One of the best reviews I've seen on this hitch. What I really appreciate is the follow up on your experience after a period of time, especially on the big question of whether the turn is tight enough for all the maneuvering that you've done. Excellent job and thanks!
Thanks for the review! I am switching to the Anderson hitch in my new truck and had the same concerns with clearance. You answered all of the questions that have been making me unsure about the switch. My son has been using the Anderson hitch (steel) for about 5 years in his long bed truck and loves it.
Great Video, I wanted the Anderson Ultimate originally, but had my doubts about clearance in a short bed, thanks for helping me make the decision I wanted........
Good deal and welcome to the family, I've ran and Ultimate 5th wheel hitch for 2 yrs now and love it. My 12 yr old son installs it most of the time (I help with the torque) and he's had no issue lifting it.
@@robbiejk9613 I still have my Andersen hitch and yes absolutely my (at the time) 12 yr old as well as my 10 yr old could carry this hitch around. My 12 yr old could install this in the bed of my truck with little issue. My 14yr old daughter had installed it previously as well with no problems.
Great job with a great hitch. They are life changing.
Thanks
Thank you for doing this review. I'vr brrn back and forth myself on which one to purchase and you defanitly help make up my mind. going with the Anderson now. Thank you once again.
So glad we could help! Do us a solid and buy it via the amazon link down in the description. It doesnât cost you anything extra and we get a little something for it! Hope you guys like it as much as we do.
Love mine. So easy to install and reinstall
Thorough review, good job!
Thanks for this review. Trying to decide which hitch I want to use in my 2017 gmc short bed. This really helped me make the decision to go Anderson.
This is why I bought a 3500HD and long bed 8' box truck but I like the Anderson and the Pullrite ball hitches.
Great video! Thanks for all the great info!
Great piece. I bought the Anderson and love it!
Some states require safety chains for that hitch since itâs still considered a ball. I just ordered some for myself as I never knew that until I started doing some research. Love the vids
I really appreciate you making this video. It helps answer my questions about this hitch. Thank you so much.
Thanks for the review. Keystone Rep at the RV show actually recommended this for raptor.
corgily we have one in our Ford F-350 and we pull a Raptor 415
I have this hitch and I LOVE it !!!!!
we don't even have a 5th wheel, but you describe everything so well that it's still a fun watch (& the boys like seeing the tools lol)
Did you get the Marco Polo we sent you the other day?! I think the boys will love it!
I have the Andersen hitch. LOVE IT! While I have a long bed truck, I carry two bicycles in the bed, mounted side-to-side. I also have the adapter mounted with the cone facing rearward giving me less clearance, but I still have plenty of room. The big selling point for me was the light weight. Even with the B&W turnover ball to mate up to the Andersen, the total weight of the two is only 110# (35# Andersen, 75# B&W). I use my truck each week for hauling many items and live that the Andersen is so light and comes out very easily; five minutes. I also love that the truck bed is flat with the Andersen removed. Hitching/unhitching is EASY.
Thanks for the information. We are really thinking about one of these and your video really helped.
Glad we could help out in some way!
Rhonda Crater please watch the video from brass289 before you purchase one of these hitches Iâm certain you will change your mind since watching it I have sold mine.
Great video! Thanks!
Nice!!! Thanks for the video!
You get it! We do mostly kids content, but Mav appreciates content from all over. We've just begun - but Maverick wants to follow in your footsteps. :P
Awesome review, thank you.
Thanks and great job.
We have the same truck and looking at fifth wheel's over our current bumper pull. Great review I've used the Anderson bumper pull hitch and loved it and probably going with this for when we upgrade to a fifth wheel.
Love your videos. Keep them coming! I use this hitch with a Grand Design fiver. We also have very similar trucks. Few questions for you;
1. Are you using the standard Ultimate or the âlowered modelâ?
2. Does your Ram have 20â wheels?
I have the standard model and my truck does have 20â wheels. I have to run the pin in the lowest position and the fifth wheel is still not level. Tilted slightly up in the front, even after raising the pin box. I have contemplated moving to the lowered model.
Overall, I love the hitch, too. Light and very easy.
Pro tip - re-torque your hitch to the truck AFTER putting the weight of the pin on the hitch. Prior to tightening the locking bolts, of course.
