How do I get the filter out without the cap being on it???? My husband usually does this but he recently passed away and I found a new cap in the drawer. I figured out how to put it on the new filter via your video but I can't get the old filter out. Please help.

Thanks for watching, sorry to hear about your husband. That’s not easy.
We appreciate you reaching out to us. You can carefully press the quick-release mechanism that the cap fits onto.
You may need to apply a good amount of friendly inward pressure for the filter to release.

I'm sure I could have figured this out in 5 seconds but I watched your video just to be safe. It was a five-second project. Great simple presentation!
I would add that if your refrigerator is not very new or if it's been an excessively long time since the water filter was replaced, have some old towels and paper towels at the ready. The filter cartridge might have a hard time releasing when the button is pressed, or the new cartridge might have difficulty engaging when it is pushed into place. When this happens make sure it is aligned correctly (lettering and #3 on filter pointing straight up) and push extra hard. If it is only partially (but not fully) engaged, the button to the left will not pop-out and a large puddle may emerge from under the fridge.

A few additional items that I keep on my checklist:
    1. Flip up the 'full' detector in your icemaker to prevent any water from the new filter getting into your ice before it's flushed.
    2. Flush 4-5 gallons of water through the filter before using it. Water straight out of an unflushed filter is not safe to drink.
    3. While you're down there with the filter... Pull off the lower skirt where the filter is, and vacuum the coils under the fridge. Dust impedes its efficiency.

Good morning, we are drinking our morning coffee answering any and all questions for the DIY community.
This is more common than you think. Most people have shared that by adding a bit more inward pressure on release-button may be all it needs.
If the filter currently installed is not the perfect compatible replacement size, it may be jammed and will need that extra friendly pull.

Thanks for the follow up, we recommend contacting both a local plumber as well as a local Whirlpool technician to get a few quotes.
In most cases, the Whirlpool/appliance technician will be a bit more expensive but will be better familiar with getting that old filter out and a new one installed.

Thanks for the reply, are you referring to amount of inward pressure on button or filter price?
Inward pressure limits are tough because you want to get it out…but also not damage anything. Filters on average cost between $30-$60.
If it’s still jammed, you may want a friend that’s familiar with plumbing to help…or contact a technician.

You really don’t need the filter cap at all so you’ll still hear the click without it, the only purpose of the cap is for making it easy to remove the water filter.
Just press the eject button down all the way and pull the filter out.
If it’s stuck then you might need to hold the button down while you’re trying to pull the filter out, you could also try using pliers or a screwdriver to try and get a grip on it.

Hey what’s up, a special thanks to you for taking the time out of your Thursday afternoon to share this comment, it means the world to us.
It’s normal for a new filter to have an ever-so-slightly less flow of water. This is because a brand new filter needs to be broken-in a bit.
However, if it’s been a day or two, and you are still experiencing slow water flow, that’s not normal.
Did you install the exact same replacement model filter as was previously installed? If water shutoff valve was closed, ensure it is now in the full open position.

One thing not mentioned after you install the new filter you have to purge out the new filter to remove all the air....Use a largest glass you can get into the water dispenser and get some water it'll pop a lot of air make note to turn the water off at a half glass of water. Sometimes even though you stopped filling the glass the air and water will continue for up to 5 more seconds over filling the glass if you turn it off at the full glass level...The water might be black and nasty at first purge out 5 - 10 cups till the flow is smooth and clean. Then push in your reset button 5 times rapidly to reset change filter light. While your in the mood take off the lower black foot guard around the filter and clean out your Cooling lines for the chiller section below. By keeping this area clean your refrigerator will get cooler faster and save the life of the compressor and safe on your power bill also. I do not have the black cap for my filter and I always push the button in and have to tenderly take a screw driver flat head and lightly pry out the filter....

Thanks for the reply. By chance did the filters sit outside in cold weather momentarily prior to being installed.
Just like new reverse osmosis filters, cold-weather can destroy the filters and membrane which leads to them being faulty before ever been installed for the first time.

@@DIYwithMichaelBorders I got the filter last night and sure enough, the one you linked to went right in. So the off brand ones are useless. I've subscribed to get one of yours every six months, so I don't have to fuss with it anymore. Thank you for being so helpful!

My original filter didn't have a cap so therefore I don't have a cap at all. Is that okay?

Thanks for watching & it should be fine. As long as the filter is fully secured into position & installed correctly.

My cap is not on the filter inside the fridge- any chance it can still get removed?

Okay so I have this exact same fridge. The filter is completely stuck and the eject button doesn’t work. Like, I try to push it and it won’t even engage. I am at a complete loss here. Does anyone know what I should do???

Ok same here! I just took off the bottom grill face and used a screwdriver to gently pry the filter out you have to jiggle it a little back and forth to get it to move then it eventually popped out. Make sure to clean all the lint off the coils to right while you are it it!! Mine was full!!

shouldn't we run about 4 gallons of water through the new filter system prior to drinking?

What happens if you don’t have the black piece? I just moved into a rental and the black cap is gone. I tried inserting the filter anyway and water started coming out?

      Good morning ☕️ any update?
The cap will just cover filter and release-button mechanism. It won’t be needed for the full operation of unit however it adds the extra layer of protection to filter and button as well as a more attractive presentation.
After project, did you turn water valve back to the full open configuration?
