When I met my husband I thought he was a mute lol. People still ask me if he is a mute. He's not, he's just shy. But he at least MADE the effort to show me he was interested. I had a date once that went delulu soooo quickly she literally almost killed us both.
Was set up with this girl in my early 20, and went out on a date with her. The date was fine, nothing special and not horrible. She seemed interested enough we already said we’d see each other again. I was driving her back home on this dark curvy road going around 60 kmh.
Suddenly she reached for the hand brake and pulled hard, we screeched and swerved to a frightening stop. I was in shock and perplexed, and thought I must have almost hit someone, I mean there must be some reasonable explanation for someone to out of the blue reach and pull the hand brake mid drive.
Nope I was wrong, she said it was a test and she wanted to see how I acted under stress.
I immediately ordered her to exit my vehicle and Told her I wanted to see how she reacts under stress and she can find her own way home now.

OMG, the amount of anxiety it gave me for Charlotte to ask whether you should be bringing pepper spray on online dates. You should always have self defense on you as a woman, period. But ESPECIALLY when meeting a stranger. That absolutely terrifies me that women are meeting these people without any self defense plan whatsoever.
Unfortunately in Canada it is illegal to carry things like pepper spray however, you can always carry a small can of hairspray. Someone did some research and responded to me that it is legal to carry a knife in Canada however, my concern would be that he might overpower you and take the knife away from you and use it on you but I would definitely use the hairspray
Context is important-It's illegal in some places (like Canada) so you just can't have it. So her response makes sense. If you are legally able to Carry it, then bring it. Always meet in public/busy places and be aware of your surroundings and always have an emergency excit plan.

I've been married to my husband for almost 40 years and one of the things I like the best about him is that he understands my obscure jokes, double entendres, etc. And he always has, right from the beginning. Oh yeah, he has a degree in music, and he knew all the words to all the songs from my fair lady. That clinched it for me. ❤

I have so many nightmare first date stories. There's the guy who tried to molest me in a movie theater (I still think he hasn't found his balls 20+ years later from as hard as I kneed him), the guy who ditched me 15 miles from my house with no way for me to get home, the guy who ate like a beaver and kept smacking his lips. The list goes on and on. 99.9% of the reason why I just decided to stay single. Much less stressful for sure. 🤣
I became single in my early 40's after many years of marriage and learned quick that the "new" way of meeting people was online dating. I could do 2 hour video full of hysterically bad first dates 😂 I often got, "oh wow, you look just like your pictures!" This puzzled me at first! Of course I do, I took pictures and posted them (I learned later that many people use old photos or filters). Which, lucky for them I have manners because I can't tell you how many times I wanted to reply, "um, but you don't!". Appearances are not the most important thing to me, HOWEVER, men NOTORIOUSLY slam women for doing this, yet it was my experience that the majority of men did it! Yikes! 😂

Yes, I also divorced at 40. I've been single 3 years now, just started dating again last year. Dating after 10 yrs is being married is mind boggling. I think they post pics from 10 yrs ago, or lie about their age. I talk to 40-50ish. And they usually turn out to be 5-10 years older. I deleted all my dating apps. One guy wanted me to poop on him, another guy screamed at me over FaceTime for taking two seconds to respond to his text instead of one second, a girl pretended to be gay just to “make friends”, 5 pretty trans women ghosted me, and another guy sent me creepy voicemails of him breathing into the phone. Some stories remind me of my personal experience: I met a girl with whom I exchanged a few messages.When we set up a date and time I barely hear from her (but this is something I notice: Some people don't message until the actual date to still have subjects to talk about). She lived in a town 40 minutes away. On the date we walk through the city and I am asking questions and she just replies by listing her answers and only asks "And what about you?" Then after about 30 minutes she suddely says: "Sorry but I want to be alone. I have some business to do in the city. It was great meeting you" and hugged me at the end. I was confused but: OK. The same night she said that she likes me and said sorry it ended abrupt, as she is barely in the city. A day or so later she messaged me. I replied the same day or the day after with a question. She replied ... 2 months later says to my question: "I don't remember, it was so long ago." I guess you can imagine that I never met her again.
In my opinion, being afraid of not having subjects to talk about is a huge red flag! How could she handle a relationship?