I donât know about short beds, but I love it for my long bed as I can switch straight to my gooseneck horse trailer without having to taking everything out.And you can be off venter a little and it will slide down on the ball. The really light weight is nice too if you need to take it out.
Nice video. Thanks
Great video! Thank you... You just helped me make my decision!
I appreciate these videos. Basically all of the options you've done reviews on are the hitch setups I've been considering. I really wanted to do a Reese Goosebox, but the Rhino box on my new rig isn't compatible, so my backup was the Andersen Ultimate Hitch, but I was a little worried about maneuvering in tighter spaces. I thought I might have to go to an auto or at least manual slide, but can't really afford the extra payload weight. Watching this has confirmed that I'll do the Andersen.
Also watching the video about your dirtbike rack fail :( I was planning on doing the same thing to the back of my trailer so I could bring my toys, but didn't have to commit to the limited layouts of lighter toy haulers. Good to know what to look for and avoid!
Great review!! I hope the old one sells for ya!
Thanks man!
Hello James, love your family and your videos. Thank you for taking the time to share all your experiences and knowledge. You published this video 7 months ago, are you guys still using the Anderson? Are there any negative thoughts or feelings about it? Do you see yourself changing the Anderson if you haven't done it already? I know you have done thousands of miles with it so I know you have lots to say about it. Looking forward to hearing from you on this and we stay looking forward to seeing more videos, stay safe and happy campingđ
Slim, QUIET, works great. I wanted modern and out of the way. This is it!
I've ran the Anderson from Virginia to Oregon in a short bed dually. No problems whatsoever.
Wow, I don't blame you for wanting to change, got me tempted to change to one, but I can't right now justify getting another one when my B&W Companion work. The one I have is the puck system on my 2018 3500 Dodge ram, it's a non-slider on my short bed truck, I only use it once but if it doesn't work for me I will put it for sale and get one.
Hey nice video! Thanks. hopefully this hitch will work well with our new solitude fiver and short bed F350. Fingers crossed.
Does it work ??
James great video. When it comes to 5th wheels i'am clueless. This answered a lot of questions for me. BTW sorry missed you two on hangouts last week . Was a really busy week. Spent all week working on our church's guest's 20k trailer brakes. 3 axle's , one master cylinder and a couple of brake calipers later he has brakes now. We are just so lucky that we have good trailer shops around. Try to make it to the next one.
No worries man. I completely understand that life gets crazy! Plus it sounds like you were doing some good work.
Good vid
You a big top gun fan
We have the old steel version of the Andersen and a 6.5 ft Super Duty. We've never had an issue with hitting the cab.
Pretty general. When selecting a hitch, clearance at 90 degrees should always be the goal.
Definitely one of the biggest factors of doing the Andersen Hitch, ease of removal! 35lbs and 3 bolts/1 pin and its out and your bed is fully back. I've looked at the typical kingpin hitches, and even the lightest ones are well over 100lbs (closer to 150+). That's simply not an option for me being the occasional hauler. I cant believe how heavy your auto slider is, thats soooo much weight! So much its taking a huge chunk out of your payload capacity.
Yo you guys are my number 1 favorite youtuber I watch every video you make BTW I'm proud of you guy have 48k subs I'm happy every video
Nice video! When I go 5th wheel it will be between this and the Reese goose box.
Do u have a long bed ??
Great review and install James!! Iâll definitely be looking at the Anderson Hitch when or if we got to a short bed truck!
This is really good info. We just bought an Arctic Wolf 321BH that has the new lippert front end and the Rhino Box pin box. I originally wanted to get the Reese Goosebox, but the dealer and the manufacturer said that because of the pin box design that it's not possible. We're going with the Andersen Ultimate 5th Wheel Connection, but I'm getting the toolbox model which gives you an additional 3.5" of offset for trucks with toolboxes. I have a 2020 RAM 3500 Mega Cab single rear wheel, so it's not a tiny bed, but it's not for full size bed either. I'm interested to see how tight of a turn we can do.
Bro chill. Nobody asked.
Great video. Don't you need to use cross chains with it?
