I've had my M1 Max MacBook Pro for over a year and a half and it's probably the best investment I made when I went full-time as a content creator. It's the most powerful laptop I've ever used and it's the best for video editing and creating content in general. Now I need something for my home office so that I can edit at home without having to worry about unplugging and plugging in my laptop to my Apple Studio Display. Is this an overkill? No, I think this is the best Mac desktop that any creator who's starting out should buy. Whether it's the base 512GB SSD model with 16GB of RAM, you'll be able to crank out content no problem with that machine. The fact that this Mac mini I reviewed can go toe to toe with a $4100 laptop from a year and some change ago is really impressive and for so much less money.

Thank you so much for putting this video together. Your configuration on the mac mini m2 pro was exactly what I was thinking of doing and this video only validated my choices and gave me confidence to pull the trigger on buying it. I appreciate the comparison between the SSD speeds of the 512GB and 1TB. And now I'm subscribed :)
you helped me with my decision. Ordering mine today! Thanks Mark!
taking my m2 mini back now, i was using it at a stopgap until the m2 studio but i love it that much i want the m2 pro version.
I have one with the same exact specs. It flies. I put Paralells and Windows 11 Pro on it, and I am basically doing anything I want with everything I want, fast and easy. Love it.
I never thought someone would make such a detailed comparison between the 1TB and 512GB SSD versions of the Mac Mini. This should definitely help many people avoid spending money unnecessarily.
Thank you. You are the first to actually test the read write speeds on the m2 pro with 512gb vs 1 tb. I have been worried I have bought the wrong machine and should have went with an m1 because of ssd performance issues. Keep up the good work!
Awesome review. I think this is the build I’m gonna buy!
Amazing review for the Mac Mini
Nice, exactly the test I was looking for to see if it can handle a loaded video production edition..
I almost got the Mac Studio 2 but thanks to you I’m going with the mini 😊
Glad I could help!
HALLO!CAN YOU EDIT 4K 120P 10 BIT or 6k 30p without using proxies?@@HeyMarkL
Nice work Mark, ty
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for the video. I was wondering about the 512 vs 1TB speed.
Objective and Honest Review Mark!
I see you use Studio display, and something that I figure out how to get is - do you can tell me the height between the screen and the table?
I assume you do not use an adjustable stand, and believe it or not, I cannot find this measure anywhere online.
Yeah you have the spec i'd choose too, cause you have to sell the machine to get a ram and nvme upgrade. I remember the old Intel ones, where you could change ram and storage so I'm not thrilled with this and I think the 2TB cost Apple charge is outrageous.
This is Really Awesome
Great review. What monitor was displayed in the video?
Good one man... You got skills to have a spectacular tech review channel... Keep it up..
This is the best summary of the m2 pro that all other videos try to touch on but miss something. This video checks all the boxes like 1tb is faster and upgrading the cores in real word is negligible.
Why did someone comment no real world. Hello did you watch it. That is what is reviewed for 1tb is faster than 512. Real world. Core upgrade negligible. Real word.
If I would’ve seen this video I would know exactly what I would’ve wanted to purchase. And so I did
M2 pro 1tb 16 ram 10 Ethernet. For me ideal thank you Mark for a great comprehensive review.
I wanted the Mac studio but now I really want this higher end m2 mini
Smart choice. Since you're video creator, presumably working in Final Cut Pro, you really don't need those CPU/GPU cores as much as you need fixed function acceleration for FCP inside M2 Pro!
Thanks for your video! I heard in a review that you don't need 32GB on the M2 Pro unless you run virtual machines frequently. I'm more in need of storage myself. I was thinking of getting the Mini with M2 Pro 10 Core, with 16GB memory and 2TB storage. I'd love to know your thoughts. Do you think this would be a good purchase for the money?
Do you get the same ssd speeds from the 512gb and 1t drives in the standard m2 mini as you get with those ssds in the m2 mini pro?
I have the Mac Mini M2 Pro with 32 Gb RAM and 2 Tb SSD, compared to my old iMac from 2014, it's a different world of performance, it was time to switch because, although the Intel iMac 5K was almost specced out at the time (32 Gb RAM and 2 Tb fusion drive) , it's not supported anymore and it was more on the slow side the last years. For me a big SSD inside is also important, even if the prices Apple asks for them are high. I'm buying a new Mac every 8 to 10 years, so I want a Mac that is good for a long period.
