Gibson Kirk Hammett "Greeny" Les Paul Standard FULL DEMO and REVIEW
John uncases, takes apart, and plays the brand new Gibson KIRK HAMMETT Greeny Les Paul Standard. Is this guitar worth the money, and can it nail that LEGENDARY TONE?
DROP A COMMENT: What Les Paul will you buy NEXT?
FROM GIBSON:
Three Legendary Guitarists, One Legendary Guitar
The story of “Greeny” is shrouded in mystery, but few guitars are as illustrious. Greeny is one of the most iconic original Les Paul Standards ever made, with a unique sound as recognizable as the guitar itself. Previously owned by Peter Green, it was used throughout his time with Fleetwood Mac and later sold to Gary Moore, who used it for three decades with Thin Lizzy and as a solo artist. Now owned by Kirk Hammett, Greeny has passed through the hands of three legendary guitarists. Its distinctive sound is partly from the out-of-phase middle switch position due to the neck pickup’s reversed magnetic polarity. The Kirk Hammett "Greeny" Les Paul Standard was inspired by this legendary guitar and gives players around the world the opportunity to experience some of the magic of "Greeny" for themselves. An Original Series hardshell case is included.

I have to say if you want to spend the money to get a Gibson Les Paul this is the one to get. Sounds awesome and the best-looking Les Paul, in my opinion. If you only have one Les Paul this should be it.
I really agree with you on yr premise..beautiful and love that out of phase middle..or a slash appetite with great flame wud be my 2 best off the rack Gibson les Paul’s…🤙🏻🎸
Probably the best tone I have heard from a Gibson is a long time!!
I'd say yes but my wallet says no...
Don’t worry there will be an Epiphone version soon enough for half that price.
@@charlesbolton8471 1,5k for an epiphone oh noooooo
I¡d say yes but my WIFE says no
why buy it? steal it
@@niekvanmeurs4060
I could be wrong. It might be $1,299 like the Adam Jones models. I just figured they would charge a premium over whatever the current highest priced Chinese Epiphone is whenever they release it.
This is pretty nice. I love a satin finish. I bet they sell very well.
Keep it up John and Zach. I always love your videos.
Great demo! Fantastic playing that really highlighted the tone of the guitar. Thanks!
I have a 50's Standard (got it when they first came out) with a gorgeous flame top and a Slash Appetite. [I have an Alpine White Custom as well.] I heard a lot of great tones here, and I love my middle positions. That's the place I play most of the time. If I was in the market for a new one, this wouldn't really add something else to what is already there, but if I didn't have one, this would definitely be in the running. Good demo, great looking guitar, awesome sound.
I appreciate your honesty/integrity in pointing people to cheaper/similar options! Always fun to watch your vids!
I appreciate that, thanks for watching!
It’s not that just the pickup is flipped, the magnet is flipped to give that out of phase sound. Simply flipping the pickups wont do it. Just so people know they can’t simply flip their humbucker and get the out of phase sound
Facts.
WOW - This was fast!
Woke up to the news, you guys already have the review.
It’s cool that you got one to review!
The top, finish (color), pickups, tuners, and all those with keeping the guitar “factory” are worth the price point IMO
Come on Gibson USA... Now it's time to make one for Jimmy Pages line up.
Love the tone. Definitely going to try and get one
Just beautiful
I love it
Outstanding review. Great playing review John
Love the look of that green LP ....great clip keep posting
Great demo 👏👏
Thanks for the control cavity shots
You bet! Thanks for watching
It’s flipping the magnet in neck pickup…not just turning the pickup around…that middle out of phase anomaly is really special though…for that Peter green need yr love so bad…great guitar …around slash Gibson territory …can’t do 20k….maybe this…..yes the les paul faded is an option you cud get after market greeny pickups and yr in…all good though..🤙🏻🎸🎸
Thanks for the review - looks good, sounds good! 100% all for the satin finish - I bought the Epiphone / Gibson 'hybrid' 1959 Standard and it's terrific. Actually considering buying a pair of Monty's Bethnal Greens for it . . . much as I'd love this one it's a bit out of my budget, but who knows? Enjoyed your playing!
