    Ben is a good interviewer. He gives his guests not only time to answer questions but also the space to be themselves. It's a sincere conversation, not a contrived showpiece.

      chris cromeyn I agree. However I was surprised I detected Ben being more deferential than I expected. If I were face to face with either of them I would act like an embarrassing fan boy. Mr Shapiro was an excellent host. He laughed politely and provided much seemingly positive body language. Whatever the reason, this was the best interview of Adam I've heard in a long time.

      Hit it on the head. Anyone can ask good questions, their are writers a plenty for that... but the ability to give them the space to answer and speak to be themselves, without an agenda to prove with a hack job edit, is truly refreshing.

    Adam's so right about virtue signaling is just narcissism.

    I used to listen to Love Line on KROQ in the 90's and I remember on Adam's final episode, in the mid-2000's, as he and Dr. Drew were saying their final goodbyes, he was talking about continuing 'radio' from his home. It seemed like a losing proposition, even sad. The concept of 'podcast' was on the level of 'pirate radio'; very esoteric. Later, I heard stories about Adam doing shows on the computer. lol. Still didn't get it. He was there before the technology became universal, and everyone who does a podcast now owes him at least one beer.

      I was surprised that he said "poor people"...it's just people who need money who take these jobs. Back in the '70s and '80s boys trying to help pay for college took these jobs. These types of jobs are hard and used to pay 3-4x minimum wage. Then the construction companies, corporate farmers, etc figured out they could pay *less* than minimum wage to migrants. This is how it all started. It's not that Americans wouldn't take these jobs...they just couldn't take them for $2/hour

  • @changingworld2
    @changingworld2 Před 6 lety +40

    Adam is complimentary of his friend Jimmy Kimmel and highlights the fact that in his personal life, Jimmy lives quite conservatively. What isn't stressed enough is that many, many mouthpieces for the left actually live these conservative lifestyles but pander to the narrative that their white male privilege, instead of positive life choices, buoyed their lives and careers. This is the epitome of hubris and even quite cruel to the "groundlings" of the left getting marching orders from their leadership and excuses for their failures. It is imperative that friends and celebrities like Adam call attention to this hypocrisy.

    • @coreyshapiro2440
      @coreyshapiro2440 Před 6 lety

      I don't think people should refer to the success of celebrities to prove or disprove the existence of white privilege. Celebrities are the exception to most rules, so it's hard to extrapolate how their lives work to the average person.

    • @changingworld2
      @changingworld2 Před 6 lety +6

      Corey, I think you mistake the thrust of my comment. Sadly, celebrities have become today's thought leaders. This fact was never so clear as when Trump's approval rating among blacks skyrocketed after Kayne West tweeted a picture of himself in a MAGA hat. Adam discussed that well before any whiff of celebrity entered his life, he had ascertained the secret to success - work hard, don't have children you can't pay for, strive to wait to have children until you are married, etc. When hard-working celebrities (and no doubt both Carolla and Kimmel are examples of tenacity in the industry, not some thirteen year old model discovered by a casting agent in a shopping mall)... when they carry water for the left's narrative, they, as today's cultural leaders, help excuse so many people making poor life choices. Worse, when they actually promote/glamorize poor choices with their song lyrics or their art or their commentary, they contribute to the problem. Growing up and living in the poor, rural South for 51 years, I see a wasteland of human potential - and make no mistake, the poor white families around here are just as decimated as the poor black families. Someone on television or radio or the Internet needs to speak up. Why do you think Jordan Peterson has become a world-wide phenomenon? He's on television and the internet and not afraid to say you've made your own mess. It's time for people like Jimmy Kimmel to wake up to this fact, and it's people like his friend Carolla best able to point this out to him.

    • @coreyshapiro2440
      @coreyshapiro2440 Před 6 lety +2

      Working hard, making positive life choices, and not having children you can't afford are not just Conservative values; they are practically universal. No one is claiming that white male privilege is going to magically allow you to be successful. Hard work is still the best way to get ahead but that doesn't mean that coming from a certain background or having a certain skin color will never give you any advantages. There is at least some truth in both the Left's and the Right's narratives. I agree that celebrities shouldn't be looked to as thought leaders as much as they are in our society, but I don't think most celebrities, including Jimmy Kimmel, are encouraging people to make bad life choices. Just complaining that people have shitty values placing blame on those you think are responsible isn't going to make anyone any smarter. Going out of your way to help people who are disadvantaged by directly helping them or trying to make structural changes to society is not the same thing as encouraging laziness.

