- 270 Winchester Federal Fusion 130 grain ammo ballistics gel test fired from a Winchester Model 70 Featherweight with 22 inch barrel.
Range gear: masonoutdoors.com
Leather gear: www.masonleather.com
All shots are fired from a distance of 100 yards so as to encompass the majority of common real world hunting scenarios.
I will be shooting into 10% ballistics gel from www.clearballistics.com that has been calibrated to meet the FBI ballistics testing protocol.
While ballistics gel isn’t an exact proxy for big game, small game, predators or defensive situations, it does provide a repeatable medium through which to test various bullets and ammunitions against each other.
With each type of ammo tested I collect data on bullet penetration depth, bullet weight retention, bullet expansion and muzzle velocity.
For reference, bullet expansion is measured at the widest expanded point using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Caliper.
Bullet weight is measured using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Scale after having removed as much ballistics gel as possible from the expanded bullets.
Bullet velocity is measured using a ProChronoPal chronograph set approximately 7’ from the shooting bench.
I am fully aware that a chronograph measuring bullet velocity from 7’ away from the muzzle is going to register a slower velocity than if velocity were measured directly at the muzzle, but that difference is going to be so small as to be all but irrelevant in regards to comparison of actual measured velocity versus factory stated velocity.
My goal with these ballistics gel tests is to provide hunters like you and I with the most objective information possible to help us make the best choice for our particular hunting situation.
The results of these tests are my own and I cannot guarantee the same or similar performance on your part. The views and opinions expressed in this video are solely my own.
All videos are filmed in a safe and controlled environment on a private range with all applicable safety precautions by a trained professional. - Zábava

I accepted Jack O’Connor’s recommendation to own a .270 Winchester rifle/ammo, and love that decision.
Again, please dont ever stop making videos like these!!!
💯
I switched to this last season for my 270. Wish I had a long time ago. It’s the most accurate round I’ve ever shot from my rifle and it performs perfectly on game!
I’ve also found this and just the basic PowerShok line to be extremely accurate in every caliber I’ve tried. Federal is doing it right.
I’ll be trying the powershok in my new Ruger made Marlin 336 this year. I landed on that ammo because of his well it did in ur video.
Beautiful Rifle and Scope Combo Mason!
Top shelf product. Appreciate the good tests & results of good ammo.
I shot a massive boar here in Mississippi with this exact load. I hit him 2 times broadside in the shoulder from less than 50 yds. He ran about 25 yds and piled up. Both bullets were very much intact stopped in the opposite side, Most any other bullet would have exploded at that range. Fusion is the BOMB for most game inside 250 yds!
Yes,yes,yes,i like your comment,Fusion is a BOMB!
Thank you! Where do you hunt?@@donaldbougie694
Back in the 70's the best bullets were and arguably are the Nosler Partition and Speer Grand Slam. The Fusion Bullets are the Grand Slam minus the cannalure. They still perform the same and at a lower price it's a win win situation. Remember high BC'S don't kill controlled expansion does. This is why in the real world Fusions and Federal Premium Nosler Partition are the best. Great video.
Glad to be of service!
Speer invented the Jacket Core Bonding Process. The regular standard grade SPEER Hot Cor Bullet was the best performing non premium bullet on the market . Federal and SPEER are now in the same Giant Corporation and the Speer Process is used in the Fusion and other bullets like Trophy bonded Bear Claw. etc. used it after the patent ran out.
The killing power of a Nosler Partition has to been witnessed in order to believe it. They are devastating.
You have reason at 100%,,i like your comment, you,re honest and veridict!
In my experience bonded bullets don't kill any better than soft High BC bullets, or any soft bullet. They just make less mess, which means less damage, really. As long as a bullet doesn't ' blow up' on a shoulder, it will kill. I'm still to see High bc bullets like eldm or x for example fail to penetrate- (try shooting them at some thick ply wood). I'd love to see a test of 130gn ttsx out of an 06- I reckon that'd be a great combination of devastating expansion and petals flying off, and very deep penetration. Seeing a bullet that held together does nothing for me-it doesn't tell me how deep it went or how much damage was done inside. Just my .02
I use the same 270 130grain fusions here in Kansas , works great 👍🏻
I"m real impressed with this video, great job. I do some leather too (sheaths for my knives) so i'm doubly stoked. Subscribed!
