Girl, we teachers have the same deal from the public right now. We went from heroes to “ungrateful whiners” so quickly in the court of public opinion. Congrats!! This sounds like an amazing decision for you. I left the brick and mortar classroom a few years ago to work from home as a virtual teacher, and I absolutely love the flexibility! It’s amazing to have time to feel like yourself again and pursue other interests in your spare time. ❤️

I too am a teacher and feel all of this! Congratulations to both of you for being able to carve your own paths. I will say that some (or many) are not so blessed and have to stay in a thankless job to have good benefits or pay bills on time. Perhaps the conversation also needs to be had regarding these essential fields (healthcare, education, etc.) being better compensated!

Exactly. I worked as a special Ed assistant for 10+ years. I quit in order make sure my two youngest got appropriate DHOH services, which were provided more than an hour away. I miss it so much and my kids are back in our local schools (kind of, I am barreling the district currently for many different things including placement), but unfortunately my district doesn’t respect the health and safety of students or staff and as much as I want to go back to work, I cannot under these circumstances. Thank you for still teaching. I have a lot of respect for anyone still working in education or medicine.

My husband puts people to sleep as well. He quit for the same reason. You are not alone. And from what I hear from friends in medicine it is a nightmare. The medical profession is being destroyed. It breaks my heart. I was a physical therapist for 30 years. The best people are in medicine. I am so sad but I know the feeling when you have taken the weight off your shoulders. So I am happy for you and your 2 beautiful girls. You will not regret your decision. It is a win win for your family. Congratulations. As one mom to another, I am proud of you. 😁👍
As a 22 year old respiratory therapist, my love for my job has went down hill very fast working full time during the pandemic. I’m so tired, and burned out. And seeing this video is giving me the courage to do what’s right for me, and not feel ashamed or less than. Thank you! You’re so amazing. And we as health care workers are more than just our jobs

As a chronically ill disabled person, it makes me sad that the good doctors/RNs/therapists are leaving. :( I really worry about the future of healthcare in our country.
Yeah and private equity companies are buying up practices and all they care about is more $ next quarter. Even buying up hospitals to drain all they can. Like “oh well you are now assuming our debt to a random LLC in $X amount” and then find out they have the same executives and it went in their pockets.
After buying it they then institute massive layoffs, stop paying vendors and invoices, cut services, etc then claim bankruptcy and then they get to sell off the land for even more profits. Then leave the community in dire straits… near me this happened to 4 hospitals in my area in a major city in the NE. Now you can have an hour long ambulance ride and the other hospitals unless you are dying or being admitted you won’t get a room.
I love seeing you lean more into these other creative avenues and just going for it! We are so much more than our healthcare jobs and I am so happy to see you setting up boundaries and doing YOU!
Kristina, all of your friends in healthcare are applauding your decision to do what is best for you, your mental health and your family! I’m a 13+ year nurse and the toxic environment that all healthcare workers are having to endure has made so many of us want to leave healthcare for good. I have a brother who left the greedy corporate world for his own mental health and sanity and has been a travel and cooking content creator for several years. He said it was the best decision of his life, has no regrets and is actually making even more money as a content creator. We only have one life and have to spend the time we do have wisely. I’d rather be happy, have my mental health intact and make less money than continue to endure the abuse of our greedy healthcare systems. Yes!! So happy for you, the biggest fallacy we learn as children is that you need to know what you "want to do when you grow up". Your job ≠ your identity, and your interests and passions should be able to evolve and grow as you do the same. You seem so happy and I'm happy you took the chance to have more balance in your life.

My Aunt was an amazing obgyn and she always regretted her career. She finally took disability for arthritis in her hands which was making surgery difficult. Two years later she died from cancer. I bet she would have done things differently had she known.
As a nurse working a busy chronically understaffed medsurg unit, we had a charge nurse quit to go work in a bagel shop. Hospitals can be soul sucking institutions.
I felt this... the money isn't worth your mental health and freedom.

I am a nurse and worked in the ER/ICU for years. Once i had my kids i went to part time then prn then quit altogether. It’s been 8 years and it was the best decision i ever made. I was able to focus my time on raising tiny little humans. I just recently went back to work as an IV drip nurse at a med spa and I absolutely love it! Have zero desire to be back in the hospital. Good luck! It’s a great decision!

You INSPIRE me. I’m so happy for you and your family. I’m currently finishing up my AA degree in Health Sciences and my BSN. However- like you, I’m currently a PCT and TBH- wanting to travel with my kids and be more present for them. (I’m a single Deaf parent to 4 under 8) and thinking about shifting my perspective to be more behind the scenes such as focusing on what’s really important to me in healthcare. For one- healthcare ASL interpreting is at a dismal place and rate right now and that’s one of my desires- to fix it and one of my goals is to set up a virtual/digital interpreting agency. It has been one of my dreams and honestly you really inspire me to literally think about changing my shift perspective to this.