    • @changingworld2
      @changingworld2 Před 6 lety +4

      I suppose you'll need to show me the evidence that people making good life choices are nevertheless being stymied because of their skin color or backgrounds. I'm not seeing that in my life here among a wide variety of people and income groups, nor are great researchers and economists like Thomas Sowell finding this to be true (read Discrimination and Disparities). Carolla is a prime example of someone with a really negative background taking the "bull by the horns" and changing his family story. Everyone I know is bending over backwards to help people willing to work hard no matter what their skin color, and as someone who volunteered with a highly successful youth theatre for many years, I saw so many opportunities for underprivileged children go untapped. Once, we held a camp in a rec center that had more staff members than campers. We brought in an adult staff of 3 and a teen intern staff of 12 … all for 8 campers. Meanwhile, middle and upper class families paid top dollar for sold out camps with 75 children per camp. I don’t believe that America is full of selfish, heartless people stepping on those less fortunate, and I think it’s up to our cultural leaders to shift the conversation and not allow people to wallow in some esoteric, often comforting vision of being kept down by their skin color or their circumstances “Blame” is a negative term for what I prefer to call a healthy dose of shame. The left refuses to "blame" people for their choices, but at some point, you must say, "It is shameful to have children when you cannot emotionally AND financially care for them." Instead, people like Kimmel blame "the federal government" for not taking care of children, and he particularly points to Conservatives and Libertarians who do not believe that the federal government should raise children. You suggest that these values are universal, but I disagree. I see a nightly barrage of leftists refusing to put shame or blame in even the tiniest fraction of the lives of those making the mistakes. Whether they (like you) can agree to this personally and privately doesn't matter. They refuse to go on record in the public sphere and make what could be live-changing statements to people poised to make what could be super destructive choices.

    Listening to Adam Carolla reminds me of my life in so many ways. W hen you come to that crossroads in your life, when you begin to ask yourself what am I going to do with myself? Am I going to settle for this dead-end job, or reach for something better? You look around and you see people with great jobs, and you ask yourself: "How did they get that?" If you put in the extra effort, you often find yourself in the right place at the right time, like Adam did at KROC.

    Podcast is the future of talk shows and those garbage talk shows with akward audiences cheering and clapping on cue are dying. Let's let people express them selfs and their ideas to the full extent, catchy one liner burns that get an audience cheering have no place in honest intellectual conversation.

    10 mins in and I love this! I'm a white 28 yr old Male. My dad was a public school teacher, my stayed at home and around 8 yrs old my 1 yr old brother got cancer and died 3 years later. We were fucking poor from all this. I started working at 13 yrs old, got strung out on drugs, copped a felony in my early 20s... Now I'm 28 and a small business owner doing landscape and hardscape design. I started with rusty shovels. There were no privileges, I had food stamps before but that's all the help I got. I had to dig myself out of addiction with no fancy rehabs, and I had to teach my self landscape design staying up later reading google and watching contractors on CZcams. I think this year I'll make 65k. Maybe next year I'll make more. But I have to dig, and dig, and dig to get anywhere. And hopefully I'll be building pools for rich people and get to six figures. White privilege is a joke, all the Spanish contractors I know are making a lot more money than me. .

    I can remember listening to Adam on love line in my car, sometimes sitting in my driveway because i had reached my destination and couldn't turn it off. One night a woman called in complaining about her "boyfriend" because he wouldn't stop having butt sex with her even though she asked him not to put it there. Adams advice to her was priceless.

    Awesome interview Ben!! Really enjoyed this one, I've come to look forward to my Sunday afternoons when I get to listen to your specials! Keep up the good work! I truly believe that right now in 2018 we are on the precipice of change in this country. It's right now that's the time to speak up for our beliefs and for what's right, using rational facts and logic. More and more young people are seeing the light and are coming around. We just want the opportunity to be upstanding responsible adults who can stand up for what we believe without being ostracized. (Speaking for myself at the least) Your the man Ben, and Adam was awesome also. I really enjoyed hearing him talk about his life and how he came to acquire his set of morals and ethical values.
