My friend uses a super simple system to hook up his gooseneck racing trailer. I assume it would work the same for your trailer. I'm not sure of the correct terminology, but it is like a tennis ball on a stick with a magnet. You attach the magnet to the top of the ball in the bed, and it puts the tennis ball in your line of sight directly over the ball in the bed. Basically you just back up keeping the stick on the center line of the hitch, and when you knock the tennis ball and stick over, you are directly centered over the hitch in both axis. I think it also extends if you want to do the same thing for a bumper pull. I bet he spent less than $20 for it.

Had this setup on my last rig and loved it minus the pain you had with hooking up, especially solo. Made for several attempts trying to get lined up just right. You might consider the chain kit that Reese also sells, peace of mind just in case and some states require safety chains on a gooseneck hitch . Worth a look...enjoy the hitch!

Congratulations on being part of the Reese Goosebox hitch family. Haha. We have had ours for going on 3 years and love it. When we bought our trailer new i had the dealer order one and had two calls from the service folks telingl me i should think twice about buying one. By the time i picked up our trailer three months later they had installed 5 more. It is worth the added hassle of lining the ball up with the hitch and as you said a spotter or camera is the best. Thanks for the great review you are spot on with pros and cons and wouldnt have a slide in hitch system again.

@@stevena1633I have a 20k 3rd gen. You can have it. Came with my trailer, prior owner installed it. I kept an open mind for 10,000 miles - its now sitting on a pallet in my scrap pile. It was a spacer kit required install - that comes with it. Personally I’d suggest you buy new bolts just for piece of mind.
I went back to the fifth wheel.
In my case it doesn’t contact the bed or anything, I have all the movement I had with a fifth wheel - I just had everything I hate about bumper pulls along with it. I don’t understand the gooseneck craze - they were factory available in the 60s-80s and died out. Now theyre back.

We installed a 20K goosebox on our 5th wheel and I must say, I really enjoy not having to hump a 300# horseshoe hitch in/out of the bed, REALLY enjoy the room in the bed and have also found that hooking up is a lot less time consuming. I also do not have a camera in the bed, and rigged up a cheap little camera that plugs into the 12 cig lighter port in our console, and I clamp the camera to the bed rail. Since I have the one camera now I still have to eyeball it to make sure I'm ok left or right but the camera helps me keep the tailgate out of our front storage compartment! Once hooked up I roll up the camera and store it in a pocket on the rear door.
I've also learned that keeping the goosebox low to the point that when backing in the rear of the ball socket will catch on the ball keeping me from backing too far.
Over all I love this set up! I've had several hitch set up's and by far this is my favorite!

@@stevena1633 If the goosbox actually touches the bed rails there are much larger problems. The only time our fifth wheel front edge has touched the bed rails is during travel over very rough terrain like boondocking. However, very slow travel and careful maneuvering prevents damage. That said, I experienced the same contact with the OEM pin box at the same location before install. The goosebox is worth the $ and effort. We are on truck #3 with the same trailer and a simple ball in the bed to replace. Still love it and I won't have a old style pin box on a 5th wheel ever again.

@@stevena1633 side rails have been no problem at all. My setup has about 7 inches clearance sitting straight. We can't make a full 90 degree but can make more than needed before you have to worry about touching the cab. Bed rails have always had good clearance. I like the design of the new Gen Y and would consider that also. Back 2 years ago the Goosebox was the only one approved by Lippert to not void the warranty. It is a game changer! Best wishes.

I have a first gen Goosebox and love it. Only downside is sometimes the airbag looses air on big bumps. I had an andersen ultimate originally, it damaged the pin box. It also was a first gen and didn't have the funnel. Since I have a backflip cover I couldn't see it to hitch up either so no difference for me there. I put a camera in the bed, but only use it if I can't back up pretty much straight in. Once you find how it should look in the mirror you don't need the camera for that. I love the Goosebox compared to the Andersen. For me, the backup angle is virtually identical with the Goosebox or Andersen. I had to turn the Andersen adapter the other way or the back of the pinbox would hit the bedrail on a tight off camber turn so I lost the pin box length extension some people can get.

