    The M2 Base Mac Mini with less than 1 TB of SSD, apparently performs close to the M1, but if you choose the 1TB version, you also get double the transfer speed from 3.000 mb/s to 6.000 mb/s, which is not stated on Apple's site. The reason for the increase of transfer speed is due to the fact that the 1TB version has 2 ssd chips compared to 1 on the below 1 TB.

    I do have one suggestion in your video you was talking about render times in video editing. okay great it renders a minute faster, but in video editing that's not the only important factor in video editing the biggest factor is timeline scrubbing how well does it scrub through the video when it is on the timeline that's the more important question 1st and then render is important.

    Is a bit unfair compare the integrated GPU vs a dedicated (some have the same size than the mini) btw the best thing at least for me is the M2 have a HDMI 4K 120HZ FINALLY... the performance is not a massive difference except in encoders and GPU.

    I don’t think that the M2 base 256gb is a problem. Apple has not tried to do cost cutting in the traditional way. For any base model, a slight compromise is expected. That’s what makes it cheap. For 256gb storage, if apple used 2 X 128gb disks, they’d have to maintain stock of 128gb chips only for the base model which would drive up its price. Instead, using 1 X 256gb disk is cheaper because even for the 512gb model, they have to maintain the stock of the same disk. The quantity of the 256gb disks that apple buys must also be cheaper because of this, thus making the base model even cheaper. I prefer a $599 256gb model with 1 flash storage disk, to a $699 256gb model with 2 flash disks with faster storage.

      i can share my experience with m1 mac mini. I had originally bought the 8gb model but then returned it for 16gb model. now at that time excel, ms teams etc were not natively supported so that may be a factor with 8gb slowing down when a lot of apps (browser windows, outlook, MS teams, Excel) were open. with 16gb (256gb) everything was fine.
      But now in 2023 all these apps have native apple silicon (M1, M2) support. So 8gb may be enough. but if you want to play safer, consider 16gb (or 24gb) although their pricing is crazy for ram upgrades.
      I think, most likely base model is more than enough for most of the time.

    It's not worth an upgrade from M1. But if you're coming from an Intel chip the M2 is definitely the better option even with the slower SSD. I wouldn't buy the base model for working tho. The 16GB RAM upgrade is a must and it's still pretty cheap for such a powerful machine

    • @helloukw
      @helloukw Před rokem +1

      I wouldn't say its cheap. Its not cheap by any means. 200$ upgrade for only 8 gigs of extra ram is not cheap in any scenario, especially since that translates into real world, for instance Europe, to almost 300$ upgrade for just 8 GB of ram. Even if you compare it to a similar priced PC, the only benefit you will see is the small factor, power usage and the fact that is a MAC.

    • @ZeerakImran

    Speaking as a photographer, who doesn't shoot in JPG, but in the more realistic and larger RAW files, your test of downloading a couple hundred jpgs is just not realistic. It would have meant more if you had to process and save a 2GB file with multiple layers to an SSD drive. That, to me, would have been valuable information.

  • @brentstwocents
    @brentstwocents Před rokem

    You said "if you transfer large projects onto your SSD from an SD card or something you can expect you can expect the base model M2 Mac Mini to perform signifcantly slower than an M1 Mac Mini with an upgraged SSD". Not quite correct. No matter how fast the SSD in your computer is, it can only move data as fast as the SLOWEST part of the chain. Reading an SD card would be about 100MB/s while an external USB-C SSD would be 400-900MB/s depending on the drive and enclosure. Transferring files to/from an Mac Mini internal SSD with a theoretical benchmark speed of >1500MB/s won't be any faster unless your external drive is a Thunderbolt enclosure, and even those enclosures typically cap at 2500MB/s.
    IMO, people waste so much money chasing theorectical benchmark speeds that are meaningless in real world applications.