Love the satin finish. Great video and excellent job on the timber! I admire your playing style. Cheers!
Very kind of you, thanks! Yes the satin feels and looks great I agree
I like the fact that Gibson introduced this "affordable" version of this guitar...but half of the appeal is the aging of the original.
this looks like my Epiphone JB Lazarus and If I switch out the knobs that would make it look even more like Greeny.
Excellent point. I also kinda view this as a fancier and more expensive "Tribute" cosmetically.
I’ve been drooling over this guitar as soon as they were released. Watched this video and decided look into the Faded you suggest. Last night I bought a Tribute.😂 Such a fun guitar. Might flip that magnet in the pickups, which are fantastic, as you stated in your Tribute vid.
Here's a counter point the topic of the pickups (which sound nice!):
Seymour Duncan released the "Green Magic" pickup set last year, and there is a great demo by Andy Demos of the set. That set is $300. No one talks about that. If someone wants a Greenie from Gibson, ok, but if someone just wants the pickups, you can get them at a much more affordable price point.
Just raising to say that there is more than simply the option from Gibson.
I love it, its sound is very good!
I got the gibson faded 50s les paul and that is a great value guitar. The satin finish is great and a very similar looking guitar. I have a vintage greeny copy for $500 and that is a really great guitar with out if phase sound. I love my gibson and my vintage is a great way for a reliced greeny les paul.
Another great video guys!
I'm in it to win it as a new subscriber, however I don't know why Gibson didn't name it "the Greeny Moore Less Paul" because Gary Moore had it the longest and made more people aware of it and he is the one that changed the knobs along with already having a Gary Moore signature Gibson at one time. Great video!
It is not about flipping the neck PU by 180 degrees. Look at the photo at 1:22. You can see Gary Moore having this PU the right way. Mostly they say that the wiring was the other way round but I have read that Gary Moore an a guitar tech found out that some of the polepieces were actually upside down. And they say that this is the case with more than one Burst out there. But who knows...
Beautiful!
With the recent price increase of the regular USA Standards, you might as well go for a Slash/Adam Jones/Greeny for basically the same price if you like the specs of one of those more.
Man I love that thing !!! I have an idea for a video....get a set of Seymour Duncan Greenies and put them in a Tribute, Standard or Traditional or even an Epiphone '59 and see how close it sounds... Also I have an ES 330 satin finish that polished up beautifully these could polish up nicely if you wanted to.... thanks for the awesome demo and review !!!
Awesome video, guys. Pick ups sounds amazing even through CZcams compression. Kinda feel they missed the mark, and it looks more like lazerus than greeny. Though I get why it has to be different, price and would ultimately devalue the last 2 iterations. That said. It's still a great looking guitar. Are the inlays acrylic or pearl?
I love it bah the tuners
I am such a big Peter Green fan, I guess I'll just have to "Shake my money maker" to get one. 😅
Who wouldn’t want one? Those pickups are amazing!
But sadly, I will be waiting to see what the Epiphone version is like.
Just seems affordable now compared to those 20k and 50k versions. Gibson mind control in effect! It makes you wonder if the CS is really worth 17k more and the Collector 47k more.
I need a Greeny!
I played one. It was heavy as hell which I like in a Les Paul and the Finish looked great! The pickups sound really good, but they made the chunky Les Paul sound thin to me.
If the one i ordered sounds as good as yours, i'll be very happy....
Mine is fantastic, with exceptional playability. the guitar is very well made. Greeny's sound is creepy it's so beautiful. I got 6 Les Pauls. 4 of Custom shop This one beats them all, 😁
I agree. I love mine too.
