- In this video I explain the different shift positions along with the proper shiftinf procedure in a 2007-2018 Jeep Wrangler JK or JKU.
Shift Postions
2H Position - is ued for normal street and highway driving on hard-surfaced roads.
4H Positon - is used for slippery road surfaces like snow, rain, ice, and sand. 4H locks the front and rear driveshafts together forcing the front and rear wheels to rotate at the same speed.
N (Neutral) Position - disenages the front and rear driveshafts from the powertrain. This is for flat towing behind another vehicle.
4L Position - (just like 4H) locks the front and rear driveshafts together howver provides additional traction and maximum pulling power for loose, slippery road surfaces. Do not exceed 25 mph (40 km/h). 4L is only to be used in extreme conditions.
Shifting Procedure
2H to 4H or 4H to 2H
You can shift from 2H to 4H with the vehcile stopped in “Park” or in motion in “Drive”. If you choose to shift from 2H to 4H while in motion do not exceed 45 mph.
4H to 4L or 4L to 4H
To shift fomr 4H to 4L make sure your automatic tranmission is in “Neutral”. Once the shift is complete place the automatic transmisson into “Drive” or realse the cluth pedal on a manual transmission.

I've owned my we 2013 Wrangler for 4 years. This is the clearest explanation I've seen on how to use the 4wd system. Thanks
Your welcome, I'm happy it helped.
So true
I just picked up a used 2013, and this information is in the owners manual.
What is not in the owners manual is how to override the automatic shift points in "D", and shift all 5 gears just by bumping the lever to the right or left when moving, (or 1st or 2nd when not moving). It is not in the owners manual how you can use it manually and stay in the gear you want, with an automatic clutch automatic clutch. It is not in the owners manual that you will drive in "D" and be a victim of epa shift points, to using a manual shift mode that mimics drag racers. :)
I will never use "D" again. (A light lights up right next to "D" on your dash to tell you what gear you manually selected). Hold the shift lever to the right, (up-shifting_, for a bit longer than shifting, and it goes back into "D" mode. Now,---I actually like this transmission.
I’m only here because it’s actually snowing here in Texas so thx man
I’m glad it helped. Thanks for the watch 🤙

Thank you for giving straight to the point answers without the endless chit chat.

Absolutely
I agree very helpful thank you
Thank you for the clear and easy explanation. Have my 2013 Jeep Wrangler going on 2 years and never had to use that shift but needed the knowledge. 🎉
Thank you u saved my life I was going to get stuck in the mall parking lot
Your welcome. Happy it was helpful
Never knew arabs are so funny 🥱
Paul Bart looking ass . Same I finally made it out the Jcpenny
lmao!
😭 thank you. I drove a jeep this weekend in the snow and had no idea what to do.
Glad it helped!
Thank you for this video explanation, I'll have to watch this every day for a month straight so I don't forget your words of wisdom.
I'm thinking about buying a jeep wrangler and have no idea how to use 4wd. This video was the easiest explanation i've seen!
thanks!
Glad it helped!
I had my jeep for over 4 years and this is the best description I’ve seen. Now I’m ready for this snow! 🤪
Thank you
I’m happy to hear that Kym!
Wanna know something else that is not in the owners manual? If your automatic transmission shift indicator only had "D" on it for drive, you can actually move the shifter to the right or left to down-shift or up-shift when you want. You don't have to be a victim of EPA shift points in automatic mode, (that are really not that efficient in the real world, and causes problems). I just found out I can control the shifting. Weird, it has been a secrete. But it just went from a dysfunctional transmission that I hate, to one I like a lot. :)
I love your video. I just bought a 2017 wrangler sport and this video was so helpful especially since we had a snowstorm in New York/New Jersey area today. Thank you so much!
Thank you Awilda! We got slammed today with snow in Mass. I’m glad the video helped.
This was the most helpful explanation I have come across. Thank you so much.
Your welcome! I’m happy it helped.
Thank you for your great video ! I have had my 2010 Rubicon for a bit and I want to go out the store today and it’s sleeting . Easy and great explanation!
Very helpful information thank you, I have searched and watched several videos with very different and incomplete information. The main point missing in most posts is the recommendation that 4H and 4L are not used on dry pavement.
Going to Grand Teton tomorrow in a rented Wrangler, so I needed this, thanks.

BRILLIANT.