Mark, salamat, po! ♥
I recently got the M2 , not Pro, specked out with 1TB HD and the max 24GB RAM. WOW!...this thing is a beast!...more than I ever really need!
Woah! Congrats. What's the Geekbench scores like for you?
@@HeyMarkL for my use, those types of scores are really not that important, so I don't worry about those. I know, to many that would be weird. This replaces quite an older Mini I've had for a few years.
Apple ecosystem is impeccable
You answered all my questions I’m going to buy max mini m2 pro 1 tb 32 ram / I think that will be mind blowing after my 2018 Intel i7))))))
I bought the same config as you. Thank you for your review. I am looking forward to mine!
Hope you enjoy it! It’s a great machine.
This may be a silly question but not being a computer expert by no means. I have a late 2013 iMac, intel i7 with 32gb of ram and was wondering if the mac mini M2 pro will be a big upgrade. I mainly use Lightroom Classic. Thank you for your time.
it'll be an insane jump over that 2013 iMac you have. Even the normal $599 M2 Mac mini will be a huge jump. No lie.
This may sound dumb but I’m just discovering Xcode, which would be best if I’m just looking to create apps to customize my iPhone/iwatch? I don’t do video editing, I usually just watch CZcams
Appreciate the details on real life experience when using video editing programs. I was just going to get the 16ram and 1TB to give it more speed and room whenever it had to use swap memory. Now you got me consider the 32ram
The 32 definitely helps with memory swap and having that bigger SSD too kinda helps speed things up as well.
2:45 the lengths of these bars are way off, compared to the scores. The bars would indicate that the macbook has more than twice the score of the mini. The lengths indicating write speeds at 4:11 also can't be right as they would indicate the mini 1 TB having more than twice the score of the mini 512 GB.
Hi Mark, thank you for this video. I’m curious why you didn’t go for the Mac Studio. To my eye, it appears that the more you spec the mini, the more the studio begins to be the better options. Interested to hear your thoughts. Cheers
Hey Josh! I went with the M2 Pro Mac mini because of its size (desk space/footprint), the HDMI 2.1 for potential future Studio Display with ProMotion, and I feel like the M2 Pro Mac mini is 'as fast' as the Mac Studio that I'd rather have the HDMI 2.1/WiFI 6E, and I have a feeling future optimization for M2 chips will get added to Pro Apple apps soon. I don't believe FCPX/Motion is fully optimized for M2 chips yet.
@@HeyMarkL some great points and things I didn’t consider. I’m currently in the process of upgrading from my 16inch i9 mbp. Trying to decide between the two. Main use will be wedding photography editing and sorting.
@@joshsaacks8822 Same here, are you considering 16 or 32 gb?
I'm more interested in 32 gb with 512 storage and adding some external ssd- around 1850€ for pro mac mini m2
Base mac studio is 2050€ here in Europe.
This was the case for me as well, as the M2pro got closer to the specs I needed, the M1Max Studio ended up being the better option. I really wanted to love the M2Pro Mini for the awesome form factor but after comparring it side by side on high track count projects to our studio partners M1Max Studio, the Mac Studio ended up being the more powerful machine overall, especially in an audio and video based production studio. Returned the M2Pro for the M1 Max Studio and haven't looked back.
@@GroovyMishek So my i9 MBP ended up failing so I settled on replacing it with a 16 MBP with the m2 pro, 16gb ram and 1tb ssd. I really wanted to do 32 gb upgrade but the ram prices are extortionate. So far it’s a great machine, the battery life and screen is amazing. Yet to push it with photo editing.
That's the same mini I've built, I've added the ethernet upgrade as I use a network file server. I'm almost ready to pull the trigger, it will be the least expensive Mac I've ever bought. People are now saying to wait for the next gen studio but I need a new machine now.
Why wait. There’s no way of knowing when it’s coming or if it’s coming.
Apple always gets you that way.
