- Golden Retrievers do some weird behaviors, but there’s usually a reason behind why they do it.
It might be a behavior they’ve kept from their ancestors, or one that’s normal for dogs, but totally weird to our human culture.
A lot of the weird behaviors have to do with the fact that their primary sense is their sense of smell, and that humans and dogs don’t agree on what smells “good”.

Goldens also like to take the leash and walk themselves.
Mine does this
Mine too
Yessss..!!
My puppy been doing it ever since I got him. He’s 6 months now and it hasn’t changed.. so funny
Mine likes to lay in ambush when she encounters another dog, head on the ground, tail always wagging.. she only gets up to play when the other dog gets really close.. Mine doesnt have much leash behaviour since i dont ike walking with a leash... I dont even take it with me..
My golden always potties and turns to look directly at me and locks eye contact lol it’s so cute
Lol, I know exactly what you mean
Lol, same
It means they trust that you can defend them even when they are in a vulnerable position
Edit: I just got to that part of the vid haha
your dog trusts you
good owner
Same
Almost all of the 6 Goldens we’ve owned like to put their paw on you. They will lift one paw and put it on your arm when you try to pet them (or do anything else). Makes it super easy to train them to shake hands or do a high five!
Mine does too. So adorable.
Yes, mine does this also.
Yep mine does this all the time.
My son's Golden puppy seems to prefer the paw to the face, and I've nearly had my eyes lovingly raked on more than a few occasions.
First time GR owner, she does this it’s so cute 💟
I love my goldie so so much. She does this hilarious thing when she robs something. Then she stays dead still and pretends she has nothing in her mouth. All the while I can see it. So cute.
Our Golden steals things and brings it straight to me. Strange strategy but it works for me 😅
Yes, like she's trying to sike me out. 😆
My Golden will steal something he's not supposed to have and then pick up a toy or stuffie to hide the stolen item behind. He thinks we can't see it and probably wonders why he gets caught so quickly XD
Quand la mienne faisait une bêtise pas besoin de la punir elle allait se mettre sous le lit toute seule 😂😂
My loving 13yr old (going strong) golden has slept almost 23hrs a day his entire life. He's never retrieved a thing and can't stand other dogs. But he's my buddy and I'll continue to cuddle him and attempt to play as long as possible. 🥰
My first Golder retriever was weird her name was Cynder and she well even as a puppy she would lean up and fall backward like a trust fall and at first we thought she just lost her balance but nope she was doing it on purpose we even went to the vet about this to make sure everything was ok and right in front of the vet she did they never seen a dog do this before turns out she was doing it for attention. She lived to be 13 years old and I miss her every day
Just passing the first week with our pup and not disappointed with the good and the wierd!
My golden covers his leftover food with his blanket to store it for later. Aaahhhhhh!
Everything about goldens are so heartwarming. My golden has brought me and my family so much happiness that I am forever grateful to my Kobe Bean. Even on the worst days she cheers everyone up just by her adorable eyes but the best is how she seems to know who needs some loving and will come into bed or on the couch to snuggle right next to the family member in need
I find the shaking of the toys adorable tbh... Whenever my golden does it we all giggle at home
This was delightful. Could totally relate to basically all of this!!
Thank you for the information. I just adopted a 6-year Golden Female and this explains a lot of her behavior.
You’re just describing all dogs ever. But your not wrong. 👍
Our Golden retriever is 80% human, 5% cat, 5% parrot and 10% dog. He understands both English and Afrikaans. He loves car rides, and sit number 7 with his paw staring out the window. He even sits in the car for hours when it is parked. He always turns in circles before no 2, and spins the grass when he did no 1. He follows me to the loo. He loves walks and the park. Love rolling in the grass. Sweetes being ever. Obedient, smart, social, loving and when the criminals comes into the house he is first to hide under the bed. When approached by aggressive dogs, even being nipped by them he simply takes it without fighting back until the other dog realize he only wants to be friends, then it is zoomie time.
Thanks for the video. God bless you
I've had three goldens already. Our latest one never licks his Peter O"toole, AND he hasn't barked in over 6 years...he never barks at all. He cries when I'm about to feed him when I go into the laundry room for a scoop of his food...every single time morning or dinner, he cries when he's about to get fed...crazy. Every time I take him outside on the lesh, he walks in the opposite direction looks into the other room, then he comes to the outside door towards me.
