    I'm very glad that I was able to share some information about the F6! I wish Zoom had made this particular function more intuitive to use. Thanks for making this video, I'm favoriting it for when I inevitably forget how to do it again two years from now, and have to search for it on CZcams lol!

    Sometimes its a nice surprise when you find out a way to sort something that's been bugging you for a while. Great that a follow CZcamsr helped out with your dilemma. I look forward to my own F6 in about 3 weeks. No doubt I will be scratching my head a bit too, especially without having to be precise with gain settings when using 32 bit float. - Regards, Peter.

    I'm confused by the video actually. The video seems to imply that you 'can' record in 32 bit float in your DAW. But based on the comments below it sounds like it can't. I even tried doing some test yells and it doesn't go in 32 bit float mode in interface mode. Went in 24 and 32 bit mode as well. Didn't change the outcome. You still can't be in 32 bit float in your DAW.

    • @ChrisSpiegl
      @ChrisSpiegl  Před 2 lety +1

      And from what I remember I am saying as much in the video. This video is about the feature that the F6 can internally record 32bit float while you get a 24bit signal in your DAW.
      And that - to me - was a revelation because initiallyI thought that when you want the F6 as an audio interface you'd only get 24bit recording on the SD card.
      So for additional clarification:
      - the Zoom F6 (as of right now) can NOT deliver a 32bit float track via audio interface mode.
      - the Zoom F6 only brings 24bit to the DAW via audio interface mode.
      - however, it is possible to record 32bit float on the device while you are also using the F6 as an audio interface with 24bit going to the computer.
      Hope that clarifies things more for you.

      @@ChrisSpiegl Ah ok that makes things clear up a bit. I wish it had a DAW mode where it would go at 32 bit float mode though. It just seems like such a peculiar thing to leave out. Also I tried fumbling trying to get it to work but I wasn't able to figure it out. I clicked REC -> Dual (24 +32), File Format Poly. Then I chose Float. Then I chose Audio Interface, Stereo Mix (PC) and still got 24 bit recording. couldn't find the 32 bit float. All in all, it's so odd they make this so confusing haha

    • @Dracomies
      @Dracomies Před 2 lety +1

      OMG never mind!! When you enable AIF mode it allows you to record in interface mode but also off computer at the same time. Holy moly! This is a game changer

    • @ChrisSpiegl
      @ChrisSpiegl  Před 2 lety +2

      @@Dracomies/videos Glad you also found the AIF with REC mode. I also believe that it would have been better for Zoom to include True 32bit float audio interface to DAW. But alas… maybe next time. It really is a game changer to have 32bit float + 24bit in DAW.
      I believe the 24bit are usually enough when you are recording into a computer (since you are actively monitoring that). But it's also good to have 32bit float when it's neeed.

    • @Dracomies
      @Dracomies Před 2 lety +1

      @@ChrisSpiegl Yeah this is so much better. What I've been doing up until this point is using an XLR splitter. Having the splitter connect to a standard interface, ie MOTU M2 and then the splitter connect to the Zoom F6 so I could field calls (ie a live session for voiceover) but have a 32 bit float backup. But I think with AIF mode, I might not need to do that anymore as this could handle both use-cases.

    A bit confusing explanation Chris. Consider this simple scenario: if I connect a microphone to the Zoom F6 that is in turn connected to my MacBook Pro running a DAW (e.g. Nuendo), can the F6 pass a 32 bit signal to the DAW to records or not?

    • @ChrisSpiegl
      @ChrisSpiegl  Před 3 lety +3

      I tried to make this pretty clear. The Zoom F6 can NOT pass a 32bit signal to the MacBook. It's only capable to record that signal in 32bit and pass a 24bit signal to your DAW.
      If you need 32 bit in your DAW directly recorded, you'll have to look at the MixPre lineup as far as I know.

      What would be the point of that?