Fusion is good stuff! Very accurate and also great performance on deer and hogs from my 270 and 6.8 SPC.
Your videos are highly informative and very appreciated
Glad to be of service!
Nice rifle set up. Good video, this are favorite type of videos.
Thanks!
Awesome all around bullet and video, thanks
Very Noticeable , massive Expansion as soon as it entered gel block; inch or Two. I Love How a 270 cal leaves good Exit holes on deer.
Some one gave me three boxes of 280 Rem 140 Fusions. The accuracy was a little over 1” at 100 yards and the velocity from a 24” barrel was 50 fps slower than advertised. I haven’t used it on game since I reload 140 Accubonds, but your test shows it would certainly work just fine.
Bought a camo Mossberg .270 this year. Reloaded a box of Tipped Trophy Bonded bear Claws. For whatever reason my gun wasn't happy with them. Bought a box of Fusions loaded ammo because of the For Sale label on them. More or less just to see if my gun wasn't going to group anything. WRONG ! 4 shots and it was Zeroed at 100yds. And Now after seeing your gel test, this will be my opening day gun and ammo here in Arkansas.
Gonna check out your leather works as well, those looked really cool.
Thanks Bruh !
Awesome results. I use to buy that stuff when I worked at Cabela’s. But once my Dad, youngest brother and I started reloading a couple decades ago I have used 130 Nosler BTs since.
The Fusion ammo was accurate and devastating for sure
Nice looking rounds
I have a H&R rifle in 270 man it shoots great
this is the perfect deer ammo, shot tens with it and it usually comes out the other side of the lungs as if you threw a baseball through
Sweet video! Love watching your videos, can you do a video with Winchester XP 130 grain in 270
That leather is real nice 👌
Thanx for doing this test. I use Fusion in my 243, 270, & 308, great bullets & not too expensive compared to other bonded bullets
Federal Fuzion 150 and 180 gr shoots fantastic out of my 308 Ruger American predator 22” barrel.
Love that model 70 featherweight
This one is actually a Featherweight “Custom High Grade” with flush swivel studs, upgraded wood and hand cut checkering, got it as a package with its twin in 30-06, super cool rifles glad I found them.
I would like to see you try the 150 grain federal fusion in the 270.
This is the one I was super interested to see. I’ve never heard anything bad about Federal ammo or their Fusion line
Exactly, never a bad word about it ever. All I’ve ever heard were glowing reviews and experiences. You can’t really say that about anything else, there’s always at least something negative, even if small.
@@masonoutdoors_masonleather every caliber this is available in I’ve seen awesome results. From the .223 and up
Quick to the point tests ,,,, luv it ,,,, would like to see 100 gr 243 fusion tested
Coming soon, I think they’re 95 grains though
@@masonoutdoors_masonleather I'd love to see the fusion 62 grain MSR tested or the regular fusion maybe you already have though lol I'll look, also is it possible to have you make a chest holster for a Ruger gp100 4 inch
The fusion is an excellent bullet. I recall doing my own ballistics tests and being just blown away by the expanded diameter with how it still hung together. Very “hydraulic” bullet terminally. That and the discontinued Winchester power max bonded really opened up
Your velocity findings echo my own. The 150 grain fusion in my 22 inch 270 barrel chronoed at 2700, not 2850. Winchester super x actually shoots faster than the box says. Remington sucks all around 🤣
2.7x expansion. Thats just amazing.
I've been a Hornady guy my whole life, These videos are really making me think about switching to Federal Fusion, I have no reason to leave Hornady but this stuff looks great
If it ain't broke. Why fix it?
I like watching your videos on testing 👍 now I've only shot Fusion well part of one box back in 2014 ish. Had a nice buck show up early one morning 50yrs or so I fired a Fusion out of my 308 and sounded like a cheap firecracker going off and never hit it. Very mild recoil like half loaded. Needless to say Never used them again no confidence in them after that. It was a fresh box at that time.
