How Far Will Your Paint Pen Go? Testing Air-Dry Metal Roof Paint Pens
How long will a metal roofing touch-up paint pen last and how many linear feet can it paint?
**********************************
An air-dry touch-up paint pen is designed to apply paint to very small scratches or cut edges of painted metal roofing and wall panels, but how long will one last? In this video on the Metal Roofing Channel, Thad Barnette tests how many 12-inch lines can be painted before the pen runs out. Note that because this is not a typical installation method, your results may vary.
You should ONLY use paint specifically designed for air-dry metal roofing applications.
Please note the installation methods shown in this video are for reference only. Sheffield Metals recommends following manufacturer's instructions for installation. Areas utilizing touch-up paint is not covered by the manufacturer's paint warranty.

New 50-YEAR Sheffield Metals Galvalume® Warranties!
Exposed fastener metal roofs survived hurricane Ian in Cape Coral, Florida where Ian stalled right off of Sanibel Island and pounded Sanibel, Ft. Myers Beach, Pine Island and Cape Coral for hours and hours before it finally moved just north of us and officially came ashore south of Punta Gorda, Florida. According to FEMA snap lock metal panel roofs are the worst performers in hurricanes when they inspect roofs after a hurricane cane. There are many examples of snap lock panel metal roof failures after hurricanes and even mechanical seam metal roof failures after hurricanes. Exposed fastener metal roofs have more attachment points and they are the easiest to check to make sure they have enough fasteners installed. Hidden fastener metal roofs are hard to determine if they have proper attachment points and let's face it there are many roofing companies that do not install metal roofs properly taking short cuts to increase profit.
We live in Atlantic Canada. Damp and wet and boat loads of snow. Our camp has had Metal. Right on the shingles for Decades. We left the ends open and the cap has room for air flow. We also have solar panels on the roof and a wind mill. It's been great for 20 years. We haven't had any of the issues these people are talking about. The roof is light grey to reflect the heat. We also have a solar heater box that we use a sheet of the same color. To cover in summer. A light grey roof will reflect the heat.
Can you give a suggestion about how to find a profession that knows how to paint a residential metal roof that has rust?
Would laugh if this channel actually chose Shingles as the entire winner :)
my problem is noisy when it rains and animals walking on roof
For those of us who are perplexed - Sheffield Metals makes their own ink pens and this is what he is testing.
Could this be used on a car?
The paint pen I used is made for metal roofing and walls, but car manufacturers usually make paint pens that are specific for their vehicles as well. -Thad
czcams.com/video/6GsdAYyY_RA/video.htmlsi=pl0suDzAbhL5lPja there is a lot of sealant on my roof
thx
Just stop using smooth metal, textured metal is the only metal i work with, check with your suppliers, you can walk it on 8/12 an it dont oil can
I will install metal on my home no matter what. No matter what.
Im only here because Little John keeps building houses out of it, and wanted to know how realistic it is. Thanks for the informative video
caulking plus tape on the bottom?
Excellent stuff bro
thank you I appreciate this information. I live in Georgia. It rains really hard and most of the houses we have purchased. The roof doesn’t seem to be a sound as we like going into our forever home worst but thinking about switching over to a metal roof
Omg ,, too long to get it the point ..
does old dude use an oil can as microphone?
Those are awesome
We are in the process of building a barn and just noticed the horrible look of the barn with all the waviness. We asked the owners of the company to come and look at it, and I was horrified when we were basically told there was nothing we can do. We are incorporating the barn into the outside living part of our home, and I am devastated. We can't move the barn or the house (septic and water and electrical already in)---and we now get to look at the side of a barn that looks like a million soft balls were thrown into the side of it.
Had a metal roof put on my roof last year. I had the Amish put it on and if you know anything about these people, they are the most meticulous with what they do than any contractor I have ever worked with and could not be happier with the end result!
Thad, I have a specific technical question about the soffit, facia, and metal roofing interface. I’ll send your team an email.
Sounds good, thanks! -Thad
They never heard of using head wall flashing, and Z-bar, the ugliest chimney flushing ever
Where can I buy the materials in New Jersey for a New tech machine.?
Sheffield Metals has a great rep in that area and can ship you materials from the Cleveland, Ohio location. Drop them a line here: sheffieldmetals.com/contact/ -Thad
Why are they kissed so far onto the backup drum. Wouldn’t that have a chance of stalling out the roll and putting cuts and wear lines in the roll?
When it comes to physical testing he dosnt have a clue.
Is the coravent also installed at the roof rakes?
It is disappointing that they do not sell to homeowners
Excellent video, perfect questions and answers, thanks!
Sadly, I don't think the skill level, professionalism and attention to detail shown in this video is the norm. You see this all the time, someone who knows the right people or has the right amount of money can get excellent jobs like this done, but when the rest of us around the country want a job done, its rushed, still costs us ton of money and looks like crap: corners being cut the entire time. Seems the more rural you live, the choices are pretty slim to find contractors, much less a contractor or business who know what they are doing. My sister just sent me pics of her metal roof she had done and it looks awful. Jagged cuts, screws and nails visible everywhere, nothing is seamless and goes into the next piece, open pieces hanging all over the edge, no cohesiveness. By the way, what adhesive caulk are you using?
Thank you for this.
Great info thank you. Can you use any of these panels on a batten-type roof structure either steel or timber? I'm looking at building a Barndominium.
For me,way too much $$$. However, if you own a million dollar home( I do not),I can see doing it.
The only issue I have is the wood 1x4s. They rot. At minimum I would water seal them but I like to rip down 1xX composite boards and use them for the air gap.
What about butyl over sealant?
I can't seem to find a video on how to make a center starter for a snaplock panel. Is it possible to manufacture it by hand after the panel is run or do you need the machine to do it? Any help would be appreciated.
ty
Awesome sir
In Ph, it's akin to plain GI sheet, the only difference is that galvalume is in rolled sheets. We only use this mostly on exterior walls or wooden doors as a protective material during wet seasons (but could be taken as permanent though😁). I think it's not suitable for roofing here...
You see a lot of metal sheeting roofing right on top of the purlins attached to the trusses with no vapor barrier at all.
How can I make my own cleansing solution cause I can't get the cleansweep where I live
Check out this video to see how to clean your metal roof with household ingredients: bit.ly/cleaning-a-metal-roof-video -Thad
The lady in the video is TOTALLY disinterested. Also, I'm not sure why the expert guest speaking failed to mention 40 # felt? It's been out almost as long as 30# felt. What was the warranty on the other two shark products?
19/32 OSB?
Closed Cell Foam under roof sheeting, Peel & Stick on top of roof sheeting, air gap then metal roofing, and an ERV unit. 100%
Wow this is an amazing install video and I admire the craftsmanship. Several questions. The bottom end of the panel? What does the install guide say about dog earing or filing the open area with sealant? The pipes. Wouldn’t sliding those metal covers over them create an ever so small area water could get in from?
Neat. I'm getting a 26 gauge standing seam roof in a month. The guy mentioned getting striated panels to hide the appearance of this. I didn't know it was a thing. Thanks for the little education lesson!
Absolutely! Good luck with your project! -Thad
Can you make a video on how to install radiant barrier and roll on insulation? Which one goes on first and the detail steps to it.