Thanks mark. My big question solved. The choice to put 32gb makes the system go more comfortable, among other things, for the transfer of files that, currently, is usually very large for those of us who work with the computer.
Could you please also mention the temperature while editing videos or performing intensive task.
I didn't really dive to deep into thermals since I never really had issues with Apple Silicone running hot, especially my M1 Max 14" MBP. The Mac mini did feel warm when I was exporting a video in the background while watching videos on CZcams, but it wasn't HOT. It was warm, and didn't really notice slowdowns just fyi.
if you had a choice between the Mac mini M2 Pro and the Mac Studio with the same specs ( 32 Ram , two Terabite GB ) , which one would you choose ?? The difference in price is not that big .
if you work with GPU-dependent software like video editing and 3d modelling, go with the Mac Studio. Other than that, M2 Pro Mini all the way
Thanks for the insightful video man! Can someone tell, if regular M2 Mini can run dual WQHD @ 144 HZ. One via DP and one via HDMI 2.0, Apple homepage is just speaking of those "up to 6k" setups. so from a pure technical view, it should be running, right?
The Mini PRO can, not the mini itself. The mini itself is one up to 5k and one up to 6k at 60ghz. Pro can do two displays at 6K 60Hz/4K 144Hz, one 8K resolution display at up to 60Hz, or one 4K display at up to 240Hz.
Regular mini can’t push more than 60Hz as far as I’m aware. M2 Pro can push up to 8K60Hz / 4K240Hz via HDMI 2.1.
You can probably try running TB4 to Display Port. I’ve seen posts about running 4K 120Hz using the TB4 port on M1 Pro/Max devices last year.
On the Mac mini m2 pro does the fact that the 10/16 chip is a binned chip mean it’s compromised in some way or is it still better than the chip in the mini base m2?
It is binned, but comparing it to the upgraded chip, like I mentioned in the video is not a huge jump. 5% at most at least for everyday tasks.
Huge jump from a base M2 even if it’s the binned version just fyi
I think I will ordered the M2 Pro Mac mini with the 1TB ssd also.
I considered going this route but it didn’t make sense to me. I have an external 8TB raid, so the additional storage doesn’t help. And I got it for remote work. So $1299 made the most sense.
Hi, I am thinking going this route, what are you using for remote desktop how are you setting it up, I had used vnc before, but it is a PIA is there a better solution. Also how is the machine performing, I haven't received mine yet but anxious to see all the feedback? (m2 pro base config too)
Good comparison, I will choose 10 core CPU, 32GB Ram and 1TB SSD now. Thanks
Glad I could help!
Just because of this pretty useless video? Wow.
what would you recommend for photographers? I don't do video just images.
M2 Mac mini (not pro) with 16GB or 24GB RAM, and a 1TB SSD.
I like your to-the-point style. The costs that Apple charge for extra storage is sickening. I'm quite an intense Lightroom user and my 2019 iMac is starting to creak so I want to get the MacMini M2 Pro to run Lightroom and Photoshop ONLY. Outrageously expensive storage aside, my question is: will 16GB RAM be sufficient for my needs? Or do I have to bite the bullet and go for 32Gb?
You honestly don’t even need M2 Pro. You should be OK with the regular M2 but make sure to upgrade your RAM to 24GB and whatever SSD that isn’t base you can afford. Highly recommend 1TB.
For real. I built an 8tb nvme external thunder bolt They for $900. I could do 16tb for another $788. they want $2400 for that upgrade. That’s insane!!!
@@HeyMarkL One aspect I love the the M2 Pro however is the 2 extra Thunderbolt ports for a total of 4 TB ports onboard the M2 Pro where the MB M2 Mini only has 2.
@@HeyMarkL thanks, but the deal maker for the M2 Pro is the four usb-c ports which regular M2 doesn't have. If i got the M2, one port would be for the monitor, leaving me with only one spare port...and especially if I'm going to slum it with a 1TB internal SSD, I would definitely have to connect more than one external drive to the beast...unfortunately Apple doesn't give me very much choice.
