My family has had Berners for 20-plus years. They are very loveable. The cost for a pure bread Berner is expensive up to 3 thousand dollars. Medical expenses can be an issue. They tend to overeat and safe exercise after age 12 is essential in my opinion. If you were to get a Berner I would suggest not getting a male unless you are looking for more of a guard dog in my opinion. Males can be more difficult to train. We have had 4 Berner dogs 2 males and 2 females. They had lived from 8 to 10 years. The males often like to take long walks without the rest of us as often as possible. They seem to mellow out after 2 years.
I miss having them around but I couldn't afford a dog that size. I personally think they have the neatest personalities. Very powerful dogs and some people may still use them for pulling wagons.
As far as anxiety goes, if you are planning to have someone train the dog as a service dog for anxiety then cool but other than that i would not suggest this dog for helping with anxiety. One thing is for sure they don't do much with inactive families, but when there is something that is different they will let you know. The youngest dog which is 3 years old now barks at the golfers in the backyard. There is 4 different-sized Bernese. 2 100 plus pound dogs 1 with long hair and the biggest one which is the Swiss with short hair. 2 smaller dogs under 75 lbs. The female Bernese are much more mellow. Living in colder regions is a huge plus for them I feel. They have heavy 2-layerr coats. If someone was to buy a dog based on personal anxiety issues then I would suggest reading up on dog breeds capable of handling anxiety in adults.
At any rate, they are working dogs for sure that is what they were bred for in Europe. I am assuming you want a mellow dog? I have similar anxiety thoughts but I would like a Karelian bear dog or a Stabyhoun. As I often go camping alone where bears and mountain lions roam. It is wise for me to have a dog around and a friend when going camping. Something that never crossed my mind when i was younger.
My brother on the other hand thinks I should get a basset hound. Lol
My best to you and your search for the right dog for your needs and abilities.

I don’t know if this would help anyone but I am very allergic to golden retrievers everyone I’ve ever met however I’m not allergic to Bernese Mountain dogs as I’ve babysat one 4 to 5 days a week for a few years. Naturally my heart goes to the BMD. I’ve never seen a more loving Sweet funny caring dog. If he does something that makes you laugh he will remember and will repeat it. Every time I took him for a walk, every time, someone would stop me and tell me how beautiful he was and I even had people stop their car in the street put down their windows and say the exact same thing how beautiful he was. Obviously either the golden and the Berner would be great choices for you and your family, don’t let its short lifespan deter you, they will be the best years you’ve ever had with an animal.

I have a 7 month old bernese puppy so I may be biased but I’d pick a bernese over a golden retriever any day. They fit my lifestyle perfectly. And yes they are def watchdogs. My pup never barked until about 5 months old. Now he uses his bark powers to let me know when someone is by my door or near my home in general. Since I live alone I personally appreciate it. Berners might not hold onto to toys for long but they will hoard all of your socks. Overall 10/10 would recommend.

Our Berner girl will be 3 yo in a couple of days. She's a total sweetheart, who sheds something awful all the time. Walks on leash are not so much fun because she wants to sniff every blade of grass or leaf as we go. 15-20 minutes just to go around the block minimum. Does much better in off leash areas. Otherwise, great big fluffy wonderful gal.

Hi I have owned both breeds. My retriever lived to be 14 years. His biggest problem was that he was a wanderer. No matter what training, if he was left unchained, he was gone. I presently have a 7 year old Bernese Mtd dog. I should note that I am 67 years old. Other than the shedding factor, I would rate my Bernese at 110%. He is incredibly talented in changing his disposition to mask mine. He will lay sedate or in the next instant enjoy a quick fight. The only trouble we have is he has claimed ownership of the passenger seat of my 1972 MGB. LOL

What IS that thing @5:22 (&7:05)?!? Certainly not a Berner!! (nor Appenzeller or Entlebucher)… BTW, it's pronounced "Bear-ner/Bear-nese," not "Bur-ner/Bur-nese" (From the Canton of Bern [also pronounced "Bearn"], Switzerland).
I'd call the 6-8 year lifespan prediction a bit pessimistic, though, as they mentioned, it depends a lot on the breeder. All of ours (8-9 over the last 30+ years) lived to at least 10, except the first (only 7) and yes, they did all die of some sort of cancer: mostly lymphoma or soft tissue tumors.
Also, biggest difference between the breeds is in family relationships: I've known a number of Golden Retrievers-I would describe them as "devoted," but Berners are more like "NEEDY." Unless you have someone in the house nearly all the time, your Berner may become neurotic and destructive. One night we went out to a party for ~6 hours on a night that wasn't "on the schedule" and came home to the kitchen trash pulled out of the can, brought into the center of the living room, ripped apart and spread evenly all over the floor. There were kitchen food scraps in there and he never touched any of it that we could see-just punctuating his disapproval of our absence. Another of our Berners could never get the hang of scratching at the door to let us know she wanted in. One night we forgot and left her out all night-next morning we found she had uprooted and shredded all the bedding plants my wife had spent the whole previous day planting in the flower bed-no other damage in the yard. My mother had one (a rescue) that wouldn't even let her go to the bathroom in peace. This time we bought 2 litter mates-they seem good company for each other and we're hoping our extended family (5 adults/4 children) will suppress any tendency to attach to a specific person-so far, so good, but we'll see how it goes (they just turned 6 months old)…

can you give me some advice? i'm thinking about bernese or golden, still on research, probably will get a dog next year, live alone in a apartment, in a hot country, i've talked to bernese and golden breeders, both have told me that living in a aparment is "ok" if i take them out regularly, i was specially concerned about bernese in the hot weather (in hottest days it goes from 25ºC to 35ºC, coldest days goes from 15ºC to 25ºC), the breeder told me "it was ok because they're born in the hot weather and got used to it, but i would need some special cares like cold wather, cold fruits and AC on hotter days".
Can you give me any advice?

    • @heymikeyh9577
      @heymikeyh9577 Před 3 lety

@@veccher wow-only gets down to 15°C in winter?!? I must say our summers are similar (unofficial record here is ~48°C), however, and our Berners do fine in front of their favorite AC vent. The big problem is exercise, which you certainly shouldn’t do >30°C (maybe even >25°-opinions?). For us this means either waiting til 1:00AM or getting up at 5:00AM for their walks. We’ve found an alternative outing in "shopping trips" to dog-friendly, air-conditioned stores (actually, walk around the store for an hour, then feel guilty and buy something). They’re pretty lazy indoors and probably wouldn’t demand daily walks, but their health would certainly suffer-they tend to have big appetites and pack on the pounds…
The biggest difference between the breeds is having someone with them most of the day: being gone at work 8 hr/day won’t cut it with a Berner-they’re far too needy of their people. Living alone, you’d probably have to work at home, have a job that allows dogs, or arrange for a sitter. They can be very destructive left alone for long periods. That would be my main concern in your situation.
      Best of luck!
PS-our pups are closing in on 10 months old and 50 kg (!)