You had me laughing all the way thru....You now have a new subscriber....
Fantastic videos!
Love this video
my golden does little whiny noises when he's happy, like when greeting somebody he loves, but also does these little whiny noises when he wants attention, or whn things dont go his way!
I have a golden retriever puppy and she relates to most of these!
The points mentioned in this video are not unique to Golden Retrievers - ALL dog breeds behave in this manner, may the dog be a German Shepherd to a French Bull Dog.
This explains so much about my Golden's behaviors.
Also explains every other dog
I always assumed my golden retriever wanting to come into the bathroom with me was due to him wanting to guard me.
I died laughing when you said you were scared when your puppy shook his toy 😂I was too 🤷
Hmm... Mayhaps my bully is secretly a goldy lol. Informative video thank you
My Goldie greets visitors by smelling their butt or front. . 😂😂 Its funny yet embarrassing. Even maintenance guys coming to our front door is greeted by goldie smelling front of butt 😂😂😂
Thanks from Richmond VA. It was great.
Luckily my golden does everything but eat poop. The bathroom one is just hilarious and so darn cute. If I close the door without her with me she’ll stick her paws under the door as is if she’s reaching for me but then will whine a bit until I let her in which she’ll just sit and stare at me or fall asleep
My theory:
Golden’s sleep with their eyes open because they are watching out for things that could harm them/predators
I miss my golden now :(
Very nice
we have a red golden retriever and absolutely love her
My golden used to be a poop eater when she was a puppy but now shes almost 2 and doesn't anymore
I have a golden n loooove her to pieces!!!
My six month old puppy wants to hold his leash like it's him who is guiding me and not the other way round and one more thing he wants to say hello to EVERYONE in his way - once he waited for a few minutes outside a home coz someone inside was whistling, like it was for him although that house was closed.
My golden dont eat any grass..it needs to be lemongrass.. seems like he is using those grass as a mouth freshner and he is in love with mud and water..he will come all chocolate color after spending 2 mins in the backyard on a rainy day and he is all smiles
Oh another thing is he wont poop while taking a walk even if there's one human nearby except for me..but when he is pooping in the backyard he doesnt even allow me to stand there...he needs some privacy
He is a drama queen and i love him for that
My dog if he does that deep sigh then u know he is goin to take a nap
My Golden loves eating grass 😂
you did it!
Brilliant Dogs, the best …but they’re definitely very strange 😂😂😂
You're missing the best part! They often do several of these weird things all at the same time! My boy sighs, falls asleep with his eyes open, on my dirty laundry, on his back, with his arms stretched out above him, then he starts dreaming, twitching & woofing in his sleep (which is even weirder bc he's never barked in his life)! I call him my narcoleptic acrobat!
My girl does all those except the stretching, and she dances to show off her toy, & also rubs against walls.
Now imagine the effect all this has on my very lert 2yo GSD! (Not a typo, he's a lert!)
Goldens move in between two people in contact because they're trying to get you to stop fighting, not so much to protect you.
Remember this video the next time you get a big sloppy kiss from your Golden Retriever. They're 💩 eaters... LOL.
I like the logo
Dogs do this in general, it’s not unique to only golden retrievers
Yeah, some of the things. I've had quite a few breeds and there are definitely some things distinct to Goldens. The looking me in the eye while pooping is definitely something only my Golden has done. 😅
I have a Goldendoodle and he exhibits a lot of these behaviors. He’s so goofy.
My golden, ever since he was a puppy, gets a big drink and immediately comes to lick my feet. Like clockwork. Anyone else have their dog do this? I can't be the only one.
My friend's golden retriever looked guilty while pooping too
The one I watch will full on charge me from behind and knock me down. Playful not mean but she’s strong.
my golden does everything mentioned in the video
They also like to greet you at the door
I have a golden doodle and according to this video, she acts more like a golden retriever than she does like a poodle.
I'm on my third golden and this is accurate
The dog on the thumbnail looks exactly like my dog it’s crazy
Thankfully, my golden was never a poop eater
When we temporarily looked after a Goldy for a family we knew, she was a poop eater.
