  • Why, and how, should you Ground Balance your Nokta Makro Simplex? Does it really matter? The Simplex Guru takes you through the whys and hows, before demonstrating what happens in each mode, when your GB is out.
    Does it make any difference in FIELD, PARK 1, PARK 2, or ALL METAL? How does it sound on a signal when your ground balance is out? Would you miss signals?
    Join Lori in the beautiful Scottish Highlands where she explains all about GROUND BALANCE, and puts the theory to the test.
    Also- you may notice that the Guru is looking a bit more glam than usual. This is because I have been filming teasers for a brand new metal detecting show, BY detectorists, FOR detectorists. If a detecting tv series interests you(co presented by ME!) please have a look at the end of the video, where I explain the news more fully.
    As a bonus this week, I have included footage at the end of the video, of myself detecting on a beautiful Scottish summer day. I get asked for videos of my technique, and how I use the machine, well- here it is!

    Thank you for you're clips. What you can improve is the way you sway your coil. You get depth loss almost 2 inches. You can bring your coil much more to the ground. Also : at the end of a sway, the distance coil-ground is bigger then at the beginning of a sway. You can't see this when you are detecting but you can see what I mean when you look at yourself in the clip. Of course you know a lot about detecting but so am I after 52 years of doing this beautiful hobby. We are never the perfect master of metal detecting. Even after all those years I am still learning.
    Keep doing this wonderful hobby

    Another great video and explanation. Regarding crushed cans sounding like coins, I have all but eliminated digging cans simply by lifting my coil. If you are still getting that great signal swinging the coil 6 + inches above the ground, it’s best to just pass. Something I learned from some more experienced detectors. The only time I am digging cans now is when I get too eager and forget to check. The Simplex will still occasionally lie to me with a solid 24 or 25 and I’ll dig a pull tab thinking it is a nickel, but I am not sure I can ever eliminate that from happening. Take care!

    Properly adjusting ground balance maximizes the coils field which in turn gives you maximum depth.I learned to ground balance by practicing until i became proficient with doing it.Does it make a difference? Oh most definately. Creat a test area with a mix of buried objects and play with ground balance settings.

    Just moved from an Ace400 to a Simplex and I’m just beginning to learn my machine and it’s definitely a learning curve !! No problem with g/b but vdis are all over the place !! Seems like I’ve been in a couple of trashy places and trying to decide what to dig and what to pass !!

      Ronald Huber if you are hunting a lot of trashy areas, I highly recommend purchasing the SP24 coil. It really makes a huge difference on the Simplex. I find it to be much more stable overall.

    • @thesimplexguru1263
      @thesimplexguru1263  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Ronald, I definitely agree with Spider Hill that the SP 24 elliptical coil would make your work much, much easier! However, not everyone can get a 2nd coil, so we must look at what else we can do to help.
      What kind of trashy have you been dealing with? Can slaw, crisp packets, iron, nails?
      Can slaw is a nightmare, the signal can come in anywhere in the vdi, and its strong. Best to do is try the signal from all sides, hopefully the uneven edge will show itself by breaking up the tone and vdi.
      Crisp packets are similar to can slaw, although they usually register in the 30s for me. They also can sing sweetly and have tricked me more than once. Again, check signal from all sides, hopefully it will break up.
      Nails will have a bright sweet edge, and an iron grunt. Always have your iron audio on, and do not notch iron out! The sweet tone will ALWAYS have an iron tone behind it.
      Big iron usually has a bright edge but also grunt. To tell big iron raise your coil. Does the signal break up, stay strong, or drop out? Is it 2 way repeatable? You will learn the sounds of the iron, the nails.
      If your vdis are unstable, try dialing your sensitivity down/ level 6 or level 5 is fine. Where are you detecting? Do you need to change mode? Do you really need the depth or can you move to a faster mode?
      Use all the modes to check signals, the faster Park 2 will separate signals much better than field.

    The reason the experienced guy turned up the ground balance is some older machines like the AT series could be run hot on the ground in certain conditions if you didn't mind a little chatter to get a bit more depth. It depends on the detector in the end.

    Lori, its easy to identify aluminium cans with the simplex. I'm surprised you have not sussed it out yet.
    I know of two methods, of which I'm sure plenty of other simplex users also know how to identify them.
    If no one volunteers the info get in touch.
    Nice video Lori 👍

      @thesimplexguru1263  Před 4 lety +5

      Thank you Mike. I really don't detect that park too often, the can slaw and 5 inch deep crisp packets are wickedly plentiful- and to be honest I'd rather go avoid horseshoes and ploughshares 😆 .
      However, a couple of folk have volunteered a technique to discriminate a can from a coin, and it is so logical it really was a DOH moment! I can only use the excuse that I just don't do it enough to have worked it out, but I will also say thank you to those of you who have helpfully offered the solution without roasting me for not knowing!
      I will locate another signal in the park that rings in at 69/71. Once I've got that, I'll make a video showing everyone how to do it.
      In a way, I'm glad I didn't know. It gives me an opportunity to learn something new, and then to add that to the channel for others to learn too! Thank you for contributing, I want this channel to be a place where folk come to learn, and I'll be the first to say I have plenty more things to learn along with them! 😃