Currently using an i7 mini from 2012 and it is running fine! However now it is way outdated, Chrome doesn't like it anymore.... can't update OS (stuck with Sierra) I was hoping for this one, approximately. For me it isn't much of an upgrade though without 2T storage, springing for the 12 core/19 core version and of course the 32 gig RAM. I use Logic, Affinity, imovie and occasionally FCP. About 2600 is a lot but the headaches saved with Apple products (ten years of super well-behaved mini) is worth it to me...
It can do Monterey-if you update…I have the same one 2.6 server edition…I popped in a 2TB SSD…and I have NO ISSUES!! However…I am planning on upgrading to M3 mini-so I would rather save the money now then KILL IT later!! And I am VERY sure the M3 will play Triple A games flawlessly!!!!
I don't necessarily think you need to upgrade to the M2 Pro. If you're not doing heavy 4K video editing or 3D work or heavy photoshop/illustrator work, you can spec out a regular M2 Mini and upgrade up to 24GB RAM and 2TB SSD. That'll run you around $1800 and should last your 6-10 years easily.
@@HeyMarkL Thanks! Worth consideration.
@@IPULCOLUMBIA I have the 2012 non Server mini. I was set on getting the M2 Pro Mac mini but now, like you, am starting to think that maybe it’s better to wait for the M3 Mini. My 2012 computer is still working fine! However, I am prepared to go out and get the M2 Pro if my computer decides to crap out on me. Do you have any idea when the M3 might come out though?
M3 Mac mini won’t come out til next year. They’ll test it on the new Air coming later this year. Maybe Q3.
Have you got the 10gb ethernet ?
thxxx
I am waiting for delivery of a Mac mini M2 pro speced almost the same as yours except I have a 512GB drive. I have ordered an Acasis enclosure and a 2TB Samsung Pro 980. Will this configuration do the trick for a wannabe video editor?
Yep! That should be fast enough for a lot of tasks.
@@HeyMarkL thank you.
I’m really torn between getting this Mac mini in the same specs you have, or going with the Mac Studio m2 with 96gb memory, 1tb ssd. I really only make 4k videos, with 4k files, use photoshop and Lightroom and that’s about it. From what I’ve been seeing, the Mac mini should be capable of doing this, but i want to futureproof as best i can…If the mini had the SD card slow, I would 1000% chose it over the studio. I’m just not into the dongle life on my desktop computer….but I guess I could push through to save some $
Mac mini definitely can handle all the things you’re looking for. In my opinion I’ve never had any major slowdowns in any of my projects BUT if you do find a Mac Studio with an M2 Max with 96GB RAM for a really good deal go with that.
nice
i mostly working on illustrator, ps & indesign , should i pick the base model one or the m2pro one ? 😮
I’d suggest M2 Pro. Although you can probably pass for base M2 but with higher RAM and SSD
@@HeyMarkL oh thx for responding 🙏🏻💕
RAM has the biggest on PS & Illustrator for me. M1 with 8gb was gobbled up way to fast. Hoping the M2 Pro with 16gb is the answer.
This is a great video!
I have a question this would be my first Mac mini, which would you recommend the the Mac Studio or The Mac mini M2 pro? I’m a comedian, Actor and filmmaker which system would help me with my editing videos and streaming? Thanks
I think you’ll be fine with the M2 Pro! Would just suggest that you get extra storage. Keep the RAM and Processor as stock.
@@HeyMarkL Thanks for your advice!!
a good comparison would be the 2021 14inch MBP m1 pro 8/14/16 32gb ram 512gb ssd vs Mac Mini M2 pro 10/16/16 32gb ram 512gb ssd. mainly coz refurbished or second hand they are about the same price. and to be honest most people are waiting for the M3/M3 pro macbookpro so would not buy the base nor higher max versions macbookpro m2 with upgraded 32gb/64gb ram (thermal throttling, m3 expected to obliterate the m2 pro and chances for the next MBP to get rid of the notch but retain Mini LED to avoid the Oled burn in as some of us keep our macs for a long time. Any chance to find a comparison of this type? coz deciding this as a stop gap purchase measure (while waiting for the M3 for 1.5 years or at least 8 months for MacBookAir M3) and less chance of thermal issues with mac mini m2 pro (vs 14 inch MBP) as apple doesnt turn on the mac mini fans even as the cores heat up to 108 degrees (i assume imo its done to make the 14 inch MBP m2 pro not look bad vs the Mac Mini M2 pro).