Another great one. Enough said.
I own a Winchester Model 70 Super Grade in .270 Winchester and the only ammo I use these days is the Hornady Superformance SST 130 grain. With a 24" barrel, that ammo produces 3200 fps and is one of the flattest-trajectory bullets you can get for a .270 Winchester, that even outperforms any 6.5 Creedmore in bullet-drop. Try out those Hornady SSTs when you get a chance, I'm sure you'll like them. Great videos, btw. Keep up the good work.👍
I did try the 270 superformance 130 gr SST. I found the bullets to be soft and they came apart and didn't deliver the penetration I wanted.
I've used the 30-06 federal fusion 150 grain on deer. It performed excellent. There are some pretty big deer up here in wi
That load flattens big wild boar in Fla. too! Always an exit too.
My 308 loves this and hornady interlock. I’m going to try it in 243 at some point, it’s a little high priced at the moment 😊
I love the .270 I just bought these rounds in 150 grain. Should really hold together on deer and black bear here in PA.
Great ammo, they match the velocity indicated (at least in my rifle), kill fast and penetrate enough and have consistent and tight powder charges
I use the 150 grains out of my 270wsm one Elk. Great bullet.
After 30 years using Federal (premium) Fusion 150 gr in my 270 A bolt, they dropped it this last year. Great for long ranges and larger deer. After the box and a half I have stashed away, might have to try Hornady. But that's like 30 deers away. 🦌
FYI, just got three boxes of 150 grain from Bud's at 34.99 a box! My go to load for my M77!
Its cheap, accurate, and performs great. I wouldnt hesitate to use it. I have it for 2 calibers, so when i cant get barnes ttsx ill use them as back up ammo. To be honest i dont think ive ver heard of any negative feedback about this ammo, and have seen videos of the results. It performs above it's price point. If you see it, buy it.
Exactly, never a bad word about it ever. All I’ve ever heard were glowing reviews and experiences. You can’t really say that about anything else, there’s always at least something negative, even if small.
Would love to see this versus the Barnes TTSX versus Barnes LRX
I’d love to see more 270 tests. Especially 130 vs 150 Gn. Also Hornady makes American whitetail in 140. A comparison between 130 140 150 would be neat.
Really disappointed Federal Fusion (premium) dropped their 150 gr loading in 270. Especially for longer distances and larger body deer.
2 years ago I shot a button buck (thought it was a doe) with a 130 gr interlock American whitetail. He went DRT and expansion was impressive at exit. My rifle likes interlocks, but I may try out these fusions also.
@@gordonsullivan2694 I just received my order of three boxes of 150 grain from Bud's. 34.99 a box!
I really like the model 70 featherweight but prefer a 24 inch barrel for the 270. Consequently, my 270 featherweight went down the road and my remaining 270's have 24 inch barrels. I have frequently read that those two inches of barrel are suppose to make a noticeable difference in velocity of the 270. Will have to do some testing.
I've found the. 270 to be the hammer of Thor. I'd like a couple of extra inches but I've lived with a short barrel so long that I know it stills works fine.
I use the 150 grain and its pretty good
You try any bergers? Hoping for 140-145 grainers to work. I know with 150s, many rifles may not like the slower twist, that most 270s are, and some guys seem to say they do fine.
I used this load last year on a nick buck, worked fine but ive seen better internal damage from 130gr hornady interlock bullets ....oddly I did get closer to 3100fps with the fusions in my 22" howa, I must have bought a hotter lot
Mason out of interest what factory ammo have you chosen for your .270?
For the money these may be the best factory ammo. The ES is always great. For long range there are better options but these will service most hunters. Unfortunately my 7mm-08 doesn't shoot them well.
I would also be curious how the horned day, American hunter 140 g would perform.