The worst date I ever had was with a guy who took me to a bar where his ex girlfriend was the bartender and they proceed to get into a fight and he walked out leaving me there. My good friend talked me into going out with him on a second date and he took me to see the Exorcist where he literally laughed through the whole movie. He was funny so I agreed to go out with him on a third date...42 years later we are still married

i once went on a date with a dude when I was living in S Korea and it was the comically terrible. he spent the entire time talking about himself but not even in a flattering way? like telling me all about how he lost a bunch of money in the stock market because he didn't know what he was doing lol. he then proceeded to berate me about my hobbies and how i didn't do enough and was 'lazy' because i didn't do any clubs or sports after work. i also distinctly remember him saying that if we'd met earlier, we'd be married already (!)

I'm a semi-redneck from Texas, but not in the racist intolerant way 😉. Most Texans are cool, kind people, they just don't tend to make the news like the ones who embarrass us!
I had pepper spray on my keychain and made sure it was noticeable on a first date. I also carry a knife in my pocket, but that's mostly so I've always got some tools handy. It's helped me in so many unexpected occasions! Like the time I went camping and no one thought to bring a can opener. I used my Swiss Army knife and the P-38 I keep on my keychain. Heck, I could have used the pepper spray to season the burgers! (JK)
In my 20s, me and friends spent a lot of time at the lake and there were many opportunities to need a tool, like when Bubba got a hook caught in his arm. Never used the pepper spray. I think my tomboy redneck personality was enough to make me too unappealing for a guy to try anything.

For me these men that don't talk on the 1st date are actually thinking they're flexing, being mysterious, following some shitty guide on "how to conquer women by being difficult" but in reality we just like spontaneous funny guys who treats us like human beings.
After a few bad dates, I got to the point where when a date was going south, I would just do a mental check in and leave. You can ask any waitress for a check for items and pay away from the awkward date. At that point, they'll even help you escape 😊😂
I had 2 online dates that we chatted for about a week and seemed to get along great. When we went out, he wanted to go to the movies, both times. After the movie, he said goodnight. One I dated was a really shy guy and was really interested in hearing what I had to say, but did not really put much in about himself although I asked so many questions, he'd just give short answers. On the second date he got better so I thought he'd just open up, he was a nice guy in general. 3 months go by, I'm sick of of him saying what they had for lunch in the office instead of learning anything about his personality or values and I break it off. The same thing happened to me 😂. I suggested we go to a bougie spot that was still walking distance from my place. He was on his phone and really short with our conversation.
I thought he was maybe just nervous, so I took him to a dive bar to play pool and have a beer.

After one beer I went home.

Got to be honest, hearing people talk about the state of modern dating and how abysmal it all is makes me two things: 1) grateful I found the one early, and got married right out of college before online dating became the norm, and 2) considering the possibility that cultures that did arranged marriages…may have been on to something. 😂

1) Insanity is useful if you use it correctly.
2) First dates with someone one doesn't know are best done meeting at a very public place.
3) I want the glitter pepper spray. I'm 58 and married so dating is not my issue but the idea of someone who had bad intentions walking around with a face full of glitter really pleases me. And if this stuff becomes common, people will know that a person with a glitter face probably just tried to commit a crime.
4) if the accomplice had accused me of being crazy I probably would have looked at him with my best crazy eyes and grin and said "yeah, I am, you wanna see how much?"
One time a guy asked me on a date to the movies, I believe I was 14. We were seeing a horror movie, and I hate scary movies. He stood me up, so I watched it alone. I had an anxiety attack in the theater. Fun times!

In some environments when using traditional pepper spray the user can be affected by the spray as well, due to small spaces or wind blow back, etc. Pepper spray GEL comes out in a more viscous form (like a spicy silly string) so while your precision has to be a bit more accurate to be effective, you have much less chance of being inadvertently sprayed as well. 🖤⚔️ Get home safe, love all y’all.

