  • Growers use the Tilmor Basket Weeder to eliminate weeds throughout the season saving labor, time and money. The wire baskets are most commonly spaced apart for inter-row weeding, allowing the crop to pass between. Basket weeders may also be used to prepare a stale seedbed by placing the baskets together and running over the entire width of a seedbed.
Basket weeders have been around for over sixty years and are trusted by many growers to effectively control inter-row weeds. Tilmor makes basket weeders available to fit many older tractors such as (but not limited to) the Kubota L245, Farmall 140, and Allis-Chalmers G. They are also able to fit modern tractors with a 3-pt hitch as well as the Tilmor 520 Tractor.
Small growers face unique challenges and often must rely on older equipment that was developed many years ago for mechanized cultivation. This often means farmers are forced to rely on parts that are obsolete, poorly constructed or difficult to find.
Our goal is to produce a variety of implements for planting, cultivation, harvest, post-harvest, and more.
These implements will be built to last and fully supported by Tilmor, making it easy to find and purchase the equipment you need to maintain your farm.

Little by little Don! Give us a call sometime so we know how we may help. It may not be with a new unit, but maybe at some point there will be some demo/used/blemished products that could be an opportunity for you in the future!

Does the same thing a "Gee Whiz" cultivator did. One horsepower! Old Maude was a good horse for working in the garden. :-)

If you can only have one tool, then the spring tooth (Gee Whiz) is definitely the way to go!
If you get into more precision work and perform it on a larger scale then the basket weeder can be a great addition (not substitution) to a spring tooth cultivator.

What's it like In less than perfect ( damp ),or weedy conditions ? .. looks like a very handy tool

      Great question!
It definitely depends because everyone's definition of damp and weedy can be different, but I'll touch on a few things below.
The problem with damp ground - More of the roots want to stay attached to the soil even if it is flipped out of the ground. So weed termination will be less effective.
The shots with the Allis G were right at the edge. It was shot in the morning so the top layer was a bit damp from some heavy dew, but if we could have waited another 1-2hrs it would have been perfect. It still did well, but some of the white thread weeds were still sticking to the soil.
Honeybee Hills Farm recently shared a video where you can see the front baskets filled up with soil - instagram.com/p/CI6jbnVHaDU/
The front baskets break the soil and drive the rear baskets so they are okay to get filled up or beat up by stones. The rear ones do the work of spinning a bit faster and flicking the weeds out, so they are still doing the job in their video but they would be more effective if it wasn't as wet. Some soil is also just stickier.
Weedy Conditions - The basket weeder works optimally when weeds are at the white thread stage. It doesn't matter how many there are but it is critical what stage the weed is at. Similar to the Finger weeders, cotyledon to 2-leaf can work as well but when you are getting further along than that, then you will struggle to remove the weed and will need something that is going to cut it out.
Obviously we can't control the weather and you have to cultivate when you can, but general rule for good cultivation is to cultivate before you can see any weeds. If you scratch your fingers on the surface and see some weeds germinating looking like fine white threads, this is the perfect time to use something like the basket weeder!

I can see it now, hit just one small bump and there goes your crop.