    Great vid. With the cans , always a good idea to raise coil from ground to still see if it picks signal up. Signal was very loud and too clear with 3 bars of depth so 6 inch. Simplex can pick a pound size object at 9 inch in ground by the manual. You could have probably lifted coil about a foot off ground and still got that signal , therefore wouldn’t been anything worth digging. Keep up the good work 👍🏻

      Great tip! Another detectorist said the same thing, and that is information that needs shared. I need to find another signal like the one in this video, and then I can film it.
      I will need to explain that this technique should tell you if it is a pound coin or not (and that's brilliant for us in the UK) but if you are hunting something larger (say civil war belt buckles) then you will just need to dig them or you will miss good finds. Aquachigger digs loads of Mason jar lids and tin cans because he is looking for big metal objects. He has said as much.
      I'm grateful for your advice, thank you. I really want to be a central source for Simplex users, to pull all the info into one place. When I started, I had to watch videos from dozens of youtubers, just to get a complete tutorial on the Simplex. It took ages. I wanted to create somewhere new users could go and find all they need.

Obviously it's wonderful to be surrounded by mother nature's seasonal foliage; unfortunately the abundant ground cover didn't present any tiny, deep signals to further exhibit the need to accurately ground balance. Ps.
    Nokta says that the beach mode is the mode for manual ground balancing.
    If you search in one of the other modes there is no need for ground balancing, they are automatically groundbalancing.
    If you want to search in very high mineralized ground in one of these modes, it is necessary to groundbalancing manually. You do this in beach mode and when it is done, you switch to the preferred mode. This mode copies the ground balance value from the beach mode and remembers it.

    • @thesimplexguru1263
      @thesimplexguru1263  Před 3 lety +3

      baldybob1 Ahh, that’s a tough one Bob. If you are a beginner, definitely dig some ( or lots or all) so you are assured in your own mind that you are truly hearing big iron. Always check your hole as well, that will tell you if it was 2 signals or just one. Try the Knipshield technique too, that will show iron for what it is. And lift your coil up above signal, if big iron- it will ring up long after a wee item will drop off. And trace out size using pinpoint mode, that can help. Lots to things to try to test, but it still may not show up a small quality item next to a large iron one.
      Regarding your original question- it depends on what coil you have, and what version of software you have, and what sensitivity you have on. If you have a small coil, then you will be able to separate signals near to each other better than a large coil. If you have a small coil and get a bright signal and an iron grunt, then it is worth really seeing if you can separate them. If you get a solid, multi way repeatable signal, separate from the grunt, it could be another signal and worth a dig. If you have stock 11” coil, it may be difficult to separate a small signal from iron near it, although park 2 and park 1 mode (switch over and test signal) can sometimes do it. Nails are a real bear on this one, as they are bright, and iron, and can cause separate signals.
      Software version 2.77 will be more tetchy than 2.78 and 2.68, especially if sensitivity up high and particularly in field mode. I find that hitting a reed or dock plant, or especially thistles, causes it to false/ grunt when I’m running her hot (everything on max). Swinging too fast can cause a grunt at end of swing too. And my most recent experience with a false grunt involves the field I have full of coal. All the signals there have iron grunts, in field on full or sens 6. Turning to park 1 or 2, and dropping sens 1 bar cuts it out, and signal comes in clearer.
      It is not an easy question, and time will help pick the no dig iron signals apart from dig signals. I can say that you will feel more confident in the choice of what to ignore as you spend more time with Simplex.I agonised over big iron identification when I first started, it is 2nd nature now. However it is good to dig lots at first (and every so often as you go on especially in new fields), to keep checking your ear is tuned in. I’d also add that gold can come in as low as 4, I have seen recently in a forum someone recommend digging all 04’s, as they found a gold necklace that way. I think in agricultural fields you will dig a lifetime of iron before you get a gold necklace, it it is always possible, and only you can decide your tolerance for digging horse shoes!
      Hope this helps- looking at how much I have written- I think a video is probably in order, just to get the concepts out there. Thanks for your question, and please ask for clarification if I’ve been unclear. Cheers and HH

      @@thesimplexguru1263 Lori, thanks very much for you comprehensive reply. I have a stock coil running on 2.78 and been detecting for one month, five outings. One of many things I have noticed that have had me befuddled is that ( I know it's only a guide) the depth gauge on a good target is at max sometimes and I end up digging to Australia when it is actually in the side of the hole? Strange. Sometimes in the Same circumstances I get fed up digging only to find the target 3 or 4 inches outside the circumference of the hole ( pinpoint technique training required). Definitely the method you mentioned above sounds excellent and I will try it. Yes big iron is a bit of a bugger and depending on depth can morph into silver or something else attractive in my headphones! I love your vids and have learned shed loads from you . Keep it up . It's a matter of knowing the basics, then just having a go, and learning along the way.

