I converted my drive chain to a 530 Xring chain over two years ago now and its been one of the best upgrades I have done.
From what I have seen to date with it, I doubt I will even have to tighten the chain in 10k miles, as at 5k its the same adjustment wise as when I first put it on and there is no chain stretch detectable.
The Xring chain is much stronger than the standard chain and fits straight onto the standard sprockets front and back of your Bonnie, so no need for special sprockets to be made for you each time you need a sprocket change.
It is however much wider than the std Reynolds chain and consequently needs a small amount of material grinding off the castings on the gearbox to allow sufficient clearance for it to run correctly.
You do need a chain splitter with these chains and there are plenty of videos on UTUBE to show you how to use one to fit the chain.
Straighten your chain case dead straight and run 100x90x18 tires.
This leaves a full 5mm gap between the chain case and the tire. It may be possible to run a 110x 90 x 18 but ive never tried that.
The 100 x 90 x 18 works perfectly and in fact the orientation between front to back is much better, as you are not moving the centers as you lean the bike over on corners. I often have the bike over on the pegs and she's confident and stable on bends and under hard braking .I run Avon Roadrunners.
    Hope this helps.

The kind of thing you need when you don't want to maintain adjustments, I believe. Not that I knew that terribly well but I learned now.

These old bikes live on TLC and I get more enjoyment working on them than riding them, but having to scrap endless chains for over stretch in such a short time is just a pain. So I did something about it. Whish I had been more active modifying the bikes to be more reliable with longer range when I was younger lol.

Thx for making this video plus your other ones too. I'm restoring my 78 T140v and will need to assemble the engine so before I do that I'm going to carry out your X ring mod. Thx again M8

Remember you are only grinding off a few mm for the extra width of the chain and to mark out the chain run on the casting before grinding. Its very quick and easy to do. Once done put the chain on the sprocket and check you have the 4mm of clearance all round the chain run. That bit takes longer to do than the grinding but its important to to do.

Just a note that you need to use 100x 90 x 18 tires. 110x90x18 may be possible but never tried those. The 100x90x18 leaves a full 5mm gap from chain guard to tire side wall. The is no loss of performance using these tires. I use Avon Roadrunners.

Thx, I've just installed 110 80 x 18, when I laced the wheel I used the max offset so hopefully that will help, there appears from looking at the wheel in the frame to be just enough clearance for the xring chain. I'll have to wait until I bolt my engine in to be sure. I have assembled some some of the bike I'll post a picture on FB shortly. I use Avon's too.

The older model DID 530 VX with a pin length of 23.3mm is more likely to fit without modification if you can track one down.

Possibly but as there no longer available generally its a bit pointless for me to make a UTUBE advice or upgrade video about that one. Using the larger chain as I have is no hassle, and the modification work is very easy to do and takes no more than 15 minutes to do if you have the engine out. Hope this helps.

Good video - just wondering how you deal with the chain rubbing on the tyre? With the standard chain it’s only a few mm off my tyre as it is, with this mod it would definitely be making contact.

It may be possible to run a 110x 90 x 18 but ive never tried that. The 100 x 90 x 18 works perfectly and has been used by many Bonnie owners for many years because they work really well on the bike, in fact the orientation between front to back is much better, as you are not moving the centers as you lean the bike over on corners.

I have added this to the description on the video and apologies for missing this bit out of the video. Well spotted and hope this helps.😄