Oh damn! You were not joking about those pups! Sweet, thick and delicious! I'd grab a set of those in a heartbeat if they become available!
That is, without a doubt, the most sensibly priced Les Paul in decades. 3k is still a lot, but, given their pricing lately this is a good sign for the guitar market. IMHO.
Considering this is a Les Paul 50's Faded with different pickups and a $600 upcharge, I'm not sure how sensible the price is.
@@reverb508ur just cheap
@@bmark7951 tell that to my wife! 😂 Seriously though, I have no problem paying big bucks for nice instruments. I have 2 Gibson Custom Shops, a PRS, and a few boutique guitars (Novo, Frank Brothers). I just don’t think the USA Greeny justifies its price considering its practically the same guitar as a LP Faded.
what?! This guitar costs $700 more than it's direct counterparts, for a flipped pickup and two incorrect knobs.
In the 80s I bought a LP studio for $800.00 new, now they're double that. ouch!
I just watched the Trogly review of the $20K version. Has the same pickups as this one. I like this one better. I don't like fake aging.
love my 60 s paul. dont like the satin top on this one but gary is my all time favorite
I just got some SD green magics to put in my Epi LP. Looks pretty different but it’ll have those out of phase sounds!
Very good, and fair, review. I'd buy a set of those Greeny pickups to try in one of my Les Pauls, should Gibson decide to sell them.
Seymour Duncan makes one already. Custom shop Greeny buckers
Good stuff. Love to have one of those.
I have the Vintage brand greenie. I wonder how the sound is in comparison to the Gibson?
It would be interesting to know.
I would never (even if I had the money) buy a “replica” with the wear and dings like the 50k or custom iteration, but this one is pretty bad A, it looks clean and sounds fantastic. And dang, your playing was ridiculous, man! Great review!!
Fipping Awesome.
didn't think I'd like the satin.. but it looks fantastic
Just ordered mine!! I already see folks selling others on Reverb for +500$!! Sheesh
Lucky me…my 74 Standard which is completely Original came with its pickups out of Phase in the middle position…..
The middle position sounds pretty weak on clean tones when compared to the neck and bridge positions. But it does sound awesome!
4:05-4:07: “Just remember, you’ll need to leave the neck pick up flipped for full effect”.
Actually no, the magnet INSIDE the pickup is flipped 180 degrees, so that its polarity is reversed relative to the two coils of the neck humbucker (I.e the pole facing the sixth string is flipped so it faces the first string and vice-versa). THAT is what gives the out of phase sound in the middle pickup selector position, when the tone and volume are adjusted to a particular “sweet spot”. Flipping the pickup so its pole pieces face the other way without flipping the magnet has NO effect on the sound by itself. You WILL NOT get the “Greeny” OOP sound with a simple pickup flip, and even if you flip the magnet, you won’t achieve the characteristic “nasal” PG OOP tone simply by putting the selector in the middle position. In fact, I don’t mean to sound needlessly critical, but you don’t explore the OOP sound at all. This has been written about extensively, and several videos exist on YT. The flipped pickup is merely an aesthetic choice if you don’t flip the magnet itself. BTW I’ve done this on my 2022 50s Gibson Les Paul Standard Goldtop, and it’s a real easy mod. I used guidance from this video on YT:
czcams.com/video/Yy6xRGLiv_4/video.html
I have a 50s les Paul standard faded 2016 LE satin finish awesome but no flame .
This is $200 more than a Standard now, increase April 1st brought the Standard to 2999.
Love your vids ❤
I think they should have went with a lightly aged nickel on the pick up covers, bridge, and tailpiece. I think it would blend better with the satin instead of that shiny chrome. Sounds good though.
i entered this like 3 weeks ago , nice getting to 50 k
Love the videos! Just curious, it says the competition isn't available in my region. Is it not worldwide? Regardless, I'll keep watching.
Reminds me more of an epi with that finish
You got a light one, the only one I’ve seen under 9lbs. There’s one over here in England that’s over 10!
