  • My Hermann's is 10 years old in July this year (2013), I feed her on dandelions, wild flowers and a special tortoise pellet formula for complete nutrition and a bit of fruit and veg including banana, apple, carrot, sweetcorn, pea, cucumber. I tend to not feed her salad stuff very often though as it doesn't have much nutrition for them:)

    Hello, I just have a little query about bathing tortoises.
    I try to bathe mine very regularly, and I use this bathroom sink to do it, usually after bringing him in after a long day wandering around in his pen outside.
    I fill the water to what I reckon is a good temperature and put him in and he seems to relax. After a while the water cools and I go to refill it.
    I try to bathe him for longer, to assist with defecation and such.
    But after that first or second refill he usually tries to clamber out of the sink, to no avail due to the slippery sides.
    I'm pretty confident that the waters I use shouldn't make him uncomfortable, but me and my family have had small arguments over whether it's cruel to keep him in the bath when he seems to want out.
    What do you guys think?
    If it seems like he should want out after around 5 minutes in the dip (about as long as it takes for it to cool the first time) should I take him straight out, or should I stick to my guns and keep him in longer, 'cause I've found before that it seems to help him defecate usually after the second refill at least.

      Let your tortoise do what he wants, as long as he has access to bathing daily he'll be fine. They can defocate without bathing also so don't worry.

      So...I just lost my dog and I have no idea if it was related (vet says whole litter of pups was sick and treated and subsequently died), however....I used a bowl that I bathed the tortoise in...washed it out in hot water and then MAY HAVE used it again to let the dog drink from. I cannot remember. The dog got diarrhea and died within one day. I was told to designate bowls and washing areas only for your tortoise. Never ever use your sink or tub or commonly shared with other animals or humans because their stool carries salmonella.

    I'll be getting one soon but I'm not sure on gender. Is there much personality/size difference?

    Can anyone suggest why my tortoise doesn't appear to be defecating much?
    I have considered the idea of worms or the sort, but I'm hoping that it's something more fixable, seeing as the local vets aren't acquainted with reptiles.
    Since Spring started I've been feeding him weed leaves, clovers, dandylions, daisies, and these blades of grass-like weeds that I don't know the name of, along with a sprinkling of vitamin powder.
    Lately, I've been aiming to bathe him at least once a week. Every day ideally, with consistently warm water.
    I believe the last time he defecated was 3+ weeks ago.
    He still appears to be eating with enthusiasm, but not all in one go. When I provide his food, he often eats a small amount ravenously, and then loses interest. By the morning, he'd have had a second helping and more has been eaten.
    Do you suppose he's in desperate need of help?

      I don't know about this but I heard feeding your tortoise daisies is bad for them xxx

      Tortoises sometimes like to wait until their food gets dried and crispy

    • @untiltheend2722
      @untiltheend2722 Před 5 lety

      I would suggest purchasing a electrical scale and mark down its weight daily, if you see a rapid decrease then it's a sign your tortoise has worms.
      Another recommendation is to feed the tortoises chow, you can purchase this online or any pet stores that sells reptile products. Feed it this with calcium added weekly. I'm thinking it's a diatary problem, feeding any tortoise just vegetables and fruits can ause serious damage internally, may cause blockage in their intestines. Maybe start here, even though this comment was left here 2 years ago I'm still looking out for you!!!

    What would give a tortoise this much energy besides the room temperature? My own tortoise is about half as old as this one, and rarely goes half as fast.
    Is it a personality thing, or should I look into it?

    • @markyyyyyyyy321
      @markyyyyyyyy321  Před 10 lety

      Sometimes she isn't this fast. I don't know, she sunbathes a lot in the patio window but through the night she sleeps on her heat matt. She goes outside all day in the summer where she can burrow in the garden under my bushes in and around the soil. Try and give your tortoise a lot of room to run around. Sometimes my tortoise doesn't even like it outside even when it's a nice temperature, she'll come to the back door and climb in her self. They are more clever than people think. My tortoise knows her way around my house and the entire garden really well. Got really good eyesight as well.

      My tortoise has a spacey enclosure, but perhaps heating is the problem. The last heatmat I got was useless, so I discarded it.
      I often turn on this heatlamp for a while, which heats him up wonderfully, but we don't have the money to keep his space warm for more than a few hours every few days.

      I think my tortoise ate them all.

      Mayeur000Donz How is your tortoise getting on? Still a slow mover? It could also be a personality thing, my tortoise runs around nowadays. I bought her a reptile heat lamp, I think it charges her up like a battery then she goes mad so I have to put her in the garden so she can run around.

    Did you get him as a baby? How is he so personable? Most tortoises I've seen are so lethargic and generally afraid of interaction.

      +markyyyyyyyy321 No problem! I actually found out where I can get one -- now i just need to figure out what food to buy and what sort of a cage. What does your tortoise eat? And does he have a large sized enclosure?

    • @markyyyyyyyy321
      @markyyyyyyyy321  Před 8 lety

      John Parks brilliant. My tortoise has a 4' × 2' enclosure with a ceramic ballast clamp lamp. She eats dandelions from the garden plus other weeds. She also likes some strawberry, apple and banana. Might try it in a smoothie for her! She also likes rocket.