    Thanks... I'm following your GB tips, especially on the beach! One question, please... how much difference is there in coil performance? I mean, we first time buyers only have the standard coils for starters... and want to learn as much as possible with them before the next step of getting the fancy coils! Thanks again,

      Vossie at Treasure Life!
      Hi Vossie, The performance differences are only two things for me. 1. The balance of the machine is physically better for me. The stock coil overbalances the machine ( for me) and I find long sessions kill my elbow. The wee coil doesn’t do this, even though the weights are very similar. 2. The small coil is SUPERB for picking apart signals next to each other. In trashy sites it excels in picking out the the signals you want from the stuff you don’t. ALSO, 2.7x is more stable in SOME situations ( the vdi is more sure of itself, and isn’t as jumpy in lvl 7 sensitivity).
      BUT- it does not cover as much ground, it does not go any deeper, or react hugely faster than the large coil ( in my opinion). If you mostly detect beaches, you want to cover as much ground as possible. You are also not likely to need to pick out tiny signals from lots of trash or need the depth of level 7. If you are ok with the balance of the machine, and detecting beaches, then you are probably best using the stock coil. Take your time and learn it, and when you do add the extra coil, you will have a good idea of where you want to use it. Let me know how you get on with the simplex, and what sort of things you find! Thanks for your comment. :)

    I like the video but was that coil stock or the sp24? And would that make a difference?

    • @thesimplexguru1263
      @thesimplexguru1263  Před 3 lety

      Hi Shawn, thanks for watching and commenting. The coil wouldn't matter, it's all about the interaction between the machine and the earth, and allowing whichever coil you are using to perform as well as it can. :)

    • @thesimplexguru1263
      @thesimplexguru1263  Před 3 lety

      And I was using the SP24 in this video, but the stock coil would react the same. :)

    Thanks for this video My friend, the only Thing that i was confused by before this video was how many times you would let it beep when ground balancing but if i understand it right 3 beeps and readdy?
    Also the tv show sounds cool i Wonder if i can see it here in dk

    • @thesimplexguru1263
      @thesimplexguru1263  Před 4 lety +1

      Do it to beep 3 times, watch the numbers. Should all be roughly the same. You may notice they change in cycle, if you run through more than 3. I watch the numbers and cycle through them, choosing the roughly middle one. Say I get 52, 55, 58, for example. I'll pump it til I get round to roughly 55 again, and choose that.

    I turned mine on a field and it was in the 90's but my mate said ground balance it so I did and it dropped to the 30's and the machine was chattering all over the place so I turned it off and on again so the GB reset and the machine was fine after that

    Today frist time out with the Simplex with the SP24 coil, i tried th ground balance but I dont , get het the beep ,i was on park 2 mode versie 2.78 , tips ?

    • @thesimplexguru1263
      @thesimplexguru1263  Před 4 lety

      Hmmm, ideas- 1. were you on a clean piece of ground? If there is a signal under coil it won't balance/beep. 2. Were you on a beach, and if so- were you in beach mode? It won't balance in the other modes on a beach (in my experience). 3. Is the soil showing as mineralised on the wee metre on the vdi? If jts mineralised it can interfere with balance. 4. Try again on another location. I once had the Simplex (with sp24) REFUSE to beep or balance. Not on a beach, no mineral or signal interference, just would not. Left it, and tried again 10 minutes later (about 50 feet away). It then did it.
      No idea why it hung up, but moving to a new patch resolved it.
      Let me know if you get it to work!

    Golden mask 1 or simpleks+ ?

  • @treasurehuntingnewyork5979

    Hi I’m just curious have you ever tried the simplex with a good set of corded headphones maybe you have in a prior video I’m sorry if so but I notice you get a dual setting high and lo with 4 setting each what a world of difference in the sound when you can turn it up just a little more then what the wireless allow a true “boost audio” mode I shall call it and that’s just with my old first Texas stereo headphones

    • @thesimplexguru1263
      @thesimplexguru1263  Před 4 lety

      Hi New York, I've not had a set of corded on it, I bought the wireless pack and it doesn't have the headphone adaptor in it (to use cordless). A close detecting friend did get wired headphones and he wasn't impressed. Now how a set of good quality low latency detecting phones would work with the adaptor, that's a good question. I'll ask about! :)

    • @treasurehuntingnewyork5979
      @treasurehuntingnewyork5979 Před 4 lety +1

      The Simplex Guru I can’t think of a reason they wouldn’t be impressed I was absolutely blown away oh my word the nuances that come through for whatever reason I’m sure for safety’s sake so ppl don’t hurt there ears you can only turn the wireless up so far and I’m sure for most that’s ok but I’m a firm believer now there was something missing for me with the simplex before and I think it was made to be used in unison with good headphone you can turn up more