Love your video on this hitch option. Maybe you can help me out with some beginner info. My wife and I bought our first 5th wheel and are excited to use it. The trailer is a nice 2012 Wildcat and the truck is a 98 Ram 2500 4x4 extended cab short bed V10. The bed or truck has never been prepped for a 5th wheel or goose ball. Your video looks as though your Ram has the factory prep? I'm still learning about all this. Thanks for any info you can give me.
Might want to lube that ball, James! Nice video. Would be cool to see if you are getting better mileage or notice any other improvements after driving with it a bit.
The Andersen product site states, "The ball of the Ultimate 5th Wheel Connection rides inside a greaseless coupler. That means that unlike other fifth wheel trailer hitches for short bed trucks, the Ultimate Connection eliminates dirty hands and mess!"
The whole purpose of this style of hitch is for us gooseneck trailer guys. We need the gooseneck ball to pull that style trailer. If you own a 5th wheel trailer as we do, we are not able to install a regular 5th wheel hitch and still use the gooseneck ball. Been using a steel Anderson hitch for 3 years and it works absolutely great. No chucking. Our trailer is 36 foot long, not ultra lite junk.
Great video! I have a couple questions, We're picking up our first 5th wheel (2020 Grand Design Momentum 351M) and towing it with a 2019 F350 SRW CC short bed. I've towed tag along trailers for years and our old trailer is a 2018 Rockwood 8327SS (36ft long plus the tongue so its pretty big) Im confident towing that thing anywhere, making right turn etc. Question is should a 5th wheel tow similar in regards to turning as a travel trailer. 2nd question, around here some camp grounds are fairly tight, have you ever been in a place where you wished you had your slider back, thanks
Great video. Are there any safety concerns with this hitch verses other hitches when towing?
What is the make and model of of your truck and what size bed is?
If needed believe B&W has a Goose ball with 4â setback to bring it away from cab.
Yes B&W does have an offset ball, however it's incompatible with Ford's OEM puck system (square peg, round hole).
Yes they do. I have one and it allowed my trailer to clear my cab at 90 degrees, with a little over 1.5" to spare.
Thanks for the great video. We're closing in on our first 5th wheel. As we've got a short/standard bed '18 F350, I'm working through the hitch decision. It's come down to a choice between the AUH and Reese Goosebox. Did you have any concerns regarding the warranty on the Lippert frame? I'm seeing some conflicting info regarding Lippert's stance on the AUH.
Did u get your hitch ??
My man... same decision here. Auto slider or this Anderson setup. I have a feeling with the adapter mounted as you have it I'll get cab space on turns. My worry is the pin box back hitting the side of my bed. I guess raising the ball 1 hole might lift that up no??
FYI, If you travel through Texas make sure you install safety chains. They consider this a ball mount.
Great Video. Quick question , what are you using to pull you Fifth wheel three-quarter ton or 1 ton diesel or gas??
Thanks.
Well done video and very informative. Thank you.
Can you provide an update on this Andersen Hitch, are you still using it and would you recommend it?
Great video. What goose neck hitch is that mounted to your truck?
excellent review !! do you happen to know how wide your camper is? were considering the Andersen hitch we have a 2017 ram 3500 but are camper a Palomino Columbus is pretty wide about 100.5 inches and were concerned for cab clearance, otherwise next possible option would be Reese sidewinder, thank you
So still with some time now...You still like the Andersen hitch...Thanks
Great video btw! Question about the height inside the bed. How high off the truck bed does the camper ride at? So the lowest point of the quick release down to the truck bed, in inches. My camper doesn't have an extended boom arm. It's close to flush with the frame
I'll keep my Anderson hand down
Would love this set up , but Iâm not sure Iâd be safe with my 2018 Ram 3500 Mega cab , short bed. My trailer is 44â long , so on tight turns , I pull as far forward as I can before turning sharply to make my turn. Would that make me smash out my window ? Iâm torn between this , a Reese Goosebox . Or , should I just give up my bed and go with the Demco auto slider for the towing piece of mind ? If anyone has thoughts on this , Iâd love to hear em. Thanks.
Great information to think about. 1 question is that with the Ram2500 which has the other 4 points of contact on other hitches in the box, how does this Anderson stay as stable with only 1 point of contact with truck? Does it come with an option to connect to the other 4 connect points in the dodge?