We agreed to meetup at a neutral location. Firstly, he lied about his height… a LOT. First red flag. Like if you lie about something THAT obvious… what else you lying about? Then he refused to let me drive myself or myself and him. Demanded he drive the both of us. Red flag 2. During the date he stared at me like i had horns, zero convo. Still no clue wtf that was about. Finally the date ended, and while he chatted with me for the next week online, nothing about subsequent dates until 4pm on a friday asking me if i wanted to hang out at 6. I, in a burst of confidence tell him i already had plans, and he launches into “you are a bish, you lying wh0re… etc”

My horror story comes thanks to Bumble as well. We taught our daughters, now 23 & 25, to ALWAYS drive themselves to a restaurant or cinema for a date. They also got their first mace key chain in secondary school. Santa puts a new one in their stocking each year. Now that the 23 year old is a card carrying CCW with a beautiful pew pew, as well as a black belt, we don’t worry about her. The oldest is another story altogether! Scary.

My own story many years and many dates ago:
I was going on a date with a girl who I'd met while out and about. I was getting a tongue piercing at the time (was a phase for me); "Jennifer" happened to be there getting a tattoo with her bestie. I stepped out to smoke (I've since quit) and she joined me and we chatted a bit. We both go back in and do our thing, and when I came back out, she had waited to exchange numbers. So I was going to call her the next day and see when she might like to go out; she called me that evening instead. We talked back and forth several times through the week.
We both loved to dance, but she lived well north of Dallas, and I lived in the suburbs south of Dallas. Our first "date", we agreed to meet at the club as her friends were going there that night too. No problem. A lot of dancing and some drinking; I was driving, so I limited myself to two drinks and nothing after midnight. We had a good time, and her friends seemed to really warm up to me as well.
Middle of the next week, she forgot her dinner (worked 2nd shift) and there were no fast food places around. I picked up diner for her and took it to her on her break. We sat and talked and laughed, and I head on home after she headed back in for work. We'd chat quite a bit throughout the week. Because of the distance and because she said she felt safe with me and I had two female roommates (a lesbian couple) that it would feel weird, we arranged for her to stay at my place for the night, and I'd drive her home Sunday. My tongue was healing from the piercing, so I assured her, as cute as she was, I wasn't doing anything (sexually) until it healed.
Saturday night, following a nice dinner, we went to the club as we both loved the club and both loved to dance. She was drinking; I again stopped at two. But I noticed she was drinking A LOT. Like a whole lot. And she'd disappear for a bit and then come back-- longer than "normal"; I just got a weird vibe but said nothing. We were all having fun. Her friends even happened to be at the club that night.
I'm a transman (FtM), and she was femme but tomboyish-- think "Sporty Spice". But after many times of heading off while dancing, I got suspicious and at one point, I got the feeling to go to the other side of the bar-- the back part where the second main bar is and the billiards, etc. Long story short, I walked up as she was exchanging numbers and handing the girl the beer I'd just bought for HER! At least she had the courtesy to look guilty and deer-in-headlights when I walked up. The other girl did too, so... guessing she knew she was there with someone else. I just looked at her and said, "Seriously?" When she stammered, "I offered to take YOU out on a date, not-- whatever the f*** this is." I told her she could catch a ride back with her friends, that I'd let them know she needed a lift, and she could come back to my home to pick up her bag the next day.
I walked through the bar to where her friends were, briefly filled them in, they looked disappointed, apologized that she had pulled that and said they'd give her a ride home. I walked out to my truck across to the next parking lot and she'd ran out to try to talk to me, apologizing, trying to get me to come back, to go grab a bite after the bar closed. I asked enough questions to figure out that girl she'd tried to pick up was going to be there too! I just started laughing openly, was shocked. She just didn't get how bad this looked and kept trying to get me to agree to take her to the restaurant afterwards with everyone, but I told her no. She asked about getting her bag, and I told her she can come pick it up tomorrow. She didn't have a car. Not my problem. Finally, I'd had way too much of her BS and just told her, "Jennifer, I don't date tacky women. Get home safely." She looked as though I had slapped her.
The next day, she'd borrow a friend's car and drove out to where I lived about an 60-75 minutes away. I'd told my roommates what happened the night before, and while I could have put her bag on the porch and let her come and go, no words, ... Nope. Petty bastard here! I made her do the "walk of shame" (past my roommates while they just glared at her) to go back, pick up the bag off my bed, NOT allow her to corner me to press me to talk further, and saw her back to the door. She didn't leave right away. So about 15 minutes later, I look out, and she's still sitting in the car. I walk out to see what the holdup is, and she tried to talk to me again. I ran thru all her misdeeds from the night before and asked her, "Did I miss anything?" She just sat there and stared at the wheel, and started with "But--" til I cut her off. "No. Like I said last night, I don't date tacky women. You need to leave now before my roommates think you're a total whack-job, and don't contact me again." I went back inside and she left a few minutes later.
After being the type that women had often walked all over because I was "too nice", that whole ordeal with her was the FIRST time I'd stood up for myself when it came to dating. I was getting to know her, so I wasn't emotionally invested. Just disappointed. But that's been a measuring stick when dating since.
Now.... my fiancee fortunately is classy, sassy, and a bit smartass-y, but tacky, she is not. 😉😏
And I was thinking while the guy waiting for the date looking for "parking", how cute and well done the Indian accents he was throwing in now and then were! Yet I wasn't sure if he was born in The US, but figured he at least had an Indian born parent. I would have loved to find out more about his background, and his quirky sense of humour😄

