    This is literally the conversation I’ve been wanting to hear in the IDW more than any other. It was brilliant, and meaningful to the lives of apes in the real world. It’s time for the best of us progressives to awaken as left libertarians, calling out the bad actors among our own, and all of the real betrayals of our institutions. We need capitalism 2.0, more free that corporatism, more destributive than communism, and driven by unprofitable, unregulated and publically financed basic science research that will better us all. Our digital era was born on semiconductors that the government researched, and then the free market innovated on. We can do this.

    • @johnped37
      @johnped37 Před 5 lety

      AvenueSU unprofitable science? Isn’t profitable applied science the foundation of our technological revolutions? Capitalism 2.0 is free market capitalism with coherent consumerism, we control the corps with our money. All we need is the gov to let the people regulate rather than static asymmetrical interferences that are often misinformed. Stop crony capitalism by removing representative power and redirect it via popular vote. Corps then have to lobby/advertise the American people rather than wine and dine one person. Freedoms given to the people result in a higher nodal network with more feedback loops. Government interference is analogous to giving the human body a drug unaware of how exactly it works and the side effects. That is how most drugs are we do not understand the human body fully. The answers are not in drugs, but in a healthy lifestyle, and homeostasis of a System too complex for us to understand.

      Out of Blue Pills On one hand, I like where you are going with this...
      On the other hand, now that the historical record is out, McCarthy 1.0 was actually quite naive about the extent of CPUSA influence in Hollywood and generally. His punishment for attempting to even expose the tip of the iceberg was, they made his very name synonymous with paranoia for generations hence.
      That is what real influence allows one to do. Stalin's Active Measures campaign was quite real and quite successfull. Their blacklist campaign was an order of magnitude larger than McCarthy's.

    I would like to see Eric create Prager U style videos (but much longer of course) to explain the economic problems he describes for the vast majority of us who need to start at the most basic level. And Ben, check out The Disappearance of Moral Knowledge by Dallas Willard and bring his students into the conversation. I appreciate the IDW but as a follower of Jesus, I see clearly that you are missing an important voice in your search for truth without the Christian perspective in your discussions. Jordan Peterson has certainly invited Christians into the discussion but he does not personally represent a Christ following (as opposed to Christian) worldview (which would be very "Jewish" when it comes to care of the poor.) And I think that the people at Reasons to Believe would be delighted with Eric's approach to science.

    I've seen his very points in the sciences myself. The encouragement in the graduate community in physics is to think small. Just push the envelope of knowledge incrementally. This is in my reckoning a bad thing because we are de-incentivising the deBroglies, people who want to write a world-shattering PhD thesis and are instead being told to play it safe.

    • @sorsocksfake
      @sorsocksfake Před 6 lety +7

      Not sure that's necessarily wrong though. Almost all science is a matter of small increment, almost by definition. As the picture gets better, there are more and more details to fill in, and fewer and fewer revolutions to discover.
      On top of that, the vast majority of people probably are quite incapable of the big paradigm shifts. That requires both a very high intelligence, and very special abilities to think in different manners. These people seem to both have very open minds, but also an extremely technical one (i.e. being able to strictly follow the mathematics). This I think is an exceedingly rare, almost contradictory, combination.

      It's still sad to think of those who might be the very mind you describe stifled by this sentiment. I think that if you meet some qualitative characteristics that it is possible to learn to be the open mind. We have cultivated a culture that does the opposite, teaching grad students to truncate their dreams.

    • @BarnJ
      @BarnJ Před 6 lety

      To some extent these grad students you describe could be truncating their own dreams by placating to their advisors' wishes. I was a humanities grad student, so it's a little different, but I gave a lot of pushback on the critical commentary to my thesis. I think to some extent, students at that level just want to say screw it and be done with it. However, if you are committed to your work and offer valid reasons for rebelling against norms, your advisors will typically be open to that (and hopefully be pleasantly surprised to not simply have yet another Yes Man in their midst).