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,......... THIS IS THE Les Paul TO SAVE FOR ...............,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,............beautiful satin colors.....🎸
Definately a nice guitar I however prefer the gloss on the standard which is a few hundred less expensive than Greeny.
The figuring of Greenie's top is one of the critical elements to me. It's an interesting flame even without the fame. Not a fan of the tuning buttons... Sperzel or Grovers as on the USA models.
very cool
Two things: Needs a gloss finish. I HATE SATIN. And I'd turn that neck pickup right around because I HATE the out of phase tone but I really dig the regular two humbucker middle position tone. Do those two changes and you've got a Les Paul I'd actually be happy to buy.
The neck profile is more akin to the Standard 50's because the $50k and $20k custom shop Greeny's are bigger.
I will like to try these against the appetite of destruction against the jimmy telecaster mim :/
Congrats on 48k!! Onward and upward to that 50k!! 🥳🎉🎈🎊🍾🪅🥂
Ok Gibson. It’s time for a replica The Fool SG. Let’s go !
subbed!
Wait for 🎄🎅 (long wait)...
Listening to Kirk talk about the real ‘Greenie’ allowed me to save loads of money buy used damaged guitars. Joe Bonamassa said you have to decide if your a collector or a player. I’m a player, not very good but. So if it plays and I can save some cash I’ll buy it.
Hope I win! nice review just bought one after watching the vid keep up the good work.
Very cool and interesting John !!
But how did you get that LP before Trogly ?? 😅
Magnets are flipped not the flip pickup..doesn't get out of phase.
Correct I should have stated that, thanks!
Looks like more an epiphone version of the greeny.
Cool
Thanks for the video!! Please, Does it have a long neck tenon, or is it just like a regular 50’s model?
Regular 50s, thanks for watching!
As long as Hammetts name isn’t on any of the case candy, otherwise I’d have to burn that!
I'm going to wait for the Epiphone version.
🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼
Is it a Rosewood fret board or is Indian Rosewood?
I subscribed. How do I enter the Les Paul custom shop giveaway you mentioned?
The pickups don’t go out of phase just because you flip the pickup. I don’t understand why people think that it does.
Absolutely correct, I'm always amazed how people who know far more than I do, think it does 😮
A very very beautiful sounding guitar, however, I really don't like the satin finish, it reminds me of a cheap entry level studio model, and I really begrudge Kirk Hammett's name being added and Gary Moore's name being removed. Gary Moore owned it for over 40 years!
😍🤘🏻
Spend your money on what you want, but this is an R9 with a set of pickups that every…and I mean EVERY winder/pickup company offers
Great playing! Any cool case candy or just standard stuff?
Just standard stuff, thanks for watching!
Flipping the pickup 180 dog does not give the out of phase sound
Correct, left out that the magnets are flipped. Thanks!
Wowza! Not a toy.
47.9!!k
The fact that it's called The Kirk Hammett Greenie is pretty sad
I agree. Has he done any recordings with it?
the guitar got its name because of the people who owned it and played it...now that happens to be Kirk. I've seen him live with it and it was the highlight of the show, it just sounds great.
I’ll never associate greeny Les paul with him..he just bought it the soul playing of green/Moore he doesn’t posses..Hence Gibson had to pay him..to get the rights to the production…so…but it’s Greeny/Moore to me ..great looking sounding Les paul
Agreed.
@@craig1474 In the making of Hardwired videos he is seen on a few different songs playing it in the studio...cant tell you if those clips make it on the record though. And I would guess the same for the new album.
Did he say his name was John Nutsack?
Only way id have a Les Paul is if I win one lol
One or two-piece mahogany back?
Best review, you can play metal with this guitar?
Thank you, and yes you definitely can!
What amp/pedals is this thru?
The main performance is a Fender Deluxe Reverb with a Tubescreamer, thanks for watching!
