  • Should you buy the M1 Mac Mini or the Mac Studio? Can the Mac Mini do everything that you need? The truth is, that It’s pretty unlikely that you need more than the M1 Mac Mini - not impossible - but unlikely. If you absolutely need the additional RAM, storage or processing power - then it’s a no-brainer - get the Mac Studio. But I want to talk about some reasons why you may WANT the Mac Studio - even if you don’t NEED it.
    NOTE: base Mac Studio comes with 32 GB of unified memory

    I don’t think many buyers would be comparing the Mac Studio with the base Mac mini. A more realistic question would be, can I do what I need to do with a maxed-out Mac mini, or do I need to jump to the Studio model, for perhaps only a couple hundred dollars more. I don’t think you’ve answered that question.

      I am one of those few who had that question 😅 I was thinking on moving full to Mac because I am a 3D animator, so I really need power, I own a PC with 64GB of ram, R9 3950x and a 2080ti gpu... But I am also an app's developer so I need a Mac no matter what but actually the base Mac mini is perfectly enough, so I was thinking on upgrading my PC and my old Mac or go full for a Mac Studio, but I found out that with a Mac mini and upgrading my PC was more convenient for the price

I purchased the Studio a couple of weeks after release and I couldn't be happier and feel that I will stay that way for many years and I just got the base model. Thus far it chews through anything I throw at it with ease.

    A great comparison. I am upgrading from a 2011 27” iMac, which has been a workhorse but now suffers from unravelling version support from apps, so I mostly use it in target display model from my 2019 MacBook Pro. I’ve been able to upgrade the iMac myself, replacing the HDD with a SSD, and maxing memory out to 16GB, but my MacBook Pro is stuck with 8GB and I regret not getting more memory. I decided to go with the Mac Studio Max. Starting price here in NZ is $3,599 NZD (equivalent to $2,235 USD). I maxed it out to 64GB and doubled internal SSD to 1TB (to avoid access speed issues reported recently). Now I’m shopping for a 49” monitor. While this feels over the top now, it was definitely a decision to future-proof to a degree.

Do you think it's possible to use my 2010 iMac as monitor paired with Mac Studio? thanks!

    Great comparison. For my use case, I’ve come to the conclusion that the Mini is sufficient and by far the best value. The only reason to delay is the rumoured release of the M2 redesigned Mini in Oct/Nov but that’s almost 6 months away and no guarantee that the M2 Mini won’t actually come out until next Spring. Also, I can’t see much scope for ‘redesign’ with the Mini - it’s just basically a box shaped desktop computer.

    Thank you for posting. For anyone reading these comments.. I picked up Mac mini M1 16g with 2TB of storage.. If I was buying today I would have gotten the Mac Studio for my work flow... The Mac Studio was not available or even announce, and in my work flow, my 2014 MBP 15" was needing to be retired.. the M1 Mini is great. for video editing FCPX is great. for editing my Blackmagic BMPCC4K BRAW it's capable, though if you got the 6K BRAW or higher I would think you would need to drop resolution. My 3D animation is vastly improved over my older laptop, though if I was making money rendering then obviously get Studio $4,000 version. I purchased my Mini because I knew SOMETHING better was coming but I needed SOMETHING NOW and I don't regret it. I got the 2Tb version since I knew at some point my Mini would become 2nd tier computer and be just for music creation with Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol (plug ins alone are over 1 TB of storage plus other 3rd party.. (if you ever had plug ins across multiple HDD's you know the nightmare it is) so I went for max storage. Next year I will likely get a Mac Studio.. and it might be the $2,000 version with some bumps up or the $4,000 hard to say. What I will say is that still most software does not utilize the GPU cores well or Apple's Metal, so a lot of the potential of the hardware is underutilized by 3rd party software. but it is improving. Rumors abounded for a year now about a higher tier mini M1 Pro/Max or a M2 around the corner, and maybe now it is around the corner (september) If not? get what you ned now. better to get something and vastly improve what you had before like some Intel laptop like I did.. the saving can be spent on a Blackmagic pocket cinema camera, or if you prefer a Panasonic G5/G6 or what ever your hobby/business is. For most though, honestly a Mac mini M1, 16g and say 512 or even 1TB storage is more than enough unless you know you have some real reason to spend more..

      I fully agree. Apple gave us the Mac Studio that nobody asked for ... then removed both the 27-inch iMac Pro and 27-inch iMac models and did not give us what we had been asking for ... a "mac mini pro" with a more powerful processor, more RAM, and more thunderbolt ports. However, Apple, Inc. learned one lesson from the G4 Cube which, was to stop selling your "like" systems. If they were still selling new 27-inch iMac's and a new mac mini pro model, then very few people would be trying to buy a Mac Studio (smile...smile).

