  • Learn how to install the Sheffield Metals HR1 standing seam metal roof standard hip / ridge detail from start to finish in this video tutorial.
    **********************************
A standard hip or ridge flashing bridges two adjoining roof planes by locking onto z-closures at the end of each panel. In this video, Jason from the Sheffield Metals Technical department demonstrates how to install the Sheffield Metals HR1 standard hip / ridge detail. For conditions that require venting capabilities, please refer to the SMI VR1 vented ridge detail.

Please note the installation details and methods shown in this video are for reference only. Sheffield Metals recommends following their published installation details or for WTW projects following the required details issued and marked approved for that specific project.

I would love it if you guys did more complicated metal details. Most people know how to install this if they have decent guidance, plus y’all have other videos on this exact installation. Subjects like what to do on a valley return. On what to do when when a rake meets an eve on a valley. That’s what us metal roofers need more guidance on!

More content on tie-ins and things like that? Noted! Thanks for the feedback! -Thad

I think it would be fantastic if you could do a video like this for every detail in your installation manual, and then organized it (maybe even link to CZcams from the manual). It would be such a great resource for people to be able to pull up the installation manual and then instantly go to a video that shows the detail (a video can show so much more than a manual can).

Completely unnecessary(and aesthetically terrible) to bend any ridge cap 4" down the face of a rake. If make your rakes meet properly 1" or even down to a peen over would more than suffice and look much better and keep all rivets on top. I generally don't even use rakes, longer face drip, roll form a hem, squeeze the hem to the drip up the rake. This then allows you to box the end of the z bar to hook and hem the cap as well. Much better and cleaner.

The detail remains the same on a hip even though we're demonstrating a ridge install. The termination of the hip flashing at the end of the run will be slightly different as well, but that is installer preference. -Thad