Just came back from three weeks towing to Sturgis ( yes, STURGIS) though Oregon, Washington Idaho, Moooooooooontaaaaaana heighten a- state), Wyoming and South Dakota. Ram 3500, 6.7CTD, SRW CC, towing a Momentum 351M. 1700 lbs of bikes in the garage. Cat scaled at 27,000 lbs. Absolutely ZERO chucking or porpoising. That includes on I90 with all the frost heaves.
This is the same vehicle The Chick’s Life reviewed earlier. I will admit that the remote release is a nice upgrade but given the better fitment (no shims required) and lack of need for adjustment with air, I firmly believe this is the better choice. Both the torsion bushings and air bag systems are proven technologies so we take the durability argument off the table. Hook up is comparable for both systems with the difference of the remote lock a given to Goosebox. In favor of the Gen-Y I give it being a slightly lighter hitch (25-30 pounds a best guess) lower cost ($1,200 vs d1!500) and simplicity in operation (fewer moving parts, no adjustment needed). Full disclosure, I have received -0- compensation for my opinion. It is based on my experience as an automotive teacher for 22 years, farm mechanic for 27 years and my variety of pulling trailers, bumper, gooseneck and 5th wheel.

  • @marvs4628

I have already ordered the Reese Goosebox from my dealer when I ordered out fifth wheel. After doing the research it is by far the easiest fifth wheel system to hitch and unhitch. Another pro for me is that it should make it possible for my wife to completely setup, teardown, hitch and unhitch all by herself in case something happens to me. Only thing I don’t know is what my max turn angle will. be in my shortbed truck, but no matter what that turns out to be I will find a way to live with it.

Still getting the chucking. Not as bad. So I’ve been looking at gen-y and this goosebox. Aside from the connection point issues the gen y had at the time of your last review. Did one of these 2 hitches ride considerably better, less chucking etc? Thanks again for your reviews and your channel.

I did not experience any chucking with either of them as long as you have enough air in the Reese Goose Box. The reese goosebox was the reason that I got a fifth wheel last year. I never wanted to give up my bed or have a 250lbs piece of dead weight that I have to store when it's not being used. Even the Anderson I didn't like due to the size but was looking at that before I found the goosebox on BTBRV. My only complaint with it is the stupid valve block. On my first trip I found it wouldn't hold pressure well and even though I started out with 40psi the 90min trip to the camping site dropped it down to 20psi. So this spring I ditched it and installed a wireless one air compressor kit in my garage of the 5th wheel and ran that hose out to the air bag of the goosebox. Now I can constantly monitor and adjust it and know it's holding pressure that I want no matter how rough or smooth the road is.
As for needing a cone for hooking up I will disagree. The problem with the cone is as you drop the trailer down and it starts to "funnel" you are putting undue stress on the legs of the trailer whether it's forward, backwards or side to side. This will cause issues over time. You will find over time you will get to know where your sweet spot is be able to hit it without the constant checking. I have a 17 RAM with the high mount camera and it's useless. I just know where the goosebox lines up with my back window and can get it most of the time without re-adjusting. The new RAM's with the zoom in feature for the high mount camera might be better but the one I have sucks. If you want to look into it you might be able to add it to your 14 and just need the computer programmed to use it with your screen.

  • @rjhein
    @rjhein Pƙed 3 měsĂci

Great review. Did you do any upgrades to the nose of the trailer to account for the added torsion flex you get with these? One of thing things one needs to watch out for is that these hitches actually can cause significantly more torsional flex above the main body of the trailer directly above the hitch itself. The reason for this is basically the mechanics of the angle of the actual connection of the pin now being significantly lower, thus the weight gets transferred differently above the reese box resulting in far higher torsion forces, which can cause cracking and/or bending as this is not a gooseneck trailer. Gooseneck designed trailers have increased strength in the nose area to account for that, whereas these 5th wheels generally don't, because they are originally designed to use a traditional 5th wheel pin box. There's some info online, and a couple vids of people having to literally rebuild and add strength to their nose sections due to stress fractures/cracking. I highly recommend looking into that.