Just like with the cost of ammo and guns going up in price, so to has the cost of reloading components over the last few years and then some. I'm seriously thinking about trying Federal ammo out in several of my rifles and selling all of the reloading gear for these rifles and just stick to Federal factory. For the time it takes to reload, along with the cost, I think I would be better off. As always Mason thanks for sharing!
Indeed, I stopped reloading several years ago. Reloading (to me) only makes sense if you’re competing, reloading incredibly expensive calibers (think safari stuff) or your time isn’t very valuable, or of course if you just really like to. It’s not worth it to me. I have all my stuff stored though in case.
Works great for elk too
Can you do the federal fusion 140 grain in the 6.5creedmoor?
@masonleather i would love to know your recommendation. I have a 270 WSM and the ammo availability isnt that great. The easiest to find is the winchester extreme point and they shoot awfully out of my rifle. The other day my local outdoor shop had federal fusion 150 gr and the hornady 145 gr eld x. It seems hornadys 145 gr 270 cal eld x does pretty good unlike other loads in the eld x line but hard to knock federal fusions based off your videos. How do you think the 150s would compare to the 130s in the fusion load? And how do you think the hornady eld x would do against the fusions? since the eld x 145 gr 270 cal seems to be doing pretty good. Love the videos man!
Glad to be of service! Indeed, the 270 WSM (all the WSMs really) are a tough bunch to find factory loads for, but I know there’s a niche following that really loves the 270 WSM. If it were me, I wouldn’t touch the Deer Season XP or the ELDX, those are the top 2 most inconsistent performers I’ve tested across all calibers, and just because the .277 145gr ELDX works sometimes doesn’t mean it will all the time, or even most of the time, based on my own observations and tons of input from other hunters. The 150gr Fusion would absolutely be my top choice between those 3 loads. I imagine out of the WSM the 150 will perform a lot like the 130 from a regular 270 Winchester. I’d stock up on those Fusions and not look back. Long-term, if you’re going to stay with the WSM, reloading would be worthwhile.
@@masonoutdoors_masonleather thats kinda what i was thinking myself. Definitely gonna get into the reloading world soon but just wanted to secure some good factory ammo for now. Thanks a lot man! Keep the videos coming!
My browning blr 308 Win and tikka m65 300 win mag loves the federal fusion. I’ve taken moose and black bears with them and they don’t go far.
I have read from a few comments that Federal dropped the Fusion 150 gr in the .270 I bought 2 boxes 2 months ago and see it offered on Federals site. Must have brought it back. I have yet to test it out of my Rem 700 SPS Stainless. It likes the 150 gr Blue Box stuff. I don`t understand why Fedaral slowed the Fusion loads down though. Kinda odd. May be a reason for it though.
Love federal
Fed prem 140 Berger hollowpnts have been nocking bucks over for me no complaints most all the energy stays in the deer I'm a federal fan will try fusion n accent
I've found the fusion to be good, but never the best in any particular area of performance. Never a particularly high BC for the weight, never sub MOA accuracy, never any jaw dropping tissue damage or a huge blood trail and I feel like the good majority of the energy ends up in the dirt or a tree behind the animal.
Nothing bad to say about it but don't believe the hype is all I'm saying.
I use that ammo with a tikka t3x 270 and I have no problem tipping a deer over.
Using this load here in Alberta, Canada
I think you should show the groups you get with these bullets. Ive tested some hunting loads that have great performance but have a damn 2 inch spread at 100. Then some performed less favorably in terms of weight retention / expansion but the groups were 1 moa.
Accuracy testing is far too subjective to be of any real use to anyone. Rifles differ in what they’ll shoot well, skill level of shooters differ drastically. It would be circlejerkology. A 2 MOA setup is perfectly fine for medium/large game hunting at any reasonable distance. A 1 MOA group isn’t doing anything to kill a deer any deader.
If you find any of the cheap S&B 270 150g soft point, would you mind testing them? I picked some up a couple weeks ago just to sight in a new to me Savage 111 and dang if they didn't shoot under half an inch. I couldn't believe it.
Absolutely
I've never shot a Federal Fusion load in any caliber that did not perform well.
Power Shok 130gn. is a good one for elk.