This video used “Golden Retrievers” and “Dogs” interchangeably a decent amount, how many of the behaviors were exclusively related to Goldens? Not trying to be rude or anything, just very curious as I am looking to adopt a Golden soon.
Does anyone else's poop here there and everywhere. Like, walking round as it's doing it.
5:17 wait what
Goldens LOVE ferret poop.
My Golden Retriever told me that if I had to go out with her and watch her during her bathroom time, then it was only fair she got to watch me during my time on the toilet. She has a point.
When my ex and I would lay in bed and snuggle, my English Golden Retriever, also my autism service dog, would get in between the two of us
What about the rubbing behavior? My Golden grandpuppy rubs his body along walls, beds, people's legs etc, when he's especially happy. When i would take him to visit my mother, i had to start taking his harness off before he got to her, otherwise he would inadvertently hurt her legs by lovingly rubbing along her legs, and scratching up her legs with the harness.
My girl has to watch me poop its a requirement for her 😂😂she will whine at the door if i lock her out
I was lucky, my GR was/is never destructive. Give him an old slipper, his own toys, sticks, branches or cardboard boxes to chew on and rip to pieces, and he's more than happy.
My golden retriever would travel for miles for a bitch on heat even across country in rough terrain so haven't seen this as a trait or things they like to do 😅
Most all these things are true of all breeds.
I've noticed my dog licking his crotch when he wants to go out to pee.
At 0:37, when dogs sniff each other’s butts and go around in a circle, that’s called “background check’s”.
Mine sleeps with eyes open during naps then at night in my bed only with me he closes his eyes to sleep all night. Most annoying thing is he has to interrupt me and my first wife just got married and everytime we kiss or cuddle he breaks it up
Nobody gon talk what he said on 3:35?
Canines and humans both feel jealous😂both are mammals.
Golden retrievers play with a thief
My dog licks one paw bc he always pisses on it
Everything in this video my yellow lab and golden retriever mix does everything in this video except eat poop or roll in poop everything else is true even when he poops he makes sure to do it right Infront of me every time and stare at me and if I look away he will stop get to where he can see my eyes then continue
My dog destroyed a toy with plastic on it so we had to return it 😮
This is pretty accurate.
Replace golden retriever with dog and this makes a lot more sense. Why did you pretend this is behavior habits of only golden retrievers?
There's really very few behaviors specific to dog breeds. None of these are specific you golden retrievers. It's just a breed that has a tendency to be a little more sociable.
Most of these behaviours are Probably true for most breeds of dogs
'Weird Golden Retriever Behaviors Explained'... probably more appropriate titled 'Very common behavior that most breeds of dogs display'
Most of these things are pretty normal and innate to most Dogs , nothing weird about this
If your golden is a south pooper, hit te like LOL
would it kill you to put the video in segments?
Whole lotta every dog does that stuff pal . Take your golden to the ocean and let him go ! Oh and the dog looking at you when pooping is a sure sign it wants to be left alone . Yeah I can make up reasons for how they act.
Just me, or are most of these just dog behaviors?
This is dog behavior, not just Golden behavior
Epa gringo
these dog breed is crazy asf and full of blood sucking ticks! I would only own them, if i got a huge farm. no way to own them in little appartements or big cities, that would be a committed crime!
they only get ticks if u take them to big brush in the summer, near a lot of cattle/sheep... and also not give them anti tick stuff... But ur valid on ur other point though (somewhat)... retrievers do need a big walk (or 2)... like atleast 2 hours of walking (off leash) every day is nessesary... but more hours would be appreciated...
Just letting a doog loose on ur property isnt good enough though... even if u own a ranch... I also own a cavalier king charles thats 11 now... she also needs to walk atleast 1-2 hours... so its not just a big dog thing... people tend to underestimate how much movement a dog needs to be happy/healthy....
When my retriever comes back from a 2+ hour walk shes up and ready to go again right away... We also go on fishing/hiking days every week that last like 6+ hours... and often she has walked the 2-3 hours with my dad before this...
99% of these aren’t specific to breed
Here's a weired thing golden retrievers do.. Proceeds to list things ALL dogs do. Have my dislike for this click bait
This is dumb. Any breed of dog can relate