  • @movdqa
    @movdqa Před rokem +1

    I got the mini in July 2021 so no Studio option but one of the big limitations of the mini is that it only supports 2 external displays. I found a very nice DisplayLink adapter which fixes that problem but now I have the issue of RAM limitations. 24 GB would be perfect, 32 GB even better. I also have an iMac on my desk with 32 GB of RAM and run stuff that uses a lot of RAM but not CPU-intensive programs on that. So it works. But it would be nice to have it all in one system. So the limitations are RAM, number of monitors, GPU cores (I often use 80% of the GPU cores and that's with a partial workload). It would be nice to have something in-between but it would be difficult to price. Seven monitors is impressive. I only have 4 right now. I have gone back and forth between 4 and 5 but I'm using 4 right now.

    What I want is something in between, it will probably be a new formfactor but the specs will be more like a Macbook Pro, a Mac Mini with an option for a tier higher of M2 chips but more importantly, more I/O and the ability to have more displays without dongles, that’s what I wanted.

    Just discovered this channel. Great videos!
    As an editor, I feel everyone is sharing flawed logic regarding render speed being only a rare benefit. I just got an M1 Mini to test with a 4K H264 project (Panasonic Lumix source). The computer can’t reliably play an edit without dropping frames. Especially with LUTs, re-sizes, and speed adjustments applied. The solution to this is to *render the timeline* , which I find myself doing *constantly* . On a simple short edit, a Mac studio would likely save 30-50% of my working time due to render speeds. If it has the power to avoid rendering while cutting, that would be an even larger productivity leap.
    So faster renders are not just about export, but about quicker *uninterrupted workflow* (if the project is more demanding), which is vitally important for reaching that creative flow-state, impressing clients, and making money faster.
    (The mac mini may become my media server, but will not remain an editing machine)

      Just to follow up, I upgraded to the Studio Ultra. The Mini was nearly unusable for certain projects… like 6 days of rendering estimated wait times. That same render was done in under 7 mins on the Ultra. No contest for me - the Studio is 100% in the *need* category for getting work done.

It only lags behind in video a bit but is still doable. this is in comparison to my core I7 10th gen laptop. The laptop may have a slight advantage, but minimal. My case was: I am 3D animator and Android/iOS Developer.
    I was wondering on upgrading my PC and my old MacBook or go full Mac and buy a Mac Studio. At the end of the day, exactly what this man said was exactly what I considered, that power was gonna be an overkill, because a Mac mini is enough for developing and compiling iOS apps and certainly I don't need any MacOS app for my work, where in that case that power would be busy and won't let me develop while it's rendering, so it doesn't matter if I have to switch between computers but it matters if I have one available to keep working while the other is working

    I found the base Mac Mini to be limiting. I am a developer not really a creative type. But once you start running some processes the base M1 mini start slowing down. So you considered upgrading to a mini with 16GB and 512 GB drive and now you are pushing 1100 and still living with the restrictions in terms of ports, monitors, 16 GB of memory, etc. So I decided to upgrade to the base Studio. Having the addition ports is great as is 512GB of drive plus 32 gb of memory. In addition, my external drive in m.2 enclose is also faster.

    Hey guys, I was hoping for some advice, although I know this is an older thread now. At the moment I’m looking to replace my 2013 MCBpro 15”. I am completely naive regarding M1 chips, etc. What my needs are: I’m just breaking into voice acting so I need to record and run Adobe Audition, or any good DAW, I also need to do picture & video editing; but nothing crazy. I make shorts with my kids for fun, etc. But we’re considering moving into longer pieces, longer films. And I’ll also be using the same machine for podcasting/streaming etc. And of course be doing day to day workflow/life stuff. How much power do I need? I went way overboard in 2013 but I’ve had a machine that’s been great for almost 10 years. I would rather err on the side of caution and have too much “power”, than to regret later. But I also don’t want to go crazy, overspend on what I will never need when I can spend that $$ on other equipment. Thank you for any advice you can give me!

  • @ianscreamsvideo
    @ianscreamsvideo Před rokem +1

    The base model of studio is 32G Ram not 16. So that is a big difference when comparing upgrade cost on mini to meet base cost of studio. You can't even upgrade to 32 on mini but if you could it'd be like $400. Plus $200 for SSD to 512 plus $100 Ethernet plus $100 hub. But w a slower chip, slower SSD, less gpu. Still cheaper Amd still a powerful system compared
    To my 2012 MBP. I've been debating but I'm leaning toward the base studio w just an upgrade on SSD to 1 TB. For music production. I think I would hit walls w an upgraded mini. I am tired of hitting walls. The base studio would take care of all my needs as far as Ram & Chip speed. Use external drives for libraries. And I should be good for liek 10 years. I might hold out a few more months to see if there's a new mini w the M1pro and 32gb. Which would be just fine.

    The Mac Mini had enough cooling power, hey, it cooled Intel furnace CPU's.
    Also, on Mac Mini case you can add ports on the front and back.
    The port selection doesn't really matter as Apple can stick them in where ever they want. Don't need a bigger case for more ports. There are 5 sides in a Mac Mini case, Front, Back, 2 sides and Top.
    Apple just needs to CNC them in.
