food for comfort.
Personally, I think people should keep their rudeness to themselves. The only people that should comment on their health is their loved ones and their doctor. Telling someone their ugly and fat, or whatnot, isn't advice. You don't care about them if you're a stranger so you can't expect them to take your words as advice. They're human beings that are just heavier, and their health isn't your problem. If you want to help someone who's suffering with obesity be kind to them, treat them like a bloody human being. When they know you better then you can dictate what they should be eating and doing with their lives.

asmon talked about fat shaming helping someones physical health at the expense of someones mental health. yeah i lost 55kgs after finishing school because i got made fun of for being fat. yeah i had to seek therapy bc i developed an eating disorder and became depressive with a tendency to act out in a self destructive way, but hey, my bmi wasnt almost 40 anymore.

@@oACDCo Yes, many homeless people are considered degenerates for good reason and asmon described himself the same way.
