The Bernese Mountain Dog is a breed that is built for doing hard work. It is big, powerful, and strikingly beautiful with its tri-color coat. Most dogs will have a white chest and striping from their forehead to their muzzle, accompanied by white paws, brown forelegs, and a dark body for their coat. Many of them have a spot of brown above their eyes that makes it look they have eyebrows.
This dog can be fiercely protective of its property and people, but it is also a sweet animal that is highly affectionate and wants lots of snuggles. As with most large dogs, the Bernese Mountain Dog thinks that it can fit on your lap at any given time. You will find them wanting to snuggle just as much as they want to romp around outside or take a long walk.
You will always find an intelligent gleam in the eye of this breed. They are very gentle with children who are part of their family, often choosing to attach themselves to a single person above all others. Berners can look imposing, but they are rarely threatening unless they feel threatened for some reason. Most maintain an aloofness when around strangers that is so overexaggerated that it can generate a laugh.
If you are thinking about having a Bernese Mountain Dog join your family, then these are the pros and cons you will want to review.

I have had three Bernese. I still celebrate my first Berners birthday, she was born in May 1986 and euthanized in December 1995 due to the cancer. This breed is like a dream of very fine home dog, intelligent, kind and beautiful.
Now I am an 65 yrs old man and when my time comes, I'm going to see her in the other side of the bridge, with all my beloved cats...

My Berner Sennenhund lived to 12 and was the best friend I ever had. I think about her all the time and miss her terribly. For me this is the best breed

The biggest problem of health and therefore of logevity of this formidable dog, came from the part of inescropulosos breeders on both sides of the Atlantic, when this dog became fashionable. Many breeders gave in to easy profits and neglected the selection of good healthy breeding stock.
Fortunately, several serious associations intervened quickly.
For my part, I have always had Berneses, their longevity has been between 11 to 12 and a half years, their origins are from certified breeders.

My Bernese mountain dog only reached the age of 7 years old like most in The Netherlands. It broke my heart to euthanase the dog. We had no choice because cancer was eating away one of his front paws.

I had an Irish wolfhound that lived for 7 yrs. That dog made me not care for the lifespan. It doesn't make me not make me not want to get them, because I will not love them any less, and I will see them again some day

"There is arguably no other breed that is more intelligent than the Bernese Mountain Dog" - apart from the fact that we've measured the intelligence of dogs and the Border Collie is proven to be the most intelligent. I love BMDs, but this just shows a lack of research

    Hello,
Please, you Americans, stop calling this dog "Bernese Mountain dog", that's just too ridiculous. It is absolutely not his name. The word "Bouvier" (in French) or "Senne" (in German) means cow keeper. The REAL name of this dog in English is therefore "Bernese Cattle Dog"
He is a wonderful dog and I believe he has the right to be called by name.
    Thanks for him.

Golden retrievers aren't golden. Should we change that too? Or maybe change chocolate lab to meat flavored lab.
      God, I hate you.