Do you get the chucking with the Anderson hitch? Another great video
Nope. No chucking at all so far!
Have you heard of any manufacturers refusing to do warranty work on the frame of the 5er if it gets damaged while towing?
Great installation video except you missed a very important step of re-torquing after the trailers weight is on the hitch
Very informative vid. Do you have a 5.5 or 6.5 foot bed? Thank!
We are purchasing our first 5th wheel. We have a ram 2500 2017 with 6.4 bed. After reading the reviews on Amazon - several customers had the ball break off most with towing well under the 24k capacity. Our new trailer is 9k dry- your thoughts?
Have you ever been to the woods? Sometimes there are uneven dips on dirt roads...just wondering about pivot
Great video, I have a 2019 Ram 1500 Hemi with a 5.7 short bed. I purchases an Escape fiberglass 5th wheel which max wt. is 5500lbs, I did buy the Andersen hitch but I donât have my trailer yet because itâs being built. Do you think Iâll have an issue with the 5.7 short bed?
I love it for the most part, but Iâve read reviews where the hitch can fail on hard stops.
With the weight point shifting back. Did you notice you nose aiming any higher or front feeling any lighter?
james, Saw the video and it should work for what I need. Question, It only mounts to the 1 ball on the bed no extra lock downs for the corners needed? Thanks
Correct
Isn't the purpose of the autoslider to keep the weight over your truck axle while still letting you turn sharper?
So now you've simply moved your weight towards the rear more which could've been done with most hitches
Would the Andersen Ultimate hitch fit in a 5.5' box? it would be going into a a 2019 Chevy Silverado
I have the same truck RAM 2500 short box. I do have a slide in bed liner. Would that have to come out?
Vic, i am about to buy my toyhauler and will install the Andersen. Is it still good for you?
Did it decrease the amount of play (chucking) with the trailer? What about using your king pin tripod when parked. I refuse to give that up, one of my favorite accessories.
Nice, I am undecided which hitch to get. They are so heavy and looking at your video. Are you still using this Anderson or have you switched hitch again?
Hi, I know I late to this, but in order to use the Anderson, I need to install a Gooseneck ball into my bed first, correct? What does that cost to install as well
Do Anderson Hitch company make this hitch to fit directly into the puck connection system?
Is this now considered to be gooseneck? If so why aren't safety chains required? Thanks
Great Vid. Thanks. Look like El Paso #915
This video sold me a Demco... Literrally. It's brand new, installed pre-covid and just waiting to try it
Will this work on a 2017 2500hd Chevy? I have a Moryde box on my 2013 38ft Montana Highcoumtry?
How do you attach safety chains???? I'm new .......
What were you attaching when you were drilling holes?
It looks like the Anderson Hitch moves the pivot point/tongue-weight of the trailer posterior to the rear axle which defeats the benefits of a fifth wheel/gooseneck hitch?! An auto-glide hitch (when in the forward towing position) maintains the pivot point/tongue-weight in front of the rear axle. Please answer/comment.
Was the ride better with the slide or the Andersen? Or did you feel no difference while towing?
Too bad these don't work with the Moryde pinbox like the Pullrite superlite 2600 will. These are nice if you have a standard pinbox.
Do you still have the Anderson hitch and if so how has it been. Just got 5th wheel looking for easy hook up for 2015 ram short bed truck.
What if you put a longer pin box head on it?
I have what I hope is not a stupid question. Will this work with a 2002 F150 super crew V8??? Iâm wanting to get a camper but not liking the regular hitch trailers Iâm finding
I have a 2010 Tundra with a bed liner. Not sure if there is a gooseneck ball. any way to check? Can that be added??
What's the tow rating on your tundra? Not many 1/2-tons towing fifth-wheel trailers, most fifth-wheel trailers exceed most 1/2-ton truck's tow capacity.
Would this work for a 5â6â bed
What is the size of the truck box in this video?
The most damage I see is the pin box hitting the side rails of the truck bed when going up steep off camber turns, off road, turning on very uneven ground etc.... narrower fifth wheels work better with short beds because you can put the pin box more forward which eliminates the contact with the side rails of the truck...