2:25 -- but what if I bumped up the GPU to 32 for M2 pro mini
I have $2000. Is it recommended to take the highest-spec Mac Mini or go to Mac Studio? what do you think ?
Depends what you're looking for! Both are incredible machines.
If you go Studio, you lose out on WiFI 6E, HDMI 2.1. But you gain more GPU cores, more ports, and overall size is bigger
Mini will get you HDMI 2.1, WiFI 6E, smaller footprint, faster CPU, but less ports, no built-in SD card slot, and a lot less GPU cores.
In my opinion, base processor is fine, upgrade the RAM, and SSD. Don't necessarily need to pay for the upgraded processor.
Hi, I'm replacing a 2013 iMac and am torn between the Mac Studio M1 Max 10 CPU 24 GPU 32 GB memory 1 TB SSD versus a Mac Mini M2 PRO 12 CPU 19 GPU 32 GB memory 1 TB SSD. My use is music recording/production using Logic. Which would you recommend for my application? Thanks for the info and I subscribed.
Mac Mini M2 PRO 12 CPU 19 GPU 32 GB memory 1 TB SSD
Mac mini with that config you mentioned will perform better for your tasks. In all honesty though. You don’t really need to bump up the processor. The base configuration alone should do you just fine. Just max the ram.
@@HeyMarkL you say good
@@HeyMarkL I've read some comments about the noise of the Mac Mini M2 Pro. This is a concern since some recording I do is miked in the same room as the Mac will be. For example for acoustic guitar I use several microphones, one of which is an overhead condenser mic to pick up room ambiance. How loud can the M2 Mini Pro get? Thanks
Will this Mac mini be any good for music work ?
Yes! Absolutely. Even the base M2 Mac mini will be good for music work. Would just recommend upgrading to 16GB or 24GB RAM on base M2 Mac mini and bumping storage to 512GB SSD. But if you have the budget, even the base model M2 Pro Mac mini will be just fine.
Thanks for the review! really well done!
can I ask you where did you get those bar graphs from? or did you make them yourself?
MotionVFX!! I believe that specific graph is from mKeynote
@@HeyMarkL thank you so much💙
Hey Mark, what aspect ratio is this video? seems wider than 16:9 but not 2:1 cause i’m not seeing the dynamic island cut into the video… looks very nice
Hey Kevin! It's actually a weird aspect ratio lol. It's 256:135. It's like 2:1 but not really. Love this aspect ratio the best.
@@HeyMarkL I think I might have to try that for my vlog! 2:1 cuts into the dynamic island which sucks coming from an iphone 13 pro
What's so sad is I could definitely get away with an M2 Mac Mini but if I move to macOS for desktop I'm going to want to use my 144Hz monitor...that is going to push me to M2 Pro when I *so* will not push that chip lol
Your Mac Mini is only $1900, much cheaper than the Macbook Pro.. but how much is that display?
Just what I wanted to see - a decently upgraded M2PRO - I m thinking a similar system but with 16 gig ram , 1 TB SSD- I already have an M1 Max laptop with 32 gigs 👀
Highly recommend going for 32GB RAM if you can for longevity. But if you already have an M1 Max with 32GB you should be ok!
Can this mac mini M2 pro can play AAA game?
I’m going to get the m2 pro Mac mini with more cores, 32 GB or ram and 1T of storage.
I think I need a nap.
Great review. Coming from a 2015 iMac with 32GB of RAM, I assume 16GB RAM of Unified Memory on a Mini should be enough? For context, I ran a test exporting photos out of LR while exporting a 4K video at the same time. Something I would probably ever do, but this was just to test. Watching Activity Monitor my Memory Pressure stayed pretty flat at a little less than 50%, Memory Used peaked at 25.64GB and Swap Used peaked at 3.76GB. Actually pretty shocked how well the old lady handed something this crazy.
Definitely enough for most people! If you plan to replace that iMac. Go for 32GB since it seems like you’re going to keep this machine for a while. Might be best to have more RAM for future proofing
I like him
thanks!
Bit of a shame they didn't offer the max in the mini.
Would be great to see, however, it would create thermal issues which would be difficult to solve.