Do they make a heavier weight of of the 270 fusion such as a 140? It would probably have more penetration.
You can get 150
My .270 loves the 150gr federal fusions.
Respectively
I have a video suggestion. Try some PPU Rifleman (Prvi Partizan) ammo on gel. My 243 loves this, but I'm wondering how effective...
I’ve got that coming up soon, both 90gr and 100gr
@@masonoutdoors_masonleather Thanks. Looking forward to that!
As usual, 👍
Federal should be the first to sell Commercial 160gr 270Win. 1-10 Twist will stabilize 160gr in a 24" barrel.
I agree. A 24” 1/10 .270 shooting 160’s would be an absolute monster. The sectional density at that weight would put it head and shoulders above almost every other hunting load. The 150’s already have more SD than a 180 in .308 cal.
I believe these are Speer Gold Dot projectiles Federal is using. They appear to be nearly identical in performance and appearance. Great round.
Has anyone taken down a moose or elk with 130 grain bullets or are 150s better?
Any plans on testing the Fusion 6.5 Creedmoor load?
Absolutely. I can guarantee you it’d be outstanding, based on every other Fusion load so far.
@@masonoutdoors_masonleather Awesome! I can’t wait!
270 copper impact please
You should look into the grizzly ammo company loads
Maybe way down the line, too niche at this time, trying to get the more common stuff done first
*respectively
Crazy they look just like a gold dot
Factory velocity is from 24" barrels. You generally lose 25-50 fps for every loss of a inch of barrel under 24". That is is factory standard.
Glad you brought that up. I will give you a generous 2950 fps. Guess what my 24 inch Bergara 6.5 prc is getting with factory 130 grain Federal terminal ascent...low 3060 high 3114. But remember, the 270 is way more powerful.
What’s the length of barrel out of that rifle?
22 inch.
i wish you could buy these bullets to reload
I've used this load to kill my first and only black bear... Did amazing
Another great video, but do us a favor, DO the foot pound of energy for these videos
“Respectively”
Shot 1/4 groups at 50m with it yesterday. It out done all my other ammo in regards to accuracy and I had 9 other bullets out there. This will be the only .270 ammo I will buy.
Those fusions are purposely down loaded for semi automatic rifles just like Remington factory ammunition. My 30/06 fires a 150 grain bullet that same speed. To get proper velocities, get yourself some Winchester factory ammunition.
I was gonna say that fusion guff was b.s., but it's apparently not.
This stuff performs every single time.
I'm sorry, but Fusion primers, consistently, blew with my 270win and my 270wsm. Especially the 270wsm. For my rifles, Fusion is a poor choice. Being honest folks.
Federal 130s would TOTALLY pulverize a deers lungs ,i mean turn them to bloody saw dust
Not a fan of this ammo. Good accuracy but poor blood trail, hardly even a trail at all without going through bone (in the rib cage) at ranges under 100 yards. 3 deer all the same story, no blood, good accuracy and deer still ran 40-50 yards. In the thick veg of GA I’d rather have blood or be drt. Hornady ELD-X is a better option from my experience
What would explain this? This ammo seems to have better expansion and weight retention than eld-x. I assume you’re getting an exit hole? I’ve found bullets that fail to exit almost never leave much blood.
I have the opposite experience. 30-06 150 grain and it put two holes in the deer and turned the heart to mush. Blood trail was a straight line to the deer
@@jeremys8360 two holes… so an entrance and an exit? I think we agree! Much better to have both for a clear blood trail!
Respectfully...it's 'respectively'. Thanks for the tip on Federal fusion.
I would love to do the carnivore diet at your house.
I was thinking of using this ammo in .270 or 30-06 on my elk hunt. Probably going to bring both cause everyone says bring two rifles just in case one goes down.
Idk about anybody else, but I don't need to see what the box looks like. Otherwise, I enjoy your vids.
I show the box info so that when a bullet fails I’ve shown the manufacturer claims right in the video. I don’t really care to film that part either but there’s a reason for everything in these vids. People get real pissy when their favorite ammo fails and I call out it’s B.S.