    • @BrewerShettles
      @BrewerShettles Před 2 lety +2

      @Chris Spiegl - Epic Audio w/ Video is the point. Connecting ZOOM F6 to GP10 upfront lets you later line up HQ ZOOM 96kHz 32bit Floating Point audio tracks to GP10 video and audio in Vegas Pro19 (PC) or Luma Fusion (iPad). GP10 Audio = single stereo wave. Lining up Zoom F6 tracks to muted audio GP wav, gives you individual HQ separate wav files with your video. If you want, go into Reaper DAW and "Master" each HQ audio file before later lining up HQ ZOOM audio trks to muted GP10 audio tracks in video editing software. Why do all this? Musicians need great performance + brilliant sound. Like in Hollywood - make a "click" before each recording take - gives a sharp wav ref point at the beginning of the song.

    • @ChrisSpiegl
      @ChrisSpiegl  Před 2 lety +1

      @@BrewerShettles To do this ideally, you’d have to record the individual tracks on F6 and additionally record the l/r stereo mix down in the F6. This is because you’d get the F6 mic down in the line out which you’d record on the GP10 to sun with.
      However, an even better way would be to use the Timecode signal from the Zoom F6 and send that to the GP10. Then in DavinciResolve or Tentacle Sync Studio? You can line things up without the whole audio syncing and it’s frame accurate.

      i dont think there is an issue as long as you have a "line in" and not a "Mic in" as an input on your camera, if you only have a "mic in" input on your camera than simply use an attenuator cable between the two devices to get rid of the hiss.

    • @ChrisSpiegl
      @ChrisSpiegl  Před 3 lety +1

      @@corymacdougall3469 That is true - you do not have any issue if you have a line-in on your camera. However, it's still an oversight on part of Zoom. Why would a signal get worse and worse as you make it less loud? That makes no sense and should have been fixed to begin with.

    • @ChrisSpiegl
      @ChrisSpiegl  Před 3 lety +2

      @@anyuisbjoern You would need this to record the mix into a camera as a backup or for scratch audio. Sadly the line out is too loud if you do not have a line in on your camera. You can, however, use an attenuator cable: czcams.com/video/JyQNbOj2PxI/video.html

      That's correct. It's a remarkable software upgrade. However, this only applies to those who want to use the Zoom F6 as a multi-track audio interface to record into DAW like programs. If you intend to use it for live-streaming, then I would still stick to the 24+32bit recording + 24bit audio interface.

    Hey Chris, your F6 Videos helped me a lot with my gear. Thanks a lot!!!!!
    I had a issue where I used the F6 as interface in the AIF mode to record a Zoom Call on SD-Card. I also had a backup over Line-Out to my Phone.
    Now something magical but curious happened.
    The audio on the line out and on the headphones there where our own voice loud and the counterpart over the zoom/laptop quit low volume. But on the SD Card it was the other way around. The Laptop/Zoom-Coubterpart voice were loud and our own voice were more low volume.
    Any Idea why this were happening?

    • @ChrisSpiegl
      @ChrisSpiegl  Před 3 lety +2

      Thank you for your feedback, that's always great to hear.
      Now about your truly strange experience:
      1) lucky you actually did get the recording of all the files on your phone and internally.
      2) did the same loud silent thing happen in the Stereo Mixdown file? Or did you record that?
      3) The one idea I have about what may have been going on here is the different ways you can set the faders to work on the Zoom F6 and maybe checking into this video can help about that: czcams.com/video/caFWpTk3Aak/video.html
      About (3): My guess is that your faders are set to Reference Level meaning once you started recording the volume which will be recorded into the individual channel files will not be changed after that. But the output which you send out to the Line out will be impacted by the track knobs on the Zoom F6.
      I would just take the files send them through a loudness normalization and then start the edit so that you have a nice and even audio signal for each person speaking.
      Cheers and please let me know if any of this was helpful 🌸.

      I am not planning to cover this update. Though it is
      a massive one. Though a friend of mine made a video about the upgrade recently: czcams.com/video/gX5enGtCjkE/video.html
      My thoughts: it's incredible that they now added this feature. For anyone live streaming and wanting a 32bit float backup, I'd still go with the AiF with Rec mode (aka Audio Interface with Recording) since then you get 24bit on your computer + 32bit float on the device.
      If you just want a 6 XLR input 32bit float audio interface, then use the new capabilities and you'll be very happy.