For me the regular mac mini - 24GB RAM , 512GB SSD is more than enough & too much power for me😊
For those who use the extra 4 thunderbolt ports in M2 mini pro is great if they really use it. If we don't do pro works in a pro device, then will be unnecessary waste of money.
Speaking facts here 👏🏼
@@HeyMarkL Have a good day Mark 😊. New to your channel and Subscribed your channel for more updates. Loved the way you explain very nicely in detail ❤
I bought the 16GB and 512GB Mini M2 Pro 2 earlier this week and I am returning it for a 32GB 1TB model. My usage sees me eating in to swap a lot.

Why not get a studio @ that price?
@@nVG_Tv I want HDMI 2.1
@@steverix8181 word!!
Dumb question maybe but can you upgrade the SSD yourself or is the Mac mini becoming like all other apple products where you must configure it at purchase or you’re out of luck. I don’t understand how all of you content creators can stomach base models with 256 and 512 SSD’s in 2023!!! Seriously? I’ve upgraded my 2015 MacBook Pro to 2TB SSD and mostly programs take close to 1TB. I would spec anything I’d buy now with a minimum drive of 2TB and probably die at the price initially to get a 4TB drive. Especially if you can’t change them yourself at a later date.
Not a dumb question at all. Unfortunately you can't upgrade after purchase, so you gotta make sure you go with whatever you feel comfortable with and what you really need. My M1 Max MBP is spec'd out with 4TB, and this Mac mini has 1TB, but I have externals ranging from 2TB to 8TB that I can use to store videos files after each edit and project. So it's not an issue for me.
For the record, what you are talking about at 4:22 in this video: The minute you are involving an external drive in the mix, the internal SSD speeds have *no bearing* on transfer speed or performance. Even a Thunderbolt external NVME drive is going to basically max out around 2000MB/s. The *only* time internal SSD speed matters is with entirely internal copies, and generally at large sizes. All of the M2 machines including the M2 Air actually have faster random sector read/write speeds, and this *does* impact users of all systems on a daily basis because unless you are working with gigantic video files with huge export sizes (40GB+) you will be very unlikely to be writing a file sequentially.
mac studio would've been a better deal.
Depends on the situation and what I needed. I wanted a smaller form factor and have HDMI 2.1 / WiFi 6E.
Bro the Pc is right in front of you! Use it and show it off! Stop with the bench mark numbers and info everyone else gives.
Blaa blaa blaaa....not a single real world application test/review!
But it’s so pretty! 🤣
Apple products are for status, not workloads.
@@itmeurdad Wrong! I have been using Macs since 90´s professionally (advertising/graphic design), they are the industry standard, everybody knows that. Plug and play (Mac), plug and pray (Windows). ; ) I actually bought that Mini M2 Pro. My criticism was just about that useless video, not about Apple products.
@@oldtimer7635 I'm a developer so the same is true of me. But that's the VAST minority of use case for apple products.
Facebook, lecture notes, and fitting in with peers, are the primary.
The content is shallow to match the audience's relationship with the product.
@@itmeurdad - If you make videos or photography, Mac’s are the machine of choice. Otherwise a PC is often better. PC’s used to last longer, as apple sunsets hardware. However Intel and Microsoft have wizened up, windows 11 now only runs on newer processors, so that advantage is now gone.
If you are doing 3d the M1/M2 is not very good, it's ok for rendering but for high vertices modelling and animation it's absolute rubbish.
No that’s the problem most Videos are with 32MB of RAM, because NAND’s have been cut in half - and that’s why most streamers doing 32; so it actually function with hard work flow.
More of the same... numbers... I think people are interested to see it working on a demanding video editing like 4K or even 6K full of effects and grades
I don’t do 6K editing, but have done demanding 4k video editing like I mentioned here. It performed like champ.
@@HeyMarkL Very well so, thats what you should post a video about because videos on youtube with benchmarks numbers we find a lot. Would be interesting to watch a video where yu or other youtuber is using that machine on a 4K 4:2:2 10 bit complex editing to see how it runs, I noticed that you are using FCP but as DaVinci is becoming the industry standard would also be nice to watch an editing being made on it.