I had a boss back in the early 80s who was from India, and he was the best boss ever. Funny too. I went out with his visiting nephew for awhile but it was platonic. Had a great time and loved hearing him talk about his country and culture and never worrying that he was going to be creepy. He was going to be married soon to the girl he had been betrothed to since childhood. Fortunately, they knew each other well as they grew up together, and loved each other. She was gorgeous (he carried her pic) and I loved the way his eyes lit up when he talked about her.
I love the Desi accent. My boss used to exaggerate his just to get us laughing.
One day, something went wrong, not a big deal, but it was going to cost time to fix. I used a phrase my dad often said in such occasions, "Oh no! What a revolting development!".

From then on if mistakes were made, he never got mad, he'd say "We do not want any rewolting dewelopments! with a big grin.

Was asked on a date I got to restaurant an hour early and sat in booth in back I could see everything. Watch my date come in and text and call me my phone was on vibrate in my purse. I started text him back and asking him how his food is and I mentioned what he was eating. (He never told me what he was eating.) just as he was finishing I came and sat by him. 😂 We sat for another hour eating and talking. It’s been almost 15 years now and we still do the awkward date night thing and we go home talking about people’s reactions. Once he ordered all 10 different appetizers on the menu because I couldn’t make up my mind, then said to the waitress first date so she will probably not be able to make up her mind on the entree so have the cooks ready. I didn’t even order was eating appetizers and of course dessert. Life is good my favorite date is still my favorite sarcastic weird funny snoring awkward man. And he’s a wonderful dad and Papa!

Had to add for that girl with Will; don't give up! After a horrible, abusive relationship I had planned on being the cat lady but my friends set me up on a blind date that I did NOT want to go on! We sadly are way past the point of needing pepper spray. Not even just dates, even Uber drivers have been known to keep women in the cars and pass the drop off points. Human trafficking isn’t just kids…. Women are being grab walking home from work. Carry what you can to save yourself.
Also I heard someone who was familiar with this topic say fight as dirty and hard ax you can, bite, poke eyes, scream as loud as you can because if they get you in a vehicle to take you to another location you will never be seen again. You at that pony know too much and are not getting away. So fight don’t be polite don’t go along thinking it will keep you safe to obey them. It won’t. And if you do somehow get away later on the trauma you will have is not ok. So FIGHT. FIGHT.
I hate knowing how bad this world can be. I just lost my husband last year so my safe person to walk with and be with is gone. And where I had to move is by our local collage and every year so many stories of kidnapping, assault and rape. It’s real. It can happen to anyone. No matter what you look like or your age.

This! Just last year, a human trafficker tried to booby trap my sister’s car in the Walmart parking lot. This is why I plan to apply for my conceal carry permit. The reality is that a man can kill a woman with his bare hands. We must even the playing field. If I’m fighting for my life, my attacker will perish. Period. Better that than leave a predator alive who can lie about you and try to sue you for hurting them.