Thank you
I found this very helpful Sir, I hope you may teach more in the future.
Appreciate the compliment
Very useful thank you!!
Thank you sir for helping me get up a muddy hill
Happy to help
Thanks for the info 👍🏼
great vid
4 Low changes the path of power flow in the transfer case, going thru a reduction gear, in my Rubicon, it is reduced 4 to 1 so now you can crawl up ledges in Moab, etc. Use two fingers to move the lever, I got stuck crossing a creek, tried to get it into 4 wheel drive and broke a plastic thing underneath that holds the cable to the body. Had to replace the whole cable.
A few months ago i bought a used 2016 wrangler, and when i got stuck at the bottom of an icy &muddy road after it had snowed, a guy came and showed me how to shift into 4wdLow to easily get myself out.
Since then, i've always been shifting into 4wdHigh from the parked position not moving, and
when i needed to get myself out of a tough spot , shifted while in neutral, from 4wH into 4wL.
But like i said : i've been shifting into 4wd always at a standstill first. Is that not good for my car? After watching some other vids about it, i'm concerned i've been doing it wrong for a month or so now.
Thanks man, I really appreciate you
Glad the video was helpful!
This helped great thanks!
Glad to hear it!
Thank you so much!
Thank you!!
Thank you 😊
I love you man
Love you too brother !
To get out of 4wd say from 4wh ....do I put in park n put back to 2h ?
Also after I put in 2h do I need to back up a little to rengage it into 2h
Thank you! This helped a female get out of mud
👍👍👍... Straight forward..Easy to understand..This is what I am looking for..Thanks bud..👍👍👍
HEY THAK YOU THAKS A LOT!!!😃👍🏻
Thanks
Thanks!!
What happens if you put it in neutral and shift from 2h to 4h ?
Anybody... what if my rear drive shaft was broken and I only use front wheel drive on the highway 4H would I get excessive wear on the transfer case and front differential? Or would it run just fine?
Thank you! This video was very helpful to me.👍😊
I'm happy you found my video useful. Thank you for the comment!
Do you have to do anything special to go from 4L back to 2H? Or just park or neutral and go from 4L to 2H
What happens if you have the neutral on then drive while its on?
Kiss=keep it short and ....? Thanks for such amaizing straight to point explaination
KISS = Keep It Simple, Stupid
Can u/should u, press on the brake when going into 4Hi from 2HI - vise versa??
Hi video was excellent we own Jeep 2 year now I know how do it thanks again
Glad it helped
Thanks for the information👍
Yw
I know it is obvious to those who are used to using 4 wheel drive, that your Jeep needs to be in "drive" position after shifting to 4 wheel low, but in your explanation, you didn't mention having to take the stick out of "neutral" back into "drive" after shifting into "low".
I agree, sorry about that.
Lol
👍👍
Thank u I have a 2013 jeep wrangler sahara
Glad it helped
Hi Any rattles on your 4 Wheel Dr.. Sometimes mine rattles if I hold the handle it stops is that normal
Mine had a really bad rattle I had to wrap the shift cable with friction tape to insulate it
So when u switch from 2HI to 4HI, do you need the engine running if you’re parked to switch? Thanks
Yes the engine should be running
What can happen if the engine is not running and you switch it
When in 4L, do we keep it in Neutral until we are ready to switch gears? Or do we switch to Park or Drive once it's in 4L?
Always put the normal gear shift back in to drive when you wanna start moving. The gear shifter for drive and park still works the same nothing changes with the functionality of that.
My only question is at the end.once you put it in neutral and shift it to 4L do change it out of neutral to drive?
Hi Niquisha, yes once your in 4L then you can shift to drive. Hope the video helped!
Is it okay to shift from 2H to 4H while moving without shifting my automatic to neutral before? Just straight to 4H while in drive
Yes, but at lower speeds not while on high way
Im guessing the two wheel is rear wheel drive? Am I right
Everyone in the comments has already said what I'm going to say. I THANK YOU!
how is 4H in an open diff different to a torquesensing diff?
What about shifting back, does vehicle have to be in park or anything?
Hey, you can shift back from 4W High to 2W in drive or park no problem
Quick question tho, to switch back from 4 High to 2 High can I just he in Park as well or going under 45mph and once you're in 4 High can you go above 45 MPH or should you stay under 45?
Yes you can go back to 2 high while in park. And while in 4 high you want to stay under 45 - 50mph
@@SpirosAutomotive awesome. Thank you! This will help me a lot.
@@SpirosAutomotive and just to also double check. 4 High would be just straight down as marked on the stick correct?
@@ItsLimitable yes correct!
@@SpirosAutomotive awesome. Now final question to be sure. I need to put my jeep back in 2H before getting off for the day correct?
Sad that i had to look it up. But i have a 2016 that i bought used . It would not move (shifter).. will try this again tonight
Sometimes you have to use a little bit of force but don’t over due it. Sometimes they freeze up if they haven’t been used in a while. If you can’t get it stop by your local mechanic and he’ll fee it up, shouldn’t take long.
@@SpirosAutomotive Worked this morning ,,, actually less then a hr ago.. Unsure if the org owner ever used it . works fine now . Thanks for the info and reply ...
@@diekatze9361 Happy you got it working
Sometimes, you have to allow the vehicle to roll a little while trying to engage.
How do you are it out of 4H or 4L??
Same way you got in. for 4L go slow and put it in neutral to get out of 4L.
is there a way I can tell if my jeep is on 4wd? I can shift to 4hi but the 4wd light doesn't pop up.
Yes the 4WD light should come on on your cluster.
@@SpirosAutomotive what if it doesn't? is there anyway I can tell if the 4wd is on? I don't see the light at all on my cluster. the only difference I've noticed is that it is harder to turn when on 4hi. i don't know if that is normal. it's my first time owning a 4wd vehicle.
@@naborreynoso6895 Try driving slow and turn the steering wheel all the way to one side. If you feel the vehicle binding then that's normal and your in 4WD.
Hmmmmm if I was you I would check to see if you have the front dryshaft on i bought a jeep without out the front dry shaft and put it on four wheel nothing I installed it later then the light popped up
Does the jeep have to be in motion every time? Reading my 2018 jeep wrangler owner's manual it makes it sound like 1)the jeep has to be in motion and 2) many terrible things will happen if you do something wrong.
Yes you should be in motion when engaging the 4wd
@@SpirosAutomotive but how do you do that if you're parked and you've got ice and snow around you?
If you're in park though you're not in motion right? About to drive in the snowy mountains so I want to make sure I get it right also lol
I put the new forgios on the jeep
You really like to rub that knob before you shift it into 4 wheel drive 😁
😅😂
Thought you are supposed to be moving al low speed when going from 2WD to 4WD!
I think thats just when moving into 4L
Just subscribe
Thank you
You jeep missed 4H Auto gear
Oops, sorry I thought this was a joke. Best of luck to all!!
How about how to get out of 4WD drive? lol
Why do ppl buy a 4x4 and have no idea how to use it? God bless Merica
O and 1 thing you missed was you can shift in 4 low in drive, just dont go over 3mph
..and go back to DRIVE> :)