I cannot contain how happy I am for you!!! I was listening to you during this video and it felt like you were speaking to my soul and verbalizing things that I couldn’t even make sense of in my head! As a pharmacist I have a unique and cool job but I am still struggling! On paper and to the outside world the job sounds so cool and amazing but I keep ending the day feeling unfulfilled and like parts of me are missing. I appreciate that you have shown people that the way something has always been done (ex: practicing medicine as your ONLY identity) is no longer necessary. And encouraging people to feel validated if they want to pursue multiple interests. I also love that you are showing that you can monetize your passions but not make it your sole purpose in life. I know in a recent video you talked about how you have no problems setting and maintaining boundaries. 2021 was the year I personally started that practice and I’m so grateful for it. Your words in this really resonated with me- “You don’t have to set yourself on fire to keep others warm.” I haven’t found a way that is easily digestible to explain to people around me the whole boundaries concept but I think this will help explain it quite well. PRN SAVED MY LIFE when I had kids. We also ran a restaurant at that time. Even 7p-7a, though brutal in OB, gave me more time. However it made me a true insomniac. You are going to be thanking yourself!!
My son changed his mind to go into medicine. I'm devastated, he got an apartment and a job at Tampa General for tuition coverage. It hurt him that his view of my workplace growing up disappeared. Maybe later he may pick up with Anes Assisting instead. When the world is "right" again.

In all honesty you should do a TED talk. We, as women, need to hear it’s okay to want to stay home, have flexibility and wanting to be moms first and stay home with our children yet think outside the box for a job.
Yes!!! This reminds me of the movie Mona Lisa Smile. At the end, one of the young females makes the point that female rights isn’t just about the right to work instead of staying home, but the freedom to choose! And just because she was chose to stay home and not work didn’t mean she wasn’t embracing female rights. She got to choose and that was the point. ❤️

Yay! Congratulations Dr. Braly! I work PRN as a PCT in dialysis because I’m going to school full time and starting my nursing program in August. Part of me feels really guilty, especially as omicron has been really affecting our clinic and my coworkers are feeling burnt out, but it selfishly has been the best decision for this season of my life. You gotta do what’s best for you! ❤️

I stepped away from my RN job this past spring. I was a surgical floor nurse for almost 20 years. I love what I did, I miss the way it used to be. It was who I was and I feel like I’ve lost my identity. I was so proud of being a nurse but the past couple years have been so toxic. I don’t regret walking away but there are times I tear up remembering all the good times. My hubby and I have owned a business for 20 years that is really growing and doing well. I’m trying to find my niche there helping more and wanting to “be wanted”. Thank you for this video. Being an RN wasn’t who I was, it was just a part of me and I will always cherish it. I did not give up my license so maybe there’s a different path for me that’s not in acute care. Keep being you, you’re amazing.

Well done. I did the same 6 months ago and am so much happier. I was over extended mentally as an RN and dreaded the situation I was in. So many problems which nobody was able to deal with or improve on with no change in sight. Hurray for us.

Awe congrats! When my daughter got her wisdom teeth out we had a freelance anesthesiologist because she needed general rather than the IV sedation. He came to the oral surgeon's office and took great care of her. I think he was out of Kingwood and came way out to Friendswood.

I think back to 8 years ago when I was a brand new ICU nurse and how different hospital life was… now it just seems so chaotic, unorganized, no accountability from all the traveling staff, patient care is just not the same sadly. I wish I could do something like you and find a creative outlet that also has a cash flow. Keep livin your dream and inspiring others!
Congratulations on doing what’s best for you and your family. I’ve been a medical assistant for a huge chunk of my career, and after a rough summer and early fall, found I was burned out. After a lot of thought and prayer, I left healthcare all together and pursued another path. I’m happier than ever, less stressed and enjoying more time with family. ❤️
Congratulations! PRN is the best. I did it for many years when my kids were young and it worked out really well. It was nice to say "no" because I had something else to do or just didn't want to do a shift in the ICU. I'm so happy for you and your family!
So proud of you. And makes me feel better about my choice which is similar. I am currently a manual osteopath but I’m not enjoying it anymore. My patients love their treatments, but after an injury I suffered, the job causes me pain. In the last 3.5 years I have been under the most mental strain I’ve ever been under, going thru a divorce after 20 years of marriage, trying to make sure my 3 girls have as supportive and good life as I can after their dad just up and left us and doesn’t want to help them or even really see them. I’ve found that helping people in dealing with similar situations as what I’ve been going thru. I’ve been trying to shift to more of a counselling career over a manual therapy career and I’ve been scared because I am the sole support for my family, but I know this is what will make me happiest and I could work from home to be closer to my family. You have given me faith that I can make this happen for myself and my family 💜

