    Hi, You have a great channel and I agree with your opinion in this video. I think you made the right choice about the 2018 intel mac mini. I also have the 2018 six core mac mini with 32 gb of ram and the built in blazing fast 1 tb ssd, paired with the blackmagic E gpu and I use davinci resolve 15 on mojave. 4k editing and grading in resolve with the film convert plugin works flawlessly, I love it. All my movies were edited on that setup. I also have a 2012 mac mini and a 2012 macbook pro with E gpu's and I edit 2K video's in resolve with no problems. I learned how to hook up E gpu's to both of my 2012 mac's from your video's on your channel, thanks for making great and helpful video's. Keep em coming.

    Thank you, so much for sharing your selection and why, this was excellent. Several months ago, I was in the same boat and wanted to replace my 2010, mac mini (the last model with a built-in DVD super-drive). Had been waiting for over two year's for Apple, Inc. to come out with (what, I had been calling a "mac mini pro" model) with a more powerful processor, more RAM, and four (4) thunderbolt ports. But, what we got was Apple's new Mac Studio and when trying to order the version that, I wanted there was a 5-month back-long. In addition, there were several issues with Apple's new 27-inch Studio Display. So, not being a power user, I decided to just pick-up for $1,200 a used 2014, trash can size 8-core/D700 Mac Pro with RAM of 64GB and a 1TB SSD and paired it with my already owned Apple 27-inch Cinema LED (none thunderbolt) display and everything works great together (smile...smile).

    I was torn about moving from my 2018 Mac mini to the M1, but for a different reason. I have a couple of old but still useful x86 apps that I don't want to give up so I used Windows 10 in Boot Camp frequently. Since I like to tinker with computers my solution was to pick up a mid-2012 MBP 13, upgrade the hell out of it, and run Boot Camp on it. Then making the shift to the M1 world was a no brainer for me.

    Ok I have a question- I have two 2018 Mac minis, and was thinking of upgrading to either the M1 Mac mini, or base Mac Studio. My 2018 Mac mini is running 64GB RAM (I upgraded since I don't think there was a 64GB option at the time). I mainly do my work on this machine, and like to use tools like Google Earth, but I run into problems when I leave several VLC windows open playing network streams from security cameras or video encoders, and this really gets the fan going in the Mac mini. Also, I run a huge 5120x1440 monitor along with two HD monitors with the 2018 machine, but I find that the computer has a lot of trouble with this- up until Ventura, I have had to unplug and replug one of the HD monitors or it would flicker endlessly until I'm able to get the monitor stable. Now with Ventura, that problem is gone, but every time I start my day, the content on the two HD monitors swaps, meaning all the windows I placed on one monitor end up on the other and vice versa. It is very annoying. The machine also struggles a bit at times, but not terribly, so I'm not really disappointed at all with this 2018 version except for the monitor issues I have. Am I doing myself a disservice by going to the M1? Should I buy an external GPU. I was looking at the Mac Studio only because I have 3 monitors to drive, and I hear the only way to drive 3 on the M1 mini is to buy a DisplayLink adapter. But what drives me away is that HDCP supposedly ends up broken preventing the user from being able to watch some content, like Netflix for example. What would you suggest to someone in my position. I'd like the fans to stop running incessantly and be able to leave several players open, and use the 3 monitors. Would I notice a big degradation in performance if I went from the 64 GB 2018 Mac mini to the M1? Would I be better off going to the base model Studio in that case? Or buy an external GPU for the Mac mini 2018 and that might solve my problems? Thanks for any help!

Right now the 14” pro base model sells for the same price as the 13 inch with the same ram and storage (16gb/512gb) here in Denmark. @@Eevnos you might be right it’s interesting though. Resolve is really well optimised for m1 though. But might be harder on the ram than fcpx. Fcpx is not that ram hungry. the ram is shared by all the hardware. And 16 gb will be used pretty fast if all gpus and cpus are put to work and and you run those plugins in your timelines. It could be fun to monitor the usage while it slows down.
      I went for the 24gpu just to get 64gb ram option. The bonus was 2 encoders. Ram dos not fit more just because it’s integrated it’s just faster.

    • @Eevnos
      @Eevnos  Před rokem

      It’s actually about options and being able to use an external GPU to bypass the limitations of the integrated GPU, the M1 is limited in that regard.
      Resolve was just one example of software, although optimized for M1, works better with an external GPU than the M1.
      Also you have to be careful with the “GTX1060 level GPU”. I assume you’re referring to certain synthetic benchmarks, I would advise caution as those are rarely an accurate representation of world performance.
      Lastly, everyone’s workflow is different.
      For me, there was no option to bring the M1 to where I needed it for my workflow but with the Intel Mini I was able to upgrade the RAM and add the external GPU.
      If you’re happy with the M1 then that’s great!

    • @critiquetest2594

      Does the M1 really have that GPU level? I'm a console gamer but have been getting into my PC games recently - I cannot play any of my AAA games (Fifa, COD, GTA & F1 ) on the Mac M1. The best game they have is Transport Fever 2 and City Skylines - and even with both these games - the larger the gameplay or map -then more likely for the M1 to crash (which it has done on me numerous occasions). Its all good and well when on paper Apple claim their GPU can reach XY levels - but due to the portability of games and apples efficiency direction - doubt Mac will ever be good to games on. With that being said, if Microsoft or anyone else break the Cloud Gaming service market - this convo might then be fully over!!!.

    • @Eevnos
      @Eevnos  Před rokem +1

      @@critiquetest2594 in actual usage it does not match the level of a 1060, especially when talking gaming.
      It does in some synthetic benchmarks but those are never a good representation of actual usage.
      That’s the main reason I don’t use them much in my videos, the results are very misleading.
      Unfortunately, since Apple doesn’t support Nvidia cards anymore, there’s absolutely no way to accurately compare them.

      @@Eevnos Many Steam games getting Metal ports and they run incredible outperforming 16" Intel Macbook pro.
      As far as video editing goes, M1 crushed everything since day one in FCPX. The first lust to run Canon 8k, GoPro 5.6k timelines in real time. And even on regular Sony 4k runs several times faster than my old 10th Intel with RX5700 or Macbook Pro 16 ever had.
      Being optimized for M1 does not mean anything. You can optimize a flawed app and it will run times faster but it will be still flawed.. Adobe, davinci are perfect examples.

      @@MrTechcat The 16" Intel Mac Pros have a pretty weak (by today's standards) mobile version of the Radeon GPU.. it's not too surprising they're being outperformed, in fact I'd be surprised if they weren't.
      The M1 chip is great and if it's working for you then that's awesome, this video is about why I went with the Intel so I could upgrade the RAM and not be constrained to the GPU limitations of the M1... it's not a debate of Resolve vs FCPX.
      That being said I would like to see what you're basing your assumption that Resolve is flawed & buggy off of, if you have some info to support that I'd be interested to see what issue some people are having.