I have somebody very special that I want to share this with and it's just so great to hear another high achiever explain that every path is not on the straight and narrow. Many blessings on your journey. I think, one thing you might agree with but did not necessarily say was because of all your education and experiences, you now have options. Hi Kristina! I am so happy for you and how far you have come in your journey. I have been watching your videos probably close to a decade, and I have admired your drive and realness. My husband works for HFD, so seeing the pandemic through his eyes has been very difficult. I have so much respect for all in the medical and first responder fields. I am working on my own creative outlet in addition to my day-to-day as a project manager. You have been someone that I have looked up to in going ahead with allowing myself to do that. Kristina GOOD FOR YOU!!! I am so happy for you that you’re able to leave. I’m a nurse and sometimes I really wish I could just leave bedside nursing. We are consistently short and when we are staffed correctly, we get pulled to staff other units that are short. I also read that NYT article and it’s so true. I’m so happy for you.
I feel excited for you Kristina! My husband is a partner in a law firm, and there are many leaving law firms also (but not law). The crazy hours, the stress, demanding clients, being on call 24/7, never really being on holiday, or having a weekend off, as clients expect the same level of attention regardless. The general population is having a kind of awakening thanks to the pandemic and changing the way they choose to live life. Kudos to you for having the courage to make change.

What doing now?
I just left my practice at the beginning of the year to be a SAHM for awhile(maybe forever?)
I was nervous about the change, but I was not in a good place mentally. I love and miss my patients but I needed to do what's best for me and my family.

Yay! That's so amazing 👏 so excited for you! I have literally built a career around being a locum tenems optometrist and have loved the flexibility it provided for my family for the past 10 years! Covid has changed so much though, and I also wanted a change. So I bought my own office about 4 months ago. There were a multitude of reasons but primarily, I wanted to have more control over my schedule in the office and to pursue my business passions! Now I get to do that!
Kristina-you are so brave and I’m so happy for you. I’m a hospitalist NP and you have shown me that it’s ok to have other interests-creatively. I want to get into gardening and spending time at our family ranch and maybe start writing a children’s book. I love taking care of patients but I agree the pandemic has changed everything. Honestly I could tell during vlogmas you were “off” but I was praying for you because you are such a wonderful person with such a good heart. What a powerful video. Great decision, my brother is an ER doctor. They self roster and that has helped keep staff. They have staff working from a half day a month to over full time. Their staff are able to pursue other interests while keeping their skills up. Other hospitals using rota coordinators who ignore requests struggle to keep their staff
hmmm. I am not sure I even like hearing this... it sounds like what we do at Amazon sorting packages.. those businesses are not the same.. healthcare and sorting packages..
@@a.kaiser8965 self rostering at the hospital my brother works at, all staff of same grade and specialty meet 4 times a year and spend a few hours going through a three month period filling in the shifts. Since they started this they haven’t had to use expensive agency staff. Then as life throws curve balls they swap with each other to cover shifts.

I can totally relate. I'm an RN and I went prn after I had baby #3 and it was the most freeing feeling of actually being present for my kids. Healthcare has changed so much in the last 10 years and the constant go go go caused serious burnout for me to the point of not wanting to be in healthcare anymore.

I’m so happy for you, Kristina! I am an RN and was so unhappy for quite a few years. I was too young for burn out. Too new. So I’m July of 2020, I stepped away from the beside and took a work from home research job. It is PRN as well. It was the best decision I ever made. And to be honest, I’m not sure I would go back to “regular nursing” again. Excited for you and to see how far you go!

I'm so happy for you ! That is a hard decision to make, but it seems right for you. You look so happy. I worked full time as an RN, but cut back my hours more and more with each kid I had. Health care is very demanding, both physically and mentally, so sometimes you just need to step back. I went on call for many years and made my own schedule so I could be more present for my family. I never regretted it.
Congratulations! And kudos for speaking up about the culture shift within corporate medicine and society's misplaced anger towards doctors and nurses. The problem is bigger than this pandemic and will ultimately compromise patient care. Most of these people don't understand the scientific method let alone identify how healthcare policies and "mismanagement" create the chaos we suffer from today. We need to treat our healthcare providers well, otherwise, there may be very few left.

Thank you for sharing this! I’m starting med school in the fall and am a long way from being a fully trained physician, but it’s nice to know that there’s a possibility of flexibility in my future career and medicine can be a passion in my life, but not the only one!
